Abstract:Finite element method (FEM) was used to partition the area of buried cables with outer heat sources and calculate the temperature field with given cable load. Bin-search method was used to calculate the cable load until the temperature of conductor is equal to the long endurable temperature of insulation and obtain the ampacity of buried cables with outer heat source and variation of temperature of air. The result gives out the relationship of the ampacity with the distance between outside of cables and outer heat source and the relationship of the ampacity with the variation of temperature of air. The result gives out a reference for practice.

Abstract:In this paper,temperature distributions of buried cable were analyzed according to the knowledge of heat transfer,after constructing heat conduction equation and boundary condition,temperature distributions were calculated with the finite element method in which the grids diˉvided into a triangle format.The ampacities of cables are solved with dichotomy.Temperature distribution maps of three single core cables and the relation between ampacities and buried depth are obtained.

Abstract:Accurately calculation of cable ampacity is one of the critical issues to improve the economics of cables and realize the efficient transmission of cable cluster laying. In this point of view, this paper investigates numerical calculations of the multi-physics fields of cables in the cable trenches and its ampacity. For this goal, the corresponding finite element models of the coupled multi-physics fields are developed. The models can help to obtain the temperature distribution and the air velocity distribution in the cable trench under a given load current. Besides, the temperature field changes of the cables in the cable trenches are analyzed.

Abstract:Based on convection of ground surface and temperature of soil deep under the surface unchanged, open domain temperature field of underground cable system is equivalent to close domain temperature field. Finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the temperature field of underground cable system given load current. Loss in cable sheath is attributed to cable conductor based on thermal circuit method. The thin layer of cable is handled by harmonic mean method, and the cable is equivalent to two layers, conductor and outer layer. Number of FEM nodes is reduced. Accuracy and rate of calculation is improved. Ampacity of underground cable system is calculated by subtense truncation approach. The results of test and calculation show that FEM is effective to calculate the temperature field and ampacity of underground cable system in engineering.

Abstract:When several cables are buried in soil, there is thermal infection among cables. This effect makes the ampacity of every cable reduced. The ampacity of every cable can be calculated by the formula introduced by IEC 60287. The environment temperature in the formula is the sum of soil temperature and temperature rise caused by other cables. The temperature rise caused by other cables can be calculated by the method of mirror image. So, the ampacity of every cable will be decided by other cables, Gauss-Seidel iterative method is used to solve the equation group which is consisted of ampacity of different cables, and calculate the ampacity of equally load and unequally load and different environment condition. The test result shows that the calculating result conform to the request of project.

Abstract:Buried power cables are widely used because it has the advantages of a short construction cycle and an excellent heat dissipation ability. Different laying condition in the process of operations has an important impact on the temperature rise and ampacity of the power cable. In this paper.a multi-physics coupled field model of the electromagnetic field and the thermal field is first developed. In this respect, on the basis of burial laying, one takes into account the heat dissipation mode of the cable, heat dissipation path, characteristic parameters of the materials and other factors. The soil thermal conductivity is an important parameter to determine the accuracy of the cable's temperature field and ampacity. In this regard, a mathematical model for inversion of the soil thermal conductivity and cable ampacity is then proposed. The single-target immune clone selection algorithm(ICSA) is used to solve the corresponding inverse problem. The numerical results show that the inverse method is quite useful to the numerical calculation of the buried cables' ampacity and favorable to the ampacity's improvement.

Abstract:In order to fully utilize the current-carrying capacity of power cables, it is demanding to accurately calculate cables real-time ampacity. In this point of view, a real-time ampacity calculation methodology based on environmental information is proposed. Firstly, a coupled multi-physics cable model is constructed. Secondly, the real-time environmental information is obtained based on a thermocouple and a distributed optical fiber temperature measurement system (DTS). Based on these, the real-time ampacity of cables is calculated by Newton method. The numerical results on a case study indicate that the real-time ampacity calculated by using the proposed methodology is approximately 39.08% higher as compared to the nominal ampacity.

