Abstract:This paper adopts computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to numerically analyze particle deposition in the ventilation duct. A three-dimensional drift-flux model combined with particle deposition boundary conditions for wall surfaces is presented. The numerical method is used to analyze the particle deposition velocity and deposited particle mass flux in the ventilation duct after validation. Twelve groups of particle size, two average air speeds in ducts are investigated to understand the particle deposition in the straight ventilation duct, which ensures a fully developed turbulent duct flow. And then, the particle accumulation by deposition in the ventilation duct is analyzed according to the cleaning code for air duct system in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of China. The cases with or without air filter installed are studied by assuming that the duct inlet particle concentration is that of outdoor air in Beijing city, China.

Abstract:This paper discusses the effect of ventilation duct as a particle filter by modeling particle deposition in ventilation ducts, which is the reason that ventilation ducts could "filter" particles. An Eulerian model is employed to predict the particle deposition velocity onto the wall and floor from fully developed turbulent flow in ventilation ducts [Zhao B, Wu J. Modeling particle deposition from fully developed turbulent flow in ventilation duct. Atmospheric Environment 2006;40:457-66], while an empirical equation is proposed to predict the particle deposition velocity onto the ceiling combined with experimental data and, another empirical equation by McFarland et al. [Aerosol deposition in bends with turbulent flow. Environmental Science and Technology 1997;31:3371-7] is used for predicting the particle penetration through the bends, which are hard to analyze by theoretical method.Losses through ventilation duct are thus evaluated for the particle size range 0.01-100 mu m. Both straight duct (implies fully developed turbulent flow) and duct bend (implies developing turbulent flow) cases are analyzed. Then particle penetration through the supply duct of a swimming pool, including some straight ducts and bends, is analyzed as an application case. The results show that when particle diameter is larger than 5 pm, the filtration of the duct might not be ignored as the obvious loss by deposition. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Study on the deposition characteristics of fine particles at local components in air conditioning ventilation ducts

Abstract:Air conditioning ventilation ducts are widely used in contemporary buildings. The change of airflow direction in the ducts local components can easily lead to the deposition of particles, which can easily form a secondary source of indoor air pollution and have an adverse effect on human health. Based on this, this paper utilizes the existing experimental data to validate the numerical simulation. The Reynolds stress turbulence model combined with the method of enhanced wall function was used to investigate the deposition characteristics of fine particles in different local components. For the first time, local deposition rates and deposition hotspots were proposed to analyze the simulation results. The results show that the local deposition rate of the particles with a particle size of 1μm do not differ much on each wall surface, and the particles are deposited more uniformly on each wall at the local components, with a difference of less than 10 %, and the maximum local deposition rate is on the outer wall of the local components. When the particle size is larger than 10μm, the local deposition rate on the outer wall of the local component increases significantly, with a maximum increase of 23.3 % (compared to 5μm particles), and the maximum local deposition rate increases slowly with increasing air velocity, with a maximum increase of less than 8 %. The effect of increasing particle size on the maximum local deposition rate is much greater than the increase in air velocity. With the increase of air velocity and particle size, the deposition hotspots of both the 90° bend and the T-type tee duct migrate to the middle of the wall, and the deposition hotspots of the 4-way duct migrate to the inside of the wall.
Particle Deposition in Ventilation Duct with Convex or Concave Wall Cavity

Abstract:A numerical study is carried out on particle deposition in ducts with either convex or concave wall cavity. Results show that, if compared with smooth duct, particle deposition velocities (Vd+) increase greatly in ducts with wall cavities. More specifically, for τ+<1, Vd+ increase by about 2–4 orders of magnitude in the cases with the convex and concave wall cavities; for τ+>1, Vd+ grows relatively slower. Enhancement of particle deposition with wall cavities is caused by the following mechanisms, i.e., interception by the wall cavities, expanded deposition area, and the enhanced flow turbulence. In general, addition of wall cavities is contributive for particle deposition, so it provides an efficient approach to remove particles, especially with small size, e.g., PM2.5. Moreover, the convex wall cavity leads to a larger increment of Vd+ than the concave wall cavity. However, taking pressure loss into account, though Vd+ is relatively lower, duct with the concave wall cavity is more efficient than that with the convex wall cavity.

