Abstract:Because aerosol particle deposition is an important factor in indoor air quality, many empirical and theoretical studies have attempted to understand the process. In this study, we estimated the deposition rate of aerosol particles on smooth aluminum surfaces inside a test chamber. We investigated the influence of turbulent intensity due to ventilation and fan operation. We also investigated two important processes in particle deposition: turbophoresis, which is significant for micron particles, and coagulation, which is relevant to ultrafine particles (UFP diameter <0.1μm) at high particle concentrations. Our analysis included semi-empirical estimates of the deposition rates that were compared to available deposition models and verified with simulations of an aerosol dynamics model. In agreement with previous studies, this study found that induced turbulent intensity greatly enhanced deposition rates of fine particles (FP diameter <1μm). The deposition rate of FP was proportional to the ventilation rate, and it increased monotonically with fan speed. With our setup, turbophoresis was very important for coarse particles larger than 5μm. The coagulation of aerosol particles was insignificant when the particle concentration was less than 104cm−3 during fan operation. The model simulation results verified that the aerosol dynamics module incorporated in our Multi-Compartment and Size-Resolved Indoor Aerosol Model (MC-SIAM) was valid. The behavior of aerosol particles inside our chamber was similar to that found in real-life conditions with the same ventilation rates (0.018–0.39h−1) and similar air mixing modes. Therefore, our findings provide insight into indoor particle behavior.

Abstract:In a previous paper, a model was established to account for particles' deposition onto the inner surfaces of small spaces. In that paper, only smooth surfaces were considered. A modification of that model is proposed here in this article to provide a description for non-smooth (rough) surfaces. This is attained by altering the limits of the boundary-layer that are used to do the integrations required to calculate the deposition speeds. To apply the model, deposition of particles onto the inner rough surfaces of a ventilation-duct is considered, as an example. Deposition speeds onto the walls, floor and ceiling of the duct are estimated with comparing them to the experimental-data. By considering different values of the friction velocities, the alterations of the lower-limit in the boundary-layer are mathematically related to the corresponding friction velocities. The proposed model has the advantage of predicting the alteration in the limits of the boundary-layer, once the friction-velocity is provided. This is very important as the friction-velocity is a key parameter used in the descriptions of particles' deposition and penetration.

Abstract:In this work, effects of particle size, air speed, and time factor on the short-term resuspension of micron and submicron particles in straight ventilation ducts were experimentally studied with a focus on the particles airborne from the inner surface of ventilation ducts. The experimental method was designed to monitor continuously the particle resuspension rate owing to lift-off. The duct systems were made of typical commercial materials. The particles tested were in eleven size groups in the range of 0.4-10 mu m. The experiments were conducted at six air speeds: 3.8, 5.1, 6.3, 7.1, 8.0, and 8.8 m/s and each test lasted for 180 s.The measured particle resuspension rates increased with the increases of the air speed to a certain values, ranging from 9.2 x 10(-11) s(-1) to 3.7 x 10(-9) s(-1) corresponding to the particle size of 0.4-10 mu m, while the measured particle resuspension rate was smaller than previous reported results. The measurements also showed that particle resuspension rates were independent of time during the first 60 s and then decreased sharply. The experiments suggest that more particles slide and roll off rather than being lifted into the air flow and that higher air speed may reduce the amount of particles lifted into air flow as more of the particles may become airborne due to sliding and rolling off. Abstract:A three-dimensional drift-flux model combined with deposition boundary conditions for the wall surfaces is presented to study particle deposition in a room ventilated either by displacement or mixing. The deposition boundary conditions were developed based on the work by Lai and Nazaroff. The turbulence effects of the indoor airflow were modelled with a zero-equation turbulence model by Chen and Xu. Several particle sizes, 1, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 micron, were investigated. The results showed that the deposited particle mass flux at vertical walls and floor were very different in the two differently ventilated rooms, even though the mean particle deposition velocities and mean deposition rate were almost the same for a certain size of particles. The deposited particle mass in rooms ventilated by mixing was larger than that in the room with displacement ventilation. The calculated mean deposition velocities and mean deposition rate of some sizes of particles agree with the measured data reported in the literature, while the results of small size (1 mum) and large size (10mum) particles have obvious discrepancies.

