Abstract:This paper describes a numerical program to analyze the behavior of the concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) stub columns, and predict various modes of lateral interactions between steel tube and filled-in-concrete under axial compression. The behavior of the CFT columns is controlled by both the strength and the confinement effect of steel tube and filled-in-concrete in the columns. Various lateral interactions between steel tube and filled-in-concrete in CFT columns are classified into eight different cases by the contact between steel tube and filled-in concrete at different stress stages. The paper examines the analytical models with various experimental results in literature. The comparisons showed that the numerical program is reasonable to capture mechanical behavior of concrete-filled circular steel tubes.

Abstract:As a fundamental mechanical problem in steel and concrete composite structures,the axial compressive behavior of concrete filled steel tube stub columns has been widely concerned by researchers worldwide.Focusing on the interaction between the steel tube and the core concrete,this paper presented a nonlinear analytical procedure using the octahedral stress-strain relationship,the corresponding failure criterion and flow rule proposed by Xiao(1989) as well as the simplified hardening model of the steel tube where the stress-strain relationship was represented by four segmental linear lines.The procedure presented in this paper followed fundamental principles of elasto-plastic mechanics to reflect main interactions between the steel tube and concrete infill.A total of sixteen interaction conditions between the concrete and steel tube were taken into consideration.The incremental nonlinear analysis was realized by coding a computer program using Visual Basic.The reasonable accuracy and efficiency of the analytical procedure was validated by comparing with existing testing results from literature.

Abstract:Eccentric loading experiment of 13 steel tube-reinforced concrete columns and a reinforced concrete column is implemented. The whole process from the start load on the steel tube-reinforced concrete column until damage has been researched. Change of ultimate bearing capacity with eccentricity, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, position coefficient has been studied, and deflection curve and load-vertical displacement curve under eccentric compressive load were obtained. Failure characteristics of steel tube-reinforced concrete were divided into two different type, small eccentric damage and big eccentric damage. With the same conditions, when steel tube ratio of steel tube-reinforced concrete was 2%, its ultimate bearing capacity was nearly double of reinforced concrete columns.

Abstract:To improve the concrete confinement and mechanical properties of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, a new configuration of steel-tube-confined concrete-filled steel tube (T-CFST) columns has recently been developed, in which an outer steel tube is employed externally, and the additional tube does not sustain the axial load directly. This preliminary experimental study revealed that, due to the effective concrete confinement by the outer steel tube, the T-CFST column achieves higher compressive strength and more ductile deformation compared to the CFST columns of the same steel ratio. In this study, two finite element (FE) models were developed for the T-CFST cross-section and stub column, respectively. The numerical study results revealed that the concrete can be constrained by the outer steel tube at the beginning of loading and the outer steel tube hoop stress can reach its yield strength at the column’s compressive strength, showing its effective confinement to the concrete. Numerous data were generated by the developed FE model to cover a wide range of parameters. Based on that, the calculation methods for the stress components of the inner and outer steel tubes are proposed. Finally, a suitable prediction method is proposed, utilizing the superposition method to determine the compressive strength of the T-CFST stub column, and the results of the calculation method and FE model agree well with each other. This research is the basis for promoting further research of T-CFST columns.

