On Similarity and Dissimilarity --Cultural Considerations of Translation

Abstract:Dissimilarity and similarity are two basic concepts that the study of translation frequently touches upon. The untranslatable is usually traceable to dissimilarity, and the translatable, to similarity. Correspondingly, the unity of opposites between the two profoundly exhibits a comprehensive picture of translation. This paper, proceeding with the definition of dissimilarity, probes into the relationship between selfness and otherness to reveal the cross-cultural essence of translation. Confronted with the contradiction between dissimilarity and similarity, one must consider these important factors: expression of cultural positions as well as cultural reconstruction, and the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to report on a number of recent developments in the study of translation and to focus on the issue of ‘markedness’, singled out here as a central element in the process of translation. Linguistic markedness and the twin notion of ‘textual evaluativeness’ are examined as part of the wider issue of dealing with ‘style’ in translation or the need to translate not only ‘what’ is said, but also ‘how’ it is said. The perspective adopted is essentially applied text-linguistic: the linguistic focus is on the ‘text’ as a unit of both communication and translation, while the scope of application is specifically informed by a practitioner research paradigm. The markedness, evaluativeness and style theme is pursued against a backdrop of how the theory and practice of translation has evolved in the last 50 years or so from an emphasis on formal notions of translation ‘equivalence’ within the ‘linguistics phase’, to more dynamic notions of equivalence within the ‘cultural model’, and ultimately to models of translation which see equivalence in the light of text in context and beyond.

Abstract:By exploring the cultural discrepancies in Chinese legal texts and their English versions and to what extent legal and cultural discrepancies influence and constrain legal translation, the study argues that it is useful to consider cultural discrepancies within a semiotic framework. Language is a phenomenon and factor that links different cultures; the use of language is crucial to any legal system. Law, as a cultural product, is attended by cultural discrepancies when switched into other languages for the purpose of achieving equivalence. After a brief overview of cultural differences in translation, legal translation in particular, the study is set to examine the role of translation in crossing through different legal cultures and backgrounds and investigate barriers in the process of translation. Investigating cultural discrepancies in legal translation within a semiotic framework allows us to focus on certain interpretations by acknowledging that legal texts are composed with systems of systems and interacting with other cultural aspects in a wider context.

Abstract:Translation plays a key role in conveying the message from one Source Language (SL) to Target Language (TL). However, it does not necessarily refer to two different languages as translation is generally classified into three categories (intralingual, interlingual and intersemiotic). Among the existing translation methods, two methods are intensively being compared and debated over: semantic and communicative translation. While the former has a connection to literal and free translation, the latter has been recently and popularly recognized for its importance in the field of translation. The semantic approach tends to preserve the author’s language expression by giving utmost importance on its peculiar content and meaning. On the other hand, in the communicative approach, the translator has the freedom to remove obscurities, eliminate repetition and specify the general terms for the comprehension of the audience. Furthermore, translation is not as an easy task as it seems. Successful translation requires complicated multi-task practice that involves the application of various skills. Not to mention the impact of word concreteness and dominance on translation efficiency as well as the continuous improvement in proficiency that all bilinguals need to cope with. Although the two approaches function differently, there are some cases when the application of both methods is required. This is especially true in translating texts where both the “form” and “content” are equally important. In conclusion, the connection and the bond between culture and language cannot be underestimated as they are closely intertwined with each other. In the process of translation, where three main important players (author, translator and receiver) from various cultural backgrounds are involved, no matter how the mediator tries to translate the Source Language to Target Language (either semantically or communicatively), loss of message during the process is inevitable.

Abstract:Narrowly defined, contrastive linguistics can be regarded as a branch of comparative linguistics that is concerned with pairs of languages which are ‘socio-culturally linked’. Two languages can be said to be socio-culturally linked when (i) they are used by a considerable number of bior multilingual speakers, and/or (ii) a substantial amount of ‘linguistic output’ (text, discourse) is translated from one language into the other. According to this definition, contrastive linguistics deals with pairs of languages such as Spanish and Basque, but not with Latin and (the Australian language) Dyirbal, as there is no socio-cultural link between these languages.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to provide a discussion of some of the basic differences and similarities between the Chinese and Western traditions of translation. After analysing some of the major findings about what is shared and what is unshared between the two traditions, as well as what lies beneath these differences and similarities, four basic conclusions are made; namely, (a) comparative translation studies is important and should be fully developed; (b) the differences between the Chinese and Western translation traditions are necessarily conditioned by differences in their broader socio-cultural framework; (c) quite similar ideas have been produced over the centuries between China and the West, which may be regarded as elements of ‘universality' as the most outstanding feature of theoretical discussions about translation across language-cultures; and most importantly, (d) an understanding of Chinese-Western differences and similarities should help create a meaningful environment in which translators and translation theorists from different traditions can draw upon one another's experiences. The rationale of the discussion is that by bringing culturally disparate translation traditions such as the Chinese and Western into comparison, important insights may be gained about the nature of translation and translation studies in general.

