Abstract:The development of high performance perovskite cathode for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) relies upon the knowledge and understanding of the interplay between the metal oxide components, structure, redox properties and conductivity. In this work, we partially substituted Fe on SrFeO3-delta with Nb. In particular, 3 Nb-doped compositions were prepared, e.g. SrNb0.5Fe0.95O3-delta (SNF0.05), SrNb0.1Fe0.9O3-delta (SNF0.1) and SrNb0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (SNF0.2). Mossbauer spectroscopy revealed decreasing ratio of Fe4+ to Fe3+ at the higher Nb doping content which translates to the gradual decrease of the average Fe oxidation state from 3.403 (for SNF0.05) to 3.375 (for SNF0.1) and to 3.291 (for SNF0.2). Likewise, the oxygen desorption process and the thermal expansion coefficients decreased with increasing Nb content, therefore providing evidence on their correlation with the thermal reduction of Fe4+. The temperature-dependent oxygen nonstoichiometry displayed two different regimes separated by a transition temperature of 625 degrees C, below which SNF0.2 showed the highest nonstoichiometry and above which SNF0.05 provided the highest nonstoichiometry. The analogous shifting in trends was reproduced for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance which signifies oxygen nonstoichiometry as the main variable affecting ORR performance. Abstract:Bi2O3 doped BaFeO3−δ on the B-site as a cobalt free perovskite cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells is evaluated. The BaFe1−xBixO3−δ (BFBx) powders are synthesized by solid state reaction. It is found that Bi2O3 doping stabilizes the BaFeO3 cubic phase. The new cathode is compatible with Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 even calcined at 1000 °C for 10 h. The electronic conductivity shows a transformation from semiconductor to metal conductor, and achieves its maximum value of 28.1 S cm−1 for BFB10 at 800 °C. The δ is as high as 0.408 for BFB10 determined by iodometric titration. This leads to the free volume in crystal lattice of BFB10 21.60% higher than that of BaNb0.05Fe0.95O3−δ. The area specific resistance is only 0.133 Ω cm2 for BFB10 at 750 °C and the average TEC is 26.697 × 10−6 K−1 measured from room temperature to 800 °C. The peak power density of Ni-YSZ|YSZ|GDC|BFB10 cell is 646.28 mW cm−2 at 750 °C, higher than that of single cell using LSCF as cathode. These show that BFBx perovskite oxides with cubic phase are promising cathodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:Chemical to electrical energy conversion using a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) becomes more practical as the operating temperature is lowered to 600 degrees C and below. Given the thermally activated nature of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode side, development of cathode catalysts with very low polarisation resistance is essential. Here, we showed that partial substitution of Co within SrNb0.1Co0.9O3-delta by Fe (up to 0.5) triggers the formation of oxygen non-stoichiometry while preserving the primitive cubic lattice, thus substantially enhancing the ORR performance below 600 degrees C (relative to the parent compound). Close correlation between the oxygen non-stoichiometry and ORR activity trends was found to some extent. SrNb0.1Co0.7Fe0.2O3-delta (SNCF0.2) cathode exhibits a very low area specific resistance value of 0.052 Omega cm(2) at 600 degrees C which translates to superior fuel cell performance, e. g. peak power density of 1587 mW cm(-2) at 600 degrees C. Moreover, the synergistic relationship between ORR activity, thermal expansion coefficient and enhanced CO2 resistance attests to the significance of the SNCF cathode. The last attribute is envisioned as a dominant factor for applications using alternative fuels (e. g. CO which normally contains CO2) and in a portable single-chamber SOFC.

