Abstract:This is in some sense an addendum to the book Relational Mathematics by the first-named author. It originated from work on diverse other topics during which a lot of purely relational results with broad applicability have been produced. These include results on domain construction with novel formulae for existential and inverse image, a relational calculus for binary mappings, and the development of a formally derived relational calculus of Kronecker-, strict fork-, and strict join-operators. The many visualizations in this report make it also a scrap- and picture book for examples.

Abstract:Recently, the author discovered an interesting class of knot-like objects called free knots. These purely combinatorial objects are equivalence classes of Gauss diagrams modulo Reidemeister moves (the same notion in the language of words was introduced by Turaev, who thought all free knots to be trivial). As it turned out, these new objects are highly non-trivial, and even admit non-trivial cobordism classes. An important issue is the existence of invariants where a diagram evaluates to itself which makes such objects "similar" to free groups: an element has its minimal representative which "lives inside" any representative equivalent to it.

Abstract:Originally published in different journals and collected volumes, these papers in conceptual analysis cover some central topics in translation theory and research: types of theory and hypothesis; causality and explanation; norms, strategies and so-called universals; translation sociology, and ethics. There are critical reviews of Catford’s theory, and of Skopos theory, and of Kundera’s views on literary translation, and detailed analyses of the literal translation hypothesis and the unique items hypothesis. The methodological discussions, which draw on work in the philosophy of science, will be of special relevance to younger researchers, for example those starting work on a doctorate. Some of the arguments and positions defended – for instance on the significant status of conceptual, interpretive hypotheses, and the ideal of consilience – relate to wider ongoing debates, and will interest any scholar who is concerned about the increasing fragmentation of the field and about the future of Translation Studies. Let the dialogue continue!

Abstract:This is the translation to appear in the "SUPERSYMMETRY 2000 - Encyclopaedic Dictionary" of the original paper, published in March 1980, (C.R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. A-B, 290, 1980) in which basic notions of noncommutative geometry were introduced and applied to noncommutative tori. These include connections on finite projective modules, their curvature, and the Chern character. Finite projective modules on the noncommutative two-torus $ \Tb^2_{\theta}$ were realized as Schwartz spaces of vector valued functions on $\Rb$. Explicit constant curvature connections were constructed and a basic integrality phenomenon of the total curvature was displayed. The pseudo-differential calculus and the Atiyah-Singer index theorems were extended to Lie group actions on $C^*$ algebras and used to explain the above integrality of the total curvature by an index formula for finite difference-differential operators on the line. Recent interest in the hep-th literature for basic notions of noncommutative geometry in the case of noncommutative tori (cf for instance <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0012145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0012145">hep-th/0012145</a> for an excellent review) prompted us to make the English translation of the original paper available.

Abstract:This book collects the material delivered in the 2008 edition of the DocCourse in Combinatorics and Geometry which was devoted to the topic of additive combinatorics. The first two parts, which form the bulk of the volume, contain the two main advanced courses, Additive Group Theory and Non-Unique Factorizations by Alfred Geroldinger, and Sumsets and Structure by Imre Z. Ruzsa. The first part centers on the interaction between non-unique factorization theory and additive group theory. The main objective of factorization theory is a systematic treatment of phenomena related to the non-uniqueness of factorizations in monoids and domains. This part introduces basic concepts of factorization theory such as sets of lengths, and outlines the translation of arithmetical questions in Krull monoids into combinatorial questions on zero-sum sequences over the class group. Using methods from additive group theory such as the theorems of Kneser and of Kemperman-Scherk, classical zero-sum constants are studied, including the Davenport constant and the Erdös-Ginzburg-Ziv constant. Finally these results are applied again to the starting arithmetical problems. The second part is a course on the basics of combinatorial number theory (or additive combinatorics): cardinality inequalities (Plünnecke’s graph theoretical method), Freiman’s theorem on the structure of sets with a small sumset, inequalities for the Schnirelmann and asymptotic density of sumsets, analogous results for the measure of sumsets of reals, the connection with the Bohr topology. The third part of the volume collects some of the seminars which accompanied the main courses. It contains contributions by C. Elsholtz, G. Freiman, Y. O. Hamidoune, N. Hegyvari, G. Karolyi, M. Nathanson, J. Solymosi and Y. Stanchescu.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a [math]-adic Lie group with reductive Lie algebra [math]. In analogy to the translation functors introduced by Bernstein and Gelfand on the categories of [math]-modules, we consider similarly defined functors on the category of modules over the locally analytic distribution algebra [math] on which the center of [math] acts locally finitely. These functors induce equivalences between certain subcategories of the latter category. Furthermore, these translation functors are naturally related to those on category [math] via the functors from category [math] to the category of coadmissible modules. We also investigate the effect of the translation functors on locally analytic representations [math]la associated by the [math]-adic Langlands correspondence for [math] to two-dimensional Galois representations [math].

