Abstract:The clock system of Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiments provides precise clock and time stamps to the electronic system.When the clock system stops sending clock and time stamps for some unpredictable reasons,the electronics system cannot acquire data from detectors correctly.It will cause an impact on data acquisition and analysis.The clock alarm function in the trigger system is therefore designed for monitoring the clock condition and providing clock alarm signals if any error is found.

Abstract:This paper describes the design of the PMT Readout VME System developed by IHEP and Tsinghua University for the detector prototype of Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. The readout electronics and the trigger event selection, with estimated rates, are presented along with the timing synchronization between all of the electronic elements. The processing of the data from the front-end modules through data storage is discussed, along with the detector control system.

Abstract:This paper briefly introduces a design scheme of multifunction digital clock based on FPGA. On the basis of achieving basic functions such as timing, adjusting and chronopher, the scheme brings in new world-time function, which can convert Beijing Time to GMT quickly. The design input method of the scheme combines VHDL and block diagram. The digital clock is designed, compiled as well as simulated under Quartus II development environment, and tested on the FPGA hardware development board. The experiment verifies the design scheme, which offers references for the application of FPGA and the design of digital clock.

Abstract:Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment is dedicated to measuring the last unobserved neutrino mixing angle theta_13. The predicted precision on sin^2(2theta_13) is 0.01 at 90% confidence level. This document briefly reviews the measurement method and detector construction status. The first two anti-neutrino detectors' dry run result is also discussed. The Daya Bay near hall data taking is expected to commence in the summer of 2011 and the data taking of all of the three halls in the summer of 2012.

Abstract:We have designed a local trigger board for the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment, which is aimed to measure the neutrino mixing angle sin22θ13 with a precision down to 1% level. The local trigger board processes both the total number of coincident photomultiplier tube (PMT) hits and the PMT energy sum to make trigger decisions. With this design, a high trigger probability is achieved to meet the system requirement. The design of the local trigger board is presented.

Abstract:We have designed a trigger test board (TTB) to test the local trigger board (LTB) for the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment, which is aimed to measure the neutrino mixing angle sin 22θ 13with a precision down to 1% level at 90% C.L.. In this experiment, there are three modular detectors, which are located in two near halls and one far hall. The modular detector consists of three types of sub-detectors: the anti-neutrino detector (AD), the water Cherenkov detector (WCD) and the resistive plate chambers (RPC). AD and WCD use the same data readout electronics, including the front end electronic (FEE) and the local trigger board (LTB). To meet the experimental requirement, LTB needs to generate multiple types of triggers with high trigger probabilities. TTB is specially designed to test the LTB performance by generating programmable analog and digital signals required by the LTB. This article shows the design of TTB and the test results of LTB. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Purpose: The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), also known as JUNO-TAO. Located close to one of the reactors of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, TAO will measure the antineutrino energy spectrum precisely as a reference spectrum for JUNO. The data acquisition (DAQ) system is designed to acquire data from the TAO readout electronics and process it with software trigger and data compression algorithms. The data storage bandwidth is limited by the onsite network to be less than 100 Mb/s. Methods: The system is designed based on a distributed architecture, with fully decoupled modules to facilitate customized design and implementation. It is divided into two main components: the data flow system and the online software. The online software serves as the foundation, providing the electronics configuration, the process management, the run control, and the information sharing. The data flow system facilitates continuous data acquisition from various electronic boards or trigger systems, assembles and processes raw data, and ultimately stores it on the disk. Results: The core functionality of the system has been designed and developed. The usability of the data flow system interface and the software trigger results have been verified during the pre-installation testing phase. Conclusion: The DAQ system has been deployed for the TAO experiment. It has also successfully been applied to the integration test of the detector and electronics prototypes.