Abstract:A cobalt-free perovskite oxide Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe0.8Cu0.2O3−δ (BSFC) is employed as a cathode material for intermediate-temperature proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells. Symmetrical electrochemical cell with the configuration of BSFC-BZCY/BZCY/BSFC-BZCY is applied for the impedance study. The single cell, consisting of BSFC-BZCY/BZCY/NiO-BZCY structure, is assembled and tested from 600 to 700 °C with humidified hydrogen (∼3% H2O) as the fuel and the static air as the oxidant. A maximum power density of 430 mW cm−2 is obtained at 700 °C for the single cell. Long-term stability of the BSFC-BZCY/BZCY/NiO-BZCY single cell at 600 °C for 40 h has also been studied. Preliminary results demonstrat that cobalt-free oxide BSFC is a very promising cathode for application in proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:Cobalt-free perovskite cathode with excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) properties below 800°C is a key material toward wide implementation of intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. This work reports the phase structure, microstructure and performance of such cathode based on the composite phases of triclinic Ba0.9Bi0.1FeO3-δ, cubic BaFeO3 and orthorhombic BaFe2O4 prepared by sol–gel route. The resultant barium ferrites composite cathode exhibits uniform particles, pores and elements distribution. In particular, favorable ORR properties of this cathode is demonstrated by very low interfacial resistance of only 0.036 and 0.072Ωcm2 at 750 and 700°C and maximum power density of 1295 and 840mWcm−2 at 750 and 700°C.

Abstract:It is generally recognized that the phase transition of a perovskite may be detrimental to the connection between cathode and electrolyte. Moreover, certain phase transitions may induce the formation of poor electronic and ionic conducting phase(s), thereby lowering the electrochemical performance of the cathode. Here, we present a study on the phase transition of a cobalt-free perovskite (SrNb(0.1)Fe(0.9)O(3-δ), SNF) and evaluate its effect on the electrochemical performance of the fuel cell. SNF exists as a primitive perovskite structure with space group P4mm (99) at room temperature. As evidenced by in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements over the temperature range of 600 to 1000 °C, SNF undergoes a transformation to a tetragonal structure with a space group I4/m (87). This phase transition is accompanied by a moderate change in the volume, allowing a good cathode/electrolyte interface on thermal cycling. According to the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy evaluation, the I4/m phase exhibits positive effects on the cathode's performance, showing the highest oxygen reduction reaction activity of cobalt-free cathodes reported so far. This activity improvement is attributed to enhanced oxygen surface processes.

Abstract:SrNb0.1Co0.9O3−δ (SNC) perovskite oxide has been prepared by high-energy ball milling followed by calcination at 1100°C. According to oxygen temperature-programmed desorption and thermogravimetry analysis results, highly charged Nb5+ successfully stabilizes the perovskite structure to avoid order-disorder phase transition. The electrical conductivity reaches 550Scm−1 at 300°C in air and as high as 106Scm−1 under P(O2)=1×10−5atm at 900°C. The high electrical conductivity is beneficial in improving the charge-transfer process for the oxygen reduction reaction on the cathode. Based on the defect chemical analysis, the Nb-doping in SrCoO3−δ perovskite facilitates the formation of Co2+, which increases oxygen nonstoichiometry and, subsequently, the mixed valence of [Co2+]/[Co3+] under lower oxygen partial pressure. A relatively low thermal expansion coefficient of 19.1×10−6K−1 in air was achieved. All above properties show SNC to be a promising cathode material in the practical application of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:The sol-gel method was adopted to synthesize novel cobalt and strontium-free Pr0.5Ba0.5Fe1-xNixO3-δ (x = 0 and 0.2, abbreviated as PBF and PBFN) perovskite oxides. It was aimed to discuss the influence of B-site Ni substitution on structure and electrochemical properties of Pr0.5Ba0.5FeO3-δ. The results indicated that PBF-based oxides were both cubic perovskite structure. Ni atoms were successfully doped into the B sites of PBF, resulting in lattice shrinkage. Ni doping could enhance the oxygen reduction activity by increasing the surface oxygen content and the release of lattice oxygen to increase oxygen vacancies. At 700 °C, the cathodic polarization resistance of PBFN (0.0726 Ω·cm2) was lower than PBF (0.122 Ω·cm2), and the maximum power density (PPD) of PBFN (528.79 mW·cm−2) was higher than PBF (259.65 mW·cm−2). After 80 h polarization, the open-circuit voltage did not change significantly. Therefore, PBFN has the potential to be more suitable cathode material of IT-SOFCs.