Abstract:Cable tunnel in a multi-loop laying arrangement can improve the underground space utilization. Forced ventilation is an effective measure to increase the ampacity of the cables in such application, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the cable. However, the commonly used IEC-60287 standard for ampacity computation is an analytical method based on ideal models and simplified conditions without considering the three-dimensional distribution of a physical field. In this respect, this paper establishes a three-dimensional coupled multi-physics field model, and solves the distributions of the temperature field and fluid field in the long-distance cable tunnel based on the finite element method. Also, the paper studies the variation law of the cable temperature field under the forced ventilation and its influence on the ampacity. The results show that in the forced ventilation, the air velocity and temperature are the key factors affecting the ampacity. Higher air velocity is conducive to heat dissipation in the tunnel, effectively increasing the ampacity. The higher the air temperature is, the less heat is dissipated in the tunnel, and the more decreased corresponding ampacity.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach for the determination of buried cable ampacity, considering the humidity migration in soil caused by the temperature rising around cables, and compares calculated results with migrationless considerations. To optimize the utilization of current carrying capacity, accurate calculation of real-time ampacity is needed in case of buried cable transmission systems, which is dependent on analysis of thermal field under application environment. The heat generated from the long-running buried cables can possibly drive away the moisture contained in the soil in the direction of temperature gradient. What's more, the decrease of moisture content could reduce the thermal conductivity of the soil around cables, which distinctively lessens the current carrying capacity of cables. Hence, the ampacity of buried cables could drop with time thanks to the coupling of heat and moisture in soil. This paper presents a new model to calculate the ampacity of buried cables, which has taken the humidity migration in soil into account. Complementary laboratory measurements show that the calculation model proposed in the paper (Model II) is more refined, compared with IEC standards (Model I). When factors like depth of laying, surface wind velocity and environment temperature varies, the calculation results of Model I is smaller and its trends distinctively differ from Model II, which matches the practice better.

Abstract:With the continuous increase of electric power load, the capacity and peak overload can no longer meet the demand of power supply well. The current carrying capacity of the cable should be increased as much as possible to solve the above problems. The current carrying capacity of power cables is difficult to determine because it is affected by many factors such as the laying method, operating conditions, and surrounding environment. Therefore, accurately calculating the current carrying capacity of power cables under complex conditions has great significance for ensuring the cables' safety and economy. Power cables are the main medium for urban power transmission. Accurately calculating the current carrying capacity and planning the laying method of power cables are of great significance for reliable power supply. Because cables are always laid by complicated methods and harsh environments, which mean that various factors can affect the ampacity and temperature field distribution, it is difficult to entirely rely on the current IEC standard for calculations. Based both on the IEC standard and heat transfer principles, this paper establishes models for buried cables in different soils and laying methods. The finite element algorithm is used to analyze the current carrying capacity and temperature field distribution of power cables.

Abstract:Finite difference method (FDM) is used to divide the transient temperature calculation process of underground cable systems into discrete groups of transient time step, and finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate each time step-temperature distribution of underground cable systems, and the transient temperature distribution of underground cable systems is calculated. Based on the calculation of the transient temperature distribution, short-term ampacity of underground cable systems is calculated by Newton iteration method. The result of test and calculation show that the method with FEM and FDM is an effective method to calculate the transient temperature field and short-term ampacity of underground cables in engineering.

Abstract:Due to the influence of many factors, distribution cables are often densely placed at the bottom of the cable trench. As a result, it is easy for distribution cables to become the thermal bottleneck of the whole transmission line. To address this dilemma, this paper establishes a finite element simulation model of a cable trench to analyze the hot spots of cables with different arrangements in the cable trench. Then, the model's accuracy is verified based on real temperature rise experiments. For an arrangement with overheating risk, the ampacity improvement method of filling the cable trench with high-thermal-conductivity material was proposed, and the ampacity improvement effect under different filling ratios was assessed. Finally, combined with the analysis of economic benefit and cost, the method of determining the optimal filling ratio was used, and the impact resistance of the cables under the impact of new energy load was analyzed. The results indicate that, for the case of the optimal filling ratio, the cables in the dense cable trench showed superior impact resistance. The investigations in this paper make significant contributions to the promotion of the maximum utilization of cables.

Abstract:This paper aims to reduce the tunnel cable systems' power loss using different grounding and loss reduction methods. The submarine tunnel power cable project at Ningbo-Zhoushan in China is considered here as a case study. The cable is divided into micro-element segment, and their nodal admittance matrices are established using the telegraph equation. This approach helps to avert the prerequisite of diagonalizing the propagation matrix. For the analysis of induced voltage and circulating current in the cable sheath, the cascading algorithm is used while considering the presence of grounding node. It is found that the mixed cable laying methods and different lengths between minor sections result in a high circulating sheath current. This study finds that coordinating the amplitude and phase angle of series impedance inserted at the cross-bonded joint can reduce the cable system's power loss.

Abstract:The calculation methods of short-term permissible load-current for power cables laid in air and buried in earth are introduced, and some relevant issues are studied, that is, the choice of the region number to divide the surrounding soil and the determination of the core temperature for cables that is not fully loaded. Based on them, and referring to the determination of parameters in current capacity as well, the methods to calculate the short-term load-current for cables buried in earth with backfill soil and laid in pipes in cement duct are presented and certified by simple calculation instances. The design means can be extended to other laying conditions of power cables.