Abstract:We used simulations and experimental tests to investigate indoor particle deposition during four commonly used ventilation modes, including ceiling supply, side-up supply, side-down supply and bottom supply. We used a condensation monodisperse aerosol generator to generate fine diethylhexyl sebacate (DEHS) particles of different sizes along with two optical particle counters that measured particle concentration at the exhaust opening and inside a three-dimensional ventilated test room. We then simulated particle deposition using the same ventilation modes with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Our simulated results indicate that mean deposition velocity/rate for particles 0.5–10μm (aerodynamic diameter) is not affected by different ventilation modes. However, both our experimental and simulated results indicate that the deposition loss factor, a parameter defined based on mass balance principle to reflect the influence of particle distribution on deposited particle quantity, differ significantly by ventilation mode. This indicates that ventilation plays an important role in determining particle deposition due to the apparent differences in the spatial distribution of particles. The particle loss factor during ventilation modes characterized by upward air flow in the room is smaller than that of mixing ventilation; however this trend was strongly influenced by the relative location of the inlets, outlets and aerosol source.

Abstract:Deposition of particles in turbulent duct flows is crucial process in a number of industrial and environmental applications. Therefore, in this paper, particle deposition in a horizontal turbulent duct flow is simulated by CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modeling. Dimensionless deposition velocities of particles ranging from 10 to 200μm are predicted by one-way coupling Lagrangian eddy lifetime model combined with a computation model of particle deposition in the turbulent duct flow with a fully developed velocity profiles based on RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes) equations at all three air speeds of 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0ms−1. It is shown that deposition rates (dimensionless deposition velocities) of particles to floors are higher than that to vertical wall and ceiling surfaces. Floor deposition rates increase with dimensionless relaxing time increasing, ceiling deposition rates decrease to zero with dimensionless relaxing time increasing, and wall deposition rates show the increase first and then a subtle decrease with dimensionless relaxing time increase at different air speeds. Wall and ceiling deposition rates increase with air speed increase at the same dimensionless relaxing time. Floor deposition rates decrease with air speed increase at the same dimensionless relaxing time. The simulation results are expected to be helpful for evaluating particle deposition rates in some environmental and industrial square ducts.

Abstract:This paper adopts computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to numerically analyze particle deposition in the ventilation duct. A three-dimensional drift-flux model combined with particle deposition boundary conditions for wall surfaces is presented. The numerical method is used to analyze the particle deposition velocity and deposited particle mass flux in the ventilation duct after validation. Twelve groups of particle size, two average air speeds in ducts are investigated to understand the particle deposition in the straight ventilation duct, which ensures a fully developed turbulent duct flow. And then, the particle accumulation by deposition in the ventilation duct is analyzed according to the cleaning code for air duct system in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of China. The cases with or without air filter installed are studied by assuming that the duct inlet particle concentration is that of outdoor air in Beijing city, China.

Abstract:Nowadays, ventilation ducts, especially duct bends, play a significant role in filtering aerosol contaminant for the built environment. This article experimentally investigates practical averaged aerosol deposition in 90° ventilated bends of rectangular cross section by measuring particle concentration changes at bend inlet and outlet in steady state. The measured penetrations at Reynolds number Re = 17,900 and 35,600 are in good agreement with previously published data at small Stokes number, which justifies the effectiveness of the measurement process. Particle penetration decreases from approximately 100% for St = 5.2 × 10−4 particles to 64% for St = 0.55 particles in acrylic glass bends. For the particles of Stokes number larger than 0.089, particle penetration is much higher than that in previous studies. This behavior is believed to be caused by the consideration of particle rebounce from bend wall in the presence of centrifugal force. The changes in Reynolds number do not significantly alter the trend of deposition velocity and penetration. Deposition velocities are compared and verified with available droplet data and current numerical and analytical analysis. For the high deposition velocity increase compared to that in straight ducts, the major mechanism is attributed to the flow impaction onto outer bend wall. In this type of bend, secondary flows and streamwise eddies provide a further reason for distinct deposition increase of small particles. In a word, the deposition mechanisms are analyzed analytically and systematically, and then classified in order clearly. In addition, two empirical models were proposed in this article, which are valid for Stokes number St = 5.2 × 10−4–0.55 under the experimental conditions. Experimental Study of Bio-Aerosol Particle Concentration Decay in a Scaled Chamber under Mixed Ventilation

