Abstract:James E. Nickum, Editor-in-Chief, 2007–present The field of water has lost a giant. Malin Falkenmark, who passed away last December, was with IWRA from its infancy, as a director on the first and third Executive Boards in 1972–74 and 1980–82, Chair of the Membership Committee in 1982–85, and Vice-President in 1986–88. More recently, she served as a long-time member of the Editorial Board, and always had good things to say about the Best Paper candidates she reviewed. During that half century, she left the world, among others, the Falkenmark water stress index (with Jan Lundqvist and Carl Widstrand, 1989), hydrosolidarity (1998), and the distinction between green and blue water (with Johan Rockström, 2006), as well as numerous contributions to Water International , listed at the end of this memorial. Those items from this journal will be available for free access until the end of 2024.

Abstract:In March 2015, the journal Environmental Earth Sciences published a special issue (volume 73, issue 6; currently, with over 17,860 online accesses and 515 citations) on the topic ''sustainability and water resources'' honouring EurGeol José Martins Carvalho's long career over five decades. He recently left us after a severe healthiness battle, fighting like a knight from 2022 to January 31, 2023. Based on sensitive memories, this essay aims to outline the foremost professionals' roots and milestones, focusing on the legacy of the extraordinary career of José Martins Carvalho (1943–2023) as a professional hydrogeologist, emeritus professor and groundwater researcher. He had an exceptional career spanning over 57 years in multidisciplinary environmental hydrogeology practice in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America. The core of his vivid and long professional journey was to support hydrogeology's training, teaching, and research to solve societal issues and challenges through an environmental, sustainable and geoethical approach. José Martins Carvalho is an example and inspiration for future generations of geologists, engineers, environmental scientists, and groundwater-related practitioners, including natural hazards researchers and social geoscientists.

Sa disparition le 20 février 2017 à l’âge de 86 ans, en pleine activité scientifique, a très profondément marqué les communautés de chercheurs engagés dans les nanosciences. Ses contributions à la compréhension du couplage entre propriétés électroniques, vibrationnelles et structurales, dans les différentes formes de carbone sont au centre du développement des nanomatériaux carbonés et de leurs applications.

Abstract:In early 1978, the American Museum of Natural History appointed Dr. John Van Couvering as Editor-in-Chief of Micropaleontology Press, a program that began as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in 1935 and had been housed at the Museum since 1942. For John, this was the beginning of a 38 year-commitment to the dissemination of knowledge on the microscopic shells of protists, through cataloguing and editing scientific journals. While John officially retired in 2016, he continued to volunteer his time and expertise until shortly before his passing on May 22, 2023.

Abstract:Ken Walters was one of the most prominent rheologists of recent times. He brought his mathematical training to rheology and pioneered analysis of many common test procedures. In order to do this he contributed to the formation of nonlinear constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids and he was an early exponent of computational studies in rheology. He also applied his skills in fruitful collaborations with industry - notably the oil and china clay industries. He was born in Swansea, South Wales, in 1934 and he remained a devoted Welshman despite travelling widely. His academic studies in Swansea with James Oldroyd led to the PhD degree in 1959. In 1960, after a stint in the U.S.A., he was appointed as a Lecturer at Aberystwyth, and he remained there until his death in 2022. He built a very strong research team at Aberystwyth which became a dominant factor in the rheological scene in the United Kingdom. He was a keen promoter of rheology and he assisted in the organisation of many conferences and meetings. He was the founding Editor of the Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics (JNNFM). He authored or co-authored four well-known books on rheology plus several tracts of a religious nature - Ken was always a devoted Christian. He was also a very able sportsman especially at cricket and golf. He is survived by his wife Mary, three children and seven grandchildren.

The conclusion is that the present fresh water supply crisis exceeds even climate change as a threat to the continuation of human civilization, and that our denial of it is only contributing to the “extinction anxiety” that is welling up from the unconscious, even as the availability of the fresh water that is essential for the support of life ominously dwindles.

