Abstract:Nickel-based GH3536 alloy exhibits high strength but low ductility when produced by selective laser melting (SLM), which hinders its widespread application in aerospace. This paper employed a 'two-step ' method of heat treatment to optimize the microstructure of the SLM GH3536 alloy and investigated the mechanical properties. Tensile tests were conducted on SLM GH3536 alloy before and after heat treatment at 750 degrees C, using an in -situ high-temperature tensile stage. The relationship between the microstructural evolution and deformation behavior of the alloys was investigated by combining the in -situ tensile experiments and crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM). The results suggested that the elongation can be increased by 80% without a significant reduction in tensile strength. The improved elongation is attributed to the complete recrystallization, formation of annealed twins and serrated grain boundaries after heat treatment. The study also investigated the deformation behavior and fracture mode of the alloy before and after heat treatment. Discussion was done on the influence of the microstructure, particularly the twin and serrated grain boundaries on the alloy ' s plastic deformation. This study enhanced the understanding of plastic deformation of SLM GH3536 alloy and provided a valuable reference for the design and post-treatment of superalloy.

Abstract:This study focused on modifying heat treatment schemes to enhance the mechanical properties of sand cast Al–2Li–2Cu–0.5Mg–0.2Sc–0.2Zr alloy. Different three-stage solution treatment schemes ((460 °C, 32 h) + (520 °C, 24 h) + (530/540/550 °C, 4/12/24/32 h)) and aging temperatures (125, 175, 225 °C) were designed for comparison. The microstructure evolutions were analyzed by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the three-stage solution treatment of (460 °C, 32 h) + (520 °C, 24 h) + (530 °C, 12 h) could dissolve most of the secondary phases. The TEM results illustrated that fine δ’(Al3Li) particles were homogeneously distributed in the matrix after aging at 175 °C for 8 h, accompanied by a small amount of lath-shaped S′(Al2CuMg) and plate-like T 1(Al2CuLi) phases. The best comprehensive properties of yield strength of 376 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 458 MPa and elongation of 4.1% were obtained by the optimal heat treatment scheme ((460 °C, 32 h) + (520 °C, 24 h) + (530 °C, 12 h) + (175 °C, 8 h)).

Abstract:Homogenization treatment reduces elemental microsegregation and promotes homogeneous solute distribution, thereby enhancing microstructural homogeneity and mechanical properties. This study employed optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and Vickers microhardness tester to systematically investigate the microstructural evolution, compositional distribution and microhardness of as-cast 7075 Al alloy during homogenization. Significant dendritic microsegregation was observed in the as-cast alloy, particularly with Cu, Mg and Zn concentrated along grain boundaries and dendritic cores. As homogenization temperature and holding times increased, dendritic structures gradually diminished, and non-equilibrium phases dissolved into the matrix. At 465°C for 24 h, the second-phase area decreased from 6.67% to 1.58%, and the grain boundary width reduced from 4.47 μm to 2.29 μm. After further homogenization at 475°C for 4 h, the grain boundary width is approximately 0.68 μm, and the area fraction of the second phase is only 0.65%. Initially, the dissolution of low-melting non-equilibrium phases decreases microhardness. Longer homogenization and cooling processes cause phase transformations, slightly increasing and stabilizing hardness. The optimal double-stage homogenization treatment achieved a homogeneous microstructure. Diffusion kinetics during homogenization revealed that the redistribution of alloying elements, driven by atomic diffusion, effectively reduces elemental microsegregation and optimizes processing parameters.

Abstract:Microstructure evolution during the homogenization heat treatment of an Al-Zn-Cu-Mg (AA7475, which is typically used for the manufacture of aircraft design) alloy, was investigated using a combination of light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Ingots after different types (one-or two-steps treatments) of temperatures (from 380 to 510 °C) of homogenization and cooling conditions (cooling with an air or quenching to water) were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of ingot presents a typical microstructure with some isolated Al 7 Cu 2 Fe particles, which after homogenization almost remains in both the size and morphology. The structure ingot after homogenization below 400 °C contains secondary phases, based on η (MgZn 2 ), S (Al 2 CuMg) and T (Al 2 Mg 3 Zn 3 ) are distributed along the grain boundary. In the T (Al 2 Mg 3 Zn 3 ) phase copper dissolves up to 30 wt.%. Then the increase in temperature and the complication of heat treatment of homogenization, which led to the complication of the kinetics of the evolution of inter-dendritic phases, were found. The two-steps homogenization has a better effect than a single homogenization, as its completely dissolution of non-equilibrium phases was established.

