Abstract:We have used a rapid annealing technique to develop high Tc superconducting phase from sputter-deposited Y-Ba-Cu-Oxide films on sintered alumina substrates. By this technique it is possible to minimize the effects of substrate-film reaction and obtain a single phase material.

Abstract:A plasma assisted MOCVD technique was developed to prepare Y-Ba-Cu-O superconducting thin films at low temperature, typically below 400°C. The preliminary result showed that the asdeposited or in situ plasma annealed films on a number of substrates exhibited orthorhombic structure, and of approximate YBa2Cu3O7-x composition under proper operating conditions. A resistance drop of 90% at 77 K with the onset above 110 K was obtained in a film deposited on glass substrate. The deposition behaviour and the influence of deposition parameters on the deposites were also examined.

Abstract:A Chemical spray deposition process with mixed nitrate solution as source was developed to prepare thin films of Ba-Y-Cu oxide on sapphire substrate. By adjusting the source composition and deposition conditions, we have successfully obtained the films in thickness of 2–15μm with essentially orthorhombic Ba 2 YCu 3 O 7 phase. The films behave super conducting transition with onset above 90K and zero resistance at 68.4K to date. It is believed that the tails in the resistance transition can be improved by searching proper heat treatment and using suitable substrates such as ZrO 2 and SrTiO 3 .

Abstract:Superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-0 film can be prepared by a liquid phase growth method without crucible on 96 % and 99 % alumina substrates. A buffer layer of sputtered gold or platinum was necessary for the formation of Yba2Cu3Ox phase. The flux of Ba2Cu3O10. was appropriate for this purpose. For a film of 10 mm x 20 mm x 10 micron, 0.6 to 0.8 gm initial weight was optimal, the optimum melting temperature was 1090 to 1110 °C for 20 - 30 minutes. In order to obtain films with superconducting transition, an additional Y2BaCuO5-underlayer was necessary. The resultant optimal films had Tc-onset of above 80 % and Tc -zero of typically around 60 K.

Abstract:Superconducting (Bi, Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films with Tc above 100 K were reproducibly obtainable by single-target RF magnetron sputtering and post annealing on a magnesia (100) substrate. Several targets were tried; the Bi20Pb3Sr16Ca25Cu36Ox was found to be optimum. The effect of three different annealings on the evolution of phases, microstructure and Tcs of the films was explored. Annealing with film facing down on top of a Bi19.5Pb3.5Sr22Ca22Cu33Ox bulk at 845 degrees C resulted in the best results. Optimum process parameters are presented.

Abstract:The YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films have been prepared on LaAlO3(001) single crystal substrates by metalorganic deposition method using trifluoroacetate as precursor. The processing conditions including pyrolysis and anneal stage were investigated. A rapid pyrolysis schedule has been developed and discussed. The effects of annealing temperature on microstructure, texture and superconducting properties of the YBCO films were also studied. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the YBCO films on (001) LaAlO3 single crystal substrates have good bi-axial texture. The ac susceptibility and resistivity measurement showed sharp superconducting transition. The critical current density (Jc) of the films deposited on LaAlO3(001) single crystal substrate was over 1×106 A/cm2 at 77 K and 0 T.

Abstract:Metal-organic deposition with low fluorine content precursor solution (LF-MOD) can be used for large-scale fabrication of YBCO coated conductor with advantage of reducing the long fabrication period compared to traditional TFA-MOD. In this paper 5-layer YBCO films were prepared with thickness over 2.5μm by LF-MOD. And then the effect of high-temperature annealing time of 2h, 4h, 6h, respectively on the morphology and texture of YBCO films were systematically investigated. The results show that film of 6h annealing performs best.

