Abstract:In his bookThe Experience of the Foreign: Culture and Translation in Romantic Germanythat focuses on the German culturalprocess before and after the nineteenth century, Antoine Berman carries out a historical “archaeology” on the origins, developments and tendencies of German translation activities and theories since Luther. His analyses and conclusive statements on some fundamental issues in translation eventually lead to his definition of translation as “the experience of the foreign”. This paper, starting from the implicit logic of Berman’s translation thoughts, attempts to clarify certain misunderstandings related to the interpretation and understanding of Berman’s theories that still exist in the current academic translation circle in the perspective of text analysis and “interpretants”.

Abstract:SUMMARY A comparison of two major German-language monographs on interlinguistics sheds light on the common basis of the discipline and on its two major theoretical orientations, the sociological and the linguistic. Although interlinguistics properly includes the scientific study and systematic improvement of international linguistic communication in general, the creation and use of planned languages (international auxiliary languages) remains its chief object of research. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Ein Vergleich von zwei großen deutschsprachigen Monographien über Interlinguistik beleuchtet die gemeinsamen Grundlagen der Disziplin und ihre zwei wichtigsten theoretischen Richtungen, die soziologische und die linguistische. Abstract:The task of the anthropologist is to take ideas, concepts and beliefs from one culture and translate them into first another language, and then into the language of anthropology. This process is both fascinating and complex. Not only does it raise questions about the limitations of language, but it also challenges the ability of the anthropologist to communicate another culture accurately. In recent years, postmodern theories have tended to call into question the legitimacy of translation altogether. This book acknowledges the problems involved, but shows definitively that 'translating cultures' can successfully be achieved. The way we talk, write, read and interpret are all part of a translation process. Many of us are not aware of translation in our everyday lives, but for those living outside their native culture, surrounded by cultural difference, the ability to translate experiences and thoughts becomes a major issue. Drawing on case studies and theories from a wide range of disciplines - including anthropology, philosophy, linguistics, art history, folk theory, and religious studies - this book systematically interrogates the meaning, complexities and importance of translation in anthropology and answers a wide range of provocative questions, such as: Can we unravel the meaning of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity when there have been so many translations? Abstract:This chapter is dedicated to translation. In their work, the authors constantly discuss the translation of words used to deal with interculturality in order to avoid ‘untranslatability’, ‘misunderstanding’ and ‘non-understanding’, but, maybe, more importantly, in order to rebalance the power relations between East and West. Renegotiating translation enriches how we can benefit from engaging with interculturality as an object of research and education. Their students’ discussions are also included to show how they reflect themselves on the process of translating Chinese ideologies of interculturality for the outside world. All in all, the authors warn against taking translation lightly when it comes to unthinking and rethinking interculturality, by showing examples of misusing/simplifying the translation of Chinese ‘concepts’ to essentialize the Chinese. Dialogue between scholars and students from around the world is needed more than ever to ensure that more voices are heard about what interculturality could be and entail.

Abstract:Dissimilarity and similarity are two basic concepts that the study of translation frequently touches upon. The untranslatable is usually traceable to dissimilarity, and the translatable, to similarity. Correspondingly, the unity of opposites between the two profoundly exhibits a comprehensive picture of translation. This paper, proceeding with the definition of dissimilarity, probes into the relationship between selfness and otherness to reveal the cross-cultural essence of translation. Confronted with the contradiction between dissimilarity and similarity, one must consider these important factors: expression of cultural positions as well as cultural reconstruction, and the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication.

Abstract:Based on observations of strategies adopted in Western interpretation and translation of the Chinese classic I Ching, this paper draws parallels between such strategies and Western developments in hermeneutics philosophy. In relation to this parallelism, three approaches of Western encounters with Chinese ancient literature – “conservative,” “dialogical,” and “radical” – will be identified. Cultural manifestations of such developments in twentieth century poetry, music, and the arts will be discussed.

Abstract:International cooperation in history teaching and related teacher education requires clarification of terminology as well as of underlying concepts and theoretical foundations, since these levels are fundamentally intertwining. If these levels are addressed, both comparison and translation do not only make cooperation possible, but promise valuable contributions to the clarification of such concepts on either side. Being the German counterpart to the viewpoint of Peter Seixas, this article both corroborates and adds to his reflections. Three complexes of theory and terminology are addressed: ‘Geschichtsbewusstsein’ (‘historical consciousness’) with special regard to the concept of ‘Sinnbildung’ in Jörn Rüsen’s theory, the German focus on the concepts of source (‘Quelle’) compared to the Anglosaxon concept of ‘evidence’ and the challenges posed by translating Jörn Rüsen’s concept of ‘Triftigkeiten’ (plausibility) as a criterion for assessing the quality of historical statements.

