Abstract:Zincum-doped ceramic membrane materials based on BaCo0.4Fe0.4ZnxZr(0.2−x)O3−δ with 0≤x≤0.2 were synthesized by combining citric acid and ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) complexing method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zn0.2O3−δ ceramic oxide exhibits a pure cubic perovskite structure. Oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) profile indicates that BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zn0.2O3−δ possesses a good phase reversibility. An oxygen permeation flux of 0.65ml/mincm2 was obtained at 950°C and a single activation energy of 67kJ/mol was observed for the oxygen permeation in the temperature range of 600–950°C. No decline was found during more than 100h oxygen permeation.

Abstract:The mixed ion and electron conducting oxides of SrCo1-yTayO3-δ (0≤y≤0.3) powders were prepared by solid state reaction. By doping 10mol% of tantalum on the B-site of SrCoO3, the cubic perovskite structure of the SrCoO3 is stable and a high oxygen permeation flux is achieved. The phase structure of the perovskite-type oxide of SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) revealing that SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ exhibits a good phase structure stability and reversibility in air. The oxygen permeation is predominated by oxygen ion bulk diffusion at the temperature≥900°C. During the long-term operation, the SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ membrane is operated at 900°C for more than 520h with a steady oxygen permeation flux of around 1.36×10-6mol/scm2 with a membrane thickness of 0.65mm under He/air gradient. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Currently, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in the industrial application of renewable electrochemical technologies. Thus, developing electrocatalysts with high performance and sufficient stability for the OER is urgently pursued. Although perovskite oxides have provided numerous degrees of freedom for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity due to their diversity and flexibility, their investigation for the OER is mostly limited to pseudocubic structures. In this study, a complex perovskite oxide, Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.1Ir0.1O3-delta (BSCFI-91), with a six-layer hexagonal (6H) structure, is synthesized first, displaying higher OER activity. Based on parent Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF-91), BSCFI-91 is obtained by replacing iron (Fe) with low-level iridium (Ir) doping and produces a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low overpotential of 300 mV, a small Tafel slope of 61.2 mV dec(-1), and good stability up to 10 h in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The dramatically enhanced OER performance is achieved by optimizing cobalt (Co) valence and highly oxidative oxygen species based on the hexagonal structure. The Ir incorporation facilitated the oxygen (O) p band center approaching to the Fermi level, indicating that BSCFI-91 could be a candidate in the electrocatalyst application. Moreover, this study opens up a new way to design efficient perovskite oxides for OER catalysis in terms of hexagonal crystal structures and composition modulation strategy.

Abstract:A novel Cobalt-free perovskite dense oxygen permeable membrane with the composition Pr0.6Sr0.4Cu0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (PSCF) is designed and evaluated in this work. The XRD results reveal that the perovskite-type PSCF materials exhibit typical orthorhombic structure without any impurity phases. And PSCF powder exhibits excellent chemical stability in CO2 during high temperature annealing confirmed by HRTEM and thermogravimetric(TG) analysis. Upon the 20% Cu doping, the electrical conductivity of PSCF increases from 231.5 S cm−1 Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ (PSF) to 280.1 S cm−1 at around 773 K. Furthermore, the oxygen permeation flux through the dense PSCF membrane is evaluated and achieved 0.40 mL min−1 cm−2 swept by He at 1173 K for a 1.4-mm-thick membrane which is much higher than that of PSF membrane (0.17 mL min−1 cm−2). Meanwhile, the oxygen permeation of the PSCF membrane maintains a value of 0.16 mL min−1 cm−2 for more than 100 h at 1073 K with CO2 as sweep gas. The present results indicate that PSCF oxygen-permeable membrane is a promising chemically device for oxygen production with sufficiently high oxygen permeation flux.

Abstract:Novel cobalt-free perovskite-type oxides of Ba1-xSrxFeO3-δ (x = 0–0.4) and Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe1-yTiyO3-δ (y = 0–0.12) were successfully prepared by traditional solid-state method and systematically characterized as oxygen permeation membranes. When doping strontium ranges from ×  = 0.2 to 0.4, cubic perovskite-type structure can be stabilized down to ambient temperature for Ba1-xSrxFeO3-δ. The oxygen permeation flux decreases but the structural stability increases slightly with increasing Sr doping level. The Ba0.8Sr0.2FeO3-δ membrane shows the highest oxygen permeation flux of 1.25 mL cm−2 min−1 at 900 °C under air/He gradient oxygen partial pressure condition for a 1 mm thick membrane. The Ti substitution for partial Fe enhances significantly the chemical and structural stability of Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe1-yTiyO3-δ against H2 and CO2 containing atmospheres but at a slight expense of oxygen permeability. The Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe0.92Ti0.08O3-δ membrane, with excellent structural stability and high oxygen permeation flux of 0.93 mL cm−2 min−1 at 900 °C, shows great potential in oxygen separation and related membrane reactor applications.