Abstract:Using facing targets and off-axis direct-current magnetron sputtering, we have prepared high quality YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) superconducting thin films on ZrO2 (100) with T(c) less-than-or-equal-to 90 K (R = 0) and J(c) as high as 1.6 X 10(6) A/cm2 (78 K, zero magnetic field) over an area of 70 mm diameter. Over this large area, the fluctuations of T(c) and film thickness are from less than +0.9% to -1.3% and from +6.3% to -10%, respectively. In this article, also discussed are the differences between two sputtering modes used in our experiments, one of which gives larger area of superconducting thin film, higher deposition rate, and better thickness uniformity than the other. It is found that the smoothness and the temperature uniformity of the substrate holder are a of extreme importance for the fabrication of large area superconducting thin films. An electroquartz with little deformation during deposition has turned out to be very successful as the substrate holder in our fabrication.

Abstract:High quality superconducting thin films of YBaCuO and Bi(Pb)SrCaCuO were reproducibly prepared by ion beam sputtering and rf magnetron sputtering from a single bulk target or a single off-stoichiometry powder target. The substrates with (100) surfaces of YSZ, SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and MgO were used. We review our work on the synthesis of these thin films obtained by both in situ deposition and postannealing method. The details of thin film growth, superconducting properties, morphology, film-substrate interdiffusions, structures and crystallinities were presented and discussed.

Abstract:(Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+y is a nontoxic cuprate system with a superconducting transition temperature (T-c) of about 117 K for bulk samples. Recently, it is found that the bulk samples of this material synthesized under high pressure hold the highest irreversibility line among all the superconductors, which is very promising for the application in the liquid nitrogen temperature region. In this paper, we report successful growth of a-axis oriented (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+y films by pulsed laser deposition method on LaAlO3 (001) substrates. The maximum zero-resistance T-c obtained in our work is as high as 96 K which is 18 K higher than the T-c reported previously in this system. The magnetization and resistivity measurements reveal that the superconducting properties of the films are significantly improved. These newly observed properties enhance the prospect of potential applications of this material.

Abstract:The synthesis of high‐temperature superconducting oxides using solution chemistry has been investigated and physical properties are compared to ceramics obtained by conventional solid‐state reactions. We report on controlled precipitation and sol‐gel processes, both of which produce materials with particle sizes smaller than 5 μm. We find that the superconducting properties of the high Tc ceramics are affected by their manner of preparation, such that the transitions are slightly lower in temperature, but sharper, for samples made by solution rather than solid‐state chemistry. The ability to prepare stable viscous gels provides an opportunity for obtaining large areas of superconducting coatings. For thick films on alumina or silicon substrates, contamination from the substrate is shown to be a problem. Finally, we observe that the sol‐gel process lowers the synthesis temperature by 100 °C.

Abstract:We systematically investigated the effect of high-temperature annealing time on the structure and properties of YBCO films prepared by the TFA–MOD method. Critical current density (Jc) was measured using jc-scan Leipzig system to compare the electrical properties of the films. SEM and XRD were used to determine the microstructure and orientation of the films. The partially crystallized films have rough surfaces and impurity phases which attribute to poor electrical performance. In contrast, completely crystallized films have smooth surfaces, pure (001) YBCO phase, and exhibit high electrical performance with Jc values over 3MA/cm2 (77K, 0T) and ΔTc lower than 1K.

Abstract:The YBa2Cu3O7-x,(YBCO) superconducting thin films with Tc(R=0) of 84K and Je of 2x10(3)A/cm(2) at 77K, on polycrystalline Ni-based alloys with buffer layers of Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia (YSZ), have been prepared in situ by excimer laser. The orientation of laser- deposited YSZ buffer layers on NiCr alloys can be improved by choosing the suitable preparing parameters. The microstructure of YBCO thin films, investigated with a scanning tunneling microscopy: shows that the spiral growth structure may be an important characteristic of the high quality YBCO superconducting thin films.