Abstract:The precise timing and synchronization system is an essential part for the ultra-fast electron and X-ray sources based on the photocathode injector where strict synchronization among RF, laser, and beams are required. In this paper, we present an integrated sub-100 femtosecond timing and synchronization system developed and demonstrated recently in Tsinghua University based on the collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. The timing and synchronization system includes the fiber-based CW carrier phase reference distribution system for delivering stabilized RF phase reference to multiple receiver clients, the Low Level RF (LLRF) control system to monitor and generate the phase and amplitude controllable pulse RF signal, and the laser-RF synchronization system for high precision synchronization between optical and RF signals. Each subsystem is characterized by its blocking structure and is also expansible. A novel asymmetric calibration sideband signal method was proposed for eliminating the non-linear distortion in the optical synchronization process. According to offline and online tests, the system can deliver a stable signal to each client and suppress the drift and jitter of the RF signal for the accelerator and the laser oscillator to less than 100 fs RMS (∼0.1° in 2856 MHz frequency). Moreover, a demo system with a LLRF client and a laser-RF synchronization client is deployed and operated successfully at the Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray source. The beam-based jitter measurement experiments have been conducted to evaluate the overall performance of the system, and the jitter sources are discussed.

Abstract:China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is a complex system engineering composed of particle accelerators, a target station, and neutron spectrometers with various equipment types and distribution. The collaborative operation of the equipment requires accurate clock synchronization and trigger distribution. Currently, to meet the requirements of different system devices, clock synchronization and trigger distribution in CSNS are implemented based on different methods, resulting in complex clock and trigger networks, demanding upgrades, and a lack of unified timestamps. This paper proposes a clock synchronization and trigger distribution scheme based on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and single-mode dual-core fiber link. The decoupling of clock phase synchronization and time base synchronization improves the frequency of phase compensation. Benefiting from the phase interpolator (PI) in the FPGA transceivers, high-precision phase compensation and phase deterministic control are realized, achieving picoseconds synchronization precision and stability in the four-level network. Based on the custom lightweight link layer protocol, by optimizing the routing method of data frames and adopting priority control, the transmission of multiple data is realized, and the hardware delay of the critical data, such as interlock, is guaranteed to be less than 1.5 μs in the four-level system. The scheme provides a general precise clock synchronization and distributed trigger method for CSNS devices, simplifies the system complexity, and is conducive to the system upgrade in the second stage.

Abstract:aF2 (Barium Fluoride) detector array is designed for the measurement of (n,{\gamma}) cross section precisely at CSNS-WNS (white neutron source at China Spallation Neutron Source). It is a 4{\pi}solid angle-shaped detector array consisting of 92 BaF2 crystal elements. To discriminate signals from BaF2 detector, pulse shape discrimination methodology is used, which is supported by waveform digitization technique. There are total 92 channels for digitizing. The precision and synchronization of clock distribution restricts the performance of waveform digitizing. In this paper, the clock prototype for BaF2 readout electronics at CSNS-WNS is introduced. It is based on PXIe platform and has a twin-stage tree topology. In the first stage, clock is distributed from the tree root to each PXIe crate synchronously through coaxial cable over long distance, while in the second stage, clock is further distributed to each electronic module through PXIe dedicated differential star bus. With the help of this topology, each tree node can fan out up to 20 clocks with 3U size. Test result shows the clock jitter is less than 20ps, which can meet the requirement of BaF2 readout electronics. Besides, this clock system has advantages of high density, simplicity, scalability and cost saving, which makes it can be used in other applications of clock distributing preciously.

Abstract:The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle theta13 to world-leading precision. The experiment deploys identical antineutrino detectors at distances of 400-1900m from six reactors in Daya Bay, China. Each detector incorporates two general-purpose monitoring cameras to ensure their safe construction, transportation and operation. The cameras must meet usage goals while satisfying stringent constraints on radioactivity, materials compatibility, interference and reliability. This article describes the system design, integration, operation and performance.

