Abstract:On February 2 2023, one of the guiding lights in the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for more than four decades, David E. Yoder, passed away at the age of 90. A voracious reader and gifted storyteller, David was particularly fond of a quote from George Bernard Shaw's Back to Methuselah, "You see things; and you say 'Why?' but I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'" That vision led him to take on multiple leadership roles and influence the field of AAC in multiple ways. He played a pivotal role in establishing both the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC) and the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (USSAAC). Additionally, he chaired the panel for the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR)'s inaugural Consensus Validation Conference on AAC, advocated for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association to recognize AAC within the profession's scope of practice, and served as the first editor for the Augmentative and Alternative Communication journal. In this tribute, we describe David's diverse and unique contributions to improving the lives of people with communication challenges with a focus on some of his central insights and actions.

Abstract:Our hearts had another huge hole blown right through them. It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to another pillar of our Physical Activity in Public Health (PAPH) community, Harold W. (Bill) Kohl III. I first met Bill Kohl in 1986 at the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. The two of us, along with Andrea Kriska and I-Min Lee, were the original four graduate students being trained as epidemiologists (not exercise physiologists) in order to study the benefits of exercise to population health. Over the next 38 years, our careers tracked very closely and we developed a strong professional and personal bond. In fact, we were the academic equivalent of an "old married couple" who knew exactly what the other was thinking before they spoke. Now I have to speak of him in the past tense.

Abstract:Objective: To provide an overview of Joe Biederman’s contributions to child and adolescent psychiatry. Method: Nine colleagues described his contributions to: psychopharmacology, comorbidity and genetics, pediatric bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorders, Tourette’s and tic disorders, clinical and neuro biomarkers for pediatric mood disorders, executive functioning, and adult ADHD. Results: Joe Biederman left us with many concrete indicators of his contributions to child and adolescent psychiatry. He set up the world’s first pediatric psychopharmacology clinic and clinical research program in child adolescent psychiatry. As a young faculty member he began a research program that led to many awards and eventual promotion to full professor at Harvard Medical School. He was for many years the most highly cited researcher in ADHD. He achieved this while maintaining a full clinical load and was widely respected for his clinical acumen. Conclusion: The world is a better place because Joe Biederman was here.

Abstract:Dear colleagues and friends of the Latin American Foot and Ankle world, it is for me an honor and at the same time a great sadness to pass along the sad news that January brought to all of us. Ramón Viladot-Pericé, world reference in Foot and Ankle and professor of generations of specialists in Spain and Latin America, passed away in Barcelona. Providence wanted that, in the last months and even years, we had been united by an intense research activity, and I have the honor of having published with him his last scientific article, published last year in this scientific journal.What can we say... we have plenty of reasons to highlight his impressive scientific legacy and even more reasons to stress his unmeasurable human qualities. His absence leaves an enormous void impossible to fill. From the scientific point of view, his last moments were filled with an unprecedented resurgence of science in all senses: it was not time to end a project to start another, and the hours and days were not enough to meet his goals. Perhaps he never thought of such a hastyend, but even so, destiny prepared him to say goodbye in the best way: communicating how much he knew about Foot and Ankle. Among many other things, I am left with the calls of the last months, full of affection and cognizance of the perfection of his work, but also with his inexhaustible eagerness for rigorous scientific production. With Ramón Viladot part of the History of Foot and Ankle is gone. Probably nothing will be the same from now on, but we are left withhis unequaled personal and scientific legacy, his disposition, his human qualities. Surely many of the readers of this Editorial can identify with these words, as there are many of us who have shared operations and consultations with him both at the Hospital San Rafael and at the Clínica Tres Torres in Barcelona.The person died, but the memory lives on. Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. Harold (Hal) C. Slavkin, DDS, the 22nd president of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (1993 to 1994), died on December 22, 2023. During a career that spanned almost 6 decades, Hal distinguished himself as an international authority on craniofacial biology and an advocate for oral health equity. He served as dean of the University of Southern California's dental school, founded the school's Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology, created the nation's first PhD program in craniofacial biology, and served as the sixth director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Hal's studies of the molecular and cellular underpinnings of craniofacial malformations prepared him to champion translational research later in his career, when his work with patient advocates revealed the importance of applying new discoveries to clinical practice. A visionary thinker, skilled administrator, progressive educator, compelling communicator, researcher, scholar, and mentor, Hal was known as a Renaissance leader. He rejoiced in fostering collaborative synergies among people and organizations. Throughout his life, family was his central grounding force. He and his wife, Lois, advanced a wide range of social and community initiatives and took great pride in their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We remember Hal for his indelible spirit, unflappable enthusiasm for science, fierce advocacy for social justice, and infectious zest for life. Here, we outline his multidimensional accomplishments through the lenses of academia, government, and nonprofit organizations. Although it is with heavy hearts that we bid goodbye to this remarkable man, our spirits are lightened by the many gifts he left behind.

