Abstract:Studying the recovery of fire-damaged concrete is of huge economic and environmental significance. The recovery of thermal-induced cracks of fire-damaged concrete leads to the recovery of strength after post-fire curing. To identify the crack recovery behavior of fire-damaged concrete after post-fire curing and its relationship with the recovery of strength, in this study, concrete samples exposed to 400, 600, and 800 °C were treated with the post-fire curing process. The compressive strength recovery was investigated, as well as the crack recovery in terms of the crack length. Moreover, the recovery of the cracks was studied and divided into the categories of mortar cracks and mortar-aggregate interfacial cracks. The results indicate that, after being exposed to high temperatures, the interfacial crack was the main type of crack, and it could clearly be recovered by post-fire curing. The recovery of compressive strength mainly resulted from the recovery of interfacial cracks. The findings of this study can provide practical guidance for the application of post-fire curing to the recovery of fire-damaged concrete structures.

Abstract:A comparative study was performed to evaluate the differences in behavioral and physiological stress responses during milking between cows that were milked by an automated milking system (AM-cows) and cows that were milked in a conventional tandem parlor (TM-cows). In a randomized design, 36 primiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were observed and blood sampled (1-min intervals) individually during milking. AM-cows spent less time standing with their heads outside the feeding trough than TM-cows and had a lower heart rate. In addition, AM-cows had lower maximum plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations during milking. No differences were found in the number of steps. After tactile stimulation of the teats either by hand or by the cleaning brush, mean oxytocin concentrations did not differ. In AM-cows, however, elevated oxytocin levels were prolonged at the end of milking. Averaged over the first five blood samples, AM-cows tended to have higher plasma cortisol concentrations than TM-cows, but median fecal concentrations of the cortisol metabolite dioxoandrostane were comparable. Maximum quarter milk flow, maximum udder milk flow and residual milk as a percentage of the total milk volume was comparable. From this study it is concluded that behavioral and physiological responses, both in automatically and in conventionally milked cows, were relatively low and were typical for cows being milked. We therefore conclude that, as far as the welfare of the dairy cow during milking is concerned, automatic milking and conventional milking are equally acceptable.

(2) Acid accelerated urate nucleation, both by its direct action and indirectly by increasing the free calcium in physiological fluids. (3) Synovial fluid from one gouty patient accelerated urate nucleation, while that from one rheumatoid patient inhibited nucleation. (4) X-rays, collagen, ethyl alcohol, cupric ion, and potassium ion all had negligible influence on urate nucleation. (5) Mechanical shock greatly increased urate nucleation.

Abstract:Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, 2 g) were exposed to 0-5 microM total copper in ion-poor water for 3 h in the presence or absence of 10 mg C/L of qualitatively different natural organic matter (NOM) derived from water spanning a large gradient in hydrologic residence time. Accumulation of Cu by trout gills was compared to Cu speciation determined by ion selective electrode (ISE) and by diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) gel sampler technology. The presence of NOM decreased Cu uptake by trout gills as well as Cu concentrations determined by ISE and DGT. Furthermore, the source of NOM influenced Cu binding by trout gills with high-color, allochthonous NOM decreasing Cu accumulation by the gills more than low-color autochthonous NOM. The pattern of Cu binding to the NOM measured by Cu ISE and by Cu accumulation by DGT samplers was similar to the fish gill results. A simple Cu-gill binding model required an NOM Cu-binding factor (F) that depended on NOM quality to account for observed Cu accumulation by trout gills; values of Fvaried by a factor of 2. Thus, NOM metal-binding quality, as well as NOM quantity, are both important when assessing the bioavailability of metals such as Cu to aquatic organisms.

Abstract:Building fire disasters may cause large economic loss and casualties. To improve the fire resistance ability of concrete and repair the fire-damaged concrete structures using an in-situ repairing technique (such as post-fire-curing) can greatly offset these adverse effects. Thus, the present study employed fly ash (FA) to form a CW-FA-cement system which was proved to enhance the high-temperature resistance of cement and CW blended cement and was also favorable for recovery of compressive strength and microstructure induced by water re-curing. In details, incorporation of FA was effective to reduce the deterioration of cement and CW blended cement and was favorable for recovery of compressive strength and microstructure after water re-curing. Incorporation of CW was favorable to increase the restorability of compressive strength re-cured after 400 °C and performed a combined effect with FA to improve the recovery of compressive strength re-cured after 800 °C. Through the microstructural tests, the deterioration of compressive strength was due to the decomposition of hydration products. The recovery of compressive strength was due to the rehydration of dehydrated cement, further hydration of unhydrated cement particles, pozzolanic effect of FA and combined effect of CW and FA. Furthermore, the cement blends containing CW and FA had a good high temperature resistance and restorability.
