Abstract:With more and more exploitation and utilization of seawater and geothermal water, the demand of determining the concentration of K+, Na+, Ca2+ and Cl- in them has been increased. A method of flow-injection serial- ion selective electrodes (FI-ISE-S) for simultaneous and rapid determination of K+, Na+, Ca2+ and Cl- in sea water and geothermal water was established. In the research, various influence factors of the FI-ISE-S system were investigated and optimized, including flow rate of system, sampling volume, the length of mixing coil, interfering substances, the acidity and ion concentration of the total ion strength adjusting buffer solution. Among the optimal conditions, the analysis speed of the system is 100 samples · h-1; the consumption of the sample is only 160 μL per time; the relative standard deviation (RSD) is less than 1.96% (n=11); the recoveries obtained by adding K+, Na+, Ca2+ and Cl- in the samples are in range of 91.9%~109.6%; and the linear determination ranges of the method are 1.0~8.0 mmol · L-1 for K+, 50~290 mmol · L-1 for Na+, 3.2~16.0 mmol · L-1 for Ca2+, 70~430 mmol · L-1 for Cl-. It has been successfully applied in the determination of seawater and geothermal water.
Determination of High Concentration of Ca(Ⅱ) in Geothermal Water with Flow Injection-Micro-flow-through Ion Selective Electrode

Abstract:The FI-micro-flow-through Ca(Ⅱ) selective electrode(FI-MF-Ca(Ⅱ) ISE) was applied to the determination of high concentration of Ca(Ⅱ) in geothermal water.Various influential factors were studied.The optimized conditions were as follows: ① length of the mixing coil: 30 cm;② flow rate of the carrier: 0.99 mL·min-1;③ sampling volume: 60 μL;④ total ionic strength adjusting buffer solution(pH 9.7): a mixed solution containing 0.02 mol·L-1 sodium borate,0.02 mol·L-1 sodium hydroxide,10 mg·L-1 Ca(Ⅱ) and 0.60 mol·L-1 sodium chloride,with a flow-rate of 0.88 mL·min-1.Linearity range of the method was kept between 0.16-20.00 g·L-1.Precision of the method was tested at the concentration levels of 1.00 and 2.00 g·L-1 of Ca(Ⅱ) for 11 determination.Values of RSD′s were found to be 2.8% and 1.8%,respectively.The proposed method was used in the analysis of samples of geothermal water,giving values of recovery by standard addition method in the range of 102%-111%.

Abstract:A rapid and accurate method for simultaneous determination of K+ ,Ca2+ ,Na+ and Cl- in radish was established by using ion selective electrode coupled with flow-injection asynchronous injection.The optimum conditions were as follows:the flow rate was 2.43 mL·min-1 ;the total ion strength adjustment buffer consists of 80 mmol·L-1 of Tris-H3 BO3 (pH 6.00),0.05 mmol·L-1 of Na+ ,0.5 mmol·L-1 of K+ ,0.01 mmol·L-1 of Ca2+ and 0.57 mmol·L-1 of Cl- ;the reaction coil length was 50 cm;the sampling volume was 220 μL;the pH of the mixed standard solution was 6.00.The linearity ranges of K+ ,Ca2+ ,Na+ and Cl- were 10-70,0.5-7.0, 10-36,21 -119 mmol·L-1 ,respectively,with detection limits (3s/k)of 5.0,0.2,5.0,10 mmol·L-1 , respectively.Recovery rates obtained by standard addition method were in the range of 92.8%-110% and RSD (n=11)was less than 2.0%.

Abstract:Calcium (Ca2+) is an important major cation in seawater, which is closely related to the oceanic biogeochemistry cycle. Direct and accurate determination of Ca2+ concentration is required for a more comprehensive study of the carbonate system in seawater. Due to the high background concentration of Ca2+ in seawater and small variances of Ca2+ during CaCO3 precipitation and dissolution process, a precision of better than 0.1% (of approximately ± 10 μmol/kg) is very much desired for carbonate chemistry related studies. In this study, a simple, non-toxic and labor-saving technique using ion chromatography (IC) has been developed to determine Ca2+ in seawater with an overall precision of better than 0.1%. Due to lack of available commercial calcium standard in seawater matrix, IAPSO seawater was selected as the reference after calibration. This proposed method can get a result within 15 min and only requires a small sample volume (∼1 ml). The concentrations and flow rates of the eluent have been optimized to achieve the best chromatographic separation (20 mmol/L and 1.0 mL/min were selected in this study). Our work suggests that sample dilutions by weighing have no discernible effect on Ca2+ determinations. However, the measured Ca2+ concentration shows a linear decrease with the increasing Mg/Ca ratio in samples, which could be corrected by a derived formula to achieve high accuracy within 0.1%. This optimized method has been applied to the analysis of Ca2+ distribution in Southwest Indian Ocean and the laboratory study on the calcite precipitation in seawater.

