Abstract:The mixed ion and electron conducting oxides of SrCo1-yTayO3-δ (0≤y≤0.3) powders were prepared by solid state reaction. By doping 10mol% of tantalum on the B-site of SrCoO3, the cubic perovskite structure of the SrCoO3 is stable and a high oxygen permeation flux is achieved. The phase structure of the perovskite-type oxide of SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) revealing that SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ exhibits a good phase structure stability and reversibility in air. The oxygen permeation is predominated by oxygen ion bulk diffusion at the temperature≥900°C. During the long-term operation, the SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ membrane is operated at 900°C for more than 520h with a steady oxygen permeation flux of around 1.36×10-6mol/scm2 with a membrane thickness of 0.65mm under He/air gradient. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.
A novel zincum-doped perovskite-type ceramic membrane for oxygen separation

Abstract:Zincum-doped ceramic membrane materials based on BaCo0.4Fe0.4ZnxZr(0.2−x)O3−δ with 0≤x≤0.2 were synthesized by combining citric acid and ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) complexing method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zn0.2O3−δ ceramic oxide exhibits a pure cubic perovskite structure. Oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) profile indicates that BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zn0.2O3−δ possesses a good phase reversibility. An oxygen permeation flux of 0.65ml/mincm2 was obtained at 950°C and a single activation energy of 67kJ/mol was observed for the oxygen permeation in the temperature range of 600–950°C. No decline was found during more than 100h oxygen permeation.

Abstract:Novel cobalt-free perovskite-type oxides of Ba1-xSrxFeO3-δ (x = 0–0.4) and Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe1-yTiyO3-δ (y = 0–0.12) were successfully prepared by traditional solid-state method and systematically characterized as oxygen permeation membranes. When doping strontium ranges from ×  = 0.2 to 0.4, cubic perovskite-type structure can be stabilized down to ambient temperature for Ba1-xSrxFeO3-δ. The oxygen permeation flux decreases but the structural stability increases slightly with increasing Sr doping level. The Ba0.8Sr0.2FeO3-δ membrane shows the highest oxygen permeation flux of 1.25 mL cm−2 min−1 at 900 °C under air/He gradient oxygen partial pressure condition for a 1 mm thick membrane. The Ti substitution for partial Fe enhances significantly the chemical and structural stability of Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe1-yTiyO3-δ against H2 and CO2 containing atmospheres but at a slight expense of oxygen permeability. The Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe0.92Ti0.08O3-δ membrane, with excellent structural stability and high oxygen permeation flux of 0.93 mL cm−2 min−1 at 900 °C, shows great potential in oxygen separation and related membrane reactor applications.

Abstract:A novel Cobalt-free perovskite dense oxygen permeable membrane with the composition Pr0.6Sr0.4Cu0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (PSCF) is designed and evaluated in this work. The XRD results reveal that the perovskite-type PSCF materials exhibit typical orthorhombic structure without any impurity phases. And PSCF powder exhibits excellent chemical stability in CO2 during high temperature annealing confirmed by HRTEM and thermogravimetric(TG) analysis. Upon the 20% Cu doping, the electrical conductivity of PSCF increases from 231.5 S cm−1 Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ (PSF) to 280.1 S cm−1 at around 773 K. Furthermore, the oxygen permeation flux through the dense PSCF membrane is evaluated and achieved 0.40 mL min−1 cm−2 swept by He at 1173 K for a 1.4-mm-thick membrane which is much higher than that of PSF membrane (0.17 mL min−1 cm−2). Meanwhile, the oxygen permeation of the PSCF membrane maintains a value of 0.16 mL min−1 cm−2 for more than 100 h at 1073 K with CO2 as sweep gas. The present results indicate that PSCF oxygen-permeable membrane is a promising chemically device for oxygen production with sufficiently high oxygen permeation flux.