Abstract:A three-dimensional drift-flux model combined with deposition boundary conditions for the wall surfaces is presented to study particle deposition in a room ventilated either by displacement or mixing. The deposition boundary conditions were developed based on the work by Lai and Nazaroff. The turbulence effects of the indoor airflow were modelled with a zero-equation turbulence model by Chen and Xu. Several particle sizes, 1, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 micron, were investigated. The results showed that the deposited particle mass flux at vertical walls and floor were very different in the two differently ventilated rooms, even though the mean particle deposition velocities and mean deposition rate were almost the same for a certain size of particles. The deposited particle mass in rooms ventilated by mixing was larger than that in the room with displacement ventilation. The calculated mean deposition velocities and mean deposition rate of some sizes of particles agree with the measured data reported in the literature, while the results of small size (1 mum) and large size (10mum) particles have obvious discrepancies.

Abstract:We used simulations and experimental tests to investigate indoor particle deposition during four commonly used ventilation modes, including ceiling supply, side-up supply, side-down supply and bottom supply. We used a condensation monodisperse aerosol generator to generate fine diethylhexyl sebacate (DEHS) particles of different sizes along with two optical particle counters that measured particle concentration at the exhaust opening and inside a three-dimensional ventilated test room. We then simulated particle deposition using the same ventilation modes with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Our simulated results indicate that mean deposition velocity/rate for particles 0.5–10μm (aerodynamic diameter) is not affected by different ventilation modes. However, both our experimental and simulated results indicate that the deposition loss factor, a parameter defined based on mass balance principle to reflect the influence of particle distribution on deposited particle quantity, differ significantly by ventilation mode. This indicates that ventilation plays an important role in determining particle deposition due to the apparent differences in the spatial distribution of particles. The particle loss factor during ventilation modes characterized by upward air flow in the room is smaller than that of mixing ventilation; however this trend was strongly influenced by the relative location of the inlets, outlets and aerosol source.
An experimental approach to measure particle deposition in large circular ventilation ducts

Abstract:The topic of this study is related to airborne particle dynamics in indoor environments. Lab-scale experiments have been performed to investigate particle deposition velocity to six different surfaces orientations (with respect to gravity) for fully developed turbulent flow in horizontal large circular ventilation ducts. Monodispersed aerosol particles (1-6 μm) were used in the deposition experiments. A very low particle mass (40 ng) was measured reliably above background level on duct surfaces by a means of a nondestructive stencil technique associated with fluorescence analysis. For 2-6 μm particles (diffusion and impaction regime), deposition rates to floors were much greater than rates to the ceiling and greater than rates to the wall. For 1-μm particles, the effect of surface orientation to particle deposition was not significant. Results were compared to the very few similar and published studies. This work was conducted in the frame of the CleanAirNet project which aimed at producing new knowledge, models, and techniques to help controlling the safety food stuffs, through a better control of aerosol particle (bioaerosols) transport and deposition in the ventilation networks of the food industry.

Abstract:In this work, effects of particle size, air speed, and time factor on the short-term resuspension of micron and submicron particles in straight ventilation ducts were experimentally studied with a focus on the particles airborne from the inner surface of ventilation ducts. The experimental method was designed to monitor continuously the particle resuspension rate owing to lift-off. The duct systems were made of typical commercial materials. The particles tested were in eleven size groups in the range of 0.4-10 mu m. The experiments were conducted at six air speeds: 3.8, 5.1, 6.3, 7.1, 8.0, and 8.8 m/s and each test lasted for 180 s.The measured particle resuspension rates increased with the increases of the air speed to a certain values, ranging from 9.2 x 10(-11) s(-1) to 3.7 x 10(-9) s(-1) corresponding to the particle size of 0.4-10 mu m, while the measured particle resuspension rate was smaller than previous reported results. The measurements also showed that particle resuspension rates were independent of time during the first 60 s and then decreased sharply. The experiments suggest that more particles slide and roll off rather than being lifted into the air flow and that higher air speed may reduce the amount of particles lifted into air flow as more of the particles may become airborne due to sliding and rolling off. Simulation of Particles Diffusion Characteristics in the Ventilation Duct of the Air Conditioning System

