Abstract:Zincum-doped ceramic membrane materials based on BaCo0.4Fe0.4ZnxZr(0.2−x)O3−δ with 0≤x≤0.2 were synthesized by combining citric acid and ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) complexing method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zn0.2O3−δ ceramic oxide exhibits a pure cubic perovskite structure. Oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) profile indicates that BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zn0.2O3−δ possesses a good phase reversibility. An oxygen permeation flux of 0.65ml/mincm2 was obtained at 950°C and a single activation energy of 67kJ/mol was observed for the oxygen permeation in the temperature range of 600–950°C. No decline was found during more than 100h oxygen permeation.

Abstract:The mixed ion and electron conducting oxides of SrCo1-yTayO3-δ (0≤y≤0.3) powders were prepared by solid state reaction. By doping 10mol% of tantalum on the B-site of SrCoO3, the cubic perovskite structure of the SrCoO3 is stable and a high oxygen permeation flux is achieved. The phase structure of the perovskite-type oxide of SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) revealing that SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ exhibits a good phase structure stability and reversibility in air. The oxygen permeation is predominated by oxygen ion bulk diffusion at the temperature≥900°C. During the long-term operation, the SrCo0.9Ta0.1O3-δ membrane is operated at 900°C for more than 520h with a steady oxygen permeation flux of around 1.36×10-6mol/scm2 with a membrane thickness of 0.65mm under He/air gradient. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Novel cobalt-free perovskite-type oxides of Ba1-xSrxFeO3-δ (x = 0–0.4) and Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe1-yTiyO3-δ (y = 0–0.12) were successfully prepared by traditional solid-state method and systematically characterized as oxygen permeation membranes. When doping strontium ranges from ×  = 0.2 to 0.4, cubic perovskite-type structure can be stabilized down to ambient temperature for Ba1-xSrxFeO3-δ. The oxygen permeation flux decreases but the structural stability increases slightly with increasing Sr doping level. The Ba0.8Sr0.2FeO3-δ membrane shows the highest oxygen permeation flux of 1.25 mL cm−2 min−1 at 900 °C under air/He gradient oxygen partial pressure condition for a 1 mm thick membrane. The Ti substitution for partial Fe enhances significantly the chemical and structural stability of Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe1-yTiyO3-δ against H2 and CO2 containing atmospheres but at a slight expense of oxygen permeability. The Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe0.92Ti0.08O3-δ membrane, with excellent structural stability and high oxygen permeation flux of 0.93 mL cm−2 min−1 at 900 °C, shows great potential in oxygen separation and related membrane reactor applications.

Abstract:A series of mixed ionic–electronic conducting materials, BaCo0.7Fe0.3−xZrxO3−δ (x=0–0.12) were successfully synthesized and evaluated as potential ceramic membrane materials for oxygen separation applications. Effects of zirconium content on the crystal structure, internal and surface morphologies, electrical conductivity, structural stability and oxygen permeability of these membranes were systematically studied. A basic perovskite structure was for x=0.04–0.12, and the grain size of the samples gradually decreases with increasing zirconium content. The structural stabilities of the membranes in different atmospheres (H2, O2 and CO2) are significantly improved by substituting an appropriate amount of iron by zirconium. However, increase of the zirconium content also leads to a decrease in the electrical conductivity, which is confirmed by the first principles calculations. With increasing the zirconium content, oxygen permeation flux of the membranes increases and reaches a peak at x=0.06, and then decreases. The highest oxygen permeation flux of 2.7mlmin−1cm−2 at 925°C is achieved by the 1mm-thick BaCo0.7Fe0.24Zr0.06O3−δ membrane. With the same zirconium content, samples with larger grain sizes have remarkably higher oxygen permeation flux. Both theoretical and experimental works indicate that the oxygen permeability depends on the combined effect of the oxygen vacancy concentration, grain size and electrical conductivity.