Abstract:In order to study the mechanical behavior of steel tube confined reinforced concrete (STRC) columns under combined compression-bending-torsion, an experimental investigation was conducted. The load–deformation hysteretic curves and the strain distribution law of steel tubes under pure torsion, bending-torsion and compression-bending-torsion loads were obtained. Results show that a ‘pinch’ effect appeared in the load–deformation hysteretic curves of STRC under pure torsion and bending-torsion loads, however, this was not noticeable for specimens under compression-bending-torsion load. When the axial compression ratio was relatively small, STRC columns under compression-bending-torsion load showed higher bending capacity and torsion capacity than that under bending-torsion load, as well as good energy dissipation capacity. Furthermore, the strain of the steel tube increased linearly with the load, and the corresponding stress was always below the yield strength. Based on the test results, the enhancement of the bending and torsion capacities of reinforced concrete columns caused by steel tubes, and the reduction of the bending capacity of STRC columns caused by torque were analyzed.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical investigation on the compressive behaviour of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns with encased built-up latticed angles. The additional confinement provided by encased angles was considered in the finite element (FE) model, in addition to the contact between tube wall and inner concrete and the effect of tube-wall confinement on concrete model. The established FE model is verified against the existing test results that it can well predict the behaviour of reinforced composite columns under axial compression. The composite action between encased angles and concrete and the efficiency of built-up angle configurations on performance improvement are extensively analyzed through the validated FE models. The influence of three parameters, namely confinement factor (ξ), reinforcement ratio (ρsr) and slenderness ratio (λ), to the angle-contributions on lateral confining pressure and the ultimate strength are evaluated and quantified. It is found the relationship between the strengths of CFST columns and built-up member can be defined as an exponential equation. Finally the design equation based on AISC 360-10 design provisions with consideration of angle-contributions is proposed, and the comparison results show it has a desirable accuracy and satisfactory correlation with both experimental and numerical results.

Abstract:Concrete-filled corrugated steel tubular (CFCST) column is a novel type of steel-concrete composite column, comprising four corrugated steel plates, four square-section steel bars at the corners, and infilled concrete. The transversely placed corrugated steel plates can effectively prevent their premature local buckling, release the axial load, and provide lateral confinement effects on the infilled concrete. This paper investigated the axial compressive behavior of CFCST columns through experimental, numerical, and theoretical approaches. Experiments were conducted on 20 specimens, focusing on their axial load-resistant behavior. The specimens demonstrated excellent axial bearing capacity, ductility, and residual bearing capacity. Besides, the mechanical behavior of corrugated steel plates throughout the loading process was analyzed through the development of the horizontal and vertical strains. Furthermore, a finite element (FE) model was developed to simulate the axial compressive behavior of CFCST columns, which was validated against the experimental data. The FE model was used to analyze the compressive behavior of each part in CFCST columns, revealing that the infilled concrete and steel bars primarily bear the axial load, while the corrugated steel plates mainly provide lateral supports to the infilled concrete. Finally, a simplified method for calculating the critical width of corrugated steel plates and a formula for the axial bearing capacity of CFCST columns were proposed. It was indicated that the limiting width-to-thickness ratio of the corrugated steel plates was larger than that of the steel elements in conventional CFST columns. These formulas were demonstrated to be accurate enough and suitable for the engineering designs.

Abstract:A series of bending tests of thin-walled concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubes(CFST) were presented in this study. A total of 4 specimens were tested, two square specimens and two rectangular specimens, with width to wall thickness ratio ranging from 50 to 100. The failure mode and ultimate capacity of test specimens were obtained. A novel nonlinear analytical model was developed for the hin-walled CFSTs under bending. Nonlinear constitutive models of the confined concrete and steel tube, corner strength enhancement of the steel cross-sections, welding residual stress and local buckling were considered in the developed model. The predicted capacity calculated using the model proposed and it si shown that the model predictions agreed with the test result well. In addition, predictions from current AISC standard, Eurocode 4 and model proposed by other researcher were also compared with the test results.

Abstract:This paper focus on the compressive behaviour of self-compacting concrete-filled weather steel tube stub columns. The experimental investigation includes the material tests of concrete and steel used in the test specimens, compression tests on stub columns, and material tests of concrete core taken from concrete-filled steel tubes. The tested specimens are thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes having the square and X cross section. The test results indicates that the self-compacting concrete could effectively filled the steel tubes and has required compressive strengths. Local buckling occurs in the steel tubs when the thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes under compression. The intermediate stiffener could effectively enhance the local buckling resistance ability of the thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes.