Abstract:In this study, hermeneutic and research areas in the historical process are briefly mentioned. In the studies of the literature, it is seen that hermeneutics is included in new research topics within the framework of language, culture and history. However, in the literature review, it is seen that hermeneutics interacts with translation studies within the framework of common elements, and it is now a discipline that is applied in new theoretical studies. It has been observed that hermeneutic approaches are seen in translation studies and studies are associated with hermeneutics. According to hermeneutics, meaning changes within the framework of time and culture and acquires different values. However, traditions and society shape meaning and do not accept it as one. The hermeneutic approach focuses on translating and conveying meanings, not on the translation of words. Translator subjectivity is also frequently encountered in the hermeneutic approach. In this respect, studies on the translator and the translation process are increasing. In addition, this approach is presented as a method based on hermeneutic principles for further research within the scope of translation hermeneutics. In this study, the validity of the hermeneutic approach in translation studies has been tried to be explained. This validity also includes factors such as subjectivity, intuition, corporeality and creativity in the theoretical reflection of the hermeneutic approach.
Do People Only Create in Their Mother Tongue? Schleiermacher’s Argument Against the “Naturalizing” Method of Translation, From Today’s Point of View

Abstract:Schleiermacher’s text “On the Different Methods of Translating” (1813) is considered here from the historical perspective. Its absence in older and more recent editions of his works is quite strange and contrasts with its central relevance for Translation Studies. L. Venuti’s role in drawing attention to the text in the field is duly stressed. Also the fact that it represents a paradigm shift in the history of translation theory and methodology is reflected upon. The argument for this historical change is based upon the analysis of key concepts used in the text, such as “border” (Grenze) and “strangeness” (fremd / das Fremde / die Fremdheit), involved in Schleiermacher’s thought about language and translation in the context of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon. This analysis eventually argues against common interpretations of the author’s alleged belief in the racial supremacy of the Germans.Finally, Schleiermacher’s considerations regarding the method of translating which he does not accept is scrutinized, not in order to contradict him, but mainly to show how his argument that people only create in their mother tongue can by no means be confirmed in today’s multicultural societies. Indeed, it is a fact that much multicultural literature is now not only published but also rewarded with prizes and awards, as for example in Germany where many successful literary authors are not native speakers of German.

Abstract:Originally published in different journals and collected volumes, these papers in conceptual analysis cover some central topics in translation theory and research: types of theory and hypothesis; causality and explanation; norms, strategies and so-called universals; translation sociology, and ethics. There are critical reviews of Catford’s theory, and of Skopos theory, and of Kundera’s views on literary translation, and detailed analyses of the literal translation hypothesis and the unique items hypothesis. The methodological discussions, which draw on work in the philosophy of science, will be of special relevance to younger researchers, for example those starting work on a doctorate. Some of the arguments and positions defended – for instance on the significant status of conceptual, interpretive hypotheses, and the ideal of consilience – relate to wider ongoing debates, and will interest any scholar who is concerned about the increasing fragmentation of the field and about the future of Translation Studies. Let the dialogue continue!

Abstract:Abstract The sociology of translation has opened up a broad field of research in recent years. Nevertheless, the autonomy of this research line has been relativized since this ‘sociological turn’ was preceded by the ‘cultural turn’ in translation studies (TS). Consequently, the focus of research should be on the interaction between translation and culture when analyzing sociological aspects in TS. Therefore, in this article, the concept of cultural transfer is used as a processual basis for the study of sociological aspects of a literary transfer in tandem with the way a target culture influences a translation and subjects it to its own ideas. This allows for interpreting all activity regulated by various actors from the perspective of the receiving culture. Focusing on the reception of recent Dutch and Belgian literatures in Germany, the presented approach offers innovations in the study of literary transfer while also acknowledging methodological challenges.

Abstract:The article carries out a cultural analysis of the importance of literary translation as cross-cultural communication in the process of intercultural interaction for the sake of theoretical understanding of the conditions and possibilities of maximum mutual understanding and transfer of experience between the cultures of different states. Like any kind of translation, artistic translation is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon. From an institutional point of view, it can be considered as a specific form of literary reception and cultural mediation, as a form of cultural production that takes place in a specific environment at the junction of two (often national) literatures and cultures. Literary translation is often motivated not only by the dynamics of local factors, but also by the dynamics of the global space of cultural exchange. The translator has the status of a mediator between cultures. The target text, like the original text, is a cultural semiotic product. translation is undoubtedly an act of intercultural communication; this should be the unquestionable starting point for any modern research in translation. It is obvious that the aim of the present article is not to challenge indisputable facts. Rather, the main point is that what presents itself as a unanimously accepted thesis is in fact open to multiple interpretations due to the polysemy of the term culture. The cultural aspects of translation are inevitably affected by the still unsettled debates about culture. The translator is a specialist in intercultural communication. He knows how to determine the most appropriate means of mediation for the desired meaning in a given socio-cultural context. Communication is a common and well-known part of our lives that we often do not pay attention to it's importance. Moreover, we often participate in the communication process only as senders and recipients of information without being aware that we are dealing with a complex process, which itself contains many interconnected steps with each other. Human society is built and exists precisely thanks to the human ability for communication. Cross-cultural communication is hard work that requires mediation, appropriation, and negotiation. The literary text is processed, consumed and interpreted by the target reader, the bearer of certain ideological and aesthetic views

Abstract:An influential strand within modern translation studies has drawn a portrait of the translator as a deeply ambivalent figure, charged with the challenging task of preserving the foreign of the original work within the new version, and thus as inevitably torn between two languages and cultures. The case of the first English translations of Freud's work, undertaken by Abraham Arden Brill, is used here to demonstrate that a detailed historical and philological analysis of textual practices can help us situate the figure of the ambivalent translator in its proper context, namely within a historical model of translation. Retracing this model and its ramifications also has larger implications for an approach that should allow us to understand the relational, affective and institutional bonds connecting authors, translators and readers in global processes of cultural transmission of the human sciences.