Abstract:Al–Cu–Li alloy is a huge potential alloy for aerospace industry due to its low density and excellent comprehensive performances. In this study, the microstructures and mechanical properties of a novel cast Al–Cu–Li alloy during the heat treatment were investigated. Results showed that most of the secondary phases along grain boundaries in as-cast state were dissolved into the Al matrix after homogenization and solution treatment, while the Cu-rich phases were slightly segregated once again on grain boundaries after aging. A relatively good combination of strength and ductility (average ultimate tensile strength of 430 MPa and elongation of 8.9%) was obtained after natural aging. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results revealed that there was a complicated precipitate distribution in this cast alloy after natural aging. Compared with the similar alloys which introduced dislocations before aging, the density of T1 (Al2CuLi) phases was decreased but the size was increased. The low volume fraction of δ′ phase, medium density of needle-shaped precipitates and relativity narrow precipitates-free zone with varying widths near grain boundary are the reasons accounting for the improvement of performances.Graphic abstract

Abstract:In this study, the effects of heat treatment on the microstructure and strength (micro-hardness) of an aluminum–lithium (Al-Li) base alloy containing copper (Cu) and scandium (Sc) were investigated, with a view to enhancing the alloy performance for aerospace applications. The heat treatment conditions were investigated to understand the precipitation behavior and the mechanisms involved in strengthening. Aging was carried out at temperatures of 130 °C and 150 °C for aging times of 1 h, 2.5 h, 5 h, 10 h, 15 h, 25 h, 35 h, and 45 h at each temperature for Al-Li alloy and at 160 °C, 180 °C, and 200 °C for aging times of 5 h, 10 h, 15 h, 20 h, 25 h, and 30 h at each temperature for Al-Li-Cu and Al-Li-Cu-Sc alloys. The investigation revealed that both solution heat treatment and artificial aging had a notable impact on strengthening the hardness of the alloy. This effect was attributed to the characteristics of the precipitates, including their type, size, number density, and distribution. The addition of copper (Cu) and scandium (Sc) was observed to have an impact on grain size refinement, while Cu addition specifically affected the precipitation behavior of the alloy. It led to remarkable changes in the number density, size, and distribution of T1 (Al2CuLi) and θ' (Al2Cu) phases. As a result, the hardness of the alloy was significantly improved after the addition of Cu and Sc, in comparison with the base Al-Li alloy. The best heat treatment process was determined as: 580 °C/1 h solution treatment +150 °C/45 h artificial aging for Al-Li alloy and 505 °C/5 h solution treatment +180 °C/20 h artificial aging for Al-Li-Cu and Al-Li-Cu-Sc alloys.

Abstract:The effects of homogenization treatment of Mg-8Li-3Al-Y alloy were investigated by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and universal testing machine. The experiment results indicated that there existed five phases in the as-cast alloy: alpha, beta, Al2Y, AlLi and MgAlLi2. The spheroidized a phase grew gradually and its microstructure and composition became homogeneous when it was treated at 300 degrees C for 12 h. Meanwhile, the alloy has a good comprehensive mechanical property compared with other homogenization schedules. So, a homogenization treatment at 300 degrees C for 12 h was determined to be the optimal homogenization treatment for Mg-8Li-3Al-Y alloy. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution during homogenization of aluminum 6063 billet has been investigated in this work. DSC was used to observe thermal transition from room temperature to 600 °C. Three transition temperature ranges, 218-353, 381-473, and 498-581 °C, were observed. These temperature ranges were assigned as three transformation stages occurring during homogenization. The finish transformation temperatures were selected for conducting isothermal treatments. In the first transformation stage, plate-like intermetallics (β) became thinner and fine black particles consisting of Mg and Si precipitated within matrix leading to Mg depletion from the matrix. The 353 °C heat-treated specimen showed lowest hardness and room temperature tensile strength probably due to Mg deficiency for solid solution strengthening. The 473 °C heat-treated specimen showed low hardness and room temperature tensile strength. In the third stage (581 °C isothermal treatment), globular intermetallics (α) distributed all over the matrix and most fine black particles underwent dissolution. Mg was found to dissolve back to the matrix. The 581 °C heat-treated specimen showed the highest hardness and room temperature tensile strength among all heat-treated specimens. All isothermally heat-treated specimens were also subject to tensile test at 470 °C to understand their behavior at the pre-heating temperature of extrusion commonly used as industrial practice. It was found that the specimens showed the flow stresses from the highest to the lowest as follows: the as-cast, the isothermally treated at 353, 473, and 581 °C, respectively. The flow stresses at 470 °C depended on the morphology and distribution of intermetallics due to isothermal temperatures. The isothermal treatment at 581 °C, producing globular intermetallics (α) all over the grains and lowest flow stress, is recommended for homogenization of aluminum 6063 billets. Causes responsible for such microstructural changes and mechanical properties during the three stages are discussed in this study.