Abstract:To explore high Tc in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system, many different nominal compositions have been prepared by using the traditional solid state reactions and using the method of crystallizion from glass samples. The better results are as follows: single high-Tc phase and essentially single high-Tc phase have been obtained from Bi1.8Pb0.35Sr2Ca2Cu3O and Bi2Sr2Ca6Cu7O respectively, by solid reaction. Basically single hign-T phase material with nominal composition Bi2Sr2Ca3Cu4Oy has been produced by the method of crystallizion from glass samples. The relationship between the starting composition heat treatment, preparation methods and high Tce is briefly discussed.

In this work, tri-layer YBCO/YBCO/YDyBCO films were successfully deposited on buffered Hastelloy substrate using the multi-coating lowfluorine metal-organic decomposition (LF-MOD) method and the thickness of the films can be up to 2.4 mu m. The effects of high-temperature annealing time on microstructures and superconducting properties of the films were systematically studied. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) results reveal that there remains a large amount of F element in the upper layer of the film when the annealing time is too short. With increasing the annealing time, the fluoride-containing precursor converts to YBCO grains completely. But the coarsening of grains appeared, and the critical current density (J (c)) of the film dropped slightly when the annealing time is too long. The cross-sectional scanning electron microscope (SEM) image and EDS plane analysis were applied to investigate the microstructure and element distribution of the final triple-layer YBCO films, respectively. The critical current of the final YBCO superconducting film could reach 316 A (77 k, self-field) for 1.2-cm-wide tapes with the optimal annealing conditions.
Growth and Annealing of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4+δthin Films on SrTiO3substrates

Abstract:Epitaxial La1.85Sr0.15CuO4+δ thin films were successfully deposited onto SrTiO3(100) substrates by using on-axis DC magnetron sputtering. Several different annealing and cooling processes were performed in studying the influence of the annealing processes for La1.85Sr0.15CuO4+δ thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. By using a quenching method, we found that the method can tune the superconducting transition temperature in a large viable range without changing the La/Sr ratio. We suggest that this effect is probably induced by releasing tensile strain for La1.85Sr0.15CuO4+δ thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates.
Study on the growth of YBCO films deposited by TFA-MOD method

Abstract:TFA-MOD is one of the most promising methods for depositing YBCO films. In this paper, the influence of annealing time on the growth of YBCO films deposited on (00l) LaAlO3 with this method was investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that only films with fully annealed have pure c-axis orientation, while the partially crystallized films have some impurity phase, in addition to the (OOZ) YBCO. SEM analysis shows that the grain size of YBCO increase with the annealing time, and the grains size of the partially crystallized YBCO film is not uniform with some pore. Crystallized films have smooth surface with less pore. But the films with too long annealing time have big pore even crack. Critical current increase with annealing time, and it is almost get maximum value at annealing time of 60 min. It is shown that the film can fully crystallized within 60 min annealing time with growth rate of 0.16 nm/s.

Abstract:The fully reacted Bi2223/Ag tapes were heat treated again under certain conditions in order to improve the connectivity of Bi-2223 grains and the superconducting properties, namely post-annealing. The critical current and angular dependence of critical current were measured using four probe method. The microstructure and phase composition were analyzed using XRD and SEM. Experimental results show that the post-annealing process at low temperature in reduced oxygen partial pressure can improve the superconducting properties of Bi-2223/Ag tapes.

Abstract:Rapid heating is highly sought-after for compositional control in the sintering-annealing process of materials containing volatile elements. Although several innovative approaches have been reported, suitable processes for the rapid annealing of thin films are still very rare. Herein, we develop a high-temperature rapid heating method for thin-film preparation through employing an indium tin oxide (ITO)/mica-based flexible transparent heater (FTH). The ITO/mica FTH shows an extremely fast thermal response (2 s), high saturation temperature (>830 degrees C), and high heating-cooling rates (>10(4) degrees C min(-1)). Thermodynamic analysis reveals that the excellent heating performance can be largely attributed to the high heat-transfer coefficient and the low thickness of the mica substrates. The remarkable potential of our ITO/mica FTH for practical use is unambiguously evident by the demonstration of water heating and rapid thermal annealing of ferroelectric oxide thin films.
