Abstract:The fast and accurate detection of the single-phase-to-ground fault is of great significance for the reliability and safety of the power supply. In this paper, novel algorithms for distribution network protection were proposed with distributed parameters analysis in non-direct grounded systems. At first, novel generating mechanisms of zero-sequence voltage and residual current were proposed. Then the compositions of residue parameters, including residual current and residual admittances, were decomposed in detail. After that, an improved algorithm for a fault resistance calculation of a single phase-to-earth fault was also proposed, and the algorithm is much more convenient as it only needs to measure the variation of the zero-sequence voltage and does not need the prerequisites of the faulty feeder selection. Furthermore, the fault feeder can also be selected by an improved calculation algorithm of zero-sequence admittance of the faulty feeder, which cannot be affected by the asymmetry of the network. Theoretical analysis and the MATALB/Simulink simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:This paper analyses characteristics of single-phase ground fault and presents a fault line selecting method based on wavelet transform. Base on Sampling frequency, it selects the special frequency band, the singularity detection with wavelet is employed to obtain the polarities and magnitudes of the abrupt of current, and through comparing the polarities and magnitudes the fault circuit can be determined. So the detection technique is correct, feasible, it is proved by a great deal of simulating tests.

Abstract:This paper presents a new principle to detect the ground fault in the neutral point indirectly grounded power system.An energy function consisted by post fault Zero Sequence voltage and current is come up. Thus,according the direction and magnitude of the energy function,the fault line can be detected.The principle is not influenced by load harmonics and the transient process.EMTP simulation results confirmed that the conclusions of this paper is right.The application of the new principle is also discussed in the digital fault line detection scheme.

Abstract:Problem of neutral-point voltage unbalance is a key issue for 3-phase 4-wire 3-level NPC inverter. This paper analyzes the relationship between the neutral point voltage and the neutral point current. Neutral-point voltage problem is transformed into neutral-point current problem. Then value of neutral-point current under balanced and unbalanced load condition is calculated. According to the mathematical analysis, a neutral point voltage control strategy is investigated. The simulation and experimental results verify control method.

Abstract:Various grounded neutrals may greatly affect the fault tripping rate of power distribution lines.The paper analyses the difference on tripping rate under the same fault conditions according to the following grounding neutrals including ungrounded,grounded through anti-arc coil,grounded through small resistance and grounding through variable reactance.It also compares them by calculation with interval analysis based on relative superiority.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method for line fault analysis of ungrounded distribution systems. The fault condition of a line fault is integrated into the nodal admittance matrix of the faulted line to be modeled. The zero-impedance branch is merged into adjacent impedance branches to be taken into account, and one of its terminal buses with zero neutral-to-ground voltage is chosen as a slave bus when it is an ideal transformer or a voltage regulator with ungrounded winding connection. The three-phase jointly regulation of a distributed generation source is embedded into nodal admittance model of its internal impedance branch by combining three phases of its internal bus into one equivalent phase. The distribution system is partitioned into a main network and a set of lateral networks to be solved. The main network is formed by the connected paths between the terminal buses of the faulted line, and generation sources, and solved by a Gauss-Seidel method. A lateral network is formed by one of the buses of main network and all buses and branches downstream to the bus, and solved by a backward and forward sweep method. The numerical examples are provided to prove the effectiveness of proposed method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method for determining the location of single-phase-to-ground faults of ungrounded distribution systems based on residual voltage distribution. The possible faulted line segment and fault location are determined by comparing the phase angles of faulted phase voltages against a faulted phase reference angle, and the faulted phase voltages are determined as the difference between the fault caused residual voltage of all phases and the shunt caused residual voltage of un-faulted phases. The method determines the fault location solely based on the voltages and currents measured during the fault, and associated series impedance and shunt impedances of line segments. It does not require any measurements or information for the load demands and prefault conditions. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A new single phase earth fault detection technique based on wavelet packet analysis is introduced in this article: The zero sequence power components are formed of the wavelet packets coefficients of the zero sequence voltage and currents, and are used to be the signs of fault detection, the fault detection is accomplished with comparing the phases of the power components. A small Petersen coil grounded system is simulated in the article, analyzing and computing the simulation results, the rightness and availability is proved.

Abstract:The neutral point effectively grounding mode with small resistor can suppress transient over-voltage and solve faulty line selection problems during single phase earth faults in distribution system so that it has been increasingly applied in urban distribution systems and large mining industry grids.High impedance grounding faults(HIGFs)which exhibit too low fault currents to be identified by over-current protection,however,often occur in effectively grounding distribution systems.HIGF characteristics have been studied in detail and a Mayr function based arc model is introduced to simulate HIGFs,with its accuracy being testified by field data.As for existing method which uses frequency domain characteristics to detect HIGF has low success rate,a HIGF detection method is developed based on zero-sequence current distortion with convex and concave characteristics.Simulation and recorded field data have verified higher sensitivity and reliability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Analysis of fault generated traveling waves is the base to implement traveling waves based protection and fault location. However, the structure at fault point is not asymmetrical under single-phase to ground fault condition in multi-phase power system, so that traveling waves analysis method of single circuit can not be applied. The paper at first analyzes initial traveling wave at fault point generated by the fault through resistance, according to superimposed theory and using phase-to-module transformation method, then considers the fault generated traveling waves' characteristics at the relay point. At last, EMTP is implemented to verify the correctness of analysis of single-phase-to-ground fault generated initial traveling waves

