Abstract:Based on stationary wavelet packet transform and Hilbert transform, the paper proposes a fault detection algorithm, which adaptively extracts the fault characteristic component of the signal. Firstly, the algorithm uses one-level stationary wavelet packet transform to decompose the signal into low- and high-frequency sub-bands. Subsequently, Hilbert transform is used to obtain the instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude of the low- or high-frequency sub-band. Based on the preset frequency and amplitude criteria, the algorithm decides whether to further decompose the sub-band or hold it. Thus the algorithm adaptively selects the path of stationary wavelet packet decomposition, making a multi-resolution spectral analysis on the signal and extracting the characteristic components for fault detection. The simulations show that the algorithm provides sufficient frequency-amplitude fault information with the less computational workloads and has better anti-noise performance.

Abstract:Based on studying the typical fault characteristics of an electro-hydraulic servo-system which is centered on the electro-hydraulic servo-valve, the wavelet transform is able to detect signal singularities and their signature in accordance with the localization time varying feature on the signals of the system.A practical technique is applied to the feature fault diagnostic for the electro-hydraulic servo-system. The fault feature of the eletro-hydraulic servo-system is recognized by multi-rule criterion.

Abstract:Hilbert-Huang Transform(HHT) has been proved to be a good method for analyzing nonlinear and nonstationary signals.This paper introduces HHT into the fault measurement of power system.The fault signal is firstly decomposed into intrinsic mode function(IMF) by the EMD method.Then instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude is obtained by Hilbert transform to compose Hilbert spectrum.Thus the transient caused by fault can be analyzed and further detected accurately through the instantaneous frequency and the time-frequency-amplitude spectra analysis.Simulations show that the HHT-based method is accurate at fault location and fault message abstraction,which enhance the reliability of fault detection.

Abstract:This paper analyses characteristics of single-phase ground fault and presents a fault line selecting method based on wavelet transform. Base on Sampling frequency, it selects the special frequency band, the singularity detection with wavelet is employed to obtain the polarities and magnitudes of the abrupt of current, and through comparing the polarities and magnitudes the fault circuit can be determined. So the detection technique is correct, feasible, it is proved by a great deal of simulating tests.

Abstract:Fault location in distribution systems includes 2 subtasks: fault distance estimation and fault section identification. This paper presents a fault location method based on reclosure-generating traveling waves and system topology. Firstly, the reclosure-generating traveling waves under normal and fault conditions are analyzed to find the traveling wave reflected by fault point, through which the fault distance could be estimated. Secondly, we propose a fault section identification method by comparing real measured traveling waves with simulated traveling waves with different potential fault points. Noticing that only time information of traveling waves rather than their magnitude is necessary, instead of using electromagnetic transient simulation, we also present a simplified simulation algorithm that only focuses on the arrival time of traveling waves based on priority queue. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can locate fault points in high accuracy with low computational burden.

Abstract:VSC-HVDC is a kind of HVDC technology which based on voltage source converter and turn-off devices. Its poor over voltage/current capacity are prone to failure. Based on the established VSC-HVDC system simulation model, the DC voltage waveforms under various fault conditions are achieved, and then the character of system fault is decided according to the amplitude fluctuation range of DC voltage. Moreover, in full consideration of influence of transmission power, the wavelet analysis method is adopted to extract the feature of faulty signal, and combined with artificial neural network the system fault is identified. Simulation results show that this method can diagnose and identify VSC-HVDC fault effectively, and the accuracy is not impacted by transmission power.

Abstract:Accurately identifying the traveling wave reflected by the fault point is the key to single-ended traveling wave based fault location. Affected by the complex structure and branch lines of the power distribution line, the identification of the traveling waves reflected by the fault point is very difficult. This paper proposes a single-ended fault location for single-phase-to-ground in power distribution lines using switches reclosure generated travelling waves. The paper analyses the difference of travelling waves in three independent line-mode networks and constructs the travelling wave reflected by the fault point directly. And the distance to the fault point from the measuring point is calculated according to the time of switch reclosure generated initial wave and the reflected wave by the fault point. This method is not affected by branch lines and transition resistance. PSCAD simulations verify the accuracy and reliability of the method.

Abstract:Though flexible DC distribution system (FDCDS) is becoming a new hotspot in power systems lately because of the rapid development of power electronic devices and massive use of renewable energy, the failure to realize accurate fault location with high precision restricts its further application. Thus, a novel precise pole-to-ground fault location method of FDCDS based on wavelet transform (WT) and convolution neural network (CNN) is proposed in this paper for the limitation on the number of measuring points and high difficulty in extracting characteristics of FDCDS. The fault voltage signal is decomposed with multi-resolution by discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and then the transient energy function is constructed to select the frequency bands containing rich fault characteristics for signal reconstruction. The reconstructed signal forms two-dimensional time-frequency images through continuous wavelet transform (CWT), which are used as the input of CNN classifier after image enhancement to form the mapping relation between the fault feature and fault position using the powerful generalization ability of CNN, so as to complete fault location with high precision. The sample data on PSCAD/EMTDC verifies the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method, which can achieve fault location with positioning precision of 30 m. The proposed method overcomes the influence of the control strategy of the converter and the number of input capacitors of the bridge arm in the time-domain analysis, and still has strong robustness in the case that FDCDS is connected with many distributed generations (DGs) with output fluctuation. Furthermore, four other methods for fault location as comparisons are given to reflect the validity and anti-interference ability of proposed methods in various noises.