Abstract:The advantages of additive manufacturing integrated molding have increased its use in aerospace applications. Heat treatment is crucial in changing the microstructure and improving the mechanical properties of additively manufactured samples. Herein, the effects of different heat treatment temperatures (750 °C - 1050 °C) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of additive manufacturing Ti65 alloys were systematically investigated. Concretely, the heat treatment in different temperature ranges led to significant variation in microstructure. HT-1050 specimens with widmanstatten microstructure exhibited high microhardness (415 HV), lowest wear rate (2.19 × 10 3 mm 3 /N × min), and superior frictional wear resistance. A detailed examination of the worn surfaces, considering the variations in the applied load, indicated that the predominant wear mechanisms during the sliding process were abrasion, delamination, oxidation, and adhesion. The as-deposited specimens' tensile strength and total elongation were 1115 ± 10 MPa and 2.1 ± 0.6 %, respectively. The elongation of the specimens increased significantly after heat treatment. The total elongation of the HT-1050 increased by 116 % compared to the as-deposited and had favorable strength-plasticity. This work elucidates the fundamental mechanisms underlying the effects of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of alloys.

Abstract:The effect of homogenization process on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the twin-roll casted (TRC) 8006 alloy strip during various thermomechanical processing was systematically studied by optical microscope, tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) characterizations. The results show that the coarse-grained layer is easily activated at the strip surface due to the severe microstructure gradient throughout the entire strip, which is related to the accumulation of high storage energy at the strip surface. With the increasing homogenization temperature, the coarse-grained layer increases and the dendrite network generally dissolves, broken and spheroidized, which produce a fully recrystallized grains with discrete distributed second phase particles after homogenization at 580 °C. After cold rolling and final annealing, depending on the homogenization temperatures, the 1 mm sheets exhibit three- or five- layer sandwich structure. This phenomenon is mainly caused by the uneven distribution of second phase particles and deformation levels at the surface and center regions of the sheets. Increasing the homogenization temperature can reduce the tensile strength but increase the elongation of the 1 mm annealed sheet due to the different grain and second phase distributions. Homogenization of 540 °C/3 h is selected as the optimum process as it provides good combination of high strength, good elongation and rather thin coarse-grained layer.

Abstract:In the current work, a novel complex concentrated aluminum alloy is designed and studied. In order to investigate the unknown region of the multicomponent phase diagrams, thermo-physical parameters and the CALPHAD method were used to understand the phase formation of the Al58Mg18Zn12Cu5Si7 at.% (Al47.4Mg13.3Zn23.8Cu9.6Si6wt.%) alloy with a low-density of 2.63 g/cm3. The CALPHAD methodology showed good agreement with both the investigated microstructure and the thermodynamic parameters. The designed alloy was manufactured using an induction furnace and pour mold casting process. This study avoids the use of expensive, dangerous or scarce alloying elements and focuses instead on the utilization of widely available relatively cheaper elements. The microstructural evolution as a function of the heat-treatment was studied by means of different microstructural characterization techniques. The hardness, compressive strength and electrical conductivity of the as-cast and heat-treated alloy at room temperature were studied and correlated with the previously characterized microstructure. The alloy is characterized by a multiphase microstructure with major α-Al matrix reinforced with various secondary phases. In terms of mechanical properties, the developed alloy exhibited a high hardness value of 249 Vickers and compressive strength of 588 MPa. The present work provides a valuable insight for researchers, who aim to design and produce industry-like Aluminum based complex concentrated alloys (CCAs).

