Abstract:With the analysis on regulating system in 200 MW steam turbine, the necessity of appending the fast-opening function to the original system is set forth and a new type of fast-opening mechanism is devised. The mathematical model of system is built up. With the use of AMESIM software, the displacement curve of the piston, the force curve of the cartridge valve spool, the pressure curve and the flux curve in the regulation process are obtained based on simulation. The performances of three fast-opening systems composed of cartridge valves with different diameters are compared. Based on the analysis on factors that affect the execution time of fast-opening, the dead zone of the fast-opening system is put forward. To overcome the defect, different operation modes are adopted for different zones. The result shows that with the increase of the valve diameter, the regulating time in the dead zone significantly exceeds the fast-opening time in the whole journey. Accordingly, the optimization operation tactic in the dead zone and the qualification conditions are brought forward. The fast-opening system composed of 32 mm cartridge valves is taken as an example with use of the tactic. The simulation result shows that the maximum regulating time is shortened by 509 ms.

Abstract:This article describes the three factors causing the change in the gaps between moving and stationary parts of a YL-type flue gas turbine during the installation and operation of the expander.The three factors are the recheck of alignments for the flue gas turbine,the equipment warming up and the deformation of equipment body shell due to extra stress.The article puts forth some compensation and preventative mea-sures based on calculations and base case studies,which are very helpful to those who are conducting onsite installation and servicing of flue gas turbines.

Improving Gas Turbine Performance Through Reassembling Degraded Components: An Experimental and Computational Study

Abstract:Abstract Performance degradation of gas turbine is a common phenomenon during operation. Maintenance of the degraded gas turbines and improving their performance at a low cost are important in engineering. In this paper, the maintenance method based on reassembling degraded components of existing gas turbines was studied. This research was based on a type of 2MW gas turbine engine. Blue ray scanning was carried out to rebuild the 3D flow-path geometries of the compressor and turbine of a degraded engine. Then CFD simulations were carried out to compare the characteristic maps of new and degraded components. Secondly, performance tests of six engines were carried out. A correction method was developed to get the specific component characteristics using test data, which can also analyze and quantify the degradations. Also, a gas turbine performance prediction program was used to find the promising component-exchange plan within 5 given gas turbines to improve total thermal efficiency. Finally, additional test was carried out to verify the performance of the reassembled gas turbine. Through the developed method including 3D scanning, CFD simulation, and correction of component characteristics with engine test data, the component performance degradation of a specific gas turbine can be obtained in quantity. The gas turbine performance predictions based on the acquired characteristic maps showed good agreement with test data. With the help of the method developed in this work, a new gas turbine engine was obtained through exchanging the components of degraded engines, which is at a very low cost and in a short time. The improvement in total thermal efficiency was about 0.3 percentage, which was verified by engine tests.

Abstract:The causes of the mechanical seal leak between axis and nacelle in marine current turbine prototype were presented.The contact method of finite element analysis in ANSYS was introduced to calculate the seal distortion which is caused by the axial forces and radial forces.The simulation result was compared with the theoretical result.The results show that the leak caused by the distortion relates to the circumference pressure.The improved seal structure and floating seals were given for underwater turbines.

Abstract:Abstract The higher firing temperature reflects the higher efficiency of the gas turbine. However, using higher temperatures is limited as it may cause a rupture, bending, or failure of the turbine blades. Hence, the development of an effective internal cooling system of the gas turbine blade is essential. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure the lowest possible penalty on the thermodynamics performance cycle. Researchers are working over the years to find out the efficient cooling channel design with high transfer while the lowest pressure drop. They ran several cases both numerically and experimentally. This paper reviews the published research in the various methods of gas turbine internal cooling, such as using rib turbulators, dimples, jet impingement, pin fins, and guide vane, of the gas turbine blade.

Abstract:Hydrogen-fuelled heavy-duty gas turbine is an important trend of gas turbine due to its low emission characteristics. Due to the change of components and thermodynamic properties of the fuel, the physical properties of the working fluid of the turbine will change and affect the performance of the gas turbine. In this study, through 3D scanning and inverse modelling, the parametric models of the turbine blades were obtained. CFD analysis was conducted to analyse the change of thermodynamic performance and flow field under different fuel, which is natural gas, 50% natural gas and 50% hydrogen and hydrogen. The result of the CFD indicated that the efficiency of natural gas fuelled working flux is 92.86%, and decreased by 0.19% and 0.83% with hydrogen doped in. It is analysed that though the increased magnitude of relative velocity with hydrogen doped in, the increased flow attack angle of the rotor, from -4.74°, to -3,61°, to -1.88° with hydrogen doped in, caused the split of rotor leading edge cooling air and decreased the efficiency of the turbine stage. Modification of blade metal angle could boost the efficiency of the turbine stage under hydrogen-doped fuel.
Hydraulic performance optimization of bidirectional tidal power turbine