Abstract:PM2.5 and PM10 attach harmful substance easily and they pose a threat to health after being inhaled. Here deposits a large amount of PM2.5 and PM10 in the air conditioning system pipe surface, and they seriously affect the indoor air quality following by air into the room. This article analyzes the diffusion and propagation characteristics of PM2.5 and PM10 in the ventilation duct. The study focus on particles in the viscous sublayer and analyzes its movement. The study shows that the larger the wind speed, the faster particles reaching stable distribution; The velocity change of particles increases sharply, then decreases, remains stable finally; The final velocity (X direction) of particles of different size is same basically in the same duct with the same initial velocity(X direction); PM2.5 and PM10 are generally deposited on the bottom of the pipe within the range of the allowable wind velocity in the air conditioning system. Therefore, the paper concludes that in order to prevent the PM2.5 and PM10's harm to the human, we should clean the ventilation duct regularly.

Abstract:Particle deposition in duct air flow over a forward- or backward-facing step was investigated by Reynolds stress model with velocity fluctuation correction combined with discrete particle model. The mean air velocities in duct with a backward-facing step and particle deposition velocities for smooth duct both agreed well with related literature results. The deposition velocities of the duct with a forward-facing step are significantly higher than those of smooth duct, especially for small particles ( d p < 10 μ m ). Particle deposition velocities in the duct with a backward-facing step are higher for small particles ( d p < 10 μ m ) but lower for large particles ( d p > 10 μ m ), compared with smooth duct case. Air velocity and turbulent kinetic energy fields in the duct with a forward- or backward-facing step are quite different from smooth duct case, which modify the particle deposition characteristics significantly. Furthermore, a particle deposition efficiency ratio was defined and analyzed by considering flow drag of the duct. The results showed that the peak deposition efficiency ratio of the duct with a forward-facing step can reach 60 for particles of 1 μm. The duct with a forward-facing step can enhance deposition of small particles more significantly ( d p < 10 μ m ), compared with the duct with a backward-facing step.

Abstract:In a previous paper, a model was established to account for particles' deposition onto the inner surfaces of small spaces. In that paper, only smooth surfaces were considered. A modification of that model is proposed here in this article to provide a description for non-smooth (rough) surfaces. This is attained by altering the limits of the boundary-layer that are used to do the integrations required to calculate the deposition speeds. To apply the model, deposition of particles onto the inner rough surfaces of a ventilation-duct is considered, as an example. Deposition speeds onto the walls, floor and ceiling of the duct are estimated with comparing them to the experimental-data. By considering different values of the friction velocities, the alterations of the lower-limit in the boundary-layer are mathematically related to the corresponding friction velocities. The proposed model has the advantage of predicting the alteration in the limits of the boundary-layer, once the friction-velocity is provided. This is very important as the friction-velocity is a key parameter used in the descriptions of particles' deposition and penetration.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved Eulerian model to predict particle deposition velocity in fully developed turbulent duct flow. The model is modified based on the three-layer model by Lai and Nazaroff (Journal of Aerosol Science, 31, 463–476, 2000), accounting for turbophoresis as well as Brownian diffusion, turbulent diffusion and gravitational settling. An expression relating the turbophoretic velocity to particle relaxation time, friction velocity and the normal distance to the wall surface is presented to model the turbophoresis. Similar with previous one by Lai and Nazaroff, the model only needs to input friction velocity, which makes it easy to apply. The predicted results agree well with measurement data for floor and vertical walls.