Abstract:A quick determination method for sodium ion of boiler water and steam at power plants with flow-injection analysis(FIA)and ion selective electrode(ISE)has been expoitured.The basiclize can be accomplished automatically,and the measurement is under sealed circumvent.The electrodes can be rinsed automatically;there is good linearity in the range of 2～100 μg/L.Also,it analyzs very quickly,50 samples/h can be analyzed and the consumption of sample is only 0.3mL/sample.It has been used to determine the trace-level sodium of boiler water and steam at power plants successfully.Alkalization reagent dosage is about 1/50 of general industrial sodium Instrument.The new pattern on-line sodium instrument based on it can reduce alkali dissipation,improve economy index,protect environment.

Abstract:A new method for the determination of major metal elements in high salinity brines was developed by solution cathode glow discharge (SCGD) with flow injection analysis (FIA). The matrix interferences of major cations and anions in brines have been evaluated. It was found that high concentration of Na(+) and K(+) could interfere each other, K(+) at a concentration of 400mgL(-1) enhanced the signal intensity of Na(+) more than 20%. The effect of the anions was observed and it was noted that the signal intensity of both Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) were suppressed significantly when the SO4(2-) reached 100mgL(-1). It was demonstrated that some low molecular weight organic substances such as formic acid, glycerol and ascorbic acid could eliminate interference of SO4(2-) even with volume percentages of 0.5%. Under the optimized condition, the proposed FIA-SCGD can determine K, Na, Ca and Mg with the limits of detection of 0.49 (K), 0.14 (Na), 11 (Ca) and 5.5 (Mg) ngmL(-1). The proposed method has been successfully applied to the analysis of 5 salt lake samples and compared with those obtained with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The advantages of small size, low energy consumption, good stability and repeatability indicated that the SCGD is promising for the determination of major ions in brine samples.

Abstract:Forming silica scale on reinjection wells are a serious problem at geothermal power plants. If we can continuously monitoring the high concentrations of silicate in geothermal waters and control the dosage of silica-scale prevention reagents, the creating of the silica scale can be avoided. Consequently, based on a new merging zones mode of the asynchronous injection, we established a flow injection spectrophotometry for directly determining the high concentrations silicate in geothermal waters. The optimized various conditions were as follows; concentrations of ammonium molybdate, sodium hydroxide and oxalic acid were 2% (w/V), 0.1 mol/L, and 1% (w/V), respectively; lengths of premixing, reaction and masking coils were 350 cm 160 cm, and 300 cm, respectively; total flow rate was 2.0 mL/min. Only 25 mu L of the sample and 120 mu L of the reagent were consumed per time in this method, the determination range was 25 - 800 mg/L (SiO2), relative standard deviation was less than 2.0%, recovery ranges were 94.1% -110.5%, about 60 samples can be analyzed per hour. Merits of the system were good reproducibility, fast speed, less cost, and no needing pre-dilution for determination of high concentrations silicate.

Abstract:Determination of Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in seawater is currently performed by using either laborious wet chemical methods or physical ones requiring complicated and expensive instruments. The present study assessed the feasibility of using capillary electrophoresis (CE) as an alternative method for analysis of these metal ions in seawater samples and the robustness of CE in determination of the metal ions in samples of complex matrices. Imidazole was added in various electrophoretic media to provide UV absorbing background for indirect detection and 18-crown-6 was utilized to manipulate selectivity through complexation. Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in seawater samples could be determined in an electrophoretic medium of 40 mM 18-crown-6 and 10 mM imidazole at pH 4.5 with an internal standard of Li+, but quantitative determination of K+ had to be carried out in another separate run by using an electrophoretic medium of relatively low concentration of 18-crown-6 to improve the precision of the quantitative results. It was demonstrated that CE could be a fast, simple and low cost means for the determination of Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ in seawater with fairly good robustness.

Abstract:Using self-generating KOH as eluent,several routine ions in the sea water,such as F~(-),Cl~(-),Br~(-),NO~-_(3),SO~(2-)_(4),PO~(3-)_(4) and I~(-) can be determined simultaneously with anion-exchange,gradient separation,and suppressor conductivity detection.Using 8 mmol/L H_2SO_4 as eluent,Na~(+),K~(+),Mg~(2+),Ca~(2+),Sr~(2+) and Ba~(2+) in the sea water can be determined simultaneously with cation-exchange separation and suppressor conductivity detection.Each cation and anion can get favorable linearality and low detection limit.