Abstract:Perovskite-type cathode Ba1-xCo0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O3-δ (B1-xCFN, x = 0.0-0.15) are proposed for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell(IT-SOFC). The changes in crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrochemical reaction through XRD, SEM, ac impedance spectroscopy and single-cell test are studied. The results show that except for the B0.95CFN has a small amount of impurity,B1-xCFN oxides present cubic perovskite structure. The porosity decreases as A-site deficiency increases, B0.9CFN has a lowest porosity. The interfacial polarization resistance of B0.9CFN drops nearly 66.2% than BCFN at 800 ◦C. The process of generating lattice oxygen is the major rate-limiting step when oxygen partial pressure is higher than 0.01 atm. Ba deficiency mainly accelerates the ionization process of oxygen atoms in the cathode bulk. The performance of single-cell B0.9CFN/SDC/Ni0.9Cu0.1-SDC is higher than other cathodes in the operation temperature, which means B0.9CFN is a better cathode for IT-SOFC.

Abstract:This study systematically investigated the effects of a single B-site dopant (Fe, x = 0–1.0) on the structure and oxygen reduction reaction of the Ba0.9K0.1CoO3−δ (BKC) material used as a cathode for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). The structural, electronic, and electrocatalytic properties of the cathode materials prepared by a sol–gel method were comparatively characterized. The results indicated that cubic perovskite structure BKF x C (Fe, x = 0.5, 0.6) materials had been formed by calcination at 900 °C for 5 h. Moreover, in order to examine the electrochemical properties of BKF x C, the BKF x C cathode was constructed on the Sm0.075Nd0.075Ce0.85O2−δ (SNDC) electrolyte (BKFC/SNDC/BKFC: denoted as symmetric cells); the lowest polarization resistance (R P) was obtained for the BKF0.5C symmetric cell (1.6 Ω·cm2 at 550 °C), which demonstrated much higher electrocatalytic activity than that of a similar cell with the BKF0.6C cathode (2.87 Ω·cm2 at 550 °C). A single cell with the BKF0.5C cathode achieved a top power density of 752 mW·cm–2 at 550 °C, which is 0.35 times higher than that of the single cell with the BKF0.6C cathode (power density: 556 mW·cm–2). The corresponding total interface R P of the fuel cell was 0.303 Ω·cm2, lower than that of the doping amount of 0.6 (550 °C, 0.402 Ω·cm2). Meanwhile, O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis were used to characterize the valence of Fe and Co changing from +4 to +3 as well as the stable structure of the material from room temperature to 600/1000 °C. As a result, a highly efficient method for the innovative BKFC cathode was developed in this work.

Abstract:A new perovskite cathode, Sr0.95Ce0.05CoO3-δ, performs well for oxygen-reduction reactions in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). We gain insight into the crystal structure of Sr1-xCexCoO3-δ (x = 0.05, 0.1) and temperature-dependent structural evolution of Sr0.95Ce0.05CoO3-δ by X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, and scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments. Sr0.9Ce0.1CoO3-δ shows a perfectly cubic structure (a = a0), with a large oxygen deficiency in a single oxygen site; however, Sr0.95Ce0.05CoO3-δ exhibits a tetragonal perovskite superstructure with a double c axis, defined in the P4/mmm space group, that contains two crystallographically different cobalt positions, with distinct oxygen environments. The structural evolution of Sr0.95Ce0.05CoO3-δ at high temperatures was further studied by in situ temperature-dependent NPD experiments. At 1100 K, the oxygen atoms in Sr0.95Ce0.05CoO3-δ show large and highly anisotropic displacement factors, suggesting a significant ionic mobility. The test cell with a La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.83Mg0.17O3-δ-electrolyte-supported (∼300 μm thickness) configuration yields peak power densities of 0.25 and 0.48 W cm(-2) at temperatures of 1023 and 1073 K, respectively, with pure H2 as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant. The electrochemical impedance spectra evolution with time of the symmetric cathode fuel cell measured at 1073 K shows that the Sr0.95Ce0.05CoO3-δ cathode possesses superior ORR catalytic activity and long-term stability. Mixed ionic-electronic conduction properties of Sr0.95Ce0.05CoO3-δ account for its good performance as an oxygen-reduction catalyst.
A Novel Self‐Assembled Cobalt‐Free Perovskite Composite Cathode with Triple‐Conduction for Intermediate Proton‐Conducting Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:A BaCexFe1–xO3–δ composite cathode with a heterojunction structure is applied for proton‐conducting solid oxide fuel cells. Oxygen reduction reactivity can be significantly enhanced by tailoring the Ce/Fe ratios. A cell power output of 1525 mW cm–2 at 700 °C is achieved by using a spray method to optimize the cathode microstructure. A traditional composite cathode for proton‐conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H‐SOFCs) is typically obtained by mixing cathode materials and proton conducting electrolyte of BaCe0.7Y0.2Zr0.1O3–δ (BZCY), providing chemical and thermal compatibility with the electrolyte. Here, a series of triple‐conducing and cobalt‐free iron‐based perovskites as cathodes for H‐SOFCs is reported. Specifically, BaCexFe1–xO3–δ (x = 0.36, 0.43, and 0.50) shows various contents of two single phase perovskites with an in situ heterojunction structure as well as triple conductivity by tailoring the Ce/Fe ratios. The cell performance with the optimized BaCe0.36Fe0.64O3–δ (BCF36) cathode composition reaches 1056 mW cm−2 at 700 °C. Moreover, a record cell performance of 1525 mW cm−2 at 700 °C is obtained by modifying the BCF36 cathode microstructure through a spraying method, demonstrating high promise with Co‐free cathodes for H‐SOFCs.