Abstract:Deposition of particles in turbulent duct flows is crucial process in a number of industrial and environmental applications. Therefore, in this paper, particle deposition in a horizontal turbulent duct flow is simulated by CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modeling. Dimensionless deposition velocities of particles ranging from 10 to 200μm are predicted by one-way coupling Lagrangian eddy lifetime model combined with a computation model of particle deposition in the turbulent duct flow with a fully developed velocity profiles based on RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes) equations at all three air speeds of 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0ms−1. It is shown that deposition rates (dimensionless deposition velocities) of particles to floors are higher than that to vertical wall and ceiling surfaces. Floor deposition rates increase with dimensionless relaxing time increasing, ceiling deposition rates decrease to zero with dimensionless relaxing time increasing, and wall deposition rates show the increase first and then a subtle decrease with dimensionless relaxing time increase at different air speeds. Wall and ceiling deposition rates increase with air speed increase at the same dimensionless relaxing time. Floor deposition rates decrease with air speed increase at the same dimensionless relaxing time. The simulation results are expected to be helpful for evaluating particle deposition rates in some environmental and industrial square ducts.

Abstract:The kinematic characteristics and thermophoretic deposition of inhalable particles(PM2.5)suspended in air flow in a vertical rectangular duct with temperature distribution were experimentally studied.Particle dynamics analyzer(PDA)was used for the on-line measurement of particle motion and particle concentration distribution in the cross-sections of the duct.Influence of the parameters such as the ratio of the bulk air temperature to the cold wall temperature in the duct on the kinematic characteristics and the deposition efficiencies of PM2.5 was investigated.Experimental results indicate that the particle concentration distribution in the duct,extremely in the area near the walls,is mainly determined by the turbulent diffusion in the flow,but turbulent diffusion is hard to make particles to deposit on the dust walls.Thermophoresis is the key factor to the particle deposition on the cold duct walls.Based on the experimental results,an empirical correlation for the calculation of thermophoretic deposition efficiency of PM2.5 is developed.The empirical correlation agrees reasonably well with the experimental data.
Modeling particle deposition onto rough walls in ventilation duct

Abstract:An improved Eulerian model is proposed to predict particle deposition velocity onto rough walls in fully developed turbulent duct flow. The model treats the turbulent flow over rough walls as three different regimes of turbulent boundary layer (hydraulically smooth, transition and completely rough) according to the value of roughness Reynolds number (or called dimensionless roughness), k+. For each regime, the velocity and concentration boundary layer has a different thickness compared to that of the separated free shear layer, as flow separation behind the roughness is different, and this results in different shifted distance of virtual origin of velocity boundary layer. Thus a fitted equation is proposed based on measured data to estimate the shifted distance of velocity boundary layer for different values of k+, when calculating particle deposition velocity onto rough walls. Besides, as a successive study of previous one by the authors, the model also accounts for turbophoresis as well as Brownian diffusion, turbulent diffusion and gravitational settling. Turbophoretic velocity is calculated by employing a function of dimensionless normal distances in boundary layer to the duct walls. It only needs the friction velocity as the input. The predicted results agree well with published measured data for rough walls in most cases, and also agree better with measurement in ventilation ducts than those using the existing model.
How Particle Resuspension from Inner Surfaces of Ventilation Ducts Affects Indoor Air Quality-A Modeling Analysis

Abstract:Dust particles deposited on the inner surfaces of the ventilation ducts can be resuspended by passing airflow. A physical-science-based model is developed to understand how particle resuspension affects the indoor air quality. This integrated model takes into consideration particle mass balance models for straight ventilation duct, duct bend, ventilation room, and air filter. The straight duct and room models have been validated using experimental data. With the integrated model, we find that in-duct resuspension of particles could lead to significant increase in exposure to airborne particles for indoor occupants. It is also found that indoor particle exposure is a linear function of dust mass loading. Greater ventilation rate, which means higher air speed above the dust particles, would lead to greater exposure ratio, while fresh air ratio has little influence. Possible control methods are discussed as well.
Experimental Study of Solid Particle Deposition in 90° Ventilated Bends of Rectangular Cross Section with Turbulent Flow