Abstract:In order to simplify the device configuration, reduce the cost, improve the instrument stability and anti-interference ability, a new type of double-line flow-injection ion-selective electrode method was proposed, and determination conditions of the method,, such as the carrier composition and flow rate, acidity adjusting liquid composition and flow rate, and reaction coil length were optimized. The method was successfully used in simultaneous determinations of K＋、Na＋、Cl-、Ca2＋ in serums. Linear ranges of the method were in 2.0 -24.0 mmol· L-l for K ＋ , 102-252 mmol · L-1 for Na ＋ , 20 -300 mmol · L-1 for C1- and 0.7 - 8.0 mmol · L-l for Ca2＋ , respectively. The relative standard deviation was less than 1.3% （n = 11 ） , the recoveries obtained by adding K＋、Na＋、Cl-、and Ca2＋ in serum samples were in range 96% - 104% , the analysis speed was 480 detections/h, and the consumption of the sample was only 45μL per time. These determination ranges were in normal ranges of human serum＇ s electrolyte concentrations.

Abstract:A new method for the rapid determination of trace-level sodium ion based on flow-injection analysis (FIA) and an ion selective electrode (ISE) is proposed. Various effects on the sensitivity of the method such as the flow rate and alkalinity of the carrier, sampling volume, temperature, length of reaction coil, length and thickness of alkalization tube, concentration of the alkalizing reagent etc. were investigated. The optimum conditions were ascertained. The method showed good linearity in the concentration ranges of 0.5-10 μg L−1 and 10-100 μg L−1, and could deal with 40-50 samples per hour. The consumption of the sample is only 0.80 mL per time. The relative standard deviation was 0.55%, and the recovery range was 98-103%. By designing a hermetically sealed single-line FIA-ISE manifold, a problem removing the interference of sodium ion from air could be solved, and automatic alkalization of the sample was realized. This method has been used for successfully determining the trace-level sodium ions in the water-steam system at fossil power plants

Abstract:Based on virtual instrument technology,the flow injection analysis system used for determination of anionic surfactant in water was established.The results show that when double distilled water is used as carrier stream,the pump speed was 30 r/min the sampling volume was 260 μL and the length of disperse coil was 20 cm,the potential signal is stable.The linear range for the electrode is 1×10-6 ～1×10-3 mol/L,in which the electrode has a good Nernst response,and the detection limit is 4×10-7 mol/L.After amplification of the potential signal for 5 times,the response slope is 0.2806 V/dec,and the electrode has good stability and interference immunity.The spiked average recovery is 96.8%.

Abstract:Combining flow-injection analysis with ion selective electrode method, a quick determination method of trace-level sodium ion in water-steam cycle of thermal power plant is put forward. By using this method, on-line automatic basification, the measurement and automatic cleaning of electrode under totally sealed state can be accomplished; the measurement ranges 0.6～10 μg/L and 20～100 μg/L.The analysis speed of this method is 40～50 samples/h, consumption of sample is 0.3 mL/time. this method has been used successfully to determine the trace-level Na~+ in the boiler water-steam of thermal power plant. Based upon this method a new type totally automatic trace-level Na~+ measuring device can be developed.

Abstract:The Iodine-Sulphur thermo-chemical water-splitting process is considered as one of the most promising way of massive hydrogen production.For monitoring and controlling the process conditions or carrying out relative kinetics study,it is essential to determine the concentration of I-online.A flow injection analysis system with I-ionic selective electrode(ISE) as a detector was designed and constructed.The main factors influencing the electrode performance,such as temperature and ionic strength were studied,and the operational parameters including carrier flow rate and injection volume were optimized.The performance of the device was evaluated,the results show that the detection limit for iodine ion is about 2mg/L,and the sampling rate reaches at least 40/h,or 60/h for lower concentration samples.Therefore,the device could meet the demand for online determination of I-.In addition,the device may be used to online determine the concentration of H+ in the range of 0.1-2mol/L.
Flow injection analysis with amperometric detection for iodide determination as a tracer in seawater reservoirs

Abstract:In this study, an electrochemical method was developed using flow injection analysis and amperometric detection with screen-printed electrodes for iodide determination as a tracer in seawater reservoirs. The amperometric method resulted in a good linear correlation coefficient (r = 0.9966) with a linear response over a concentration range of 1–10 mg L−1, a limit of detection of 0.2 mg L−1 and a quantification of 0.6 mg L−1. In addition, the method has been shown to be precise, linear and homoscedastic. The recovery for the amperometric method was 100 ± 3 %, and the recovery for the produced water samples fortified with iodide was 102 ± 2 %. The amperometric method did not show interference from other anions. Thus, the proposed method is promising for analysing the iodide content of seawater reservoir samples with simple and inexpensive methodologies compared with ion chromatography techniques.

