Abstract:Poetry is quite personal in the sense that it is mainly written for the expression of the poets’ personal emotions, feelings, attitudes, point of views, etc. Therefore, it is endowed with strong subjectivity. Poets resort to different linguistic devices to realize their subjectivity in their poetry, which is termed as subjectification. Consequently, poets’ subjectivity constitutes an essential part of the meaning of their poetry. Thus, in the translation of poetry, it is vital for the translator to reconstruct the poets’ subjectivity. This paper attempts to conduct a contrast of thirteen English versions of Ru Meng Ling by Li Qingzhao from the perspective of subjectivity and subjectification. It will first make an analysis of Li Qingzhao’s subjectivity and subjectification in her Ru Meng Ling from the three dimensions, perspective, affect and epistemic modality. Then, a contrast is provided among the thirteen English versions. It is found that it is difficult to achieve a complete equivalence of subjectification due to the translators’ subjectivity in their translation. However, a good translator attempts to eschew his/her own subjectivity and reconstruct the poet’s subjectivity as much as possible.

Abstract:Li Qingzhao (1084-ca. 1155?) is widely lauded as the most celebrated and talented woman poet in the history of classical Chinese literature. This study, with the theoretical guidance of Dr. Wang Feng’s “Harmony-Guided Three-Level Poetry Translation Criteria”, focuses on a comparative analysis of the collected renditions of the ci-poem “to the tune of Tipsy in Flower Shade” at the macro, middle and micro levels, to further promote the translation and communication of classical Chinese literature. This study aims to exert far-reaching influences on the process of Chinese literature going global, which has unprecedented contemporary significance.

Abstract:Transitivity theory in functional grammar proposed by Halliday is the core of metafunction,including such different processes as material process,mental process,relational process,behavioral process,verbal process and existential process.Within the theretical framework of Hallidayan transitivity system,this paper analyzes Li Qingzhao's Ru Meng Ling and its 14 English versions from the pespective of transitivity theory and gives a comparative transitivity analysis of the translation versions with the aim of evaluating the quality of translation and elucidating the applicability of the theory in the process of translating ancient poems from Chinese into English.

Abstract:Based on Zhuangzi with Chinese Annotation and Translation written by Chen (2007), this article has conducted a contrastive analysis of different translations of Zhuangzi by Liang and Kang (2020), Ziporyn (2009), Legge (1891) and Watson (1968). This study aims to help translate Chinese classics and offer western readers a better comprehension of the extensive and profound philosophical thoughts of Chinese traditional culture. It is found that with full consideration of the target readers, Liang and Kang’s (2020) translation has retained most of the original thoughts of Zhuangzi and hereby bridges the cultural gap which is beyond the efforts of western translators. The publication of this translation has tremendous significance for cultural exchange and international interaction, guiding future translation practice and engaging in translation criticism.

Abstract:Poetry translation is a formidable task for the difficulty of achieving unity of form and content. This thesis analyzes two English versions of Bai Juyi’s Song of a Pipa Player from the perspective of translation aesthetics of Liu Miqing, one is Xu Yuanchong’s and the other is Witter Bynner’s. It is found that translation aesthetics theory is a thread running through two translations, and reasons of different translation choices can be explained from translators’ translation idea, thinking pattern and sensitivity of expressed emotion of the ST, which can be a guidance for poetry translation.

Abstract:There are many English versions of poems on the market with different styles, but the quality of the translated poems is quite different. This paper mainly makes a comparative analysis of English translations of Li Bai's "Invitation to Wine" by using Dr Wang Feng's "Harmony-Guided Three-Level Poetry Translation Criteria" and concludes that when translating poems into English, we should not only achieve harmony at the macro level, and the similar style and artistic conception at the meso-level, but pay attention to the representation of various beauties at the micro-level. Through the analysis, the authors hope to verify the guiding role of "Harmony-Guided Three-Level Poetry Translation Criteria" in poetry translation and promote the English translation of Chinese poetry.

Abstract:Yu Meiren is a wonderful work of classical Chinese poetry because of the poet’s inexhaustible sadness for the destruction of his country, which is just like a torrent of water. Due to the unique cultural symbols, Chinese poetry has also been given much attention in the study of foreign translations of Chinese culture. With the frequent cultural exchanges between China and other foreign countries, translators for Chinese poetry translation are also becoming more than before. However, the translation of the same poem may have different characteristics because of the different translation views and purposes of translators. Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, this paper will analyze different versions of translations of Yu Meiren and discuss the translation strategies that should be adopted in the translation of Chinese poems. Thus, the translation of Chinese poetry will be more in line with the reading habits of the target readers and promote the foreign dissemination of China’s excellent traditional culture.

In order to better illustrate the connotation of poetry translation and translation aesthetics, the essay will mainly compare the poetic representation of the two English versions from the aspects of rhythm, form, image, culture and content, targeting to present the differences between the two English versions and offer some suggestions on poetry translation.

Abstract:The poetry of Tang is a kind of classic literature of China and famous historical heritage. Taking the "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria" as the theoretical basis, this paper compares the translations of two translators of different styles in different periods of Li Bai's " Looking at the Mount Sky Gate" from the macro, middle and micro levels. As for the Chinese translator Xu Yuanchong, his version has high formal beauty and musical beauty. Besides the expression of a few images, he also gave a good consideration to "the beauty of numbers". Rewi Alley's translation is a free verse, but he tries to approach the original poem in terms of meaning. By the analysis of the above two versions, the authors endeavor to give their own version according to the "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria". The translation study of " Looking at the Mount Sky Gate " can enrich the theory of "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria" and promote the spread of Chinese literature and culture. Abstract:Based on Halliday’s systemic functional context theory, this paper makes a contrastive analysis of the transitivity process, register variants, and text genre of the two English translations of Li Qingzhao’s “Slow Slow Song” from the three dimensions of cultural context, situational context, and co-text to explore the characteristics of the language expressions of the two translations. It is found that there are differences in the process of transitivity, register variants, and discourse genre between the two translations and the original text. Based on the language use characteristics of the two translations, this paper further discusses the English translation strategies of Song Ci from the three levels of discourse cohesion, meaning interpretation, and genre selection to provide a reference for the translation practice of Song Ci.

