Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) has been regarded as a promising hydrogen supply method for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), while the efficiency for hydrogen production and integration method of MSR with PEMFC are two major challenges for commercial applications. Here, we present a highly efficient MSR system for hydrogen production and supply for low temperature PEMFC (LT-PEMFC). The MSR system has a highly compact microreactor, wherein MSR, methanol combustion, and CO selective methanation reactions occur. The CO selective methanation is used to reduce the content of CO concentration to remit the CO poison, then the reformate of MSR system is mixed with air and supply for the LT-PEMFC. Then, experimental tests are conducted to investigate the effects of operating parameters on hydrogen production. A staged supply strategy is proposed, it enables to startup the system within 11.2 min and with methanol consumption of 34.72 g. Results show that the methanol conversion can reach up to 93.0% and system's energy efficiency of 76.2%. After integration with a LT-PEMFC, a maximum 160 W electricity can be generated. The results obtained in this study demonstrated that the developed MSR system can be used to supply hydrogen for LT-PEMFC and able to power mobile device requiring hundreds of watts power consumption. Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) has been used for in-situ hydrogen production, while hydrogen purification remains a technical challenge to limit the applications of using hydrogen for fuel cells. This study presents a pure hydrogen generation system (PHGS) by integrating MSR and hydrogen purification modules, this system enables low-temperature reforming and high-temperature purification to achieve high yield and recovery of hydrogen. To investigate the combined effects of feedstock flow rates and pressure on MSR and purification, the performance of each module and overall PHGS system were tested. The results showed that PHGS can stably produce high purity hydrogen (>99.99%) under different conditions, the synergistic effects of two modules lead to hydrogen yield exceeding the numerical sum of individual modules. At methanol feed rate of 1.00 g/min and system pressure of 5.0 bar, the pure hydrogen flow rate, CO content, pure hydrogen yield, hydrogen recovery and thermal power output were tested about 1.70 +/- 0.01 L/min, 2.4 +/- 0.1 ppm, 81.1 +/- 0.5%, 87.6 +/- 0.5% and 350 W. The PHGS can deliver up to 500 W of thermal power and is suitable for small range-extended electric vehicles. Our work on the developed PHGS can provide a significant reference for future practical applications of systems combining MSR and membrane purification.
An Innovative Micro-Channel Catalyst Support with a Micro-Porous Surface for Hydrogen Production Via Methanol Steam Reforming

Abstract:To improve the energy conversion of a micro-channel reactor, an innovative micro-channel catalyst support with a micro-porous surface is proposed and fabricated by a layered powder sintering and dissolution method (LPSDM). The catalyst adhesion strength is analyzed by an ultrasonic vibration test and results show the catalyst has a 7 wt. % loss on the catalyst support with micro-porous surface and a 16 wt. % loss on the non-porous surface. Subsequently, the coated catalyst support is applied to methanol steam reforming for hydrogen production. Results show that the micro-channel catalyst supports with micro-porous and non-porous surfaces respectively have a hydrogen production rate of 18.07 ml/min and 9.65 ml/min at 573 K under the inlet flow rate of 30 mu l/min. Compared with the catalyst support with a non-porous surface, the catalyst support with a micro-porous surface shows better catalyst adhesion and obvious advantages in hydrogen production rate and methanol conversion. Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is an attractive option for in-situ hydrogen production and to supply for transportation and industrial applications. This paper presents a novel thermally autonomous MSR microreactor that uses silicon carbide (SiC) honeycomb ceramic as a catalyst support to enhance energy conversion efficiency and hydrogen production. The structural design and working principle of the MSR microreactor are described along with the development of a 3D numerical model to study the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics. The simulation results indicate that the proposed micro reactor has a significantly low drop in pressure and more uniform temperature distribution in the SiC ceramic support. Further, the microreactor was developed and an experimental setup was conducted to test its hydrogen production performance. The experimental results show that the developed microreactor can be operated as thermally autonomous to reach its target working temperature within 9 min. The maximum energy efficiency of the microreactor is 67.85% and a hydrogen production of 316.37 ml/min can be achieved at an inlet methanol flow rate of 360 ml/min. The obtained results demonstrate that SiC honeycomb ceramic with high thermal conductivity can serve as an effective catalyst support for the development of MSR microreactors for high volume and efficient hydrogen production. Absorption-Enhanced Methanol Steam Reforming for Low-Temperature Hydrogen Production with Carbon Capture

