Abstract:The carbonation models and test methods for concrete are reviewed,and their principles, application scopes, merits and shortcomings are analyzed. Because of the limitations of traditional research methods, it is difficalt to liking the lab results with the insitu test results. A new methad, which take the deterioration indicator of concrete as the main factor, build up the new concept for research the durability of concrete, i. e. the gas diffusion coefficient, pH value and the content of alkali substances can reflect the degree of carbonation and the deterioration trend of coveral concrete. Meanwhile, a new non-destructive test methods will set up a bridge between the lab and the in-situ research. Therefor, based on test rezults of the permeability and the alkali coutent of coveral concrete, and using of a suitable carbontion model, a relationship between the deleriaration degree of concrete properties and the parameters of concrete, such as permeability ,alkali content, etc. will be built up. And that will make the evaluation of concrete durability more objective.
Impact of Carbonation on the Chloride Diffusivity in Concrete: Experiment, Analysis and Application

Abstract:This paper addresses the impact of carbonation on the chloride diffusivity in concrete through experimental and theoretical analysis. Chloride ingress tests were performed on concretes with OPC and complex binders (SZC) with/without carbonation, and the apparent chloride diffusivity was regressed with an enhanced diffusion model. Then, the impact of surface carbonation on the chloride ingress was investigated in terms of such influential factors as the pore structure, the chloride sorption, and the pore solution chemistry. Finally the results are applied to a design case of composite slabs exposed to marine atmosphere. The study shows that: (1) after carbonation, chloride sorption of OPC concretes is more affected than SZC concretes with complex binders and about 50% of sorption capacity is left for SZC concretes after carbonation; (2) the carbonation promotes the chloride diffusion, increasing the apparent chloride diffusivity by up to 80%, highlighting the impact of pore structure change on chloride diffusivity; (3) the durability requirements should consider the influence of surface carbonation for concrete exposed to marine air-borne salts but sheltered from natural precipitation.

Abstract:In this paper, chloride diffusion coefficients in concrete were experimented and studied in deferent water cement ratio by the alternating current bridge method and the NEL method and natural dispersion method. The general methods to evaluate chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete are briefly introduced, and simultaneously, advantages and disadvantages of these methods have been figured out. The correlation relationship between chloride diffusion coefficients and water cement ratio and porosity and compressive strength of concrete have been analyzed and studied based on the results of these tests, analyzed results show that appraisement of the three testing methods is different, and that'll be helpful and useful to select testing methods for chloride diffusion coefficient evaluation at different state.

Abstract:In this paper an experimental study is presented on the interaction between concrete carbonation and chloride attack. The experiments are carried out on chloride-contaminated cement pastes that have been exposed to a carbon dioxide environment. Free and total chloride contents at different carbonation times are measured in the tested specimens using traditional leaching and acid-soluble methods. Bound chloride contents are calculated from the measured total and free chlorides. The experimental data show that the carbonation of cement paste results in a release of bound chlorides, which is related to not only the decomposition of Friedel's salt, but also the decomposition of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gel. Based on the obtained experimental results, a numerical model is also developed for simulating the carbonation process of the chloride-contaminated cement paste. The model can be used to explain how the bound chlorides are released in a chloride-contaminated cement paste under the influence of carbonation reactions.

Abstract:In this paper, a comprehensive investigation regarding the loading effects on chloride diffusion in saturated concrete is reported. It involves both theoretical and experimental aspects, towards contributing to the service-life prediction of infrastructure under chloride attack. A revised chloride diffusion model is proposed based on the modified Fick's second law with an emphasis on the loading effects. In particular, this influence is quantified using a newly-introduced damage effect factor defined by tortuosity and constrictivity of damaged concrete. This model is capable of predicting the chloride profiles in concrete under different loading states, regardless of whether it is damaged or undamaged. Meanwhile, a series of experimental studies were extensively operated in order to analyze the influence of loading on chloride diffusion process. Two types of mixtures (i.e. ordinary concrete and ordinary concrete mixed with slag) were investigated for chloride diffusion tests under different natures (i.e. compressive and tensile loads) and magnitudes of loads. Totally four levels of loads were applied to further correlate the relation between chloride diffusivities and associated strain values. Finally, two groups of test data with different tensile strain were adopted to validate the theoretical model. It shows that the model is reasonable and the numerical result is adequately accurate.

