Abstract:We introduce general translations as solutions to Cauchy or Dirichlet problems. This point of view allows us to handle the heat-diffusion semigroup as a translation. With the given examples Kolmogorov-Riesz characterization of compact sets in certain $L^p_\mu$ spaces are given. Pego-type characterizations are also derived. Finally for some examples the equivalence of the corresponding modulus of smoothness and K-functional is pointed out.

Abstract:We translated the paper 'On the five-fold transitive function of 24 quantities' by Émile Mathieu into English. This was done to aid our project on expressing $M_{23}$ as additive functions on the finite field of $2_{11}$ elements.

Abstract:This is the translation to appear in the "SUPERSYMMETRY 2000 - Encyclopaedic Dictionary" of the original paper, published in March 1980, (C.R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. A-B, 290, 1980) in which basic notions of noncommutative geometry were introduced and applied to noncommutative tori. These include connections on finite projective modules, their curvature, and the Chern character. Finite projective modules on the noncommutative two-torus $ \Tb^2_{\theta}$ were realized as Schwartz spaces of vector valued functions on $\Rb$. Explicit constant curvature connections were constructed and a basic integrality phenomenon of the total curvature was displayed. The pseudo-differential calculus and the Atiyah-Singer index theorems were extended to Lie group actions on $C^*$ algebras and used to explain the above integrality of the total curvature by an index formula for finite difference-differential operators on the line. Recent interest in the hep-th literature for basic notions of noncommutative geometry in the case of noncommutative tori (cf for instance <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0012145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0012145">hep-th/0012145</a> for an excellent review) prompted us to make the English translation of the original paper available.

Abstract:The paper is divided in 2 parts. The first part is the original paper of the second and third authors <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.5442v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.5442v2">arXiv:1202.5442v2</a>. The second part is an erratum/addendum written in english and concatenated at the end of the former paper. In the erratum/addentum, we amend Theorems 1.3 and 1.11 of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.5442v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.5442v2">arXiv:1202.5442v2</a>: Finitude géométrique en géométrie de Hilbert. We seize the opportunity to show that in round Hilbert geometry, geometrical finiteness (gf) is equivalent to cusp-uniform action and to fill some small gaps that appear in two other proofs of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.5442v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.5442v2">arXiv:1202.5442v2</a>.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a unified approach to a family of integrals of Mellin--Barnes type using distribution theory and Fourier transforms. Interesting features arise in many of the cases which call for the application of pull-backs of distributions via smooth submersive maps defined by Hörmander. We derive by this method the integrals of Hecke and Sonine relating to various types of Bessel functions which have found applications in analytic and algebraic number theory.

Abstract:THIS readable and trustworthy translation will be welcome to those who cannot enjoy the original, the merits of which are by this time well known. The typography is unusually good, and is very creditable to all concerned, such symbols as the square of a1, or even of a′, being printed in a satisfactory way, which English printers might imitate with advantage. There are a few terms here and there which are ungrateful to an English ear; “involutionary” or “involutional” would be more agreeable to analogy than “involutory,” and “nappe” is retained instead of being rendered by “sheet.” But these are trifles, and those of us who have no French can now study a treatise which is eminently lucid and attractive, as well as being up to date and sufficiently rigorous for the purpose it is designed to fulfil.

Abstract:Annotated parallel text in Latin and English of the paper of Adam Adamandy Kochański "Solutio Theorematum Ab illustri Viro in Actis hujus Anni Mense Januario, pag. 28. propositorum", Acta Eruditorum, Lipsiae 1682, pp. 230-236, in which he presented solutions of two geometric problems proposed by an anonymous author in the same journal in January 1682. The Latin text of "Solutio theorematum" presented here closely follows the original text published in "Acta Eruditorum". Punctuation, capitalization, and mathematical notation have been preserved. Several misprints which appeared in the original are also reproduced unchanged, but with a footnote indicating correction. Every effort has been made to preserve the layout of original tables. The translation is as faithful as possible, often literal, and it is mainly intended to be of help to those who wish to study the original Latin text. In the appendix, all propositions from Euclid's "Elements" mentioned in the text are listed in both Latin and English.

Abstract:This is an English translation of Anders Wiman's classical paper "Über die Anwendung der Tschirnhausen Transformation auf die Reduktion algebraischer Gleichungen" from 1927. The original work first appeared in the 1927 extraordinary edition of Nova Acta Regiae Societatis Scientiarum Upsaliensis. In this paper, Wiman gives an argument that the general polynomial of degree nine can be solved using one algebraic function of four variables and accessory irrationalities of degree at most five. However, his argument assumes certain intersections in affine space are generic without proof.

Abstract:Euler wrote several papers on Astronomy, most of them in Latin. This is a commented translation of E304 'Considerationes de motu corporum coelestium' (Considerations on the motion of celestial bodies). In this publication, Euler essentially focuses on the solution of two particular motions of a three-body problem consisting of Sun, Earth and Moon. The first motion, represents a hypothetical situation of these three celestial bodies in perpetual alignment in syzygy - the three-body problem on a straight line -, for which the parameter that controls the distances among the planets was found to be given by a quintic function. The conclusion was that if the Moon were four times more distant from the Earth (either in conjunction or in opposition), a motion of this kind would have been possible to exist, such that the Moon would appear always connected to the Sun. The second motion considered by Euler was Moon libration, when these planets are aligned in regular syzygy. Here, perhaps for the first time, Euler introduces an archaic form of a Fourier sine series expansion to describe the Moon's wagging motion. However, as Euler himself recognizes, the calculations turned out very tedious, and led him to greatly simplify his model in order to obtain some numerical values for the phenomenon.

In the present article, I share with the reader my experience of applying the methods described in the previous article in order to solve a particular problem from number theory (G. Almkvist, J. Petersson and the author, Experiment. Math. 12 (2003), 441-456). Moreover, I add a list of determinant evaluations which I consider as interesting, which have been found since the appearance of the previous article, or which I failed to mention there, including several conjectures and open problems.