Abstract:Creative writing and translation have an intricate relation in writing, scholarship, the classroom and beyond. The philosophical context of mimesis and anti-mimesis affects writers, translators, critics, scholars, teachers and students. Imitation, innovation, originality, copying all become part of the debate over translation and creativity. From Plato through Roger Ascham to Immanuel Kant and beyond, this article explores the relation between writing and translation and discusses contributions to this debate East and West before proceeding to the author’s experience in those two realms, especially in Canada, England, China and the United States. I argue that translation is creative, for both creative writing and translation are – along with reading – forms of interpretation. Translators of poetry are, or should be, poets who create anew or recreate the poems.

Abstract:With the emergence of a “cultural turn” in western translation researches since the 1970s, translators’ subjectivity has been highlighted, and some researchers have also been aware of the existence of intersubjectivity in translation activities; however, the views on the connotation and origin of intersubjectivity in translation are still controversial. This paper attempts to probe into the root causes for the existence of “intersubjectivity in translation” from a cognitive perspective, based on the fundamental “reality-cognition-language” principle in the Embodied Philosophy and cognitive linguistics. According to this principle, “cognition” mediates between “reality” and “language”. Language is formed on the basis of bodily experience and through the processing of human cognitive mechanism. Language is not a self-contained system, but closely related to the external world and human cognition. Furthermore, the author analyzes in depth Prof. Wang Yin’s viewpoint of “weakening phenomena” on “reality-cognition-language”, which sheds light on the study of intersubjectivity in translation. Qualitative research methods (including interviews and translation tests, etc.) have been adopted to collect relevant research data from carefully chosen respondents with different cultural backgrounds and bilingual competence, showing the manifestations of intersubjectivity in translation and the rationality of the kernel “reality-cognition language” principle in cognitive linguistics. In conclusion, fundamentally, it is the “commonness” and “differences” of individual subjects involved in translation activities (including the original author, the translator, the reader of the target text, and the translation initiator, etc.) together with the complicated interrelations among “reality”, “cognition” and “language” that cause intersubjectivity in translation. Intersubjectivity and subjectivity are interdependent, coexisting in the holistic field of translation.
On scholar translators in literary translation – a case study of Kinkley's translation of ‘Biancheng’

Abstract:In literary translation, scholar translators distinguish themselves by resorting to discernibly different translation strategies. This paper is a case study of the English translation of Shen Congwen's novella 'Biancheng' (Border Town) by a scholar translator - Jeffrey C. Kinkley, a renowned American scholar of history and sinology. Compared with the previous translators of 'Biancheng', Kinkley demonstrates obvious differences in his choices, which can be analyzed through his two conspicuous translation strategies: the in-text explications and the out-text endnotes. He tries to represent as much as possible the unique Chinese expressions in the source text (ST) by inserting extra explanations to what is implied in those expressions. He also provides dozens of endnotes to supply background information of historical, cultural, and local significance, and of ST editions and further readings. Drawing on Casanova's framework (Casanova, 2010), this paper discusses the significance of the translation by probing into the positions of the source language (SL) and the target language (TL), of the author, and of the translator. I demonstrate that the choices made by Kinkley betray his structured habitus as a scholar translator. On the basis of this case study, we might hypothesize that once a text is selected for translation, the position of the translator has greater decisive power; that a scholar translator is more visible in the target text (TT); and that the stronger the academic background of the translator, the more ST-oriented the translation.

Abstract:The most common difficulty in translation studies has traditionally been the dilemma between the historical and synchronic approaches in the analysis and description of the culture of translation. On the one hand the culture of translation might be presented as the sum of various kinds of translated texts (repertoire of culture), on the other hand it might be described as the hierarchy of the various types of translations themselves. The first approach assumes plenty of languages for such description, in the latter one suggests only one language for the same representation. A cultural critic faces the same problems. In these perspectives the translation reveals important mechanisms of the performance of culture. First of all it is the semiotic interpretation of the theory of translation, introduced by the number of scientists beginning with R. Jakobson and including U. Eco who put together interlinguistic, intra-linguistic, and inter-semiotic translations, so crucial for the further understanding of culture. As a result, the general notion of culture might be described as the process of total translation. And secondly, the other valuable contribution to the theory of translation has been made by both M. Bakhtin and J. Lotman in terms of the synthesis of two traditions in semiotics of culture resulted in juxtaposing such notions as dialogism and autonomy — creolization, polyphony, counterword, and translation.