Abstract:Methanol is a prospective hydrogen storage medium that holds the potential to address the challenges of hydrogen storage and transportation. However, hydrogen production via methanol steam reforming faces several key obstacles, including high reaction temperature (e.g., 250–300 °C) and low methanol conversion (at <200 °C), while the purification procedure of hydrogen is commonly required to obtain high-purity H2. A novel method of H2 absorption-enhanced steam reforming of methanol is proposed to overcome the challenges mentioned above. The method involves the absorption and separation of H2 using an absorbent to facilitate the forward shift of the reaction equilibrium and enhance reaction performance. A thermodynamic analysis using the equilibrium constant method presents that the separation of H2 can improve the methanol conversion rate and the total H2 yield. The feasibility of the method is validated through experiments in a fixed-bed reactor (4 mm diameter, 194 mm length) under the conditions of 200 °C and 1 bar. In the experiments, 1 g of bulk catalyst (CuO/ZnO/Al2O3) and 150 g of bulk hydrogen absorbent (Aluminum-doped lanthanum penta-nickel alloy, LaNi4.3Al0.7 alloy) are sequentially loaded into the reactor. As a proof of concept, a CO2 concentration of 84.10% is obtained in the reaction step of the first cycle, and a gas stream with an H2 concentration of 81.66% is obtained in the corresponding regeneration step. A plug flow reactor model considering the kinetics is developed to analyze the effects of the number of cycles and H2 separation ratio on the enhancement performance. The method indicates a high potential for commercialization given its low reaction temperature, high-purity H2, and membrane-free design.

Abstract:<p>Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is a promising process to produce hydrogen suitable for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, but the development of catalysts with high activity and selectivity at low temperature is highly needed. Here, a series of Zn-modified Pt/MoC catalysts with different Zn loadings were prepared and used to produce hydrogen by MSR at low temperature. The addition of small amounts of Zn to Pt/MoC not only favors the formation of α-MoC1-x phase, but also enhances the Pt dispersion and the interaction between α-MoC1-x and Pt active sites, leading to increased catalytic activity for MSR. The optimal 0.5Zn-Pt/MoC catalyst exhibits superior hydrogen production activity with exceptionally low CO selectivity at low temperatures (120 − 200 °C). Overall, this work offers insight into the structure-activity relationship and stability in Zn-modified Pt/MoC catalysts for MSR, which will be helpful to the design of MSR catalysts with high activity and stability at low temperature.</p>

