Abstract:Dr. Martha Jane Powell () was born to John James Powell and Martha Lee Powell in North Carolina and spent most of her life studying chytrid fungi and mentoring students to do the same. She was kind, generous, and funny. Martha impacted the lives of many people inside and outside of the classroom with her infectious joy and curiosity about the world. She clearly saw the good in those around her and worked to nurture it. Here, we remember her and her contributions to mycology and society.

Abstract:James E. Nickum, Editor-in-Chief, 2007–present The field of water has lost a giant. Malin Falkenmark, who passed away last December, was with IWRA from its infancy, as a director on the first and third Executive Boards in 1972–74 and 1980–82, Chair of the Membership Committee in 1982–85, and Vice-President in 1986–88. More recently, she served as a long-time member of the Editorial Board, and always had good things to say about the Best Paper candidates she reviewed. During that half century, she left the world, among others, the Falkenmark water stress index (with Jan Lundqvist and Carl Widstrand, 1989), hydrosolidarity (1998), and the distinction between green and blue water (with Johan Rockström, 2006), as well as numerous contributions to Water International , listed at the end of this memorial. Those items from this journal will be available for free access until the end of 2024.

Abstract:In 1943, Australian scientist Miss Dora Lush's life was tragically cut short in her relentless pursuit of scientific knowledge. This article commemorates the 100-year anniversary of the journal, ICB, by celebrating the remarkable career of Lush, a renowned bacteriologist who achieved unparalleled success in an era when women faced formidable barriers to tertiary education and scientific recognition. Graduating with a Master of Science from the University of Melbourne in 1934, Lush's ground-breaking research in infectious diseases, conducted in collaboration with Frank Macfarlane Burnet AO at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI), played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of viruses, including influenza, herpes and myxomatosis. Lush's pivotal work on influenza provided the foundational evidence to develop the influenza vaccine, a cornerstone of global public health today. Similarly, her investigation of myxoma virus in rabbits, with its potential for pest control and ecological impact, was used to instruct creation of the world's first biological control program against a mammalian pest. Tragically, Dora Lush succumbed to scrub fever in 1943, a disease she contracted during a laboratory accident. Her unwavering commitment to science led her to offer her own blood for research as she battled the infection, exemplifying her dedication to advancing knowledge even in the face of personal adversity. Lush's legacy endures through scholarships and fellowships that bear her name in Australia, fostering the careers of aspiring scientists. Her ground-breaking research and unwavering determination continue to inspire generations, reminding us of the importance of diversity in science and the enduring impact of pioneering women like Lush.

This was my friend Charlotte Williamson. Charlotte worked much with doctors. From 1978–1982 she was a member of North Yorkshire Area Health Authority, a post that she did not apply for, a member of York District Health Authority from 1982–1992 and a member of York Health Services Trust(Board) from 1992–1997, a post that she resigned from to concentrate on national work, and vice-chairman of all of the above for 20 years. Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society

Abstract:Salome Gluecksohn-Waelsch was a pioneer in establishing the field of mammalian developmental genetics, bringing together experimental embryology and genetics at a time when the role of genes in development was far from accepted. She studied in Germany in the 1930s with the renowned experimental embryologist Hans Spemann and then moved to New York City where she spent her entire professional career at Columbia University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Her career was remarkable not only for its longevity—she continued experiments well into her 90s—but also for ushering in new ways of approaching developmental biology in mammals. In her studies of the T -complex in mice, she made use of naturally occurring mutations as nature's own experiments that allowed the investigation of the normal role of the genes in the events of morphogenesis. In her later work with the albino chromosomal deletions, she extended her studies to the genetics of physiological traits. Throughout the decades that saw a blossoming of the entire field of genetics, Salome Gluecksohn-Waelsch's work tackling some of the most perplexing problems in mammalian genetics firmly established the mouse as model organism, not only for studying development, but also for the eventual application of molecular biology techniques to development. Her published work is a beautifully coherent and rigorous opus, for which she received many honours. Her influence on a generation of geneticists, developmental biologists and the field of developmental genetics was profound. The life of Salome Gluecksohn–Waelsch spanned a century that suffered the destructive upheaval of two world wars but also saw phenomenal progress in the sciences, including embryology and genetics. At the start of Salome's career, these two fields were far apart and developmental genetics was barely a concept. Along with a few other pioneers, Salome was instrumental in establishing that genes actually had roles in development and in founding the field of mammalian developmental genetics. Her career laid the ground work for the eventual integration of genetic and developmental studies through molecular biology. Salome Gluecksohn–Waelsch published under four different names at different stages of her life and career: Salome Glücksohn, Salome Gluecksohn–Schoenheimer, Salome Gluecksohn–Waelsch, and Salome G. Waelsch. Among her colleagues and friends, she was almost universally known as Salome and so for the purpose of this biographical memoir, I have chosen to refer to her by her first name, out of friendship and respect.

Abstract:Karen Andrea Steidinger passed away on June the 11th 2023, aged 84 years. She was a highly eminent marine biologist whose almost six decades of research with State Institutions in Florida, USA made important contributions to phycology and oceanography. Karen is most notably remembered as a pioneer in research on 'red tides', now usually referred to as studies on harmful algal blooms (HABs), since they are seldom red or anything to do with tides. HABs are now recognised as a serious threat to human health and welfare worldwide, and a large research field has developed to investigate HABs, starting with the now famous 1972 'red tide' along the east coast of the USA. Karen was one of very few HAB researchers before 1972, and she presented a trail-blazing paper entitled Basic factors influencing red tides at the First International Conference on Toxic Dinoflagellate Blooms in Boston, Massachusetts in 1975 (Steidinger Citation 1975 ). Following her passing, Karen's closest colleagues held a moving tribute to her in Florida on September the 9th 2023 (see Harmful Algal News 74, December 2023; https://hab.ioc-unesco.org/).

Abstract:Grete Kellenberger-Gujer was a Swiss molecular biologist who pioneered fundamental studies of bacteriophage in the mid-20(th) century at the University of Geneva. Her life and career stories are reviewed here, focusing on her fundamental contributions to our early understanding of phage biology via her insightful analyses of phenomena such as the lysogenic state of a temperate phage (λ), genetic recombination, radiation's in vivo consequences, and DNA restriction-modification; on her creative personality and interactions with peers; and how her academic advancement was affected by gender, societal conditions and cultural attitudes of the time. Her story is important scientifically, putting into perspective features of the scientific community from just before the molecular biology era started through its early years, and also sociologically, in illustrating the numerous "glass ceilings" that, especially then, often hampered the advancement of creative women.

Abstract:In March 2015, the journal Environmental Earth Sciences published a special issue (volume 73, issue 6; currently, with over 17,860 online accesses and 515 citations) on the topic ''sustainability and water resources'' honouring EurGeol José Martins Carvalho's long career over five decades. He recently left us after a severe healthiness battle, fighting like a knight from 2022 to January 31, 2023. Based on sensitive memories, this essay aims to outline the foremost professionals' roots and milestones, focusing on the legacy of the extraordinary career of José Martins Carvalho (1943–2023) as a professional hydrogeologist, emeritus professor and groundwater researcher. He had an exceptional career spanning over 57 years in multidisciplinary environmental hydrogeology practice in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America. The core of his vivid and long professional journey was to support hydrogeology's training, teaching, and research to solve societal issues and challenges through an environmental, sustainable and geoethical approach. José Martins Carvalho is an example and inspiration for future generations of geologists, engineers, environmental scientists, and groundwater-related practitioners, including natural hazards researchers and social geoscientists.