Abstract:Dense oxygen permeable membranes are expected to have great impact on oxygen production and oxygen-involved industrial processes. Ba 0.5Sr 0.5Co 0.8Fe 0.2O 3-δ is of highest oxygen permeability at elevated temperatures. A novel composite ceramic preparation route for Ba 0.5Sr 0.5Co 0.8Fe 0.2O 3-δ, was developed by directly produced stable BaZrO 3-based secondary phase particles (SPP) via addition of ZrO 2 and iso-molar excess BaO, aiming at improving mechanical properties. It revealed that as-synthesized composites could get a well-developed and fine-grained microstructure, there being secondary phase particles as the grain growth inhibitor, and the mechanical properties and oxygen permeation are improved. For the composite with addition of 10% ZrO 2 + 10% BaO, a well-developed and fine-grained microstructure has been obtained. Compared to the pure phase BSCF5582, the three-point bending strength of the composite with addition of 5% ZrO 2 + 5% BaO increases by 68% and its oxygen permeation rate is much higher below 850°C with the smaller apparent activation energy. Additionally, the electrical properties of the composites are also affected by the inclusion of SPP: conductivity decreases with the SPP content increasing, while the hysteresis of conductivity declines due to the relative stable carrier concentration.

Abstract:The SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3-δ(SCF) oxygen-permeable membranes were fabricated by solid-state reaction method.The preparation condition and stability of the as-prepared samples were conducted can be obtained by controlling the solid-state-reaction temperature at 950 ℃.In the reaction,the reacting materials contacted with the each other were high active,that could lead to the improvement of conversion of the SCF production,so resulted in the stability of as prepared samples,which had lept phase compostion as unchangeable as fresh ones after long term exposed in the atmosphere and experimented oxygen permeation.

Abstract:A novel chlorine-doped oxygen permeable membrane based on Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF) is developed and shows an improved oxygen permeation flux at intermediate temperature compared to un-doped BSCF. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates the introduction of chlorine element weakened the metal-oxygen bond and increased the mobility of lattice oxygen in BSCF.

Abstract:Perovskite-type Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCFO) powders were synthesized using two methods, solid-state reaction (SSR) method and citrate-EDTA complexing method (CC-EDTA). Then the powders were pressed to green disks of 19 mm in diameter and sintered at 1140 degrees C for 5 h. The shrinkage rate and relative density of the membranes prepared from the perovskite-type powders were determined and calculated, and the powders and derived membranes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the shrinkage rates of the two kinds of disks are nearly the same ( about 10%). The disks prepared by the SSR method had a bigger grain size and lower relative density than those prepared by the CC-EDTA method. The conductivity of the membranes prepared by the SSR method was about 38 S/cm, higher than that of the membranes prepared by the CC-EDTA method, which was about 30 S/cm, at the same temperature of 600 degrees C

Abstract:Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF), a mixed oxygen ionic and electronic conducting ceramic derived from SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (SCF), was re-evaluated for its possible application as an oxygen semi-permeable membrane and membrane reactor for partial oxidation of light hydrocarbons. The partial substitution of Sr2+ with Ba2+ in SCF led to an increase in the phase stability of the cubic perovskite structure. Both BSCF and SCF were found to have high oxygen nonstoichiometry. However, BSCF possessed a higher oxygen nonstoichiometry than SCF at room temperature, but a similar value at high temperatures. This resulted in the lower chemical expansion for BSCF than SCF. The doping of Ba2+ in SCF led to the decrease of the electronic conductivity, but an increase in the oxygen ionic conductivity. The oxygen permeation study of the BSCF membrane demonstrated that the permeation rate was mainly rate-determined by the slow surface exchange kinetics at the oxygen lean side (or reaction side) membrane surface. The high ionic conductivity and the slow surface exchange kinetics resulted in the surface oxygen partial pressure at the reaction side membrane surface to be much higher than the surrounded atmosphere, therefore protecting the BSCF membrane from reduction.

Abstract:Mixed ionic electronic conductor La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta in the porous form can be used as cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells and supports for thin oxygen separation membranes. La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8 O3-delta porous ceramics were prepared by solid state reaction. The porosity and pore size were investigated as a function of sintering temperature, molding pressure and amount of organic additive. The experimental results show that with increasing porosity, its nitrogen permeability increases, but its electrical conductivity decreases as described by sigma = sigma (0).(1 - P)(3.1).