Abstract:The modified homogenization process has garnered increasing interest in the high-alloyed materials preparation owing to its effectiveness in mitigating segregation and enhancing properties. In this work, the effects of homogenization treatment on the intermetallic phases, solidification structure and mechanical properties of a novel Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Y alloy are investigated. The results indicate that the Al 8 Cu 4 Y phase is formed in the matrix and maintains steady during homogenization. It is confirmed that lower homogenization temperature (400 °C) can promote Al 3 Zr nucleation, while higher temperature (460 °C) can accelerate the dissolution of MgZn 2 phase owing to a higher diffusion coefficient. Compared with single homogenization treatment, a two-stage homogenization (400 °C/16 h + 460 °C/24 h) can achieve a combination result of massive MgZn 2 phases dissolution and fine Al 3 Zr dispersoids precipitation in the alloy. Moreover, the mean grain size ranges from 166.1 to 154.5 μm and its misorientation angle ranges from 39.9 to 40.9° during homogenization, suggesting a certain thermal stability for Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Y alloy. In addition, Vickers hardness and electrical conductivity show a linear relation with the Zn, Mg and Cu elemental content in the matrix. The alloy demonstrates an improved tensile strength after homogenization, which is mainly related to MgZn 2 dissolution and Al 3 Zr precipitation.

Abstract:Today, 7xxx aluminum alloys are widely used in aerospace and other fields due to their excellent properties such as low density, high specific strength, and good processing performance. The heat treatment process of 7xxx aluminum alloy is crucial in controlling the strengthening phases and grain size, which is a significant way to enhance the alloy's performance. In this study, solution heat treatment tests of 7050 aluminum alloys were carried out at different temperatures, ranging from 440 °C to 470 °C, with a holding time ranging from 0.5 h to 8 h, using a DIL 805A thermomechanical test machine. The microstructural evolution during the solution heat treatment was characterized using an optical microscope (OM), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The effects of the solution parameters on the alloy's microhardness were analyzed using a digital Vickers microhardness tester. According to the ASTM E112-13 standard, The Anelli grain growth models were established to illustrate the grain size evolution during solution heat treatment, and a modified Anelli grain growth model was established. The results indicated that the grain size significantly increases with the increase in the solution heat treatment time and temperature. The Anelli grain growth model can illustrate the phenomenon of grain growth more accurately in the solution heat treatment process of 7050 aluminum alloy. It was found that prolonging the time and elevating the temperature of the solution heat treatment reduced the microhardness of the aluminum alloy because of the dissolution of the precipitates.

Abstract:In this study, a novel Sc/Zr/Ti/Er-modified 2219 aluminum alloy was designed and wall-shaped components were then fabricated by wire-arc directed energy deposition (DED). Due to the heterogeneous nucleation promoted by primary Al 3 X dispersoids, the as-deposited alloy exhibits a highly equiaxed fine grain structure. Two heat treatment schedules were conducted to tailor the strength and thermal stability of the alloy. Compared with the classical T6 heat treatment, the additional homogenization step before the T6 heat treatment (HT6) prefabricated more Al 3 X dispersoids, which indirectly promoted the transition from θ′′ precipitates to θ′ precipitates, resulting in a slight reduction in strength. However, this homogenization step helps to avoid the aggregation of pores by promoting pores ripening and significantly alleviates the anisotropy of ductility. In addition, the better thermal stability of the HT6 heat treated alloy is due to more Al 3 X dispersoids and finer θ′ precipitates with high coarsening resistance caused by the segregation of Sc and Mn at the θ′/Al interface during thermal exposure. In general, the wire-arc DEDed micro-alloyed 2219 Al alloy exhibits a promising combination of strength and ductility after heat treatment and its mechanical properties are superior to those of the wrought micro-alloyed Al-Cu alloys.

Abstract:In this study, the as-cast microstructure and the evolution of the homogenized microstructure of large-scale industrialized Al-Cu-Mg-Ag heat-resistant aluminum alloy ingots were investigated by means of optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis (EDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicate that the dendritic segregation is evident in the ingot along the radial direction, and the grain boundaries are decorated with lots of net-shaped continuous eutectic structures. With the homogenization time extension and the homogenization temperature increase, the eutectic phases (i.e., the primary Al2Cu phase, the Al2CuMg phase, and the AlCuMgAg quaternary phase) at the grain boundaries gradually dissolve back into the matrix. Meanwhile, most of the dendritic grain boundaries gradually become sparse and thinner. Finally, it is found that the optimal homogenization regime of the Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy is 420 °C/5 h+480 °C/8 h+515 °C/24 h.