Abstract:Faults may be generated in power networks as a result of bad weather, human activities, or some other factors. The complex structure of power network adds to the difficulty of fault location (FL). This paper presents a novel FL scheme by utilizing the information of the time differences of arrival (TDOAs) of modal traveling waves (MTWs) asynchronously sampled in the network. First, the fault area is determined by searching the minimum TDOA of MTWs. Then, by applying the fictitious fault point method in the fault area, the minimum accumulated difference is used to detect the fault line. Finally, the accurate FL is estimated by solving the objective function of the absolute distance between the FL and multiple FL candidates. Various simulations are carried out in the IEEE 30-bus system. The calculation results demonstrate that the method is not affected by fault impedance, inception angle, location, and noises to a certain extent.

Abstract:To tackle the challenge of localization failure due to traveling wave dispersion during a mid-line fault in a long high-voltage cable, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of the refraction characteristics of the cumulative three-phase sheath currents at cross commutation points and direct grounding points, facilitated by detailed theoretical derivation. We introduce the novel concept of a 'first traveling wave attenuation index,' which quantifies the peak of the initial faulted traveling wave. We strategically place distributed traveling wave detection devices solely in the first direct grounding box of each cross-interconnected main section, effectively segmenting the line into five distinct zones. These zones are identified based on the unique transient polarities exhibited by the first traveling wave of fault current at each impedance mismatch point along the cable. To overcome the issue of weak traveling wave signals collected at the first end measurement point, we propose an innovative peak detection method for the first wave. This method harnesses the power of empirical wavelet transform (EWT) and multi-resolution singular value decomposition (MRSVD), providing a significant boost in ranging accuracy compared to traditional wavelet methods. Simulation results validate the efficacy of our proposed fault location method, which accurately pinpoints the fault section by contrasting the polarity of the first wave peak of the sheath current detected at each measurement point. Notably, our method ensures safety and convenience as the equipment does not require direct contact with high voltage.

Abstract:With the extensive use of power cable in China, power cable fault is also increasing year by year, seriously affecting the power grid and the national economy. Cable location is the precondition of eliminating cable faults. But up to now, mature cable fault location methods in the world are mostly based on off-lion status and there is still lack of effective method on-line method. So it has practical significance to study cable on-line fault location. In this paper, wavelet analysis concept is introduced, and research wavelet application in on-line fault location which based on multi-resolution analysis and modulus maximums. Three methods are proposed: line model time difference method, line-zero module time difference method and wave velocity irrelevant method. Those three methods are also simulated and compared in different fault situation. Cable fault simulation model is building in Matlab, after the Analysis of the results, arrive at a more appropriate method.

Abstract:Fault location in distribution systems is difficult for multiple discontinuities, such as branch and junction points on feeders. This paper proposes a scheme for fault location in distribution systems using network topology information and circuit breaker reclosure-generating travelling waves. Based on the topology information, the circuit breaker closure-generating travelling waves can be got through analysis. When a permanent fault occurs, the circuit breaker reclosure-generating travelling waves contain the information on fault position. In this paper, the difference between the pre-fault travelling waves and post-fault travelling waves induced by the breaker reclosing in a feeder, defined as reclosing superimposed travelling waves, is calculated. For the reclosing superimposed travelling waves, the initial travelling wave reflects the fault distance. Subsequently, wavelet transform is applied to extract the travelling wave reflected from the fault point. Finally, the time difference between the reclosing instant and the arrival instant of the reflected travelling wave is employed to calculate the fault distance. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, several simulations were carried out using ATP-EMTP software. The simulation results indicated that the proposed scheme can be effective in fault location for distributed feeders, regardless of grounding system type.

Firstly, the paper introduces field fault phenomenon from intermittent traveling waves to permanent power-frequency voltage or current change. Then the basic principle of fault forecast is proposed based on detecting disturbance generated traveling waves occurrence frequency in one feeder. Further the fault forecast scheme using wavelet transform is presented. Lastly a fault forecast prototype is implemented.