Abstract:According to the recorded operation data in Jiangxia experimental tidal power station, the relation between the tidal level and the reservoir area water head was analyzed, and the change pattern of the tidal level with the operating parameters was then concluded. The hydraulic characteristics of the bidirectional bulb turbine under multiple operating conditions were investigated by 3D numerical simulation. Based on this, optimization design of a new bidirectional bulb turbine with the fixed flow passage size, including parameters (diameter ratio of runner to bulb, guide vane angle and guide vane/runner blade shape) redesign, was conducted. Key achievement of model units after model acceptance test was also available. The new type unit in Jiangxia tidal power station, unit 6#, in which the research outcome has been directly utilized, achieved stable operating for both forward and reversed generation, pumping and draw off. Moreover, comparing with other units equipped, there is an over 6% efficiency increase for both forward and reversed generation. Besides, turbine general performance has also been improved.

Abstract:This study describes the theoretical and experimental analysis of an MW-level three-shaft gas turbine. A thermodynamic-cycle calculation method of a three-shaft gas turbine with a hybrid cooling model is developed. Certain test data from the real engine, such as power output, fuel flow rate, overall efficiency, power turbine inlet and outlet temperatures, rotational speeds of the gas generator high-pressure shaft and low-pressure shaft and air flow rate, are obtained via experimental research. The empirical parameters in the proposed calculation method and the cooling model are revised via comparison between the calculated results and the test data. The effectiveness of the thermodynamic cycle performance analysis method of the three-shaft gas turbine and the cooling model is also verified.Based on the calculation method, further investigation of the characteristics of the gas turbine is performed on a wide load range when the power turbine operates at a fixed physical speed. The results show that a variable-angle nozzle significantly affects the performance of the gas turbine. The surge margin of the low-pressure compressor is also shown to be particularly important when the gas turbine operates at a high gas temperature with a more open variable-angle nozzle; also, due to the limitations imposed by the temperature control line, the high-pressure compressor always have an adequate surge margin. Throughout the operation range, the low-pressure and high-pressure turbines have high isentropic efficiencies; however, opening or closing the nozzle would decrease the isentropic efficiency of the power turbine compared with the ideal design condition. When the power output is constant, closing the nozzle causes the turbine inlet temperature to increase, thus increasing the efficiency of the gas turbine. Therefore, the optimal operating line under a wide range of loads is obtained by combining the adjustment of the variable-angle nozzle and the gas temperature. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:ObjectivesIn order to provide technical reference and design basis for the research and subsequent upgrade of China’s independent heavy-duty gas turbine, a series of upgrade measures of SGT5-4000F gas turbine were analyzed.MethodsThrough the collection, organization and performance analysis of relevant literature and data on the SGT5-4000F gas turbine, a series of upgrade measures taken by Siemens to improve the performance of the gas turbine have been summarized since it was introduced to the market in 1996.ResultsThrough the analysis, it can be concluded that Siemens’ upgrade measures include: increasing compressor mass flow, reducing the cooling air and adopting HCO to improve the power and thermal efficiency. The use of premixed pilot and optimization of the main swirler helps to improve the thermo-acoustic stability and reduce NOx emission. The validated new materials and new casting technologies can be used to improve the durability, life and operational flexibility.ConclusionsThe above technical upgrade measures can be used as technical reference and design basis for future improvement and upgrade of China’s independent heavy-duty gas turbine and its derivative models.

Abstract:The turbine end support is of great significance in designing the shafting system of the heavy-duty gas turbine. The thermal adaptive alignment mechanism of the tangential support is investigated based on the fluid-solid coupling finite element method. 3-dimensional models of the tangential struts,diffuser cones, hot gas and cooling air are established through Pro/Engineering software. Then by defining the fluid-solid interfaces, a CFD analysis is carried out considering both the structural characteristics of support and the properties of fluids. With the calculated solid temperature field provided as thermal loads, a structural analysis is presented to obtain the thermal deformation and stress distributions of the tangential support through ANSYS software. 8 testing points on the support are selected to monitor deformations. By comparison, the results show that thermal deformations of the support are automatically eliminated though mandatory rotating on the bearing house imposed by the tangential plates, thus decrease the deviation of the center and achieve the adaptive alignment at thermal state. This is a very fundamental study on the optimization design and experiment of the support of gas turbine.