Abstract:The impact of homogenization time and temperature on microstructures and properties of the as-cast and homogenized Mg-9.0Y-3.0MM-0.6Zr alloy were investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and tensile test. The homogenization parameters were determined. The results indicated that the Mg-9.0Y-3.0MM-0.6Zr as-cast microstructures consisted of phases of α-Mg, Mg12(MM) and Mg24Y5 with an average grain size of 45 μm. 505 and 520°C were too low to make Mg-Y phase dissolve completely. After homogenizing at 535 °C for 18 h, there were only Mg12(MM) phases remained and the grains did not grow up as prolonging the homogenization time, indicating that Mg12(MM) phase could efficaciously restrain grain coarsening. The mechanical properties were not significantly changed after homogenization at 535°C for 18 h, compared with the as-cast alloy. The mechanical properties of the homogenization alloy after extrusion were improved obviously, with σ0.2, σb, δ being 245, 305 MPa and 12.5% respectively. The fracture morphology of the as-cast alloy was similar to the homogenized alloy at room temperature. There were a few dimples on local part of the fracture surface, indicating that brittle fracture was the main fracture mechanism. However, the fracture morphology of extruded alloy presented typical ductile fracture characteristics.

Abstract:A homogenization of billets from Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys should be accomplished at high annealing temperatures exceeding 500 °C. This type of aluminum alloy is susceptible to the depletion of surface layers from Li. Therefore, choosing a suitable homogenization temperature and duration is a crucial step in assuring a homogeneous distribution of alloying elements and optimal exploitation of the potential of the alloy. In situ heating in an electron microscope was performed on a twin-roll-cast Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Sc-Zr alloy to understand the peculiarities of the homogenization process. Four types of primary phase particles rich in Cu, Li, Mg, and Fe were identified in the as-cast material. They appear as coarse particles at the boundaries of eutectic cells. Their partial dissolution occurs at temperatures above 450 °C. They are almost fully dissolved at 550 °C, except for complex phases containing Fe and Cu. Small dimensions of eutectic cells in the range of 10 μm assure a homogeneous distribution of the main alloying elements within the matrix after 20 min of annealing at 530 °C. Direct comparison with the same material prepared by mold casting indicates that such short annealing times result in the dissolution of the main primary phase particles but do not assure a homogeneous distribution of the alloying elements in the whole volume of the specimen.

Abstract:To develop a new compound heat treatment process for improving the mechanical properties of die-cast Al alloys, this study investigated the effects of cryogenic, solution and aging compound treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of die-cast Al alloys. The characterization methods used were optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and tensile tests; and the Image Pro Plus software was used for statistical analysis. The results indicated that compared with T6 heat treatment, the compound heat treatment process consisting of cryogenic treatment (−196 °C for 12 h), solid solution treatment (476 °C for 22 min), and aging (159 °C for 403 min) significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the die-cast Al alloys. For instance, the tensile strength increased from 224.3 to 249.5 MPa; the hardness increased from HV 110.5 to HV 124.6, and the elongation increased from 6.28% to 7.72%, which in relative terms corresponds to 11.2%, 12.8% and 22.9%, respectively. The compound heat treatment process of the alloy led to significant refinement of its α-Al phases. In addition, Si phases tended to be more ellipsoidal or granular, while the tips of Fe-containing phases became rounded, which played a key role in enhancing the mechanical properties and microstructure stability of the alloys.

Abstract:Due to the prominent advantages of low density, high elastic modulus, high specific strength and specific stiffness, cast Al-Li alloys are suitable metallic materials for manufacturing complex large-sized components and are ideal structural materials for aerospace, defense and military industries. On the basis of the microstructural characteristics of cast Al-Li alloys, exploring the role of alloying and micro-alloying can stabilize their dominant position and further expand their application scope. In this review, the development progress of cast Al-Li alloys was summarized comprehensively. According to the latest research highlights, the influence of alloying and heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was systematically analyzed. The potential methods to improve the alloy performance were concluded. In response to the practical engineering requirements of cast Al-Li alloys, the scientific challenges and future research directions were discussed and prospected.

Abstract:The effect of Al contents on the properties and structures of AZ80, AZ91，AZ131 and AZ151 magnesium alloys has been studied. The experiments of homogenization treatment, hot extrusion, and annealing treatment are carried out in order to study the effects of these processes to the properties and structure of AZ80, AZ91, AZ131 and AZ151 magnesium alloys. The parameters of homogenization treatment (420°C×24h, 420°C×36h) determined by DSC and metallurgical photo are sufficient which ensure the eutectic phase melt into magnesium matrix greatly. The strength of extruded bars shortly after homogenization treatment increase (Rp0.2 from 232 to 310MPa), but elongation decrease (A from 12 to 2.5%) with Al contents. The differences and causes of structure and mechanical properties of extruded bar after the process of aging are analyzed in detail by tensile experiments, hardness measurement, and optical observation.