Abstract:To prevent the further escalation of multiple faults in transmission networks, which could lead to severe accidents, this article proposes an accurate fault location method for multiple faults using simulated virtual faults (VFs) traveling waves. The method is validated by comparing it with real faults wavefront sequences. Initially, the article analyzes the interactions and aliasing phenomena of traveling waves from different fault sources at measurement points based on their propagation characteristics. It also discusses the relative temporal and amplitude relationships between different fault wavefront sequences. Then, a matching method between VF wavefront sequences and real fault wavefront sequences is proposed, and a wavefront sequence matching ratio is formulated to quantify the location disparity between the VFs and real faults. Finally, the article introduces a multiple faults location mechanism and achieves accurate fault location for multiple faults using the dynamic virtual faults traveling wave location method. Verified through the PSCAD simulation platform, the proposed method is unaffected by errors in wave propagation speed, eliminates the need for terminal traveling wave measuring equipment, and can accurately locate up to three faults with a location error less than 100 m.

Abstract:In the flexible DC distribution network without DC circuit breaker, due to the poor ability of power electronic components to withstand fault current, it is required to quickly detect the fault, lock the converter and turn off the fault current, which leads to the limited data left for fault location. The root cause of the fault is the addition of a fault branch in the system, which causes the change of network topology and the change of electrical quantity. This paper uses the measured traveling wave to identify the topological difference between the normal network and the post fault network, extracts the reflected wave head only from the fault point, and determines the fault location according to the time of the reflected wave head. Simulation results show that the proposed method is feasible and has high accuracy.

Abstract:Due to the complex structure of the T-connection transmission lines, it is extremely difficult to identify the reflected travelling wave from the fault point and that from the connection point by the measurement from only one terminal. According to the characteristics of the structure of the T-connection transmission line, the reflection of the travelling wave within the line after the failure of different sections in T-connection transmission line are analyzed. Based on the lattice diagram of the travelling wave, the sequence of travelling waves detected at the measuring terminal varies with the fault distance and the faulty section. Moreover, the sequence of travelling waves detected in one terminal is unique at each faulty section. This article calculates the arrival time of travelling waves of fault points at different locations in different sections to form the collection of the travelling wave arrival time sequence. Then the sequence of travelling waves of the new added fault waveforms is extracted to compare with the sequences in the collection for the faulty section identification and fault location. This proposed method can accurately locate the fault with different fault types, fault resistances and system impedances by only single-terminal fault data. Both Power Systems Computer Aided Design/ Electromagnetic Transients including DC (PSCAD/EMTDC) and actual measurement data are implemented to verify the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:<p>Transmission network faults may not be located accurately in some abnormal conditions, such as traveling wave location device faults, startup failure and time recording error. In order to improve them, a novel traveling wave fault location method based on time linear dependence is proposed. The proximal point optimization algorithm (PPOA) is used to find the shortest transmission path of fault traveling wave. The linear fitting between the arrival time of the traveling wave head recorded by each substation and the transmission distance is made on the Cartesian coordinate plane, according to the characteristic that the length of the shortest path is directly proportional to the traveling wave transmission time. The information fusion for the traveling wave arrival time at each substation is achieved by linear regression analysis to correct the error information. The accurate fault location is obtained direct by coordinate information of the intersection of the fitted line and the coordinate axis. Finally, the traveling wave location system based on this method has been successfully tested in Hunan Power Grid. PSCAD simulation and field test results prove that the proposed method can effectively reduce the recording error in the arrival time of the fault traveling wave at each substation while improving the reliability and accuracy of fault location.</p>

Abstract:identification of the wave fronts is the precondition of travelling wave based fault location. Many factors may affect a precise identification of the wave fronts, among which the transfer characteristics of the secondary circuit are in focus. The resonance nature of the secondary circuit which consists of current transformers and secondary cables causes certain noises in the recorded travelling waves. Hence, travelling wave based single-ended fault location is affected. Transfer characteristics of the secondary circuit are analyzed in the paper. High-frequency model of the secondary circuit is obtained and the transfer function is derived. The noises are proved to be two damped oscillation components mixed together. To overcome this, a novel single-ended fault location scheme is proposed. Impedance fault location algorithm, dyadic wavelet transform and Prony analysis are involved. A high-precise fault recording and location device is developed and implemented in several 220 kV substations in Shandong, China. Recorded waveforms of a single-phase-to-ground fault have proven both the analysis and the proposed fault location scheme.

Abstract:Identification and verification of the wave fronts is the precondition of single-ended travelling wave based fault location methods. The fault locators can obtain the data only from the secondary circuit which consists of the current transformer, the secondary cable and the secondary load. Therefore, transfer characteristics of the secondary circuit must be studied first. The high frequency model of the secondary circuit was built and the transfer function was obtained. The damped oscillation in the recorded traveling waves was explained. Based on the discovery, a single-ended fault location scheme involving an impedance fault location algorithm, the dyadic wavelet transform and Prony analysis was proposed in the paper. Relevant traveling wave fault locator was developed and implemented in a 220 kV substation. Recorded waveforms of a single-phase-to-ground fault has proved both the analysis and the location scheme. Abundant simulation results based on EMTP/ATP have also demonstrated the validity and improvement of the novel assembled single-ended fault location method.