Abstract:The Jinping Neutrino Experiment(JNE), conducted within the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, aims to detect and analyze of solar neutrinos, geo-neutrinos, and supernova neutrinos. A one-ton prototype will soon be in commision with an upgrade from 30 channels to 60 channels, which will increase the data bandwidth by one to two orders of magnitude and exceed the capacity of the current CAEN DAQ system. Additionally, enhancing the performance and flexibility of JNE DAQ system is crucial. This paper presents the design of a new Tsinghua DAQ system for the JNE and its performance and stability. The new Tsinghua DAQ(THDAQ) system for JNE is based on the cPCI protocol and demonstrates powerful performance improvements: ADC ENOB of the THDAQ system approximately exceeds 9.8-bit, marking a 14% improvement over the CAEN DAQ system; The maximum clock deviation within a single chassis is 85.6 ps, satisfying sub-nanosecond synchronization criteria; Each DAQ board features two QSFP+ optical ports with 82.5Gbps transmission capability, while the PCIe board supports a transmission rate of 100.2 Gbps. In addition, comparative experiments between the two systems were also tested in detail. The analysis results of waveform and charge spectrum prove the high stability of the THDAQ system. This provides a foundation for the 60-channel and 4000-channel DAQ systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a clock system providing high quality timing reference for Time-Of-Flight (TOF) electronics, as well as other sub-systems in the new Beijing Spectrometer (BES III) is presented, which includes RF clock transmission, low-jitter clock regeneration and distribution. In addition, a new clock synchronizing and monitoring mechanism is developed and implemented with off-the-shelf devices, which can force the TOF clock to precisely synchronize to the beam bunches in the accelerator. The experimental results show the clock jitter (RMS) is better than 11 ps (the design spec is 20 ps), and the synchronization function works quite robustly. Now the clock system has been assembled to the spectrometer and is operating steadily.

Abstract:Muon Spin Rotation, Relaxation and Resonance ({\mu}SR) technology has an irreplaceable role in studying the microstructure and properties of materials, especially micro-magnetic properties. An experimental muon source is being built in China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) now. At the same time, a 128-channel {\mu}SR spectrometer as China's first {\mu}SR spectrometer is being developed. The time spectrum of {\mu}SR can be obtained by fitting the curve of positron count rate with time. This paper presents a 32-channel Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) implemented in a Xilinx Virtex-6 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for measuring the positron's flight time of {\mu}SR Spectrometer. Signal of each channel is sampled by 16 equidistant shifted-phase 200 MHz sampling clocks, so the TDC bin size is 312.5ps. The measuring range is up to 327us. This TDC has the ability to store multiple hit signals in a short time with a deep hit-buffer up to 512. Time tag is added to each data to record the moment when the data was detected. Programmable time window and channel shielding give the flexibility to choose the time range and channels of interest. The delay of each channel can be calibrated. The data is transmitted to data acquisition system (DAQ) through Gigabit Ethernet. TDC and control logic are configured in real time by DAQ. The results of test show that the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) precision of single channel is better than 273 ps with a low sensitivity to temperature and the linearity is pretty well.

Abstract:The subnanosecond time resolution readout system includes a time discriminator module and a TDC module is designed for reading the signals detected by the MCP from the Xray pulsar. The periodicity of the signals from the specific pulsar will be detected under a high background level with this system. Through the delay chain designed in the FPGA, the time accuracy of this TDC module is able to reach less than 500ps. To keep in line with the time resolution of the TDC, the jitter of the time discriminator module need to be designed less than 500ps. Through a special design with the chips ADCMP580 and NB7V52M, the time resolution required by pulsar-based navigation could be finally achieved by this readout system.

Abstract:Based on current situation of the study in this area, our work will introduce a miniature CPT atomic clock system with small physical size, high stability and lower power consumption. The use of our original innovational technology to fabricate small cells can avoid the complexity and difficulty of the anodic bonding technology. By this technology, we could accomplish the objective to minimize the occupied volume of the physical part of the system to 1 cm(3). The single FPGA chip is the main part of the control circuit to accomplish the slower start-up of the laser, two necessary locking loops to make the system work, and the temperature control logic. Our 3.035 GHz RF signal is generated from a TCXO via the technology of DDS. Our prototype is a significant progress to realize CSAC with the use of the single FPGA chip. We demonstrate our CPT clock prototype with the volume less than 100 cm(3). This prototype has frequency instability of 1 x 10(-10) for 1 s and 3 x 10(-11) for 1000 s.