Abstract:Dense perovskite materials exhibiting mixed ionic and electronic conductivity can be used as a membrane material for the production of oxygen of very high purity and in partial oxidation of methane to syngas in membrane reactors. They represent an attractive technology which is energy- and cost-efficient in comparison with conventional technologies in those fields. Currently, one of the most promising membrane materials is BaCo0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ perovskite which possesses very high oxygen permeation flux. However, its stability is not satisfactorily high. In this work, Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ perovskite was prepared by introducing A-site deficiency into BaCo0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ and expected to enhance the stability and as well as the oxygen permeability. Under an air/helium oxygen gradient, the oxygen permeation flux of 1 mm thick Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ membrane was 1.8 ml min−1 cm−2 at 875 °C, which is slightly higher than that of BaCo0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ membrane under the similar condition. A 400 h durability test of Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ membrane for POM reaction at 875 °C showed no degradation in the measured oxygen permeation flux and methane conversion, which indicated that Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ had a significantly better stability than BaCo0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ and could be a promising material for oxygen generator.

Abstract:In this study, perovskite-type La 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 0.3 Fe 0.6 M 0.1 O 3− δ (M = Cu, Zn) powders were synthesized using a scalable reverse co-precipitation method, presenting them as novel materials for oxygen transport membranes. The comprehensive study covered various aspects including oxygen permeability, crystal structure, conductivity, morphology, CO 2 tolerance, and long-term regenerative durability with a focus on phase structure and composition. The membrane La 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 0.3 Fe 0.6 Zn 0.1 O 3 − δ exhibited high oxygen permeation fluxes, reaching up to 0.88 and 0.64 mL·min −1 cm −2 under air/He and air/CO 2 gradients at 1173 K, respectively. After 1600 h of CO 2 exposure, the perovskite structure remained intact, showcasing superior CO 2 resistance. A combination of first principles simulations and experimental measurements was employed to deepen the understanding of Cu/Zn substitution effects on the structure, oxygen vacancy formation, and transport behavior of the membranes. These findings underscore the potential of this highly CO 2 -tolerant membrane for applications in high-temperature oxygen separation. The enhanced insights into the oxygen transport mechanism contribute to the advancement of next-generation membrane materials.

Abstract:Pure oxygen is an important raw material with many important applications. The production of oxygen via a conducting ceramic membrane is a new, cost-effective and advanced technology with the advantage of continuous oxygen production. The perovskite-type mixed-conducting oxide Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF) exhibits superb oxygen permeability, yet it suffers from poor phase stability. In this study, we aim to improve the operational stability of the BSCF membrane by introducing a high-valence W6+ ion as a B-site dopant. Its effect on the phase composition, structure, structural stability, electrical conductivity, oxygen transfer rate and oxygen permeability as a membrane is systematically investigated. Upon the partial substitution of cobalt and iron in the W6+-doped BSCF, single/double perovskite composites are formed instead of single perovskite composites. Remarkably, the formation of the single/double perovskite composites enhances the oxygen permeation stability without obviously compromising the oxygen permeability. Among the various materials, the composite with the nominal composition of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.1W0.1O3-δ shows the best performance in terms of stability and oxygen permeability. These findings thus introduce a new way to design conducting ceramic membranes for oxygen separation at high temperatures.

Abstract:A series of composites based on (100-x)wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-xwt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ (x = 25, 40 and 50) doped with the cheap and abundant alkaline earth metal Ca2+ at the A-site has been successfully designed and fabricated. The crystal structure, oxygen permeability, phase and CO2 stability were evaluated. The composition of 60wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40wt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ(60CPO-40PCFO) possesses the highest oxygen permeability among three studied composites. At 1000 °C, the oxygen permeation fluxes through the 0.3 mm-thickness 60CPO-40PCFO membranes after porous La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ each to 1.00 mL cm−2 min−1 and 0.62 mL cm−2 min−1 under air/He and air/CO2 gradients, respectively. In situ XRD results demonstrated that the 60CPO-40PCFO sample displayed a perfect structural stability in air as well as CO2-containing atmosphere. Thus, low-cost, Co-free and Sr-free 60CPO-40PCFO has high CO2 stability and is economical and environmental friendly since the expensive and volatile element Co was replaced by Fe and Sr was waived since it easily forms carbonates.