Abstract:Generally, ships use a three-phase power system with low-voltage and ungrounded systems to ensure continuous power supply. In these shipboard power systems, ground faults constitute approximately 95% of all faults. Most ground faults are caused by the single line-to-ground fault. Ground faults can cause blackouts, which significantly impact the safe operation of ships. Therefore, ship engineers should identify the ground-fault region for effective management and resolution. This study analyzes the variations in the phase-to-ground voltage and neutral-point voltage during a ground fault in a distribution network of an ungrounded low-voltage ship. We proposed a practical method for ship engineers to determine the ground-fault phase by measuring only the phase-to-ground voltages. To verify the applicability of the practical method to real ships, the line-to-ground capacitance was directly measured for a 225 V power system of a training ship. Moreover, we performed simulations based on the measurement data and analyzed the variation characteristics of the phase-to-ground voltage and neutral-point voltage during a single line-to-ground fault. Thus, ship engineers can use the simulation results and proposed table to accurately determine ground faults by measuring only the phase-to-ground voltages.

Abstract:This paper presents a fault diagnosis method for neutral grounding three-phase bridge type solid-state fault current limiter(SSFCL).Simulation studies show that based on monitoring and analysis of current of DC reactor and two free-wheeling diodes for the bridge,different type faults of bridge-arm breaking and through can be effectively distinguished so as to implement diagnosis of bridge fault type.With current waveforms of the DC reactor and two free-wheeling diodes and their Fourier analysis,the DC,fundamental and second harmonic components can be calculated to locate fault bridge-arm.This method has many advantages,such as small monitoring amount,obviousness of fault characteristic,the simple criterion,etc.It is conducive to realize on-line monitoring and fault diagnosis for arms of rectifier bridge of SSFCL.

Abstract:As a typical topology of power conversion system (PCS), three-phase three-level T-type inverter (3LT2I) may have the problem of neutral-point (NP) voltage unbalance under nonunity power factor (PF), of which the mechanism is analyzed in this paper. Based on the analysis, an NP voltage balancing method is proposed. It adjusts modulation wave according to the direction of both the modulation wave and the inductor current. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified by experimental results.

Abstract:The neutral grounding method is one of the crucial technologies used to ensure the safe and stable operation of distribution networks. With the development of power electronics-based devices, the application of highly controllable inverters to grounding systems has become a new research direction. In this review paper, based on the summary and analysis for the research status, the flexible grounding system is systematically classified according to its control strategy and structure. And then, the following core technologies are summarized: faulted line selection, current component detection, high-resistance ground identification, ground parameter measurement, neutral point voltage control, and fault location. Subsequently, deficiencies of flexible grounding systems are summarized from the following four perspectives: reliability, accuracy, speed, and stability. Finally, some discussions and recommendations for future development and research direction are presented. Especially, the reliability-enhanced hybrid grounding system that combines active inverters and low resistance for high-resistance ground faults is recommended. This paper provides a systematic literature review of the crucial technologies for flexible grounding systems and can be used as a technical reference for future research.

Abstract:The neutral grounding modes of distribution network in some main countries are discussed and the trends of neutral grounding in 20 kV distribution network in recent years are summarized.Then the main technical characteristics and the suitable scope of three neutral grounding modes are analyzed.The scope of capacitance currents in neutral point through arc suppression coil and through low resistance are studied in this paper.Finally,detailed recommendations of the neutral grounding in 20 kV distribution network are put forward through a real lightning situation in Zhejiang Province.

Abstract:The accuracy of the distribution network fault location is important to guarantee the safety and reliability of the power system. There are many achievements in the research of fault location technology for the distribution network, but it is still difficult to locate fault of neutral point via arc suppression coil grounding system accurately in the application of single-phase to ground fault line selection or detection, because of the problems of a lack of fault selection components, inaccurate line parameters and expensive phase angle information collection devices. This paper proposes a fault location method of single-phase to ground fault based on least-squares parameter estimation. Taking the zero-sequence equivalent circuit model of single-phase ground fault as the basis, regarding the fault distance, fault resistance and inaccurate line parameters as the unknow parameters, and treating the time domain relationship between the fault zero-sequence voltage and current reflected through the zero-sequence equivalent circuit as fault location equation, the optimum solution of the distance from the fault point to the busbar can be calculated with the least-square parameter estimation method. In addition, the method takes the unknown nature of the parameters into account, and only need to measure the fault three-phase voltage and three-phase current data for determining the fault location without phase angle information. The validity of the method was verified by simulation experiments.

Abstract:Because of some components included the distribution network configuration are asymmetrical, it's hard to analyze the asymmetrical faults in a symmetrical system by the symmetrical component method. The electrical characteristics of the asymmetrical components in power systems can be exactly described by the models based on the co-ordinate phase. The co-ordination phase models are applied to represent the asymmetry of parameters and framework in distribution network in this paper. A lot of simulating study and theory analysis are realized by using NETOMAC which is a powerful simulating software applied in power systems. Some interesting conclusions are made for the quantitative analysis of distribution system faults.

Abstract:The traditional algorithm based on active component of zero-sequence current fails to select the fault line frequently.The paper analyzes the causes to the fail of the fault line selection through theoretical analysis,and combines the control of arc-suppression and the fault line selection of single-phase-to-ground fault in resonant grounded systems by optimizing the switching of the damping resistor.The simulation results show that the improved algorithm is more accurate on fault line selection.The hardware and software design of the device of arc-suppression and fault line selection is introduced.