Abstract:The paper is to introduce the research results of its experimental study on the relation between the bio-aerosol particle deposition rates and air change rate per hour(ACH)in a scaled chamber under mixed ventilation(MV)strategy.The particles were classified into four groups by size:0.3-0.5 μm,0.5-1 μm,1-2 μm and 2-5 μm.The ACH used in this study were 6.51 h~(-1),7.81 h~(-1), 9.11 h~(-1),10.42 h~(-1),11.72 h~(-1)and 13.02 h~(-1),all of which were among the typical range in real MV applications.In proceeding with our experiments,we adopted a QRJ-1 aerosol generator with Laskin atomizer to introduce particles into the chamber.In addition,we have used a laser particle counter(BCJ-1D)to measure the particle concentration at a predetermined point inside the chamber.It was found that the particle concentration decay follows a natural logarithm relation with time for all the ACH studied in this paper.At a certain ACH,particle deposition rates tend to increase with the increase of the particle diameter,and particles in our study were among the accumulation and coarse mode.For a certain particle size,the increasing ACH can naturally cause the augment of the particle deposition rate because it would enhance the intensity of turbulence near the walls.Thus,the increase of ACH has a stronger impact on the particle deposition rate in the condition with an ACH lower than 9.11 h~(-1) than higher than 9.11 h~(-1).The particle deposition rates would increase faster than ACH if it is lower than ACH 9.11 h~(-1).Crowing rates of particle deposition rates and ACH tend to be the same when ACH was above 9.11 h~(-1).In this situation,the ratios of particle would lose due to the ventilation for different particle sizes become stable.Thus,it can be seen that this paper is a worthy contribution to the deeper understanding of the particle decay behaviors in a real mixed ventilated laboratory rooms.

Abstract:The kinematic characteristics and thermophoretic deposition of inhalable particles(PM2.5)suspended in air flow in a vertical rectangular duct with temperature distribution were experimentally studied.Particle dynamics analyzer(PDA)was used for the on-line measurement of particle motion and particle concentration distribution in the cross-sections of the duct.Influence of the parameters such as the ratio of the bulk air temperature to the cold wall temperature in the duct on the kinematic characteristics and the deposition efficiencies of PM2.5 was investigated.Experimental results indicate that the particle concentration distribution in the duct,extremely in the area near the walls,is mainly determined by the turbulent diffusion in the flow,but turbulent diffusion is hard to make particles to deposit on the dust walls.Thermophoresis is the key factor to the particle deposition on the cold duct walls.Based on the experimental results,an empirical correlation for the calculation of thermophoretic deposition efficiency of PM2.5 is developed.The empirical correlation agrees reasonably well with the experimental data.