Abstract:A cobalt‐free perovskite oxide, Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (BSZF), was investigated as a novel cathode material for intermediate‐temperature solid‐oxide fuel cells (IT‐SOFCs). Room‐temperature nonstoichiometry of BSZF was as high as 0.412, which was favorable for oxygen–reduction reaction. At 700°C, the polarization resistances were as low as 0.22 and 0.13 Ω·cm2, respectively, for pure and impregnated BSZF cathodes under open‐circuit conditions, suggesting that oxygen‐deficient BSZF was a promising cathode candidate for IT‐SOFCs.

Abstract:Mixed oxygen ion and electron-conducting materials are viable cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells due to their excellent oxygen transport kinetics and mixed electrical conductivity, which ensure highly efficient operation at low and medium temperatures. However, iron-based double perovskite oxides usually exhibit poor electrocatalytic activity due to low electron and oxygen ion conductivity. In this paper, Ca is doped in PrBaFe2O5+δ A-site to improve the electrochemical performance of PrBaFe2O5+δ. Results show that replacing Pr with Ca does not change the crystal structure, and the Ca doping effectively increases the adsorbed oxygen content and accelerates the migration and diffusion rate of O2− to the electrolyte|cathode interface. The polarization resistance of the symmetric cell PC0.15BF|CGO|PC0.15BF is 0.033 Ω·cm2 at 800 °C, which is about 56% lower than that of PBF, confirming the enhancement of the mixed conduction of oxygen ions and electrons. In addition, the anode-supported single cell has a peak power density of 512 mW·cm−2 at 800 °C.

Abstract:Efficient cathode materials are essential to the overall cell performance of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The high linear thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of traditional cobalt-containing cathode materials, cobalt poisoning, and the expensive nature of cobalt mean that cobalt-free cathode materials must be examined. Sr-doped cobalt-free BaZr 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ cathode materials were synthesised using the conventional solid-state reaction method, and investigated as potential cathode materials for SOFC application. The synthesised Ba 1-x Sr x Zr 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (BSZN0, BSZN25, BSZN5; x = 0, 0.25 and 0.5) samples were characterized via X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, dilatometer, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The XRD analysis of the synthesised samples revealed a well-defined peak position at 2theta, and indexed as pm-3 m cubic space group. At 800 °C, the electrical conductivity in air for BSZN0, BSZN25, and BSZN5 were 72.24 S/cm, 80.46 S/cm and 85.55 S/cm, respectively. The average linear thermal expansion coefficient obtained for BSZN0, BSZN25, and BSZN5 at 25 to 1000 °C were 10.4 × 10 –6 K −1 , 10. 9 × 10 –6 K −1 , and 11.2 × 10 –6 K −1 , respectively. The improved linear thermal elongation of BSZN0, BSZN25, and BSZN5 will ensure compatibility with commonly used electrolytes in SOFCs.