Abstract:Nowadays, ventilation ducts, especially duct bends, play a significant role in filtering aerosol contaminant for the built environment. This article experimentally investigates practical averaged aerosol deposition in 90° ventilated bends of rectangular cross section by measuring particle concentration changes at bend inlet and outlet in steady state. The measured penetrations at Reynolds number Re = 17,900 and 35,600 are in good agreement with previously published data at small Stokes number, which justifies the effectiveness of the measurement process. Particle penetration decreases from approximately 100% for St = 5.2 × 10−4 particles to 64% for St = 0.55 particles in acrylic glass bends. For the particles of Stokes number larger than 0.089, particle penetration is much higher than that in previous studies. This behavior is believed to be caused by the consideration of particle rebounce from bend wall in the presence of centrifugal force. The changes in Reynolds number do not significantly alter the trend of deposition velocity and penetration. Deposition velocities are compared and verified with available droplet data and current numerical and analytical analysis. For the high deposition velocity increase compared to that in straight ducts, the major mechanism is attributed to the flow impaction onto outer bend wall. In this type of bend, secondary flows and streamwise eddies provide a further reason for distinct deposition increase of small particles. In a word, the deposition mechanisms are analyzed analytically and systematically, and then classified in order clearly. In addition, two empirical models were proposed in this article, which are valid for Stokes number St = 5.2 × 10−4–0.55 under the experimental conditions. Abstract:In this paper, several factors influencing particle deposition in indoor environments are analyzed with an analytical model and a three-dimensional drift flux model combined with the particle deposition boundary conditions for wall surfaces. The influences of flow conditions near the wall surfaces, surface roughness and particle concentration distribution on particle deposition indoors are studied. By modeling particle deposition onto surfaces with the analytical model, it is found that larger friction velocity near the wall surfaces and rougher surface may lead to larger particle deposition velocity when the particle size is small, but when particle size is large enough (the range is up to the actual friction velocity and in this study it is about 1–5μm), the influence of the friction velocity and roughness could be neglected. Furthermore, the three-dimensional numerical simulations indicate that particle concentration distribution may be very different even for the same particle source and air change rate, which cause a different deposited particle flux. As the particle concentration distribution may not be uniform in most cases, especially for the ventilated rooms, it is important to incorporate particle concentration distribution when analyzing particle deposition in indoor environments. Some suggestions or rules for particle deposition controlling are also presented based on the analysis.

Abstract:In this paper,a series of numerical simulations were conducted to study the deposition of nano-and micro-particles in ventilation duct using Euler-Lagrangian method.Firstly,the mean flow field and turbulent properties were generated using RNG k-ε turbulence model.In addition,a one-way coupling discrete random walk model was used to predict velocity fluctuations and particle-eddy interaction.Furthermore,according to the problem that RNG k-ε model without near-wall correction would over-predict particle deposition velocity in the diffusion and diffusion-impaction regime,a simple near-wall correction for RNG k-ε model was proposed,also the simulation results with and without the near-wall correction were compared with the available experimental data and empirical equations in the literature.The results indicated that using the near-wall correction proposed in this paper would greatly improve the accuracy of particle deposition velocity in the diffusion and diffusion-impaction regime.

Abstract:Particle dispersion and deposition in man-made enclosed environments are closely related to the well-being of occupants. The present study developed a three-dimensional drift-flux model for particle movements in turbulent indoor airflows, and combined it into Eulerian approaches. To account for the process of particle deposition at solid boundaries, a semi-empirical deposition model was adopted in which the size-dependent deposition characteristics were well resolved. After validation against the experimental data in a scaled isothermal chamber and in a full-scale non-isothermal environmental chamber, the drift-flux model was used to investigate the deposition rates and human exposures to particles from two different sources with three typical ventilation systems: mixing ventilation (MV), displacement ventilation (DV), and under-floor air distribution (UFAD). For particles originating from the supply air, a V-shaped curve of the deposition velocity variation as a function of particle size was observed. The minimum deposition appeared at 0.1–0.5μm. For supermicron particles, the ventilation type and air exchange rate had an ignorable effect on the deposition rate. The movements of submicron particles were like tracer gases while the gravitational settling effect should be taken into account for particles larger than 2.5μm. The temporal increment of human exposure to a step-up particle release in the supply air was determined, among many factors, by the distance between the occupant and air outlet. The larger the particle size, the lower the human exposure. For particles released from an internal heat source, the concentration stratification of small particles (diameter <10μm) in the vertical direction appeared with DV and UFAD, and it was found the advantageous principle for gaseous pollutants that a relatively less-polluted occupied zone existed in DV and UFAD was also applicable to small particles.
