Abstract:This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:We present the first English translation of Einstein's original papers related to the teleparallel ('absolute parallelism', 'distant parallelism' and the German 'Fernparallelismus' are synonyms) attempt of an unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. Our collection contains the summarizing paper in Math. Annal. 102 (1930) pp. 685-697 and 2 reports published in 'Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften' on June 7th, 1928 (pp. 217-221), June 14th, 1928 (pp. 224-227) and a precursor report (July 9th, 1925 pp. 414-419). To ease understanding, literature on tensor analysis is quoted in the footnotes.

Energy and equations of motion in a tentative theory of gravity with a privileged reference frame

Abstract:Based on a tentative interpretation of gravity as a pressure force, a scalar theory of gravity was previously investigated. It assumes gravitational contraction (dilation) of space (time) standards. In the static case, the same Newton law as in special relativity was expressed in terms of these distorted local standards, and was found to imply geodesic motion. Here, the formulation of motion is reexamined in the most general situation. A consistent Newton law can still be defined, which accounts for the time variation of the space metric, but it is not compatible with geodesic motion for a time-dependent field. The energy of a test particle is defined: it is constant in the static case. Starting from 'dust', a balance equation is then derived for the energy of matter. If the Newton law is assumed, the field equation of the theory allows to rewrite this as a true conservation equation, including the gravitational energy. The latter contains a Newtonian term, plus the square of the relative rate of the local velocity of gravitation waves (or that of light), the velocity being expressed in terms of absolute standards.

Abstract:English and Spanish translations are provided for Fritz Zwicky's seminal article on "The Redshift of Extragalactic Nebulae", published in German in Helvetica Physica Acta in 1933 <<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://www.e-periodica.ch/digbib/view?pid=hpa-001:1933:6#112>" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>. This paper is usually cited as the first evidence for dark matter ("dunkle Materie", not "missing matter"). Zwicky's conclusion is based on the velocity dispersion of only seven galaxies in the Coma cluster of galaxies. Now, 84 years later, with 1000+ radial velocities measured for Coma cluster members, Coma's velocity dispersion is very close to that found by Zwicky. The translation is as literal as possible, and annotations on the translation of certain terms are given. Doubts on the meaning of the original phrasing are given in square brackets at a few places where they occur. The pdf version of my English translation was kindly prepared by Cren Frayer at the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED), also available at NED's Level5 repository since June 2017 (<<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://ned.ipac.caltech.edu/level5/March17/Zwicky/frames.html>" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>). Abstract:This is an English translation of a paper by Wolfgang Kundt and Manfred Trümper, first published in 1962 in the proceedings of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz (Germany). The original paper was the last of a five-part series of articles containing the first summary of knowledge about exact solutions of Einstein’s equations found until then. (All the other parts of the series have already been re-published as Golden Oldies.) This fifth contribution summarizes key points of the earlier papers and applies them, in particular results from papers II and IV in the series, in the context of the propagation of gravitational radiation when matter is present. The paper has been selected by the Editors of General Relativity and Gravitation for re-publication in the Golden Oldies series of the journal. This republication is accompanied by an editorial note written by Malcolm A.H. MacCallum and by a brief autobiography of Manfred Trümper.