Abstract:Due to the demand for carbon neutrality, concrete carbonation has been reconsidered as an interesting topic because of its potential for capturing CO 2 from the atmosphere. Concrete carbonation can significantly modify the chemical and microstructure properties of concrete and thus will have important effects on chloride diffusion. This paper presents a chloride diffusion model in which the concrete cover is divided into three different zones, each with their own defined porosity and chloride binding isotherm. One is the fully carbonated concrete near the surface, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be obtained from the experimental data of fully carbonated concrete. One is the uncarbonated concrete near the reinforcement, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be obtained from the experimental data of normal concrete. One is the transition zone between the fully carbonated and uncarbonated concretes, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be assumed to vary continuously from the carbonated concrete to uncarbonated concrete. To validate the present model, the comparison of the present model with published experimental results is also provided, which demonstrates the importance of considering different zones in chloride diffusion model when the concrete has a carbonated layer near the surface.

Abstract:This paper investigates the combined action of carbonation and chloride ingress in concrete under stable moisture state. The chloride profile is solved through a moving boundary problem, assuming a carbonation front, different chloride diffusivities for carbonated and intact zones, and a constant surface concentration. Then, the study performs parameter analysis on the chloride profile, addresses the time-dependence of chloride diffusivity, and applies the model to typical design cases. The results on OPC reference concretes indicate that: (1) the carbonation generally leads to the increase of chloride diffusivity due to the combined effects of pore filling, pore saturation rise and chloride sorption change; (2) the impact of carbonation on chloride diffusion become significant only in low and medium ranges of pore saturation degree; (3) The time dependence of diffusivity is important for durability requirements and the combined action should be considered as the environmental relative humidity is around 60%.

Abstract:Porosity evolution caused by electrochemical chloride removal (ECR) process can affect the transport behaviour of concrete and vice versa. The main task in this investigation is to quantitatively understand the porosity evolution effect on ECR process, and find a more accurate model that gives good correlation with the experimental results concerning the ionic transport in concrete during the ECR. The porosity of the concrete near the cathode and anode were measured, before and after ECR treatment (mainly 7 days, 15 days and 30 days). A method to analyse and calculate the porosity profiles was proposed according to the ECR experimental data. The penetration and leaching of ionic species in concrete are studied by using a finite element procedure based on the Nernst-Planck equations. The proposed method is capable of reducing the numerical modelling error of the chloride profile in concrete during the ECR. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Owing to its importance in the durability assessment and design of reinforced concrete structures exposed to chloride-ladden environments, it is essential to determine the chloride diffusivity in concrete. This paper presents a numerical method for predicting the chloride diffusivity in concrete with aggregate shape effect. To reduce the number of elements, an equivalent aggregate model is constituted by modeling the aggregate as inclusion and the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) as matrix and the chloride diffusivity in equivalent aggregate is derived analytically. Based on the simulated mesostructure of concrete, the lattice model is applied to the analysis of chloride diffusion in concrete. In this analysis, the physical properties of each phase constituent are taken into account in the formation of element matrix of bar elements. After the validity of the developed numerical method is verified with two independent sets of experimental results, the effect of aggregate shape on the chloride diffusivity in concrete is evaluated in a quantitative manner. It is found that, when the aspect ratio of elliptical aggregate particles increases from 1 to 3, the chloride diffusivity in concrete decreases by 6.48%, 8.94%, and 10.67% for a given chloride diffusivity ratio of ITZ to cement paste at 2, 6, and 10, respectively. The paper concludes that the numerical method developed in the paper can predict the chloride diffusivity in concrete with an average relative error smaller than 7% for the two selected verification examples.