Abstract:THIS readable and trustworthy translation will be welcome to those who cannot enjoy the original, the merits of which are by this time well known. The typography is unusually good, and is very creditable to all concerned, such symbols as the square of a1, or even of a′, being printed in a satisfactory way, which English printers might imitate with advantage. There are a few terms here and there which are ungrateful to an English ear; “involutionary” or “involutional” would be more agreeable to analogy than “involutory,” and “nappe” is retained instead of being rendered by “sheet.” But these are trifles, and those of us who have no French can now study a treatise which is eminently lucid and attractive, as well as being up to date and sufficiently rigorous for the purpose it is designed to fulfil.

Abstract:The text type theory, proposed by the German translation theorist K.Reissand and the British translation theorist P.Newmark after classifying the sourcelanguage(SL)texts on the basis of the functions of language,not only supplies a series of translation methods that make the process of translation more concrete and thus more operable, but also offers a theory that makes the translation study, the translation methods and the translation criticism more scientific, standardized and specific. With the analysis of some of ChineseEnglish (CE) and EnglishChinese (EC) translation examples, the feasibility of the theory is illustrated and a certain significance of using the theory for reference is also found in solving many problematic disputes about the traditional CE and EC translation theory.

Abstract:This text arises from teaching advanced undergraduate courses in differential topology for the master curriculum in Mathematics at the University of Pisa. So it is mainly addressed to motivated and collaborative master undergraduate students, having nevertheless a limited mathematical background. Overall this text is a collection of themes, in some cases advanced and of historical importance, with the common feature that they can be treated with "bare hands". This means by just combining certain cut-and-paste procedures and applications of transversality, mainly through the multiplicative structure of the cobordism rings of every smooth compact manifold; topics developed from scratch along with the text.

Abstract:Several proof translations of classical mathematics into intuitionistic mathematics have been proposed in the literature over the past century. These are normally referred to as negative translations or double-negation translations. Among those, the most commonly cited are translations due to Kolmogorov, Godel, Gentzen, Kuroda and Krivine (in chronological order). In this paper we propose a framework for explaining how these different translations are related to each other. More precisely, we define a notion of a (modular) simplification starting from Kolmogorov translation, which leads to a partial order between different negative translations. In this derived ordering, Kuroda and Krivine are minimal elements. Two new minimal translations are introduced, with Godel and Gentzen translations sitting in between Kolmogorov and one of these new translations.

Abstract:This is an English translation of the monograph "Die Klassenk\"orper der komplexen Multiplikation" by Max Deuring, published in 1958 as Enzyklop\"adie der Mathematischen Wissenschaften, Band I-2, Heft 10, Teil II by B.G. Teuber Verlagsgesellschaft, Stuttgart. It gives a systematic exposition of the analytic method in the theory of complex multiplication -- the interrelations between elliptic functions, modular functions and algebraic numbers. This translation was done as an exercise for learning the German language. The mathematical notation and terminology are kept as closely as possible to those given in the German original work. No attempt has been made to modernize the exposition, other than rectifying a (very) few obviously-correctable typographical errors.

Abstract:Kuroda's translation embeds classical first-order logic into intuitionistic logic, through the insertion of double negations. Recently, Brown and Rizkallah extended this translation to higher-order logic. In this paper, we adapt it for theories encoded in higher-order logic in the lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory, a logical framework that extends lambda-calculus with dependent types and user-defined rewrite rules. We develop a tool that implements Kuroda's translation for proofs written in Dedukti, a proof language based on the lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory.