Abstract:Oxygen transport membranes (OTMs) can be operated as efficient oxygen separators and oxygen distributors, but their diffusion is hampered by the lack of appropriate materials with sufficient chemical stability in operating conditions. Mixed ionic‐electronic conducting SrTiO3‐based perovskite are a promising option due to their remarkable resistance in reducing environments, but they are prone to degradation in CO2‐containing atmospheres owing to carbonate formation. In this study, we propose new Ca1‐xSrxTi0.8Fe0.2O3‐δ perovskites where the Sr2+ cation is partially substituted by Ca2+ to improve the tolerance to CO2. We show that, upon increasing Ca molar fraction, the phase stability in CO2 is progressively improved thanks to the mitigation of carbonate growth. The manufacturing process of the membranes benefits from Ca introduction, which promotes powder densification during sintering. A membrane made of Ca0.1Sr0.9Ti0.8Fe0.2O3‐δ exhibited a stable oxygen flux for 340 h at 900°C when swept with He and for 170 h at 900°C when swept with a gaseous stream containing 40% CO2. Post‐test characterizations confirmed the retention of the crystal structure after the long‐term permeation tests. Ca‐substituted SrTi1‐yFeyO3‐δ perovskites can be considered promising materials for OTMs working in harsh environments and in the presence of CO2.

Abstract:We report a novel CO2-stable reduction-tolerant dual-phase oxygen transport membrane 40 wt% Nd0.6Sr0.4FeO3−δ–60 wt% Ce0.9Nd0.1O2−δ. This membrane material shows good reversibility of the oxygen permeation fluxes, good stability in a CO2 atmosphere and under the harsh conditions of partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas up to 950 °C.

Abstract:A novel cobalt-free and noble metal-free dual-phase oxygen-transporting membrane with a composition of 40 wt % Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3-delta-60 wt % Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-delta (40PSFO-60CPO) has been successfully developed via an in situ one-pot one-step glycine-nitrate combustion process. In situ XRD demonstrated that the 40PSFO-60CPO dual-phase membrane shows a good phase stability not only in air but also in SO vol % CO2/50 vol % N-2 atmosphere. When using pure He or pure CO2 as sweep gases, at 950 degrees C steady oxygen permeation fluxes of 0.26 cm(3) min(-1) cm(-2) and 0.18 cm(3) min(-1) cm(-2) are obtained through the 40PSFO-60CPO dual-phase membrane. The partial oxidation of methane (POM) to syngas was also successfully investigated in the 40PSFO-60CPO dual-phase membrane reactor. Methane conversion was found to be higher than 99.0% with 97.0% CO selectivity and 4.4 cm(3) min(-1) cm(-2) oxygen permeation flux in steady state at 950 degrees C. Our dual-phase membrane - without any noble metals such as Ag, Pd or easily reducible metals oxides of Co or Ni - exhibits high oxygen permeation fluxes as well as good phase stability at high temperatures. Furthermore, the dual-phase membrane shows a good chemical stability under the harsh conditions of the POM reaction and in a CO2 atmosphere at high temperatures.

Abstract:A CO2-tolerant dual phase membrane with composition of 60wt% Ce0.9Gd0.1O2−δ–40wt% Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (60CGO–40BSCF) was successfully developed. The 60CGO–40BSCF dual phase membrane showed good reversibility of the oxygen permeation fluxes and good stability in CO2 atmosphere. A stable oxygen permeation flux of 0.67mL/mincm2 was obtained with pure CO2 as the sweep gas during a 250h oxygen permeation at 950°C. The electronic conductivity results confirmed the concept that the electronic conductivity of the BSCF perovskite oxide could be partly reserved in CO2 atmosphere. Due to the high oxygen permeation fluxes and the good stability in CO2-containing atmosphere, the 60CGO–40BSCF dual phase membrane has great potential application in oxyfuel techniques for CO2 capture and storage.