Abstract:On the occasion of Dr. Michael Waterman's 80th birthday, we review his major contributions to the field of computational biology and bioinformatics including the famous Smith-Waterman algorithm for sequence alignment, the probability and statistics theory related to sequence alignment, algorithms for sequence assembly, the Lander-Waterman model for genome physical mapping, combinatorics and predictions of ribonucleic acid structures, word counting statistics in molecular sequences, alignment-free sequence comparison, and algorithms for haplotype block partition and tagSNP selection related to the International HapMap Project. His books Introduction to Computational Biology: Maps, Sequences and Genomes for graduate students and Computational Genome Analysis: An Introduction geared toward undergraduate students played key roles in computational biology and bioinformatics education. We also highlight his efforts of building the computational biology and bioinformatics community as the founding editor of the Journal of Computational Biology and a founding member of the International Conference on Research in Computational Molecular Biology (RECOMB).

SBP’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Robert A. C. Stewart was privileged to have Dr. Rosenthal as one of his professors while a graduate student at Harvard University in 1964–1965. He well remembers Dr. Rosenthal’s easy, inviting manner as a person. Having chosen to join our Board in the early years of the journal, Dr. Rosenthal was to remain, over the decades, a valued member of our advisory team until his death early this year.

Abstract:This invited editorial celebrates the distinguished professional life of Professor Kevin D. Tipton, who sadly passed away on January 9, 2022. Professor Tipton made an outstanding contribution to the scientific field of sport nutrition and exercise metabolism over an exceptional 30-year career. He dedicated his academic career to understanding the response of muscle protein metabolism to exercise and nutrition. The impact of his work is far-reaching with application to athletes in terms of promoting training adaptation, recovery, and performance, alongside clinical implications for injury management and healthy aging. Notable scientific contributions included the first in vivo human study to demonstrate the role of orally ingested essential amino acids in stimulating muscle protein synthesis during acute post-exercise recovery. This finding laid the foundation for future studies to interrogate the response of muscle protein synthesis to the ingestion of different protein types. Professor Tipton's work also included investigating the maximally effective dose and timing (regarding exercise) of ingested protein for the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis. Kevin will be remembered fondly by academics, applied scientists, and students across the sport nutrition and exercise metabolism community as a leading researcher in the field, a critical thinker, and an inspirational teacher. His mission was to educate the next generation of exercise scientists by sharing his distinct wealth of knowledge accrued over three decades. Above all else, Kevin was kind, generous (with his time and knowledge), honest, and incredibly social. He was a unique character and will be greatly missed among our community but certainly never forgotten.

Abstract:Prof. Wang Weiqi passed away on 26 August 2022, in Shanghai, China, at the age of 83 due to a heart attack. He will be remembered as a pioneer of biomedical ultrasonics in China, a highly respected colleague in the ultrasound research community, and an influential role model of perseverance, dedication, and excellence for students and academic peers at Fudan University, Shanghai, his alma mater and academic home since 1956.

Abstract:Since the unexpected and premature passing of Professor Harold W. (Bill) Kohl III on January 7, 2024, the field of physical activity and health has been mourning. Many colleagues, students, and friends paid their tribute to Bill through wholehearted texts, several of which have been published by the Journal of Physical Activity and Health . 1–4 Our field is based on the notion of movement and activity, and therefore, it would not be expected for us to be quiet and passive in processing the tragic loss of Bill. I (Hallal) was an exception—simply frozen and unable to translate my feelings into words for more than a month. But then, I (Hallal) visited Austin for a last beer in Bill's favorite pub and after that, I was finally ready to honor his legacy and translate some of my feelings into words.

Abstract:This article memorializes Peter M. Lewinsohn (1930-2022). Pete pioneered the development of a cognitive behavioral treatment of depressed individuals and research on its efficacy. With his graduate students, he created the Coping With Depression Course, which has been translated into many languages, adapted for older adults and adolescents, and used around the world. This approach is embodied in behavioral activation, a widely used, highly effective treatment of depression. He was a pioneer in translating cognitive behavioral mechanisms into bibliotherapy, including Control Your Depression, a self-help book still in print and used to guide treatment. Abstract:Dr. Jingzhu Zhao served as the Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal of Sustainable Development and World Ecology from 2010 to 2021. He was faithful to this journal and focused on editorial work during his tenure. His broad vision of sustainable development, sweeping views on ecological research, and strenuous efforts ensured the journal's success. Prof. Zhao suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis for 15 years, but the constant pain did not prevent him from working hard. Even when diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of June 2021, he kept up with his editorial duties for three more weeks. On 4 August 2021, Dr. Zhao passed away in Beijing, leaving all who knew him greatly saddened.
