Abstract:We present the first English translation of Einstein's original papers related to the teleparallel ('absolute parallelism', 'distant parallelism' and the German 'Fernparallelismus' are synonyms) attempt of an unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. Our collection contains the summarizing paper in Math. Annal. 102 (1930) pp. 685-697 and 2 reports published in 'Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften' on June 7th, 1928 (pp. 217-221), June 14th, 1928 (pp. 224-227) and a precursor report (July 9th, 1925 pp. 414-419). To ease understanding, literature on tensor analysis is quoted in the footnotes.

Abstract:Fidelity is not a new topic in translation studies,but all the past discussions are based on other translations in which the author and the translator are two persons.What if the same person acts as both the author and the translator? This paper tries to rethink fidelity from the perspective of hermeneutics and reception aesthetics by discussing the two basic steps in the translating process and taking Lin Yutang's translation theory and self-translations as examples.

Abstract:In his bookThe Experience of the Foreign: Culture and Translation in Romantic Germanythat focuses on the German culturalprocess before and after the nineteenth century, Antoine Berman carries out a historical “archaeology” on the origins, developments and tendencies of German translation activities and theories since Luther. His analyses and conclusive statements on some fundamental issues in translation eventually lead to his definition of translation as “the experience of the foreign”. This paper, starting from the implicit logic of Berman’s translation thoughts, attempts to clarify certain misunderstandings related to the interpretation and understanding of Berman’s theories that still exist in the current academic translation circle in the perspective of text analysis and “interpretants”.

Abstract:In the first volume of Elementary Mathematics from a Higher Standpoint: Arithmetic, Algebra and Analysis, Klein closely adheres to several principles which contribute a great deal to the understanding of Klein’s higher standpoint—such as the principle of mathematical interconnectedness, the principle of intuition, the principle of application-orientation, and the genetic method of teaching. In addition, Klein conveys not only a mathematical but also a historical and a didactical perspective, all of which broaden this standpoint. This versatile approach to the mathematical content will be illustrated in this article by taking a closer look at the chapter on logarithmic and exponential functions.

Abstract:The present is a companion paper to "A contemporary look at Hermann Hankel's 1861 pioneering work on Lagrangian fluid dynamics" by Frisch, Grimberg and Villone (2017). Here we present the English translation of the 1861 prize manuscript from Göttingen University "Zur allgemeinen Theorie der Bewegung der Flüssigkeiten" (On the general theory of the motion of the fluids) of Hermann Hankel (1839-1873), which was originally submitted in Latin and then translated into German by the Author for publication. We also provide the English translation of two important reports on the manuscript, one written by Bernhard Riemann and the other by Wilhelm Eduard Weber, during the assessment process for the prize. Finally we give a short biography of Hermann Hankel with his complete bibliography.

Abstract:An alleged opposition between David Hilbert and Felix Klein as modern vs countermodern has been pursued by marxist historian Herbert Mehrtens and others. Scholars such as Epple, Grattan-Guinness, Gray, Quinn, Rowe, and recently Siegmund-Schultze and Mazzotti have voiced a range of opinions concerning Mehrtens' dialectical methodology. We explore contrasting perspectives on Klein's contested modernism, as well as Hilbert's and Klein's views on intuition, logic, and physics. We analyze Jeremy Gray's comment on Klein's ethnographic speculations concerning Jewish mathematicians and find it to be untenable. We argue that Mehrtens was looking for countermoderns at the wrong address.
