Abstract:The diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were coated by RF/DC plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (DC-RF-PECVD) on the inner walls of a polythylene terephthalate (PET) tube. The impacts of the RF power on properties, including surface morphologies, microstructures, optical transmittance, gas permeability as well as the deposition rate of the film were studied. The DLC films were characterized with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet infrared spectroscopy and the conventional probes. The results show that the fairly compact DLC films, grown at 150W on PET substrate, considerably block near UV light and improve the gas barrier property for O2 and CO2. For example, after DLC coating, the permeability of O2 and CO2 drops from 58. 5cm3m-2atm-1d-1 and 61.7cm3 m-2 atm-1· d-1 to 0.7cm3m-2 atm-1 d-1 and 15.7cm3m-2 atm-1 d-1, respectively. Moreover, the corresponding O2 and CO2 transmission rates decrease by 80 and 40 times, respectively.