Abstract:In this study, perovskite-type La 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 0.3 Fe 0.6 M 0.1 O 3− δ (M = Cu, Zn) powders were synthesized using a scalable reverse co-precipitation method, presenting them as novel materials for oxygen transport membranes. The comprehensive study covered various aspects including oxygen permeability, crystal structure, conductivity, morphology, CO 2 tolerance, and long-term regenerative durability with a focus on phase structure and composition. The membrane La 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 0.3 Fe 0.6 Zn 0.1 O 3 − δ exhibited high oxygen permeation fluxes, reaching up to 0.88 and 0.64 mL·min −1 cm −2 under air/He and air/CO 2 gradients at 1173 K, respectively. After 1600 h of CO 2 exposure, the perovskite structure remained intact, showcasing superior CO 2 resistance. A combination of first principles simulations and experimental measurements was employed to deepen the understanding of Cu/Zn substitution effects on the structure, oxygen vacancy formation, and transport behavior of the membranes. These findings underscore the potential of this highly CO 2 -tolerant membrane for applications in high-temperature oxygen separation. The enhanced insights into the oxygen transport mechanism contribute to the advancement of next-generation membrane materials.

Abstract:Oxygen permeation membrane with mixed ionic and electronic conductivities is a very attractive technology for the production of oxygen of high purity in an energy- and cost-efficient way. Recently, Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ perovskite with A-site deficiency has drawn a lot of attentions for its high oxygen permeation flux and good stability. In this work, for further improving the oxygen permeation performance of Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ membrane, a three-layer structure consisting of a dense thin film and two porous support layers is applied. The three-layer Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ membrane achieved an oxygen permeation flux as high as 3.93 ml cm−2 min−1 at 900 °C, which is nearly 1.5 times higher than that of the conventional membrane with the same overall thickness. By increasing the flow rate of sweep gas, the oxygen permeation flux of the three-layer membrane was further enhanced up to 4.85 ml cm−2 min−1. A short term stability test of 100 h was conducted and no obvious degradation of the oxygen permeation performance was observed, which indicated that Ba0.9Co0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3−δ membrane with a three-layer structure could be very promising for the application in an oxygen generator.

Abstract:Mixed conducting SrCo0.9Nb0.1O3−δ perovskite is a newly developed promising ceramic membrane material for air separation. In this work, SrCo0.9Nb0.1O3−δ was further optimized by the introduction of Ba to partially replace Sr in the A-site of the perovskite structure. The phase structure, phase stability, carbonate formation rate under carbon dioxide atmosphere, electrical conductivity, oxygen desorption properties, and oxygen permeation properties of BaxSr1−xCo0.9Nb0.1O3−δ (BSCNx) with varying Ba2+ doping level were systematically investigated. Pure phase cubic perovskite was formed at x=0.0–0.8. BSCNx (x=0.0–0.8) can be stably operated in atmospheres with oxygen partial pressure varying from at least 1atm to as low as 10−5atm (Ar atmosphere). The barium doping concentration had a significant effect on electrical conductivity and oxygen permeability of the membranes. BSCN0.6 had the highest oxygen permeation flux of 2.67×10−6molcm−2s−1 for 0.87mm thickness at 900°C and the highest oxygen ionic conductivity of 1.38Scm−1 at 900°C.

Abstract:A study of oxygen permeation material Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta ( BSCF) is presented. The O-2-TPD, nonstoichiometry (delta), electrical conductivity (sigma) and oxygen permeation were investigated. In the experiment of O-2-TPD, three oxygen-releasing peaks are observed: one peak at low temperature is attributed to the absorbed oxygen at the position of V-0(..), the other two peaks are related with the release of oxygen ions at two different positions, in the BSCF crystal lattice. At 470degreesC, delta reaches minimum and sigma achieves maximum: with increasing temperature, absorbed oxygen at the position of V-0(..) is released, resulting in the first peak of O-2-TPD; the rest of absorbed oxygen entered BSCF lattice, causing the decrease of 5; the temperature dependence of the conductivity demonstrates increasing conductivity with temperatures up to a maximum at about 470degreesC, indicating thermally activated p-type semiconductivity, which changed to metallic conduction behavior above 470degreesC. Furthermore, the experiment shows that the or maximum at the heating step is higher than that obtained at cooling step, which can be explained: when heating, some absorbed oxygen at the position of V-0(..) enters the lattice, 6 decreases and concentration of Co4+ & Fe4+ increases, leading to an enhanced p-type conductivity of BSCF; on the other hand, when cooling from high temperature, absorbed oxygen at the position of V-0(..) does not exist. In the experiment of oxygen permeation, BSCF proves to be a suitable material for oxygen-separating at above 850degreesC, its oxygen permeability J(O2) is higher than 1 mumol/cm(2)s with air as feed gas and He as sweep gas, the activation energy Ea is 63.1 kJ/mol.
Properties of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ Composite Membrane