Abstract:Existing concrete in cold or coastal regions is attacked by chloride penetration under freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). The combined deterioration process accelerate the damage evolution of concrete and reduces the service life of concrete structures. This paper presents a mesoscopic numerical model, which is 2-D and 3-phases, to investigate the mechanism of chloride diffusion under FTCs in a quantitative manner. Unlike most of existing models, the present model considers the FTCs-induced damage affected chloride diffusion by adopting a time-dependent variable of porosity, which can not only reflect how freeze-thaw action affects the concrete pore structure, but also couple the freeze-thaw process together with the chloride diffusion process at time scale. The reliability of the proposed model is validated against a third-party experiment. Based on the obtained concentration distribution profiles, a series of significant influencing factors, i.e., w/c ratio, ITZ effects, external chloride concentration, aggregate volume fraction and inner temperature are clarified. A grey relational analysis is further conducted to rank the correlative degrees of influencing factors on diffusivity of chloride under FTCs. The findings of this study can bring insights to the preparation technique of concrete in cold or coastal regions as well as the durability prediction on existing concrete structures suffering chloride attack and freeze-thaw action.

Abstract:Based on three-dimensional distributions of cement particles, cement hydration was simulated to obtain the hydrate content and the pore structure of cement paste. Additionally, the porosity of mortar and concrete was obtained by considering aggregate inclusion and interfacial transition zones (ITZ). Then, a coupled model for heat transfer, moisture transport and carbonation in cement-based materials was established. The experimental carbonation results agreed well with the simulated results for mortars and concretes with different water-cement ratios. The carbonation reaction front was far beyond the complete carbonation depth. The aggregate dilution had a more significant effect on carbonation than the ITZ did. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Coastal concrete bridges will suffer from deterioration of RC structural performance and resistance attenuation because of the chloride penetration and other environment factors.This article discusses current different chloride diffusion models and puts forward the revised model of chloride diffusion in concrete bridge by considering the complex action of load influence and chloride-binding capacity.Comparison of numerical predicted values and relative experimental tests show the presented chloride diffusion model to be more accurate.It provides a theoretical basis for the performance assessment and accurate prediction of the remaining life of highway concrete bridges.
A Reaction-Diffusion Modeling of Carbonation Process in Self-Compacting Concrete

Abstract:In this paper, a reaction-diffusion model of carbonation process in self-compacting concrete (SCC) was realized with a consideration of multi-field couplings. Various effects from environmental conditions, e.g. ambient temperature, relative humidity, carbonation reaction, were incorporated into a numerical simulation proposed by ANSYS. In addition, the carbonation process of SCC was experimentally investigated and compared with a conventionally vibrated concrete (CVC). It is found that SCC has a higher carbonation resistance than CVC with a comparable compressive strength. The numerical solution analysis agrees well with the test results, indicating that the proposed model is appropriate to calculate and predict the carbonation process in SCC. The parameters sensitivity analysis also shows that the carbon dioxide diffusion coefficient and moisture field are essentially crucial to the carbonation process in SCC.

Abstract:The relationship between the pore characteristics and the chloride diffusion coefficient of mortar was investigated in this paper. Mortars with different water-cement ratios and aggregate volume fractions were prepared. The chloride diffusion coefficient was measured by the salt-saturated conductivity method (NEL). The pore size distribution was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The sensitivity analysis indicates that the chloride diffusion coefficient is better correlated with the capillary porosity. Based on the general effective media (GEM) model, the chloride diffusion coefficient of the C-S-H gel was calculated. On this basis, the relationship between the chloride diffusion coefficient of the C-S-H gel and the gel porosity was fitted and the key parameters were obtained. Based on the gel porosity and capillary porosity, a three-phase model was proposed to predict the diffusion coefficient of concrete, and the prediction results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The carbonation is a fundamental durability process for concrete structures exposed to nearly all environments. In air-borne chloride environments, the chloride ingress occurs simultaneously with the carbonation, constituting a multi-phase and multi-species transport-reaction problem. This paper regards concrete as a reactive porous medium partially saturated by pore solution and addresses this problem through a comprehensive transport-reaction model taking into account the dissociation and dissolution–precipitation equilibria in pore solution, transport of gas and aqueous phases and local electrical field. Especially the incongruent dissolution of C–S–H is addressed, a coating-reaction kinetics is assumed for the CH carbonation and new chloride adsorption laws are used upon carbonation of C–S–H. The established model is solved through finite volume method and validated by laboratory experiments of chloride ingress in carbonated OPC concretes. The parametric analysis for concurrent carbonation and chloride ingress under constant relative humidity shows that: (1) the concurrent carbonation will globally promote the chloride ingress and the involved corrosion risk for embedded steel; (2) the significant RH range for this carbonation impact will be on medium levels around 75%; (3) the concretes incorporating SCMs, especially in large quantities, will behave differently to the influence of carbonation. Accordingly, the concurrent carbonation should be considered in appropriate way in durability design against chloride ingress.