Abstract:In the present study, ICP-MS with a new hybrid simultaneous preconcentration combining solid phase extraction using chelating resin and iron hydroxide coprecipitation in one batch at a single pH adjustment (pH 6.0) were developed for multielement determination of trace metal ions in seawater. In multielement determination, the present method makes it possible to determine Cr(III), As(V), Se (IV), and other 14 trace metal elements (Ti, V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Ge, Cd, Sb, Sn, W, Pb, and U) in seawater. Moreover, for speciation analyses of Cr, As, and Se, the pH dependence on recovery for the different chemical forms of Cr, As, and Se was investigated. In speciation analyses, Cr, As, and Se were determined as the total of Cr (III) and a part of Cr (VI), total of As (III) and As (V), and Se(IV), respectively. Determination of total of Se and Cr(VI) remains as future task to improve. Nevertheless, the present method would have possibility to develop as the analytical method to determine comprehensively most metal elements in all standard and guideline values in quality standard in environmental water in Japan, that is, most toxic metal elements in environmental water.

Abstract:A method for simultaneous determination of Li+,Na+,K+,NH4+,Rb+,Cs+,Mg2+,Ca2+,Sr2+in brines by ion chromatography was established.Metrosep C6-150 cation chromatographic column was used which was eluted by 4 mmol·L-1 HNO3.With the flow rate of 0.9 mL·min-1,and the column temperature of 45 ℃.The mass concentration of nine cations had a good linear relationship with the chromatographic peak area in the range of 0.10-100.00 mg·L-1,the correlation coefficients were all more than 0.999 9.The detec-tion limits of the method were 0.002-0.087 mg·L-1,and the quantitation limits were 0.006-0.292 mg·L-1.The relative standard deviations of determination results were 0.20％-1.94％(n=10),and the recoveries of the standard addition were 98.05％-102.89％.The method has a simple sample pretreatment procedure and simple and a wide linear range,which is suitable for rapid determination of cations in brines.

Abstract:Flow injection analysis combined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry was adopted for determination of calcium and magnesium in natural water.The influence of carrier gas pressure and sample exposure time on the analytical signal was investigated.The dispersion coefficients of calcium and magnesium were estimated by comparison with continuously pneumatic feed.This method can be used for determining high calcium and magnesium content of natural water not to be diluted.Five different kinds of samples were analyzed and the results were identical with that of EDTA titration.

Abstract:A flow injection analysis system (FIA) for the simultaneous determination of salinity, carbonate and ammoniacal nitrogen has been developed and reported in this paper. FIA incorporating membrane units was used, not only for the separation of the gaseous carbon dioxide and ammonia, but also for on-line dilution in the salinity measurement. The sample was injected via a 10-port valve with two sample loops. One loop was used for salinity and carbonate measurements and the second loop for ammoniacal nitrogen determination. A dual-channel capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector was assembled in a single shielding box. Input voltage from the same AC power supply was fed to the input electrodes of both C4D cells. One channel of the C4D was used to monitor the change in conductivity of an acceptor stream that carried a zone of the water sample that has passed through the on-line dilution unit. Conductivity of this zone relates directly to the salinity of the sample. The same sample zone was next acidified to generate carbon dioxide gas that diffused through a hydrophobic membrane of the first gas diffusion (GD) unit. The zone of dissolved carbon dioxide in acceptor stream of water flowed into the same C4D cell as for the salinity measurement, but arriving at a later time. Concurrently, the second channel of the C4D monitored the change in conductivity of the acceptor stream in the second GD unit due to the diffusion of ammonia gas generated by the reaction of base with the sample injected from the second sample loop. The change in conductivity at this second C4D cell correlates with the concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen present in the sample. The proposed method is low cost, simple, rapid and sensitive. The limit of quantitation for salinity, carbonate and ammoniacal nitrogen are 0.31mmolL-1, 1.85 µmol L-1, respectively. Throughput of 20 samples h-1 for simultaneous analysis can be achieved with RSD of less than 3.8%. The system had been applied to the determination of salinity, carbonate and ammoniacal nitrogen in 15 water samples, with results in agreement with those obtained using comparison methods.

Abstract:Simultaneous determination of caustic soda, sodium carbonate, and total soda in sodium aluminate solutions is realized by flow injection titration with a mixture of methyl orange and phenolphthalein as the corresponding indicators for the determination of caustic soda, sodium carbonate and total soda. Sulfosalicylic acid, the carrier, is both the titrant and complexing agent for aluminum. The method can be used for the the analysis of the sample containing caustic soda, sodium carbonate and total soda in the range of 6.2 similar to 30.9 g/L and 3.1 similar to 15.5 g/L (expressed as Na2O) with a sampling frequency of 30 samples per hour. A relative standard deviation of 0.5% is obtained for 11 determinations of a typical sample containing 21.94 g/L of sodium oxide.
