Abstract:In his bookThe Experience of the Foreign: Culture and Translation in Romantic Germanythat focuses on the German culturalprocess before and after the nineteenth century, Antoine Berman carries out a historical “archaeology” on the origins, developments and tendencies of German translation activities and theories since Luther. His analyses and conclusive statements on some fundamental issues in translation eventually lead to his definition of translation as “the experience of the foreign”. This paper, starting from the implicit logic of Berman’s translation thoughts, attempts to clarify certain misunderstandings related to the interpretation and understanding of Berman’s theories that still exist in the current academic translation circle in the perspective of text analysis and “interpretants”.