Abstract:The perovskite mixed ionic-electronic conducting membranes (MIEC) are widely used in solid oxide fuel cells, oxygen separation and the partial oxidation of methane to syngas. The synthesis process and properties of the composite membrane including the porous support layer and the thin dense layer with the same material, Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF5582), were investigated in the present study. The powders of perovskite structure BSCF5582 for porous support layer were synthesized by solid-state reaction method (SSR) at 1233 K for 2~6 hours, while the powders of BSCF5582 for dense layer were synthesized by citrate-EDTA complexing method (CC-EDTA) after being calcined at 1173 K for 2~6 hours. The support layer with a thickness of 0.6 mm was made by tape calendering process (TCP), and then pre-sintered at 1073 K for 1 h. The dense layer with a thickness of 30 μm was formed by dip-casting process. The composite membrane of BSCF was formed by co-firing the two layers at 1413 K for 10 hours. Porous support layer and dense layer were clearly identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The conductivity of the composite membrane is 35S·cm-1 at 773K. The electrical-conduction behavior of BSCF obeys the p-type small polaron-hopping mechanism.

Abstract:A series of foreign oxides including CuO, ZnO, NiO, Co2O3 and Al2O3 were investigated as sintering aids to facilitate the densification of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF) membranes for oxygen separation. The effects of these oxides on the phase structure, sintering behavior, electrical conductivity and oxygen permeability of BSCF oxide were systematically studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O-2-TPD), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), four-probe direct current (DC) conductivity and gas permeation measurements. The results showed that reactions between the membrane material and the foreign oxides took place at elevated temperatures. These oxides displayed different sintering behaviors during the sintering process of BSCF perovskite, with obvious improvement demonstrated in the case of CuO, minimal effects observed from ZnO, Co2O3 and NiO samples, and suppressing effects from Al2O3. The electrical conductivity was clearly increased by introducing Co2O3 as a sintering aid, yielding a maximum value of 70 S cm(-1) at 900 degrees C. The oxygen permeation fluxes of the membrane samples from BSCF + NiO (5 wt.%) and BSCF + ZnO (5 wt.%) are comparable to those of pristine BSCF membranes, whereas the fluxes decreased noticeably when the other foreign oxides were introduced. Abstract:Pure oxygen is an important raw material with many important applications. The production of oxygen via a conducting ceramic membrane is a new, cost-effective and advanced technology with the advantage of continuous oxygen production. The perovskite-type mixed-conducting oxide Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF) exhibits superb oxygen permeability, yet it suffers from poor phase stability. In this study, we aim to improve the operational stability of the BSCF membrane by introducing a high-valence W6+ ion as a B-site dopant. Its effect on the phase composition, structure, structural stability, electrical conductivity, oxygen transfer rate and oxygen permeability as a membrane is systematically investigated. Upon the partial substitution of cobalt and iron in the W6+-doped BSCF, single/double perovskite composites are formed instead of single perovskite composites. Remarkably, the formation of the single/double perovskite composites enhances the oxygen permeation stability without obviously compromising the oxygen permeability. Among the various materials, the composite with the nominal composition of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.1W0.1O3-δ shows the best performance in terms of stability and oxygen permeability. These findings thus introduce a new way to design conducting ceramic membranes for oxygen separation at high temperatures.

Abstract:A dual phase membrane of 60 wt % Ce0.9Gd0.1O2-δ-40 wt % Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (60CGO-40BSCF), which exhibits high oxygen permeation, has been prepared. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that the two oxides are compatible. An oxygen permeation flux of 2.1 mL/(min·cm2) is obtained with a 0.5 mm thick membrane under the gradient of air/He at 975 °C, which keeps steady during 180 h of operation. The oxygen permeation process is mainly controlled by the bulk diffusion of oxygen ions in 60CGO-40BSCF membrane when the membrane thickness is higher than 0.8 mm and controlled by both the surface reaction and the bulk diffusion at reduced thickness of ∼0.5 mm as the temperature increased from 800 to 975 °C.