Abstract:This paper discusses the effect of ventilation duct as a particle filter by modeling particle deposition in ventilation ducts, which is the reason that ventilation ducts could "filter" particles. An Eulerian model is employed to predict the particle deposition velocity onto the wall and floor from fully developed turbulent flow in ventilation ducts [Zhao B, Wu J. Modeling particle deposition from fully developed turbulent flow in ventilation duct. Atmospheric Environment 2006;40:457-66], while an empirical equation is proposed to predict the particle deposition velocity onto the ceiling combined with experimental data and, another empirical equation by McFarland et al. [Aerosol deposition in bends with turbulent flow. Environmental Science and Technology 1997;31:3371-7] is used for predicting the particle penetration through the bends, which are hard to analyze by theoretical method.Losses through ventilation duct are thus evaluated for the particle size range 0.01-100 mu m. Both straight duct (implies fully developed turbulent flow) and duct bend (implies developing turbulent flow) cases are analyzed. Then particle penetration through the supply duct of a swimming pool, including some straight ducts and bends, is analyzed as an application case. The results show that when particle diameter is larger than 5 pm, the filtration of the duct might not be ignored as the obvious loss by deposition. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Modeled aerosol dry deposition velocities to natural surfaces have not been verified against experimental data because data is not available. However due to recent instrumentation developments measuring vertical number fluxes of aerosols with sizes down to 10nm became possible. Additional instrument modifications which are discussed here allows measuring size dependent fluxes of 10–100nm aerosols and would fulfill the data gap. This study analyzes uncertainties in such measurements. Low particle count is identified as a major contributor to the measurement uncertainty, limiting the accurate estimation of size-resolved dry deposition velocities in remote environment to particles with diameters less than 50 nm using current instrumentation. Even in this size range high concentrations are required. In the case of two particle counters with different detection limits dry deposition velocity estimates can be also systematically biased, depending on the aerosol size distribution. A difference in detection limits of counters about 10nm is narrow enough to avoid bias in size-dependent dry deposition velocities in most circumstances.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the influence of surface deposition and coagulation on indoor particles larger than 0.25 mu m by conducting tests in a room-sized enclosed chamber under different air temperatures. The particles, processed dust intercepted by indoor air conditioners, were generated using an aerosol generator. The deposition rate and coagulation coefficients were used to estimate the efficiency of indoor particle surface deposition and coagulation in this study. The results show that the deposition rates increase as the air temperature rises, and high temperatures can also increase the coagulation coefficient. In addition, test results show that the enhancement of indoor air mixing intensity can increase both the deposition rates and the coagulation efficiencies. The contribution of coagulation to the total decay of indoor particle concentrations decreases over time, and the contribution is higher for particles in the range of 0.25-0.5 mu m than those in the range of 0.5-1.0 mu m.

Abstract:UNLABELLEDAs people spend most of their time in an indoor environment, it is important to predict indoor pollutant level in order to assess health risks. As particles are an important pollutant indoors, it is of great interest to study the airflow pattern and particle dispersion in buildings. This study uses large eddy simulation (LES) to predict three-dimensional and transient turbulent flows and a Lagrangian model to compute particle trajectories in a room. The motion of three different types of solid particles in a decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulent airflow is calculated. By comparing the computed results with the experimental data from the literature, the computational method used in this investigation is found to be successful in predicting the airflow and particle trajectories in terms of the second-order statistics, such as the mean-square displacement and turbulent intensity. This Lagrangian model is then applied to the study of particles' dispersion in a ventilated cavity with a simplified geometry for two ventilation scenarios. It is shown that light particles follow the airflow in the room and many particles are exhausted, while heavier particles deposit to the floor or/and are exhausted.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONSThe results of this paper can be used to study dispersion of infectious diseases in enclosed spaces in which virus or bacteria are often attached to particles and transported to different rooms in a building through ventilation systems. In most of studies, the virus or bacteria have been considered to be gaseous phase so there is no slip between virus/bacteria and air. The results in this paper show that heavier particles are submitted to gravity and are sensitive to the ventilation strategy.

Abstract:The transport and distribution of aerosol particles from outdoor environment to indoor environment were experimentally studied.A scaled two-dimensional experimental setup was built to simulate the indoor and outdoor environment,the time-dependent concentration of the particles from outdoor with a diameter distribution of 0.3-10.0 μm was measured inside the chamber to illustrate the influence of the particle diameter on the distribution and dispersion of the particles.The results show that the difference of the particle concentration is observed for different ventilation situations,because the flow field configuration effectively influences the particle dispersion at certain position in indoor environment.The particle diameter also influences the concentration distribution and the dispersion of the particles.The larger the particles,the lower the dispersion efficiency is.When the inflow air velocity is high,the difference of the particle concentration distribution among the particles with different diameters is very little.When there is no inflow gas at the inlets,the difference reaches the highest level.