Abstract:Cobalt-free perovskite-type oxides BaFe1−yTayO3−δ (0≤y≤0.2) were synthesized via a simple solid state reaction. The cubic perovskite structure can be obtained when y is over 0.1. BaFe0.9Ta0.1O3−δ (BFT0.1) membrane shows the highest oxygen permeation flux, which can reach 1.6ml·min−1·cm−2 at 950°C under the gradient of air/He. The O2-TPD results reveal that BaFe0.9Ta0.1O3−δ material shows an excellent reversibility and phase structure stability in air. The oxygen permeation flux is limited by the bulk diffusion when the membrane thickness is over 0.8mm, and it is limited by both the bulk diffusion and the surface exchange when the membrane thickness is below 0.5mm. Stable oxygen permeation fluxes are obtained during 180h operation.

Abstract:In this study, perovskite-type La 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 0.3 Fe 0.6 M 0.1 O 3− δ (M = Cu, Zn) powders were synthesized using a scalable reverse co-precipitation method, presenting them as novel materials for oxygen transport membranes. The comprehensive study covered various aspects including oxygen permeability, crystal structure, conductivity, morphology, CO 2 tolerance, and long-term regenerative durability with a focus on phase structure and composition. The membrane La 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 0.3 Fe 0.6 Zn 0.1 O 3 − δ exhibited high oxygen permeation fluxes, reaching up to 0.88 and 0.64 mL·min −1 cm −2 under air/He and air/CO 2 gradients at 1173 K, respectively. After 1600 h of CO 2 exposure, the perovskite structure remained intact, showcasing superior CO 2 resistance. A combination of first principles simulations and experimental measurements was employed to deepen the understanding of Cu/Zn substitution effects on the structure, oxygen vacancy formation, and transport behavior of the membranes. These findings underscore the potential of this highly CO 2 -tolerant membrane for applications in high-temperature oxygen separation. The enhanced insights into the oxygen transport mechanism contribute to the advancement of next-generation membrane materials.

Abstract:Pure oxygen is an important raw material with many important applications. The production of oxygen via a conducting ceramic membrane is a new, cost-effective and advanced technology with the advantage of continuous oxygen production. The perovskite-type mixed-conducting oxide Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF) exhibits superb oxygen permeability, yet it suffers from poor phase stability. In this study, we aim to improve the operational stability of the BSCF membrane by introducing a high-valence W6+ ion as a B-site dopant. Its effect on the phase composition, structure, structural stability, electrical conductivity, oxygen transfer rate and oxygen permeability as a membrane is systematically investigated. Upon the partial substitution of cobalt and iron in the W6+-doped BSCF, single/double perovskite composites are formed instead of single perovskite composites. Remarkably, the formation of the single/double perovskite composites enhances the oxygen permeation stability without obviously compromising the oxygen permeability. Among the various materials, the composite with the nominal composition of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.1W0.1O3-δ shows the best performance in terms of stability and oxygen permeability. These findings thus introduce a new way to design conducting ceramic membranes for oxygen separation at high temperatures.

Abstract:A novel cobalt-free perovskite based on Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe0.8Zn0.2O3−δ (BSFZ) were prepared by EDTA-citric acid method. The lattice constants of the BSFZ perovskite were characterized by in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD). The thermal expansion coefficient of BSFZ is 10.5×10−6K−1, which is lower than that of cobalt-based perovskite materials. The BSFZ membrane was also used to construct reactors for the partial oxidation of methane (POM) to syngas. Results show that the BSFZ membrane can be operated for the POM reaction for more than 100h without any fractures. The CO selectivity of 97% is obtained. The steady oxygen permeation flux reaches around 2.5mL/mincm2 during POM reaction.

Abstract:A synthetic route for advanced perovskites is elucidated that consists of a combined EDTA/citrate complexing of metal cations and the subsequent drying and firing at moderate temperatures. A fine-scale intermixing of cations is maintained during all the processing steps. The perovskite-type oxide is formed already in an intermediate step at 700°C by the reaction of an ultra-finely dispersed powder consisting of a mixed barium–strontium carbonate, a zinc–iron spinel, and zinc oxide. The process yields powders of good sinterability and finally dense ceramics composed of stoichiometric perovskite grains of the type (Ba,Sr)(Zn,Fe)O3−δ.