Abstract:Cobalt-free oxides GdxBa1−xFeO3−δ (0.01≤x≤0.1) were achieved by a solid state reaction method. It is found that GdxBa1−xFeO3−δ (0.025≤x≤0.1) exhibits the cubic perovskite structure. Among GdxBa1−xFeO3−δ (0.025≤x≤0.1), the Gd0.025Ba0.975FeO3−δ (GBF2.5) membrane shows the outstanding phase structure stability and the highest oxygen permeation, which can reach 1.44ml·cm−2·min−1 at 950°C under air/He oxygen partial pressure gradient. The GBF2.5 membrane was successfully operated for more than 100h at 800°C and the oxygen permeation flux through the membrane is 0.62ml·cm−2·min−1. After 100h oxygen permeation experiment at 800°C, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDXS) demonstrate that the GBF2.5 exhibits phase structure stability even at intermediate temperature.

Abstract:A novel CO2-stable and reduction-tolerant Ce0.8Sm0.2O(2-δ)-La0.9Sr0.1FeO(3-δ) (SDC-LSF) dense dual-phase oxygen-permeable membrane was designed and evaluated in this work. Homogeneous SDC-LSF composite powders for membrane fabrication were synthesized via a one-pot combustion method. The chemical compatibility and ion interdiffusion behavior between the fluorite phase SDC and perovskite phase LSF during the synthesis process was studied. The oxygen permeation flux through the dense dual-phase composite membranes was evaluated and found to be highly dependent on the volume ratio of SDC and LSF. The SDC-LSF membrane with a volume ratio of 7:3 (SDC70-LSF30) possessed the highest permeation flux, achieving 6.42 × 10(-7) mol·cm(-2)·s(-1) under an air/CO gradient at 900 °C for a 1.1-mm-thick membrane. Especially, the membrane performance showed excellent durability and operated stably without any degradation at 900 °C for 450 h with helium, CO2, or CO as the sweep gas. The present results demonstrate that a SDC70-LSF30 dual-phase membrane is a promising chemically stable device for oxygen production and CO2 capture with sufficiently high oxygen permeation flux.

Abstract:A series of novel cobalt-free dense oxygen-permeable membranes of the type with Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe1-xNbxO3-δ (PSFNx, x = 0–0.1) were synthesized. Subsequently, the effects of Nb-doping on the microstructure, oxygen permeability, and stability of PSFNx were studied under a pure He or CO2 atmosphere. The structure of the material did not change in either atmospheres and its stability of the material was enhanced as the level of Nb-doping increased. For the sample with x = 0 and 0.075, carbonates and sulfates were present on the sweep side of the PSF membrane, but no impurities were detected on the sweep side of the PSFN0.075. In addition, the oxygen-permeation performance exhibited almost no attenuation when the Nb-doping content were 0.075. As revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the CO2 resistance of the material was enhanced by reducing the basicity of PSFNx, which was induced by the substitution of Fe with Nb.
Behavior Of Ba(Co, Fe, Nb)O3-Delta Perovskite In Co2-Containing Atmospheres: Degradation Mechanism And Materials Design

Abstract:This study investigates the degradation behavior and mechanism of perovskite-type BaCo0.4Fe0.4Nb0.2O3-delta membranes in CO2-containing atmospheres at 800-1000 degrees C and examines the influence of cation substitution on the CO2 resistance. The oxygen permeation flux deteriorates rapidly upon switching the sweep gas from Ar to CO2. During exposure to CO2, the membrane material decomposes to form a compact BaCO3 surface layer and a subjacent porous decomposed zone which consists of CoO and a Co-depleted Ba(Co, Fe, Nb)O3-delta perovskite phase. Within this zone, the composition of the perovskite product varies with depth, with more pronounced cobalt depletion found closer to the carbonate layer. The growth of the product layers is found to be diffusion-controlled and can be enhanced by the presence of oxygen. Outward diffusion of barium from the unreacted perovskite bulk appears to rate limit the growth. A drop of the barium chemical potential is concurrent with a larger degree of cobalt depletion in the Ba(Co, Fe, Nb)O3-delta phase. This suggests that Co substitution by Fe, or particularly by Nb, results in better CO2 resistance. The effectiveness of the Fe/Nb substitution was experimentally proved and may be ascribed to increase in both the oxygen stoichiometry and acidity of the perovskite. A strategy for development of CO2-resistant materials is then proposed.