Abstract:Noel Frederick Smyth (NFS), a Fellow of the Australian Mathematical Society and a Professor of Nonlinear Waves in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, passed away on February 5, 2023. NFS was a prominent figure among applied mathematicians who worked on nonlinear wave theory in a broad range of areas. Throughout his academic career, which spanned nearly forty years, NFS developed mathematical models, ideas, and techniques that have had a large impact on the understanding of wave motion in diverse media. His major research emphasis primarily involved the propagation of solitary waves, or solitons, and dispersive shock waves, or undular bores, in various media, including optical fibers, liquid crystals, shallow waters and atmosphere. Several approaches he developed have proven effective in analyzing the dynamics and modulations of related wave phenomena. This tribute in the journal of Wave Motion aims to provide a brief biographical sketch of NFS, discuss his major research achievements, showcase his scientific competence, untiring mentorship and unwavering dedication, as well as share final thoughts from his former students, colleagues, friends, and family. The authors had a special connection with NFS on both on personal and professional levels and hold deep gratitude for him and his invaluable work. In recognition of his achievements in applied mathematics, Wave Motion hosts a Special Issue entitled "Modelling Nonlinear Wave Phenomena: From Theory to Applications," which presents the recent advancements in this field.

Abstract:David Blockley was born in Derbyshire, England, in 1941. He graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1964 and gained his PhD there in 1967. For two years, David worked as a Development Engineer with the British Constructional Steelwork Association in London. In 1969, he began a career at the University of Bristol. He was promoted to a readership in 1982 and a personal Chair in 1989. In the same year he was appointed as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, a position he held until 1994, when he was elected Dean of Engineering, a position he held until 1998. He was again Head of Civil Engineering from 2002 until his retirement in 2006. By his retirement, David had supervised roughly 30 PhD students. He was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Royal Society of Arts, and received a DSc in honour of his achievements. He was the President of the Institution of Structural Engineers during 2001–2002. He was a Non-Executive Director of Bristol Water plc from 1998 to 2007. David authored over 180 papers and ten books, and won several technical awards for his work, including The Telford Gold Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Karen, and their two children, Andrew and Alison.

Abstract:One of the leading figures of post-war palynology, Basil Eric Balme, passed away on 10 July 2023 in his 100 th year. He was born on 13 June 1923 in Perth, Western Australia. His grandfather hailed from Yorkshire and his father had been involved in the Battle of Passchendaele in WWI as a member of the Australian forces. After the war, his father worked in Collie and farmed at Meckering before becoming a shopkeeper in Victoria Park and then South Perth. Consequently, Basil attended a variety of primary schools before gaining entry to Scotch College as a Coombe Scholar with a Council Scholarship. There he made his mark playing Australian Rules football and cricket, and was Head Boy in his final year. Basil commenced studies at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1941, initially in engineering before switching to science, majoring in geology, where the lecturer in palaeontology was the internationally renowned Curt Teichert (1905–1996). However, in 1942 he suspended his studies to enlist in the Royal Australian Navy. Initially, he received intensive training in the then-new radar technology and went on to serve as a radar operator and eventually Petty Officer on ships in the Mediterranean and Pacific. He recalled serving for several months on a ship and had several discussions with Philip Mountbatten (subsequently Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh).

Abstract:Karen Andrea Steidinger passed away on June the 11th 2023, aged 84 years. She was a highly eminent marine biologist whose almost six decades of research with State Institutions in Florida, USA made important contributions to phycology and oceanography. Karen is most notably remembered as a pioneer in research on 'red tides', now usually referred to as studies on harmful algal blooms (HABs), since they are seldom red or anything to do with tides. HABs are now recognised as a serious threat to human health and welfare worldwide, and a large research field has developed to investigate HABs, starting with the now famous 1972 'red tide' along the east coast of the USA. Karen was one of very few HAB researchers before 1972, and she presented a trail-blazing paper entitled Basic factors influencing red tides at the First International Conference on Toxic Dinoflagellate Blooms in Boston, Massachusetts in 1975 (Steidinger Citation 1975 ). Following her passing, Karen's closest colleagues held a moving tribute to her in Florida on September the 9th 2023 (see Harmful Algal News 74, December 2023; https://hab.ioc-unesco.org/).