Abstract:Cobalt-free oxides GdxBa1−xFeO3−δ (0.01≤x≤0.1) were achieved by a solid state reaction method. It is found that GdxBa1−xFeO3−δ (0.025≤x≤0.1) exhibits the cubic perovskite structure. Among GdxBa1−xFeO3−δ (0.025≤x≤0.1), the Gd0.025Ba0.975FeO3−δ (GBF2.5) membrane shows the outstanding phase structure stability and the highest oxygen permeation, which can reach 1.44ml·cm−2·min−1 at 950°C under air/He oxygen partial pressure gradient. The GBF2.5 membrane was successfully operated for more than 100h at 800°C and the oxygen permeation flux through the membrane is 0.62ml·cm−2·min−1. After 100h oxygen permeation experiment at 800°C, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDXS) demonstrate that the GBF2.5 exhibits phase structure stability even at intermediate temperature.

Abstract:Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF), a mixed oxygen ionic and electronic conducting ceramic derived from SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (SCF), was re-evaluated for its possible application as an oxygen semi-permeable membrane and membrane reactor for partial oxidation of light hydrocarbons. The partial substitution of Sr2+ with Ba2+ in SCF led to an increase in the phase stability of the cubic perovskite structure. Both BSCF and SCF were found to have high oxygen nonstoichiometry. However, BSCF possessed a higher oxygen nonstoichiometry than SCF at room temperature, but a similar value at high temperatures. This resulted in the lower chemical expansion for BSCF than SCF. The doping of Ba2+ in SCF led to the decrease of the electronic conductivity, but an increase in the oxygen ionic conductivity. The oxygen permeation study of the BSCF membrane demonstrated that the permeation rate was mainly rate-determined by the slow surface exchange kinetics at the oxygen lean side (or reaction side) membrane surface. The high ionic conductivity and the slow surface exchange kinetics resulted in the surface oxygen partial pressure at the reaction side membrane surface to be much higher than the surrounded atmosphere, therefore protecting the BSCF membrane from reduction.

Abstract:A series of mixed ionic–electronic conducting materials, BaCo0.7Fe0.3−xZrxO3−δ (x=0–0.12) were successfully synthesized and evaluated as potential ceramic membrane materials for oxygen separation applications. Effects of zirconium content on the crystal structure, internal and surface morphologies, electrical conductivity, structural stability and oxygen permeability of these membranes were systematically studied. A basic perovskite structure was for x=0.04–0.12, and the grain size of the samples gradually decreases with increasing zirconium content. The structural stabilities of the membranes in different atmospheres (H2, O2 and CO2) are significantly improved by substituting an appropriate amount of iron by zirconium. However, increase of the zirconium content also leads to a decrease in the electrical conductivity, which is confirmed by the first principles calculations. With increasing the zirconium content, oxygen permeation flux of the membranes increases and reaches a peak at x=0.06, and then decreases. The highest oxygen permeation flux of 2.7mlmin−1cm−2 at 925°C is achieved by the 1mm-thick BaCo0.7Fe0.24Zr0.06O3−δ membrane. With the same zirconium content, samples with larger grain sizes have remarkably higher oxygen permeation flux. Both theoretical and experimental works indicate that the oxygen permeability depends on the combined effect of the oxygen vacancy concentration, grain size and electrical conductivity.

Abstract:An advanced perovskite Ba0.75Sr0.25Fe0.95P0.05O3‐δ exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity and durability as a novel cobalt‐free cathode for oxygen reduction reaction, as evidenced by experimental and computational tools, representing a significant advancement in developing promising cobalt‐free cathode materials for intermediate‐to‐low temperature solid oxide fuel cells.Developing low‐cost, efficient, and durable cobalt‐free perovskite oxides for oxygen reduction reaction at intermediate‐to‐low temperatures is crucial to enhance the viability of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), a promising ingredient for establishing a more sustainable future. Herein, a highly active and robust cobalt‐free perovskite Ba0.75Sr0.25Fe0.95P0.05O3‐δ (BSFP) oxygen electrode via a facile co‐doping strategy for intermediate‐to‐low temperature SOFCs (ILT‐SOFCs) is reported by a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Attributed to stable and oxygen defect‐rich structure, and remarkable intrinsic oxygen transport kinetics, the BSFP cathode shows exceptional catalytic performance, including record‐level power output among iron‐based perovskite cathodes (1464 mW cm–2 at 600 °C), low area‐specific resistance (≈0.1 Ω cm2 at 600 °C), robust stability both in symmetrical and single cell configurations, and outstanding CO2 tolerance/reversibility. The first‐principle calculations validate the role of co‐doping of strontium and phosphorus for the high activity and durability. Central to this work is the combined experiment‐calculation approach to point to an effective strategy in the development of highly active and stable perovskite‐type cathodes for ILT‐SOFCs and related applications.
