Abstract:The present is a companion paper to "A contemporary look at Hermann Hankel's 1861 pioneering work on Lagrangian fluid dynamics" by Frisch, Grimberg and Villone (2017). Here we present the English translation of the 1861 prize manuscript from Göttingen University "Zur allgemeinen Theorie der Bewegung der Flüssigkeiten" (On the general theory of the motion of the fluids) of Hermann Hankel (1839-1873), which was originally submitted in Latin and then translated into German by the Author for publication. We also provide the English translation of two important reports on the manuscript, one written by Bernhard Riemann and the other by Wilhelm Eduard Weber, during the assessment process for the prize. Finally we give a short biography of Hermann Hankel with his complete bibliography.

Abstract:In his bookThe Experience of the Foreign: Culture and Translation in Romantic Germanythat focuses on the German culturalprocess before and after the nineteenth century, Antoine Berman carries out a historical “archaeology” on the origins, developments and tendencies of German translation activities and theories since Luther. His analyses and conclusive statements on some fundamental issues in translation eventually lead to his definition of translation as “the experience of the foreign”. This paper, starting from the implicit logic of Berman’s translation thoughts, attempts to clarify certain misunderstandings related to the interpretation and understanding of Berman’s theories that still exist in the current academic translation circle in the perspective of text analysis and “interpretants”.

Abstract:We present the first English translation of Einstein's original papers related to the teleparallel ('absolute parallelism', 'distant parallelism' and the German 'Fernparallelismus' are synonyms) attempt of an unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. Our collection contains the summarizing paper in Math. Annal. 102 (1930) pp. 685-697 and 2 reports published in 'Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften' on June 7th, 1928 (pp. 217-221), June 14th, 1928 (pp. 224-227) and a precursor report (July 9th, 1925 pp. 414-419). To ease understanding, literature on tensor analysis is quoted in the footnotes.

Abstract:To facilitate teaching of quantum mechanics on undergraduate and even advanced secondary school levels, we present an unabridged translation of the original German text of the famous Werner Heisenberg's breakthrough paper of 1925 into Czech language. While the paper introduces fundamentally new concepts into mechanics, and it contains a relatively large number of equations, its conceptual side is surprisingly lightweight when it comes to the use of advanced mathematics. The discussions contained in its Section 1 allow students of quantum mechanics to contemplate the reasons for the inadequacy of classical kinematic concepts in the micro-world. Understanding of the kinematic transition from real valued functions to complex valued "matrices", which is the central point of the paper, can be reached with relatively elementary mathematics. Translations of the Heisenberg's work into languages other than English provide a unique opportunity to introduce the great scientific concepts of quantum mechanics first hand to a broader audience of students who have yet to reach proficiency in the current scientific lingua franca. The present translation is equipped with footnotes explaining the notation, identifying several typos and pointing out sudden changes in notation in the original paper.

Abstract:This is an adapatation by U. Frisch of an English translation by Thomas E. Burton of Euler's memoir `Principes généraux du mouvement des fluides' (Euler, 1775b). Burton's translation appeared in Fluid Dynamics, 34} (1999) pp. 801-82, Springer and is here adapted by permission. A detailed presentation of Euler's published work can be found in Truesdell, 1954. Euler's work is discussed also in the perspective of eighteenth century fluid dynamics research by Darrigol and Frisch, 2008. Explanatory footnotes have been supplied where necessary by G.K. Mikhailov and a few more by U. Frisch and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://O.Darrigol" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. Euler's memoir had neither footnotes nor a list of references.

Abstract:The following translation of Leonhard Euler's "Examination of an Artifice for Propelling a Ship by the Principle of Internal Motion," originally published in 1750, offers a glimpse into a fascinating historical debate in the field of mechanics. This work critically examines a proposal by Jacob Bernoulli, one of the foremost mathematicians of the 17th century, who suggested that a ship could be propelled by forces entirely confined within the vessel itself-a concept that contradicts the principles of classical mechanics. This translation is intended to make Euler's insights accessible to a modern audience, highlighting the enduring relevance of these foundational principles. The commentary provided offers context and clarification, drawing parallels between Euler's work and contemporary understandings of mechanics. By examining the arguments of two of the greatest minds in the history of science, readers are invited to appreciate the depth and precision of classical mechanics as it was developed during the Enlightenment.

Abstract:During the ``long decade'' of transformation of mathematical physics between 1915 and 1930, H. Weyl interacted with physics in two highly productive phases and contributed to it, among others, by his widely read book on {\em Space - Time - Matter (Raum Zeit - Materie)} (1918 -- 1923) and on {\em Group Theory and Quantum Mechanics (Gruppentheorie und Quantenmechanik)} (1928 - 1931). In this time Weyl's understanding of the constitution of matter and its mathematical description changed considerably. At the beginning of the period he started from a "dynamistic" and geometrical conception of matter, following and extending the Mie-Hilbert approch, which he gave up during the year 1920. After transitional experiments with a singularity (and in this sense topological) approach in 1921/22, he developed an open perspective of what he called an ``agency theory'' of matter. The idea for it was formulated already before the advent of the ``new'' quantum mechanics in 1925/26. It turned out to be well suited to be taken over to the quantum view as a kind of ``heritage'' from the first half of the decade. At the end of the period, Weyl completely renounced his earlier belief in the possibility to ``construct matter'' from a geometrically unified field theory. He now posed the possibility of a geometrization of the mathematical forms underlying the rising quantum physical description of matter as a completely open problem for future research.

Abstract:This essay focuses on an unknown Latin translation of Georg Ernst Stahl's treatise on the nature of sulfur (Zufällige Gedancken und Nützliche Bedencken über den Streit von dem so genannten Sulfure). The original edition, published in 1718, laid the foundation for the phlogiston theory, which dominated European chemistry until the early 1770s. However, the dissemination of the treatise on sulfur outside the German states remained limited. Its Latin translation proposes a different scenario as it was owned by three prominent French chemists: Étienne-François Geoffroy, Jean Hellot and Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier. Geoffroy's early interest in Stahl's chemistry has been evidenced and it is suggested that the acquisition of the manuscript might be linked to his connection with Stahl through Caspar Neumann, a chemist from Berlin. When he entered in the possession of the manuscript Jean Hellot wrote a long excerpt of Stahl's work. Lavoisier acquired the manuscript in 1766, and his critical reading of Stahl's work significantly influenced his own effort to outline a new theory of combustion. This manuscript represents a significant historical connection between Stahl's phlogiston theory and Lavoisier's revolutionary ideas.

Abstract:Here we clarify the assumptions made and conclusions reached in our paper The thermodynamical cost of some interpretations of quantum [Phys. Rev. A 94, 052127 (2016)], at the light of the criticisms of Prunkl and Timpson [Stud. Hist. Philos. Sci. Part B 63, 114 (2018)], and Davidsson (Master thesis, Stockholm University, 2018). We point out some misunderstandings and some weaknesses of the counterexample Prunkl and Timpson present to challenge our conclusion. We thus conclude, once more, that interpretations of quantum theory which consider the probabilities of measurement outcomes to be determined by objective properties of the measured system and satisfy the assumption that the measured system only has finite memory have a thermodynamical cost.
