Abstract:The flow and heat transfer in a finned flat tube heat exchanger with crossed discrete double inclined ribs (CDDIR) were studied numerically. Air was used as the working fluid with Reynolds numbers between 600 and 1400. The heat transfer is enhanced by secondary flows around the ribs and a series of vortices generated downstream of the ribs, including the main vortices, induced vortices and corner vortices. The streamwise local heat transfer shows that there exists an optimal distance from the inlet to the leading edge of the CDDIR. The heat transfer and pressure drop were investigated for various rib heights, rib pitches and attack angles. The results show that both the Nusselt numbers and friction factors increase with the rib height and decrease with the increasing rib pitch. The Nusselt number for the attack angle of α=45° is larger than for α=30° and α=60°. The friction factor increases with the attack angle.