Abstract:[Translation of and Commentary on Léon Rosenfeld's "Ueber die Gravitationwirkungen des Lichtes", Zeitschrift fur Physik 65: 589-599 (1930). Originally published in German. Submitted for publication on September 26, 1930. See [1] in the Comments with References section before reading this English translation.] The gravitational field generated by an electromagnetic field is calculated using of laws of quantum mechanics and it is shown that the resulting gravitational energy turns out to be infinitely large, raising a new difficulty for the Heisenberg-Pauli quantum theory of wave fields. In addition, the transition processes in first-order approximation involving light and gravitational quanta are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The preprint is an English translation of the paper by famous astrophysicist Samuil Kaplan (1921-1978) "O krugovykh orbitakh v teorii tyagoteniya Einsteina (On circular orbits in Einstein's theory of gravitation)", published in 1949 in the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics (Vol. 19, No. 10, pp. 951-952) in Russian. This important 1 and 1/3 page paper is still inaccessible to a wide range of experts and students due to the lack of such translation. This paper is the first scientific publication of Samuil Kaplan and the pioneering work in this field. The aim of this presentation is to make the article available to a wide range of experts in the field of general relativity, relativistic astrophysics and the history of science, as well as to honor its author on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Abstract:We reveal in a rigorous mathematical way using the theory of differential forms, here viewed as sections of a Clifford bundle over a Lorentzian manifold, the true meaning of Freud's identity of differential geometry discovered in 1939 (as a generalization of results already obtained by Einstein in 1916) and rediscovered in disguised forms by several people. We show moreover that contrary to some claims in the literature there is not a single (mathematical) inconsistency between Freud's identity (which is a decomposition of the Einstein indexed 3-forms in two gauge dependent objects) and the field equations of General Relativity. However, as we show there is an obvious inconsistency in the way that Freud's identity is usually applied in the formulation of energy-momentum "conservation laws" in GR. In order for this paper to be useful for a large class of readers (even those ones making a first contact with the theory of differential forms) all calculations are done with all details (disclosing some of the "tricks of the trade" of the subject).

Abstract:The present is a companion paper to "A contemporary look at Hermann Hankel's 1861 pioneering work on Lagrangian fluid dynamics" by Frisch, Grimberg and Villone (2017). Here we present the English translation of the 1861 prize manuscript from Göttingen University "Zur allgemeinen Theorie der Bewegung der Flüssigkeiten" (On the general theory of the motion of the fluids) of Hermann Hankel (1839-1873), which was originally submitted in Latin and then translated into German by the Author for publication. We also provide the English translation of two important reports on the manuscript, one written by Bernhard Riemann and the other by Wilhelm Eduard Weber, during the assessment process for the prize. Finally we give a short biography of Hermann Hankel with his complete bibliography.

Abstract:The first purpose of this short but striking paper is to revisit Elasticity (EL) and Electromagnetism (EM) by comparing the structure of these two theories and examining with details their well known couplings, in particular piezoelectricity and photoelasticity. Despite the strange Helmholtz and Mach-Lippmann analogies existing between them, no classical technique may provide a common setting. However, unexpected arguments discovered independently by the brothers E. and F. Cosserat in 1909 for EL and by H. Weyl in 1918 for EM are leading to construct a new differential sequence called Spencer sequence in the framework of the formal theory of Lie pseudogroups and to introduce it for the conformal group of space-time with 15 parameters. Then, all the previous explicit couplings can be deduced abstractly and one must just go to a laboratory in order to know about the coupling constants on which they are depending, like in the Hooke or Minkowski constitutive relations existing respectively in EL or EM separately. We finally provide a new combined experimental and theoretical proof of the fact that any 1-form with value in the second order jets (elations) of the conformal group of space-time can be uniquely decomposed into the direct sum of the Ricci tensor R and the electromagnetic field F. This result questions the mathematical foundations of both General Relativity (GR) and Gauge Theory (GT). In particular, the Einstein operator (6 terms) must be thus replaced by the formal adjoint of the Ricci operator (4 terms only) in the study of gravitational waves.

Abstract:This is an adapatation by U. Frisch of an English translation by Thomas E. Burton of Euler's memoir `Principes généraux du mouvement des fluides' (Euler, 1775b). Burton's translation appeared in Fluid Dynamics, 34} (1999) pp. 801-82, Springer and is here adapted by permission. A detailed presentation of Euler's published work can be found in Truesdell, 1954. Euler's work is discussed also in the perspective of eighteenth century fluid dynamics research by Darrigol and Frisch, 2008. Explanatory footnotes have been supplied where necessary by G.K. Mikhailov and a few more by U. Frisch and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://O.Darrigol" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. Euler's memoir had neither footnotes nor a list of references.