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming coupled with an efficient hydrogen purification technology to produce high purity hydrogen that feeds for hydrogen fuel cells is an attractive approach to realizing distributed power generation. However, the harmony of catalytic reforming and hydrogen separation with respect to thermodynamics is still an issue. In this work, in order to construct an integrated methanol steam reforming (MSR) reactor for high purity hydrogen production, CuCe/Al2O3 was synthesized by a hydrothermal-impregnated method and a Pd membrane supported by a porous ceramic using the electroless plating method. The results revealed that the catalytic activity and high temperature stability for methanol steam reforming were evidently improved by tuning the copper dispersion, porous structure and the crystal phase. The coupling range with palladium membrane operating temperature was widened. CuCe/Al2O3 presented an excellent stability with a better carbon deposition resistance for the long-term tests than Cu/Al2O3, which exhibited 836.68 μmol/gcat. min of H2 production with low carbon deposition (3.38 wt%) and lower CO emission (0.48 vol%). A 10 μm thick Pd membrane that was deposited on the ceramic support displayed dense and even surface morphology. The effect of palladium membrane structure on hydrogen separation was analyzed. In addition, the influence of temperature on coupling was discussed. Ultimately, high purity of H2 (99.36 vol%) was achieved at 400 °C by integrating the Pd membrane reactor with methanol steam reforming. The internal temperature distribution of the reactor and the effects of feeding conditions were also investigated. This work might offer certain reference for the development of the future distributed integrated hydrogen power generation system, especially in the application of electric vehicles and on-site electricity.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming microreactors can be used for hydrogen production in industry applications. This paper presents a novel thermally autonomous methanol steam reforming microreactor that uses porous copper foam as catalyst support to enhance the performance of hydrogen production. The proposed microreactor mainly consists of a vaporizer, a catalytic combustor, and a methanol steam reformer. It uses a Pt/Al2O3 catalyst with 0.15% Pt for methanol combustion and a CuO/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst-coated copper foam for methanol steam reforming. A numerical model was developed to study the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in the porous copper foam and a thin-layer of coated catalyst. Simulation results revealed that the pressure drop and velocity gradient of the microreactor increased when the weight of the catalyst increased. Experimental tests were conducted to study the effects of catalyst loading on the methanol conversion, hydrogen production, and overall efficiency of the microreactor. The results indicate that the developed microreactor can be successfully startup within 13 min and its overall efficiency is approximately 35-45%. The results obtained in this research can be used to develop a highly efficient methanol steam reforming microreactor for hydrogen production. (C) 2020 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) running on hydrogen are attractive alternative power supplies for a range of applications, with in situ release of the required hydrogen from a stable liquid offering one way of ensuring its safe storage and transportation before use. The use of methanol is particularly interesting in this regard, because it is inexpensive and can reform itself with water to release hydrogen with a high gravimetric density of 18.8 per cent by weight. But traditional reforming of methanol steam operates at relatively high temperatures (200-350 degrees Celsius), so the focus for vehicle and portable PEMFC applications has been on aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM). This method requires less energy, and the simpler and more compact device design allows direct integration into PEMFC stacks. There remains, however, the need for an efficient APRM catalyst. Here we report that platinum (Pt) atomically dispersed on α-molybdenum carbide (α-MoC) enables low-temperature (150-190 degrees Celsius), base-free hydrogen production through APRM, with an average turnover frequency reaching 18,046 moles of hydrogen per mole of platinum per hour. We attribute this exceptional hydrogen production-which far exceeds that of previously reported low-temperature APRM catalysts-to the outstanding ability of α-MoC to induce water dissociation, and to the fact that platinum and α-MoC act in synergy to activate methanol and then to reform it.

Abstract:To enhance the compactness of the micro-reactors for hydrogen production via methanol steam reforming (SMR) for fuel cell, a novel micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays (MPFAR) is designed and fabricated based on the micro thixo-forming technology. A three-dimensional model is adopted in the numerical analysis to investigate the heat and mass transfer in the micro-reactor. The results show that the methanol conversion in the MPFAR is higher than that in a micro-channel reactor, the velocity and temperature distribution is uniform in the catalyst support. Higher reaction temperature and contact time result in higher methanol conversion and CO molar fraction at the outlet, while a higher steam to methanol (SC-1) molar ratio results in a lower CO molar fraction. Finally, experiments are conducted to test the performance of the MPFAR for hydrogen production. The experimental results agree well with the simulated ones, which validate the accuracy of the simulation model. When the SC-1 molar ratio and the contact time are 1.2 and 0.12 S. respectively, the methanol conversion of the MPFAR reaches to 87.5% with the hydrogen molar fraction of about 75% at the outlet, which is suitable for the application in the fuel cell system. Abstract:Methanol is a promising hydrogen carrier, where hydrogen-rich gas can be produced by methanol steam reforming (MSR). However, this method of releasing hydrogen is highly energy consuming. Herein, the Joule-heating catalyst support (JHCS) was fabricated by a FeCrAl metal to enhance the efficiency of electrification, replacing the conventional external heating method. The heat can be provided for the reforming reaction directly inside the microreactor by the Joule-heating method. The Joule-heating reactor showed a faster thermal response than the externally heated reactor; the start-up heating time and the time of a start-stop cycle are about 75 % and 50 % of those for external heating, respectively. The methanol conversion rate of the Joule-heating microreactor was 91.45 % at 280 °C, improved by nearly 30 % than the external heating counterpart. The consumed power density of the Joule-heating microreactor was 2 W/cm 3 , only 15.8 % of external heating (12.61 W/cm 3 ). The reforming efficiency reached 51.91 % without any waste heat recovery measures, about 4 times of the external heating method. Heat transfer simulation verified the minimal radial temperature gradient in the microreactor eliminated by JHCS. The proposed JHCS method demonstrates a uniform microreactor temperature distribution and superior hydrogen production performance with lower power consumption.