Abstract:Shanghai HIgh repetition rate XFEL aNd Extreme light facility (SHINE) is China's first hard X-ray FEL light source, which is expected to provide cutting-edge research methods for scientific research. To achieve the design target of SHINE, a high-precision timing system synchronized with the RF synchronization system of the accelerator is required, which could provide trigger signals and bunch ID for equipment on the accelerator, beamlines, and experimental stations so that those devices can be triggered in the correct sequence. This paper proposes a timing system based on WR technology that uses the RF signal from the synchronization system of SHINE as a reference and realizes the broadcasting of RF synchronization clock, including frequency and timescale, through an optical fiber network, achieving a timing accuracy of 8 picoseconds in the four-level network. Two enhanced timing applications, including the machine clock fanout and the random-event trigger distribution, are developed based on the RF timing benchmark. The scheme provides high-precision distribution of RF timing signal and general hardware interface, which can simplify the network structure and is expected to be extended to other large-scale physical accelerator facilities.

Abstract:This article describes a design of an field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of a clock and data recovery (CDR) system. The core will be integrated in the FPGA configuration for the front-end electronics (FEE) board of the Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory (JUNO) experiment. The front-end will be placed on the main detector, underground and underwater, making the electronics not accessible after installation. The timing and trigger system relies on a synchronous link connection over CAT5e cable (up to 100 m long) between the front-end and the back-end electronics (BEE), where a twisted-pair is dedicated to clock-forwarding. The robustness of the recovery clock system is essential for the stability of the FPGA firmware. The proposed project is intended to improve the clock recovery operation by increasing the immunity of the link to sudden electromagnetic interference (EMI). On top of this, the core allows to free a twisted-pair in the link, since the clock can be recovered from the data and there is no more need for a clock-dedicated transmission. This will optimize the link granting the possibility to implement other features. The design is based on two components: a numerically-controlled oscillator (NCO), in order to create a controlled frequency clock signal, and a digital phase detector (PD) to match the clock frequency with the data rate. NCOs are often coupled with a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to create direct digital synthesizers (DDSs), which are able to produce analog waveforms of any desired frequency. In the presented case instead, the NCO generates a digital clock signal of an arbitrary frequency, while the PD manages this frequency by intercepting any shifting on the relative phase between the clock and the data. A phase aligner (PA) module guarantees that data are sampled in the middle of the eye pattern, which represents the optimal sampling point. The article presents an overview of the NCO-based CDR design and implementation, together with some tests and results in order to verify the CDR reliability. Moreover, in the last section, some other possible applications of the core are illustrated.

Abstract:$\text{N}\nu $ DEx is an experiment proposed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 82Se using a high-pressure gaseous time projection chamber (TPC). In Phase-I of the experiment, the $\text{N}\nu $ DEx-100 detector is filled with about 100 kg SeF6. The readout and data acquisition (DAQ) systems are crucial components of the experiment. The 2-D pixelated readout plane, consisting of approximately 15 000 sensors for charge measurement, is placed at one end-cap of the chamber. The electrode and charge-sensitive preamplifier in each sensor collect drifted ions and amplify the signal, with the analog output transmitted to a digital ASIC, where an internal analog-to-digital converter (ADC) continuously digitizes the pulse. All digital ASICs on the plane form two routing networks, utilizing four pairs of bidirectional I/Os in each chip. The digitized waveform data from all chips is transmitted toward one edge of the plane via these two networks. Data aggregation modules (DAMs) at the edge aggregate slow parallel data links to fast serial data links, which are then connected to the DAQ system in the back-end. This article aims to introduce the design and testing of the demonstrator system for the full digital readout chain, including a digital chips array, a DAM and the back-end DAQ system.