Abstract:In actual engineering, the concrete structure is subjected to normal stress and shear stress, which accelerates the deterioration of durability.However, the law of chloride ion transport under shear stress in concrete structures is rarely reported.The concrete beams were subjected to long period shear loading by innovative loading method.The law of chloride ion transport under shear stress in concrete structures was studied.The results show that shear would increase the permeability of the concrete structure, with the increasing of load level, chloride ion diffusion coefficient increased.Finally, based on the experimental datum, the mathematical model of chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete specimens under shear stress state is established, and the effect of shear stress on the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion in concrete is analyzed.

Abstract:Concrete-to-concrete interfaces present both in new and existing construction, are commonly regarded as the weak link. Durability research of interfaces is a vital prerequisite for structural rehabilitation and strengthening applications under marine and coastal environments. Hence, to clarify the chloride ion transport behavior be-tween the new-old concrete composite system and its constituents, microstructural characteristics of the in-terfaces with various preparation methods were determined via field emission scanning electron microscopy. Then, the time-dependent diffusion chloride ion penetration together with its steady-state concentration distri-bution evaluated by using AgNO3 chromogenic, electron microprobe, and energy spectrum methods, as well as the numerical simulation based on the real interface roughness from the 3D laser scanning optical system. Results show that microcracks and a large amount of CaCO3 precipitations were formed in the concrete-to-concrete interface, where its porosity was higher compared to that of the matrix and interface transition zone around coarse aggregate; Therefore, the interface regions have higher tortuosity of water transport channel and strengthen the solution absorption rate, resulting in the internal chloride ions not only diffuse deeper perpen-dicular to the exposed surface but also ingress into the concrete on both sides as the concentration gradient simultaneously, leading to a "diffusion peak" formation. Furthermore, the effects of groove characteristics (such as orientations, clearance, width, and depth) on chloride transport were modeling evaluated in this study, in which the interfacial relationship could be optimized setting the reasonable groove and achieving the goal of durability equivalent to the cast-in-place structure.
Numerical Simulation of Steel Corrosion in Chloride Contaminated Concrete

Abstract:Corrosion is one of the main reasons for the degradation of reinforced concrete structures, especially of those exposed to a chloride-contaminated environment. To study the effect of chloride ions on the corrosion of steel embedded in concrete, two electrochemical parameters, namely, the anodic Tafel slope and potential, were theoretically analyzed and semi-empirically modified by the concentration of chloride ions in concrete. Subsequently, a numerical model that couples the mass transport and electrochemical corrosion process was established to simulate the transport of chloride ions and the evolution of steel corrosion that occurred simultaneously in the concrete. Based on the proposed numerical model that incorporated the appropriate electrochemical parameters, the corrosion current density and corrosion potential were obtained numerically and they coincided well with the experimental data. Finally, the proposed model was applied to study the chloride ion distribution as well as the corrosion current density around the cross-section and circumference of the steel bar in concrete members with single or multiple steel bars. The results indicate that the proposed numerical modelling method can be used to predict the corrosion-initiation time, as well as the development of the morphology of the corrosion profile of steel bars in concrete structures.