Abstract:This paper aims at facilitating translating practice by reinterpreting Peter Newmark’s theory from a different linguistic viewpoint blending with cultural factors. The research methods adopted in the paper include literature review, comparison and case study. Communicative translation and semantic translation are two major translation methods put forward by Peter Newmark in one of his masterpieces Approaches to Translation. Meanwhile, he classified the texts into three types according to their functions, namely, expressive, informative as well as vocative texts, and accordingly explored the adoption of ST or CT from the perspective of the dominant function of the text. However, the present paper takes a new look into the theory of ST and CT by analyzing them in terms of syntax, culture and pragmatics, which can shed some light on translating practice. The conclusion is that the combination and flexible use of both is the most ideal translation method.

Abstract:Current translation theories and translation critiques generally focus on a contrastive analysis between the original text and the rendered one.Little attention is paid to another dimension of the translating process,i.e.the impact of translation on the target language.In the history of translation,however,there have always been great translators who set up the transformation of the target lan-guage as the main objective of their work.This objective has been either neglected or misinterpreted,as in the case of Lu Xun.But if we examine the development of modern Chinese language,we will see that both the modern political discourse and the literary language in China have been deeply influenced by translated texts.

Abstract:Based on Zhuangzi with Chinese Annotation and Translation written by Chen (2007), this article has conducted a contrastive analysis of different translations of Zhuangzi by Liang and Kang (2020), Ziporyn (2009), Legge (1891) and Watson (1968). This study aims to help translate Chinese classics and offer western readers a better comprehension of the extensive and profound philosophical thoughts of Chinese traditional culture. It is found that with full consideration of the target readers, Liang and Kang’s (2020) translation has retained most of the original thoughts of Zhuangzi and hereby bridges the cultural gap which is beyond the efforts of western translators. The publication of this translation has tremendous significance for cultural exchange and international interaction, guiding future translation practice and engaging in translation criticism.

Abstract:Translation is a complex process that ensures cross-cultural communication in the realm of literature and literary writings, translation has been used to educate and inform readers about other cultures and traditions. The source and target language English and Urdu respectively vary a great deal from each other therefore; the underlying differences between these languages become apparent contributing towards inevitable shifts in translation. This research comparatively analyses Elif Shafak’s novel Honour and its translation in Urdu done by Huma Anwar titled Namoos looking at oblique translation techniques such as: equivalence, transposition, modulation, and adaptation. This research analyses the various examples where these translational shifts are apparent and studies how they have an overall impact on the target text. This research is grounded in the theoretical framework postulated by Vinay and Darbelnet in their seminal work Comparative Stylistics of French and English: A methodology for translation (1958). Wherein, two main categories of translations have been identified: direct translation and oblique translation further classified as, direct translation and oblique translation. The study finds that translational shifts and techniques have been utilised by the translator to convey the intended meaning and message to the target audiences with minimal loss of essence. Abstract:Taixi Renshen Shuogai and Quanti Xinlun are about physiology and anatomy which were translated by missionaries, representing development situation of Western anatomy in different periods. These two books played an important role in propagating anatomy theory and affecting Chinese traditional anatomy theory. So from the perspective of communication, this passage compared these two books in translator and purpose, communication content, scope and effect, in order to probe the significance in changing the concept of human anatomy and spreading western anatomy knowledge.

Abstract:Translator behavior criticism theory is regarded as one of the main current translation studies theory in China. It is proposed by Professor Zhou Lingshun in 2010 and now it has been for 10 years. In 2014, he made his proposals clearly in two of his influential books. After that, this theory has drawn a lot of attention from the academic circle and the number of related articles on it is increasing year by year. This article starts from changes of the role of translator and translator’s position as the center, which provides the background for this theory. Then it moves on to make clear the main proposals and practice of this theory, especially his “truth-seeking and utility attaining” continuum mode of evaluation. Through this continuum mode, one can measure the degree of rationality of a translator’s behavior by taking various factors into consideration, and then the evaluation of the translated version. This theory provides a new perspective on translation by combining translator’s behavior with translation. But in practice, some scholars also questioned the manipulability of his continuum mode. So in the end, this article talks about the significance and limitations of this theory. His theory is a breakthrough in translation studies, but still needs to be further polished.

Cultural Approaches to Translation Studies in Western and Chinese Translatologies

Abstract:By analyzing and comparing the sources and features of cultural approaches to translation studies in China and in Western countries, this article discusses research targets, methodologies and problems of cultural research in Chinese translatology. It points out that new theories, including Western translation theories, broadens the horizon of China's translation studies while, at the same time, cultural research in China's translation studies must be based on China's own conditions and aim at solving China's own practical problems. In this respect, it suggests that Chinese researchers pay more attention to descriptive studies as well as proper assessment and analysis of translation activities and products.