Abstract:A flow-through catalytic membrane micro-reactor (CMR) with Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles immobilized in porous membrane pores has been developed for hydrogen production by methanol steam reforming (MSR). The characteristics for CMR demonstrated Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles with almost 200 nm were successfully in situ immobilized in membrane pores. During MSR for hydrogen production in CMR by flow-through mode, hydrogen yield of 500 mmol h −1 g − 1 and selectivity of 100% can be achieved under the condition of temperature being 360°C, molar ratio of water to methanol of 8.8 and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 9.28 h −1 . Compared with the commercial fixed bed reactor, the hydrogen productivity in CMR is one order of magnitude higher, owing to MSR confined in the space of membrane pore with micro-scale. The methanol conversion rate of over 95% can be expected, if five sheets of CMR with thickness of 5 mm were assembled in series.

Abstract:With increasing global emphasis on environmental sustainability, the reliance on traditional energy sources such as coal, natural gas, and oil is encountering significant challenges. H2, known for its high energy content and pollution‐free usage, emerges as a promising alternative. However, despite the great potential of H2, approximately 95% of hydrogen production still depends on non‐renewable resources. Hence, the shift towards producing H2 from renewable sources, particularly through methods like steam reforming of methanol ‐ a renewable resource ‐ represents a beacon of hope for advancing sustainable energy practices. This review comprehensively examines recent advancements in efficient H2 production using Ni‐based catalysts in methanol steam reforming (MSR) and proposes the future prospects. Firstly, the fundamental principles of MSR technology and the significance in clean energy generation are elucidated. Subsequently, the design, synthesis techniques, and optimization strategies for enhancing the catalytic performance of Ni‐based catalysts are discussed. Through the analysis of various catalyst compositions, structural adjustments, surface active sites, and modification methods, the review uncovers effective approaches for boosting the activity and durability of MSR reactions. By offering a comprehensive critical analysis, this review serves as a valuable reference to enhance MSR hydrogen production efficiency and catalyst performance.

Abstract:This work compares the hydrogen purity and recovery produced by a methanol steam reforming (MSR) packed bed membrane reactor (PBMR) equipped with a membrane selective to hydrogen (Pd-Ag) and with a membrane selective to carbon dioxide (porous membrane filled with ionic liquids-ILs). A 3-dimensional non-isothermal PBMR model was developed in Fluent (Ansys™) for simulating a PBMR equipped with these two types of membranes and simulating a conventional packed bed reactor (PBR). For the development PBMR models a MSR mechanistic kinetic model was fitted to experimental reaction rates of a commercial catalyst (BASF RP60). The results indicated that selective hydrogen removal from the reaction medium originates a significant increase in the methanol conversion, while the carbon dioxide removal has a smaller effect. CO2-PBMR showed to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption than H2-PMBR. The simulation results showed also that ILs membranes must have a minimum permeance of ⩾1x10−6mols−1m−2Pa−1 and CO2/H2 selectivity of ⩾200 at 473K to be attractive for this type of applications. The advantages and limitations of each reactor configuration are discussed based on experimental and simulated data.

Abstract:Methanol, as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier, exhibits advantageous features such as easy storage, transportability, and low energy consumption at ambient conditions, making it a reliable on-site emergency hydrogen source. The adoption of steam reforming allows for the efficient release of hydrogen from liquid organic hydrogen carriers, thus offering a promising solution to hydrogen storage and transport challenges. Moreover, leveraging renewable energy sources (solar energy) to replace conventional fossil fuels for powering methanol steam reforming (MSR) reactions enables the utilization of high-quality on-demand hydrogen sources with reduced carbon emissions. However, several challenges in solar-driven MSR research persist, encompassing catalyst lifespan, reaction rate, reaction stability, and environmental impact. This review comprehensively summarizes and discusses recent advancements in solar-driven MSR, focusing on solar reactor design, development of control strategies for reaction systems, investigation of energy storage systems for reactors, as well as analysis of the photothermal coupling reaction mechanism. The primary aim is to share the latest progress in solar-driven MSR and identify common challenges and future research directions. Specifically, this paper focuses on the development of a joint active/passive control system, the establishment of a complementary energy supply system with multiple drive modes, the development of a low-temperature and high-efficiency conversion technology for the reactants, and the exploration of a synergistic gain mechanism for the coupling of photothermal energy in MSR reactions. Furthermore, it advocates for interdisciplinary design approaches to achieve seamless integration between solar energy supply systems and MSR reaction systems, thereby minimizing energy losses during the reaction process. The insights provided in this review offer novel perspectives and directions for the development of low-carbon hydrogen production processes.