Abstract:The eccentric compressive performance of circular CFST columns with latticed annular steel was studied through eccentric loading tests on three specimens with a slenderness ratio of 48. The Finite Element (FE) analysis, incorporating boundary conditions and material constitutive models consistent with the experimental setup, exhibited a high degree of concordance with the experimental findings. The validated FE model comprehensively investigated the confine effect of latticed annular steel on core concrete under eccentric compression, while also exploring the influence of different configurations of embedded steel skeletons on composite columns. Furthermore, it assessed and quantified the effects of the confinement factor of the steel tube, reinforcement ratio of the latticed annular steel, and slenderness ratio (lambda) on the ultimate bearing capacity of this composite structure at different load eccentricities ratio (e0/r). The relationship between balance eccentricity ratio and confinement factor has been established. By comparing the axial force-bending (Nu-Mu) interaction diagrams generated by different design rules, it is observed that the formulas in AISC 360-10 and Eurocode 4 tend to exhibit a conservative approach, while the formulas in DL/T 5629-2021 demonstrate a lack of conservatism. Finally, a proposal for a set of trilinear Nu-Mu interaction equations is made, which can yield more accurate results.

Abstract:A series of stub column tests were performed on thin-walled circle concrete-filled tubes.The test specimens includes hollow steel tubes and concrete-filled tubes.Material tests were also performed on the self-compacting concrete and weather steel used in the test specimens.Test results of experimental phenomenonf,ailure modes and load-displacement curves were recorded and analyzed.The test results indicates that the self-compacting concrete could effectively filled the steel tubes and has required compressive strengths.The failed thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes specimens shows obvious local buckling deformation.The specimen strengths were compared with design strengths.

Experimental study on axial compressive strength of concrete filled composite steel tube short columns

Abstract:To study the axial compressive strength of the concrete filled composite steel tube short column which is the concrete filled square steel tube reinforced with a central circular steel tube,10 specimens were tested under the axial compressive loading.Test results indicated that at the peak axial load the square steel tube had yielded in the vertical direction and did not yield in the lateral direction;the specimens failed in local buckling and tearing of square steel tube,crushing of concrete between the square steel tube and the circular steel tube.For most of the specimens even the longitudinal average strain reached 0.11,the residual strength remained more than 70% of the peak compressive strength.The calculated compressive stiffness was approximately 83.6% of the measured values on the average.Assuming that the steel tubes do not contribute lateral confinement to the concrete,but provides compressive strength only,the predicted compressive strengths of the specimens has good agreement with the test results.

Abstract:In order to study the mechanical mechanism of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs) under axial compression, a theoretical model for analysing the behaviour of axially loaded CFST columns is presented in this paper. The model is derived from the theory of elasto-plasticity, non-linear elastic mechanics and materials properties. Based on a related numerical program, analytical results were compared with experimental data. The complete load–deformation relationship of specimens, steel tube stress, performance of the confined core concrete and the interaction between the outer tube and the core concrete were investigated. The analytical results indicated that this model is able to capture the mechanical behaviour of concrete-filled circular steel tubes. It was found that the axial and circumferential stresses of the steel tubes behaved non-linearly during the loading history. It was concluded that the behaviour of the confined core concrete was significantly influenced by the confining pressure. The constraining factor had an important effect on the improvement of the core concrete strength. The analytical results also indicated that the axial stress–strain relationship of concrete under constant confinement was not appropriate for the core concrete in CFST specimens. Finally, a comparison between the confining pressure and the confined concrete response is presented.

Abstract:In this paper, axial compressive loading test and non-linear finite element analysis of 10 short composite-sectioned concrete filled steel tubular column specimens are introduced. The test results indicate that the failure modes of all the specimens are similar, the specimens have high axial compressive strength and large deformation capacity. The calculated axial compressive strength of the specimens, assuming that the circle steel tube provides the lateral confinement to the core concrete and the square steel tube provides compressive strength without contributing lateral confinement to the concrete, has good agreement with the measured strength. The vertical load-strain curves, the axial compressive strength and the failure mode obtained by the non-linear finite element analysis of specimens have good agreement with the test results.