Abstract:Numerical investigation on the turbine performance of a turbo-shaft engine is carried out under various working conditions.It shows that the numerical results agree well with the experimental measured data.To study the effects of the guide vanes,limiting streamline and topology of the internal flow fields are analyzed based on the numerical results.It is found that the overall performance of the turbine including efficiency and flow rate varies little by comparing with that in absence of the guide vanes.Optimization is then conducted finally by replacing the guide vanes with the free power turbine stator blades and optimizing the meridional flow path.The results reveal that,after optimization,the performance is improved with less weight and higher power output.
Dealing with problem of over-limit temperature of thrust bearing pad in scooptype water-turbine generator set at Yele Hydropower Plant

Abstract:That the temperature of thrust bearing pad exceeds the alarm temperature designed for unit No.1 at Yele Hydropower Plant impedes the normal operation of the unit.Shutdown analysis shows that nonuniform stress distribution in the bearing pad,the poor heat exchange,the inherent drawback of the cooling system,etc.are the main causes.Some measures are taken to deal with the above problems,including adding of 12 pores with the diameter of 40?mm on the bearing pad to make the oil stream flow more smoothly and rapidly and to increase the amount of heat exchange;canceling of casing tube in cooling apparatus to make the heat exchange between oil and water more sufficiently;adding of 6 coolers and a set of pipeline for water supply and discharge at the symmetrical side of the original pipes.Through the adoption of the measures and reformation of the device,the temperature of the bearing pad returns to its normal value,and the safe and stable operation of the unit is realized.

Abstract:This study presents an in-depth analysis and optimization of the exhaust ejector system for a marine gas turbine enclosure. Key performance indicators, including entrainment ratio, total pressure loss, velocity and temperature non-uniformity, and starter temperature, are evaluated. Five critical parameters are identified as pivotal to the performance of the ejector system: ejector height, outlet diameter, diffuser radius, mixing tube inclination, and eccentricity. Sensitivity analysis and single-factor analysis methods are utilized to explore the impact of these parameters on the system's evaluation indices. To address the interplay and complex matching of parameters, an orthogonal experimental design is combined with a genetic aggregation method for prediction and sample pool expansion. The CRITIC method is then applied for weight analysis and optimization, leading to the determination of an optimal exhaust ejector structure, which is validated for reliability. The optimized structure achieves a 10.189 % increase in entrainment ratio with a 227.342 Pa total pressure loss, reduces velocity and temperature non-uniformity at the mixing tube exit, and lowers the starter surface's highest temperature by 24.995 K. The study's findings contribute to the enhancement of gas turbine enclosure cooling systems, offering practical solutions for improved thermal management and efficiency in marine applications.

Abstract:In a high head pumped storage power plant with 9 blades and 20 guide vanes, vibration and noise problems occurred with characteristic frequency of 2 times the blade passing frequency (BPF). It is found that the first main frequency of pressure pulsation in the vaneless zone is also 2BPF with a two-nodal diameter mode by using three dimensional unsteady numerical method, which indicates that the main cause of vibration and noise is rotor stator interaction (RSI). By increasing the radial gap of the vaneless zone, the amplitude of pressure pulsation in the vaneless zone is reduced by 40%-50% according numerical results. One unit in the power station was refurbished. It was shown that the pressure pulsation in the vaneless zone was reduced by 40%, and the head cover vibration was also reduced, and the noise in the turbine pit was reduced by 6 dB according the field test results. So the numerical analysis and prediction here are very accurate, and the vibration and noise problems of this power station are caused by RSI.

Abstract:In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to research on variable geometry turbine engines with the increasing requirement of engine performance. Variable geometry turbine technology can significantly improve the operating performance of aero engines. Adjusting the working angle of the turbine guide vane can change the thermodynamic cycle of the engine operation, so that the turbine can respond to different engine operating conditions. Variable geometry turbines work in harsh environments. Therefore, the design of the variable geometry turbine needs to consider the effect of thermal deformations of the mechanism on operational stability. There are few research studies on variable geometry turbine adjusting mechanisms. This paper established the numerical calculation models of two adjusting mechanisms by integrating fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and dynamic theories, which are paddle and push–pull rod mechanisms. The models were applied to study the effects of components’ thermal deformations and flexible bodies on the motion characteristics of the adjusting mechanism. Furthermore, the performance of the two adjusting mechanisms was compared. The calculation results show that the paddle rod adjusting mechanism can accurately adjust the angles of guide vanes. The paddle rod adjusting mechanism has a larger driving stroke and smaller driving force than the push–pull rod adjusting mechanism. The paddle adjustment mechanism was better suited to the operational requirements of the variable geometry turbine. The research results of this paper are relevant to the design of variable geometry turbine regulation structures.