Engineering the morphology of Pt/In2O3 heterogeneous catalyst is a feasible strategy for efficient MSR catalyst design, which can construct the Pt2+-In2O3 interfacial sites by utilizing the interaction between Pt and In2O3, thereby facilitating oxygen vacancy creation and activating methanol and water molecules. In this work, three kinds of In2O3 supports with different morphologies of nanorods, nanocubes and nanoplates were synthesized, and Pt/In2O3 catalysts were prepared by deposition–precipitation method. The performance of the catalysts for MSR hydrogen production was evaluated at 250 ∼ 375 ℃. The rod-shaped Pt/In2O3 catalyst with extremely low loading of Pt (0.21 wt%) exhibited the superior catalytic activity compared to the other two counterpart catalysts, achieving the complete CH3OH conversion and the CO selectivity as low as 3.8 % at 325 ℃. Moreover, the performance of Pt/r-In2O3 catalyst remained stable during the stability test for up to 40 h. Based on XRD, BET, HRTEM, XPS, Raman, UV–vis and H2-TPR characterization methods, the observed morphology-dependent reactivity of Pt/In2O3 catalysts can be correlated to the good low-temperature reducibility, abundant surface Pt2+ and adsorbed reactive oxygen species, which was originated from the exposed (211) crystal planes. The preferential exposed (211) crystal plane enables a stronger interaction of In2O3 support with Pt species resulting in the synergistic effect of high oxygen vacancy content, high proportion of Pt2+, and the formation of Pt2+-In2O3 interface active sites, which facilitates the activation and conversion of methanol and water molecules. The developed strategy may provide insight into the development of the design principles for high-performance methanol reforming catalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming has been used for in-situ hydrogen production and supply for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), while its power density and energy efficiency still needs to be improved. Herein, we present a novel methanol steam reforming microreactor based on the stacked wave sheets and copper foam for highly efficient hydrogen production. The structural of stacked wave sheets and copper foam, and their roles in the microreactor are described, methanol catalytic combustion is adopted to supply heat for methanol steam reforming reaction and enables the microreactor to work automatically. For catalyst carrier, a fractal body-centered cubic model is established to study the flow characteristics and chemical reaction performances of the copper foam with coated catalyst layer. Both simulation and experimental results showed that the reformate flowrate increases with the increasing of microreactor layers and methanol solution flowrate, the discrepancies of methanol conversion between simulation and experimental tests are less than 7%. Experimental results demonstrated that the reformate flowrate of 1.0 SLM can be achieved with methanol conversion rate of 65%, the output power of the microreactor is 159 W and power density is 395 W/L. The results obtained in this study indicates that stacked wave sheets and copper foam can uniform the reactant flow and improve the hydrogen production performances. Theoretical insight into hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming on Pt(111)

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are widely used for hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming (MSR), but they show high CO selectivity. The reaction pathways of MSR on Pt(111) surface are systemically studied using density functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo to reduce the selectivity of CO. The results show that CH3OH (g) → CH3OH* → CH2OH *→ CHOH * → CHO * → CO * → CO (g) is the main reaction pathway at 423–623 K and 0.1–10 atm with CH3OH: H2O of 3:1–1:1, and water is very difficult to dissociate. The difference between H2O* + * → OH* + H* and CH3OH* +*→ CH2OH * + H* is the key factor for MSR reaction on Pt(111) surface. The actual ratio of H2/(CO+CO2) is close to the theoretical ratio for MSR (2.91 vs. 3.00) when the energy barrier of H2O* + * → OH* + H* is smaller than that of CH3OH* +*→ CH2OH * + H* by 0.30 eV. The elimination of CO* is mainly from CO * + OH * → COOH*, and the ratio of CO/(CO+CO2) is 6.71%. These results may be useful for the design and optimization of Pt-based catalysts at low temperature for MSR reaction.