Abstract:As one of the valuable literary legacies of China, Tang poetry contains rich linguistic and cultural knowledge. Translating it into English not only helps spread the excellent traditional culture of China to the outside world, but also promotes people to delve into and re-experience its profound meaning, thus making it last forever. This study explores the two English translations of "Shu Xiang" from the perspective of Eco-Translatology, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each translation in terms of "three-dimensional" transformation. Feeling the uniqueness of language through comparison and understanding the profoundness of culture through analysis, thereby enhancing cultural confidence. It provides reference for the translation of Chinese literary classics into English, and promotes the research on relevant models for the internationalization of Chinese literature and culture. The research results indicate that Xu Yuanchong's translation has the highest degree of integrated adaptive selection. The study also demonstrates that the theory of Eco-Translatology can be used to analyze English translations of poetry and provide a new perspective for the translation of poetry.

Abstract:The poem Lines Sent to the North Written during Night Rains is one of the most famous poems of the late Tang poet Li Shangyin. It is widely favored by translators and has many English versions. Through the literature research, it is found that there are few studies of its English versions combined with the linguistic tool of transitivity. This paper aims to study the poem Lines Sent to the North Written during Night Rains and its three English versions from the perspective of system-functional linguistics, taking the concept of transitivity as a theoretical tool, supplemented by the theory of functional equivalence to evaluate the three English versions. According to the results of transitivity characteristic analysis and functional equivalence evaluation, it is found that keeping the transitivity characteristics of the original and the translation consistent is actually a kind of application and embodiment of the principle of functional equivalence, and the change of transitivity characteristics does not necessarily violate the principle of functional equivalence, because in specific circumstances, the transformation of process types can also help to achieve the effect of meaning equivalence, reproduce the artistic conception, and finally realize the goal of functional equivalence.

Abstract:Hongloumeng by Xueqin Cao (Hsueh-ch‘in Ts'ao) is generally considered one of the greatest classical Chinese novel. Of all nine published English translations known today, the one translated by Hawkes and Minford (the Story of the Stone, Penguin, 1973–86) and the other by Yang and Yang (A Dream of Red Mansions1, Foreign Languages Press in Beijing, 1978–80) are the best known among translators and literary scholars. Over the years, both have been carefully scrutinized and much critiqued. Translators and translation scholars have been engaged in heated debates over salient features of the translations, strategies employed by the translators, the possible effects of the two translations and so on [cf. Abstract:Feminist translation theory has a long history and has been developed and perfected in the translation practice of many works. This section explains feminist translation theory and also explains the translation perspective of "bisexual homology" that belongs to the feminist translation methodology. This essay proposed to discuss a famous poet in Song Dynasty, who is Li Qingzhao. Her poems reflect the characteristics of the Song Dynasty women's euphemisms and shallow feelings, and reflect women's keen intuition. In this paper, it aims to analyze how a variety of translators express feminism in translated texts. It is obvious that translators always use preface, footnoting, hijacking and supplement to represent feminism. After the analysis of translated text, the strategies that used in these texts can be an effective and efficient method to make the readers have a deeper and more clear understanding of some traditional Chinese stuffs in the these poems and the representing in feminism.

Abstract:As one of Lao She’s masterpieces, Teahouse is a gem and a milestone in Chinese drama which is renowned both domestically and internationally. This article examines the translation of Beijing dialects in two English versions of Teahouse translated by Ying Ruochen and Howard from the perspective of reception aesthetic theory. The results indicates that Ying’s version focuses on stage performance, using simple or concise language which to some extent differs from the aesthetic expectations of the target language readers, while Howard’s translation, aiming at readers’ acceptance, tends to employ formal expressions and lengthy sentence structures, which are less suitable for stage presentation and performance.By revealing the translation differences in local dialects in the versions under this theoretical framework, this paper is hoped to provide valuable insights for translation studies and practice.

Abstract:Tang poetry, a treasure of Chinese classical culture and art, is one of the precious representatives of the Chinese historical and cultural heritage. With its rich form, wide range of subjects and unique artistic charm, it represents the highest level of Chinese classical poetry. Based on Dr. Wang Feng's "Harmony-guided Three-Level poetry translation criteria", this paper compares and analyzes four English versions of different styles in different periods of Li Bai's "Qing Ping Melody (three poems)", and demonstrates that the theory is reasonable and feasible as the principle of poetry translation practice and criticism, aiming to encourage researchers to pay more attention to the field of Tang poetry translation and promote the further dissemination of Chinese classical poetry.

Abstract:Lu Xun is an outstanding representative in modern Chinese literature.The four-volume Lu Xun Selected Works translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang(called Yang's version for short) is the largest in the number of works included and the most comprehensive in the genre.British scholar Julia Lovell(named Lan Shiling in Chinese) is the foreign scholar whose English version of The Real Story of Ah-Q and Other Tales of China: The Complete Fiction of Lu Xun is the most complete collection of Lu Xun's stories and the most recent one(called Lan's version for short).On the basis of ten typical examples taken from the two English versions of Lu Xun's story Village Opera and Julia Lovell,the authors conduct a contrastive study on the English language used in their translations,and tentatively point out their strengths and weaknesses.