Abstract:It is currently admitted that for each filtration process using pleated filters, at least three steps can be distinguished: depth and surface filtration, which are common to flat filters, and surface reduction. This step is caused by inefficient filling of the pleat due to the filter geometry. For combustion aerosol, it has been proved that this third step strongly depends on the filtration velocity resulting in an increase of the resistance when air flow decreases. This observation leads one to think that Brownian diffusion, higher for low velocities, could influence the clogging dynamic of a pleated filter. In this article, a protocol derived from the dust cake preparation method published by Schmidt is developed. The aim of this study is to measure the aerosol penetration inside a filter media as well as in a pleat using a scanning electronic microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elementary detection. This method has also been extended to the study of pleated filters to measure the particle distribution inside the pleat. Filters were loaded with nanoparticles in order to evaluate the specificity of the diffusional regime on the clogging of pleated HEPA filters. Abstract:In this paper, several factors influencing particle deposition in indoor environments are analyzed with an analytical model and a three-dimensional drift flux model combined with the particle deposition boundary conditions for wall surfaces. The influences of flow conditions near the wall surfaces, surface roughness and particle concentration distribution on particle deposition indoors are studied. By modeling particle deposition onto surfaces with the analytical model, it is found that larger friction velocity near the wall surfaces and rougher surface may lead to larger particle deposition velocity when the particle size is small, but when particle size is large enough (the range is up to the actual friction velocity and in this study it is about 1–5μm), the influence of the friction velocity and roughness could be neglected. Furthermore, the three-dimensional numerical simulations indicate that particle concentration distribution may be very different even for the same particle source and air change rate, which cause a different deposited particle flux. As the particle concentration distribution may not be uniform in most cases, especially for the ventilated rooms, it is important to incorporate particle concentration distribution when analyzing particle deposition in indoor environments. Some suggestions or rules for particle deposition controlling are also presented based on the analysis.

Abstract:The kinematical characteristics and thermophoretic deposition of inhalable particles with the diameters of 0-2.5$μm (hereafter referred to as PM2.5) suspended in turbulent air flow in a rectangular duct with temperature distribution were experimentally studied. Particle dynamics analyzer (PDA) was used for the on-line measurement of particle motion and particle concentration distribution in the cross-sections of the duct. The influences of the parameters such as the ratio of the bulk air temperature to the cold wall temperature and the air flow rate in the duct on the kinematical characteristics and the deposition efficiencies of PM2.5 were investigated. The experimental results show that the deposition efficiencies of PM2.5 mainly depend on the temperature difference between the air and the cold wall, while the air flow rate and the particle concentration almost affect hardly the deposition efficiency. The radial force thermophoresis to push PM2.5 to the cold wall is found the key factor for PM2.5 deposition. Based on the experimental results, an empirical modified Romay correlation for the calculation of thermophoretic deposition efficiency of PM2.5 is presented. The empirical correlation agrees reasonably well with the experimental data.

Abstract:The deposition of micron particles finds importance in meteorology and several engineering applications such as deposition of dust in gas lines, carbon deposition in engine exhaust, designing effective air-cleaning systems and estimating deposition of inhaled drug or atmospheric pollutants to determine its consequences on human health. Although the existing literature on deposition in straight tubes is quite mature, an experimental study on deposition in micro capillaries with a wide ranges of Re that models particle dynamics in lungs, is missing. The deposition of atmospheric pollutants and nebulized drugs in the lung depends on various biological factors such as flow properties, lung morphology, breathing patterns, particle properties, deposition mechanism, etc. To complicate matters, each breath manifests flows spanning a wide range of Reynolds numbers in various regions of the lung. In this study, the deposition of nebulized aerosol was experimentally investigated in phantom bronchioles of diameters relevant to the 7th to the 23rd branching generations and over the entire range of Re manifest during one breathing cycle. The aerosol fluid was loaded with boron doped carbon quantum dots as a fluorophore. An aerosol was generated of this mixture fluid using an ultrasonic nebulizer, producing droplets of 6.5$\mu$m as the mean diameter. The amount of aerosol deposited on the bronchiole walls was measured using a spectrofluorometer. Finally, a universal bronchiole scale deposition model is proposed which can form the building block for lung-scale aerosol deposition prediction.