Abstract:To realize rapid calculation of steady temperature rise of complex buried cable group,a method based on the transfer matrix and the superposition principle of heat conductive field is proposed.The combined effect of the cable group is discretized into independent effects of multiple conductors.Then,the transfer matrix characterizing the thermal properties of the cable group can be obtained with the finite element calculation.In an example,the temperature rise of a buried cable group with six cables is calculated with the finite element method and the proposed method,respectively.The result obtained by the proposed fast calculation method based on transfer matrix is consistent with that by the finite element method,which verifies the accuracy of the proposed method.Besides,the software CYMCAP is adopted to extract the transfer matrix and then calculate the temperature rise,and comparison of thethus obtained resultwith that of the finite element method further verifies the availability of the proposed fast calculation method.

Abstract:As more and more power cables are being used in power circuits,identifying the thermal field distribution of power cables and cable ampacity is very important to improve the capacity utilization of power cables so that adequate adjustment of cable loading can be achieved.Consequently,we evaluated the ampacity of XLPE cables laid in duct with pipes,which was 230 kV high voltage power cable in 250 MVA transformer substation.Using the principle of heat transfer theory and finite element method（FEM）,we developed a model for power cable thermal field,in which complex triangle finite element was divided as meshes in region,namely,dense meshes in cables and sparse ones in other areas were divided so as to improve the running speed of the program and operation precision.The thermal field of cables and surrounding cables was computed using FEM.The results show that through simulation with MATLAB,the temperature field distribution of the cable and its surroundings are obtained,the ampacity of single XLPE power cable systems are calculated by iteration method,proving that FEM can be used to analyze temperature field of underground cable system.

Abstract:With the increasing consumption of power cable in urban areas, its ampacity becomes a hot research spot. At present, lots of researches about ampacity and temperature field concentrate on one single-core cable. However, pluralities of cables are laid intensively in duct banks for a real power system. Compared to single cable, if several cables are running at the same time, those cables' temperature and ampacity are affected by each other leading to low ampacity. Usually, existing ampacity standards are formulated by experience and not comprehensive enough for different regions. Therefore, it's a huge and urgent demand to determine transient temperature field distribution of different laying theoretically. In this paper, in order to meet the huge demand, a temperature field model of cable group is worked out via the finite element method (FEM) and calculated by load current curves in real power system. Dispatcher and maintenance personnel can determine the ampacity reasonably to ensure safety for dispatching and management.

Abstract:Precisely determining how cables distribute their current-carrying capacity and temperature field is crucial for the dependable and cost-effective functioning of power grids. Firstly, the power cable structure and the advantages and disadvantages of different laying methods are analyzed in detail. Secondly, the theoretical model of current-carrying capacity calculation and temperature field of power cables, including heat convection, heat conduction, and heat radiation, is constructed, and the method for calculating cable current-carrying capacity, relying on the double-point chordal interception method, is suggested. Then, the COMSOL multiphysics 6.2 finite element simulation software is utilized to create a simulation model that aligns with the real cable laying technique. Finally, the current-carrying capacity and temperature field of power cables are simulated and analyzed for different arrangements of power cables in three laying modes, namely directly buried, row pipe, and trench. The simulation results show that the cable laying method greatly affects the cable's carrying capacity; the more centralized the cable distribution, the smaller the flow. The method can be realized in different ways of laying power cables in the real-time rapid calculation of flow as the actual laying of power cables has an important reference and reference significance.

Analysis of the eddy current loss and economy study in underground cable duct

Abstract:In order to solve the issue of the electrical energy loss which is generated by the eddy current in traditional underground steel rein-forced duct model, a finite element model and method was proposed to analyze the eddy current field and temperature field in the complex en-vironment underground model and a scheme of using the glass fiber reinforced polymer ( GFRP) instead of the steel in the underground duct was proposed. Moreover, the three-dimension eddy current-temperature coupled field was computed by adopting a fast convergence, high ac-curacy mesh technique and an iteration solver for coupled multi-physics field;The eddy current distribution of the metal component, tempera-ture field distribution of the whole model were obtained;also the temperature of the cable cores under a harmonic current condition was ana-lyzed. The technical and economic performances of the traditional and proposed model were compared. The results indicate that the scheme of using GFRP instead of steel can reduce the loss, and possess better economic performance at the same time.

Abstract:Due to the increase of power load in the central area of big cities, the application of power cables are quickly increased. Compared with other laying methods, pipeline shows some significant advantages, and also some disadvantages such as the difficulty of obtaining its temperature distribution and setting its suitable ampacity. On the basis of FEM model of temperature field of 10kV underground pipe-laid power cables, the optimization design theory is applied to obtain the optimum scheme of current distribution of cable groups which is used as the reference value of rated ampacity of each cable. Compared with the traditional method, the optimization algorithm significantly improves the total ampacity of cable groups. The algorithm can be used to instruct the optimization design of power cables, and also to adjust the current of operating cables. The developed software is helpful for controlling the economic operation of pipe-laid power cables. © 2011 IEEE.
