Abstract:This is an adapatation by U. Frisch of an English translation by Thomas E. Burton of Euler's memoir `Principes généraux du mouvement des fluides' (Euler, 1775b). Burton's translation appeared in Fluid Dynamics, 34} (1999) pp. 801-82, Springer and is here adapted by permission. A detailed presentation of Euler's published work can be found in Truesdell, 1954. Euler's work is discussed also in the perspective of eighteenth century fluid dynamics research by Darrigol and Frisch, 2008. Explanatory footnotes have been supplied where necessary by G.K. Mikhailov and a few more by U. Frisch and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://O.Darrigol" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. Euler's memoir had neither footnotes nor a list of references.

Abstract:This document gathers the notes of a 30-hour review course on gravitation, which I delivered in January 2018 and January 2019 at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences of Cameroon (AIMS-Cameroon). Its main goal is to propose a big picture of gravitation, where Einstein's relativity arises as a natural increment to Newton's theory. It is designed for bachelor/master students who do not necessarily have prior knowledge about relativity. The students are nevertheless expected to be familiar with the fundamentals of Newton's mechanics and gravitation, for the first chapter to be a mere reformulation of known concepts. The second chapter then introduces special and general relativity at the same time, while the third chapter explores concrete manifestations of relativistic gravitation, notably gravitational waves and black holes. Each section corresponds, on average, to slightly more than a 2-hour black-board lecture. The numerous exercises must be considered part of the course itself; they are intended to stimulate active reading.

Abstract:The present is a companion paper to "A contemporary look at Hermann Hankel's 1861 pioneering work on Lagrangian fluid dynamics" by Frisch, Grimberg and Villone (2017). Here we present the English translation of the 1861 prize manuscript from Göttingen University "Zur allgemeinen Theorie der Bewegung der Flüssigkeiten" (On the general theory of the motion of the fluids) of Hermann Hankel (1839-1873), which was originally submitted in Latin and then translated into German by the Author for publication. We also provide the English translation of two important reports on the manuscript, one written by Bernhard Riemann and the other by Wilhelm Eduard Weber, during the assessment process for the prize. Finally we give a short biography of Hermann Hankel with his complete bibliography.

Abstract:In 1942, Prof. Mitio Nagumo published his seminal paper on the location of integral curves of ordinary differential equations. Nagumo's paper provides the foundation of the set invariance of ordinary differential equations and barrier functions, which have recently gained popularity for the control design of safety critical dynamical systems. This translation shall serve the community with an easily accessible version of the original 1942 paper in English. A copy of Nagumo's paper in German is also attached as a reference. That copy was created by the Boeing Company, Germany, in an attempt to improve pdf format readability of the original paper.

Abstract:Here we provide a complete English translation of Walter Gröbli's 1877 Ph.D. Thesis, together with some notes on the process. The work considers the dynamics of point vortices in a two-dimensional inviscid incompressible fluid and derives a number of exact solutions in the cases of three, four and $2n$ vortices with certain restriction on the vortices' circulation and the symmetry of the initial configuration.

Abstract:The translator is the subject of translation, serving as a medium for cultural exchange and communication. However, translators in the external dissemination of Chinese culture have long been neglected and marginalized. With the “cultural turn” in translation studies, translators have gained due attention. As one of the representative works of Confucianism, Mencius is an important part of traditional Chinese culture, but its foreign translation is later than the Analects of Confucius and other classics, which also reflects the problem of scholars’ insufficient investment in its research. This paper makes a comparative analysis of how the English translation of the core concepts of Mencius by James Legge, Derk Bodde and D.C. LAU reflects the translator’s subjectivity, and in turn how the translator’s subjectivity affects their translation strategy, in order to make a contribution to the foreign translation of classics.

Abstract:THIS readable and trustworthy translation will be welcome to those who cannot enjoy the original, the merits of which are by this time well known. The typography is unusually good, and is very creditable to all concerned, such symbols as the square of a1, or even of a′, being printed in a satisfactory way, which English printers might imitate with advantage. There are a few terms here and there which are ungrateful to an English ear; “involutionary” or “involutional” would be more agreeable to analogy than “involutory,” and “nappe” is retained instead of being rendered by “sheet.” But these are trifles, and those of us who have no French can now study a treatise which is eminently lucid and attractive, as well as being up to date and sufficiently rigorous for the purpose it is designed to fulfil.

Abstract:(revised) This is a textbook on classical mechanics at the intermediate level, but its main purpose is to serve as an introduction to a new mathematical language for physics called geometric algebra. Mechanics is most commonly formulated today in terms of the vector algebra developed by the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs, but for some applications of mechanics the algebra of complex numbers is more efficient than vector algebra, while in other applications matrix algebra works better. Geometric algebra integrates all these algebraic systems into a coherent mathematical language which not only retains the advantages of each special algebra but possesses powerful new capabilities. This book covers the fairly standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies. However, it will be seen that geometric algebra brings new insights into the treatment of nearly every topic and produces simplifications that move the subject quickly to advanced levels. That has made it possible in this book to carry the treatment of two major topics in mechanics well beyond the level of other textbooks. A few words are in order about the unique treatment of these two topics, namely, rotational dynamics and celestial mechanics.

The title of the course is "Curve algebriche piane e sghembe" ("Plane and space algebraic curves"): indeed, the language of both the original text and our brief introduction is Italian. The manuscript belongs to the legacy of Alfredo Franchetta (1916-2011) and the typesetting is due to Natascia Zangani. This edition is our modest contribution to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Guido Castelnuovo (1865-1952).