Abstract:Test results on concrete-filled square steel tubular stub columns with longitudinal inner and outer welded stiffeners under concentric compression are presented in this paper. A longitudinal stiffener was provided at each side of the tube. The main experimental parameters considered were the width-to-thickness ratio and stiffener rigidity. Moreover, empty tubes with or without stiffeners, as well as unstiffened concrete-filled square steel, tubes were also tested for comparison. Results from the study indicated that, compressive load of the composite stub columns was increased when stiffeners were provided. The stiffeners can effectively delay the local buckling of the tube, as well as improve the lateral confinement on concrete core.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on the shear behavior of steel tube confined concrete (STCC) stub columns subjected to compressive and bending forces. 26 specimens were tested to investigate the shear behavior. Parameters for the test were steel tube thickness, concrete cube strength, shear span ratio, axial compression stress-to-strength ratio and eccentricity. Their effects on the shear capacity of STCC columns were investigated. The failure mode, shear load-strain curve, shear load-midspan deflection curve and shear capacity of specimens subjected to different bending moment were obtained from the test. Based on the parametric study, a formula for calculating the shear capacity of STCC columns subjected to compressive and bending forces was derived. The comparison between calculated and experimental shear capacity values shows good agreement and the calculated results are at the safe side.

Abstract:The axial compression behavior of square CFSTs (concrete-filled steel tubes) reinforced with internal latticed steel angles was investigated in this study, and the test results including load-displacement and load-strain behavior, failure modes, and ultimate load were obtained. The experimental results demonstrated that the steel angles exerted an additional confining effect on the enclosed concrete, and altered the stress distributions of the adjacent concrete. The corresponding finite element model was established subsequent to the experiment, and the analysis and discussion of the axial compression mechanisms was conducted. The parametric analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of main parameters on the load-displacement behavior, and the analysis results revealed that the concrete made the highest contribution to the ultimate load. Additionally, the formulas for calculating the ultimate load were proposed according to the superposition method, and the calculation results demonstrated that the design formula derives from the unified theory of CFSTs exhibit enhanced accuracy and reduced deviation. Finally, a reliability analysis was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed design formula, and the analysis results indicated the calculated reliability index decreases with an increase in the steel ratio, and for specimens with a higher steel ratio, a lower yield strength of steel tube leads to a lower reliability index.

Abstract:A new type of steel tube confined concrete columns (STCC) in which the outer steel tube only confines the core concrete and does not directly bear the axial load. Based on this, a new type of steel tube confined concrete with a circular hollow section (STCC-CHS) column was presented in this article. It demonstrated high strength and relatively light weight, high economic efficiency and promises easy installation. Axial compression tests were conducted to quantify the effects of the diameter-thickness ratio and the hollow ratio on the failure modes, the ultimate strength in axial compression, strain and stiffness. Constraint effects and ductility were also analyzed. The test results show that the outer steel tube effectively delays local buckling failure. The smaller the hollow ratio and the smaller the diameter-thickness ratio, the greater a column's bearing capacity. The observed ultimate compressive strength is compared with STCC and CFDST components. The experimental data are used to test the utility of the recommended formulas for predicting the axial bearing capacity of such columns, with several different models of the confined concrete strength.

Abstract:Six stub columns subjected to axial compression are carried out. An attempt is made to know difference of results by different design codes including DL/T5085-1999(1999), GJB4142-2000(2001), AIJ (1997), EC4( 1994), LRFD(1999) and 685400(1979). The research shows that self-compaction concrete filled steel tubes have good bearing capacity. All results are somewhat conserved, but the results of codes DL/15085-1999(1999), GJB4142-2000(2001), BS5400(1979) and Fujian local standard are in good agreement with those of the test. They are suitable to be adopted to design and calculate the bearing capacity of self-compaction concrete-filled steel tube stub columns.
