Abstract:As young technologists, we often start our careers searching for mentors or role models who can guide us as we navigate our career choices. As mentees, we often do not have insights into our mentors' background and history—and thus may not appreciate the source of the wisdom they impart. The importance of mentorship is just one of many lessons learned from the life and career of Mildred "Millie" Dresselhaus described in Carbon Queen by Mia Weinstock. The book is a very readable account of an amazing individual whose life and career can be an inspiration to many aspiring scientists and engineers—particularly women. The book mixes the human side of Millie's story and manages to weave in a few understandable technical principles that help the reader understand her contributions to the scientific community.

Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. Harold (Hal) C. Slavkin, DDS, the 22nd president of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (1993 to 1994), died on December 22, 2023. During a career that spanned almost 6 decades, Hal distinguished himself as an international authority on craniofacial biology and an advocate for oral health equity. He served as dean of the University of Southern California's dental school, founded the school's Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology, created the nation's first PhD program in craniofacial biology, and served as the sixth director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Hal's studies of the molecular and cellular underpinnings of craniofacial malformations prepared him to champion translational research later in his career, when his work with patient advocates revealed the importance of applying new discoveries to clinical practice. A visionary thinker, skilled administrator, progressive educator, compelling communicator, researcher, scholar, and mentor, Hal was known as a Renaissance leader. He rejoiced in fostering collaborative synergies among people and organizations. Throughout his life, family was his central grounding force. He and his wife, Lois, advanced a wide range of social and community initiatives and took great pride in their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We remember Hal for his indelible spirit, unflappable enthusiasm for science, fierce advocacy for social justice, and infectious zest for life. Here, we outline his multidimensional accomplishments through the lenses of academia, government, and nonprofit organizations. Although it is with heavy hearts that we bid goodbye to this remarkable man, our spirits are lightened by the many gifts he left behind.

Abstract:Grete Kellenberger-Gujer was a Swiss molecular biologist who pioneered fundamental studies of bacteriophage in the mid-20(th) century at the University of Geneva. Her life and career stories are reviewed here, focusing on her fundamental contributions to our early understanding of phage biology via her insightful analyses of phenomena such as the lysogenic state of a temperate phage (λ), genetic recombination, radiation's in vivo consequences, and DNA restriction-modification; on her creative personality and interactions with peers; and how her academic advancement was affected by gender, societal conditions and cultural attitudes of the time. Her story is important scientifically, putting into perspective features of the scientific community from just before the molecular biology era started through its early years, and also sociologically, in illustrating the numerous "glass ceilings" that, especially then, often hampered the advancement of creative women.

Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society

Abstract:Salome Gluecksohn-Waelsch was a pioneer in establishing the field of mammalian developmental genetics, bringing together experimental embryology and genetics at a time when the role of genes in development was far from accepted. She studied in Germany in the 1930s with the renowned experimental embryologist Hans Spemann and then moved to New York City where she spent her entire professional career at Columbia University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Her career was remarkable not only for its longevity—she continued experiments well into her 90s—but also for ushering in new ways of approaching developmental biology in mammals. In her studies of the T -complex in mice, she made use of naturally occurring mutations as nature's own experiments that allowed the investigation of the normal role of the genes in the events of morphogenesis. In her later work with the albino chromosomal deletions, she extended her studies to the genetics of physiological traits. Throughout the decades that saw a blossoming of the entire field of genetics, Salome Gluecksohn-Waelsch's work tackling some of the most perplexing problems in mammalian genetics firmly established the mouse as model organism, not only for studying development, but also for the eventual application of molecular biology techniques to development. Her published work is a beautifully coherent and rigorous opus, for which she received many honours. Her influence on a generation of geneticists, developmental biologists and the field of developmental genetics was profound. The life of Salome Gluecksohn–Waelsch spanned a century that suffered the destructive upheaval of two world wars but also saw phenomenal progress in the sciences, including embryology and genetics. At the start of Salome's career, these two fields were far apart and developmental genetics was barely a concept. Along with a few other pioneers, Salome was instrumental in establishing that genes actually had roles in development and in founding the field of mammalian developmental genetics. Her career laid the ground work for the eventual integration of genetic and developmental studies through molecular biology. Salome Gluecksohn–Waelsch published under four different names at different stages of her life and career: Salome Glücksohn, Salome Gluecksohn–Schoenheimer, Salome Gluecksohn–Waelsch, and Salome G. Waelsch. Among her colleagues and friends, she was almost universally known as Salome and so for the purpose of this biographical memoir, I have chosen to refer to her by her first name, out of friendship and respect.

Abstract:Monique Boulet, who died in March 2024 aged 85, was a legendary figure of the IMS. Monique was born in the Belgian Congo and returned to Belgium as an adult. In the early 1970's Monique joined Pieter van Keep at the International Health Foundation which was directed by Pieter. Monique continued working with him as, together with Robert Greenblatt and Wulf Utian, she organised the first International Congress on the Menopause in France in 1976. Out of this, in 1978 the IMS was founded with Pieter becoming the first Secretary General and Monique the first Executive Director. Monique subsequently became a fulltime employee and worked on the administrative details and running of the fledgling IMS Secretariat which she operated out of her small flat in Brussels. She was quite a remarkable woman and completely dedicated to her role supporting the IMS project. The Society became her life, she was constantly answering members' queries, chatting to everyone, organising the early congresses and workshops, and corresponding daily with successive Presidents and Officers, Boards, national societies, individual members, and, of course, the Editors of the Society's journal, first Maturitas (which was the original IMS journal) and then Climacteric. She travelled to all four corners of the globe and knew almost every important public health individual around the World and their phone numbers. All of this of course long before the advent of email.

Abstract:Dr. Maud Leanora Menten, an esteemed Canadian physician, biochemist, and organic chemist, conducted a wide range of valuable biochemistry research for over 40 years, making groundbreaking discoveries about cancer treatments, enzyme kinematics, anesthesia medicine, bacterial toxins, vitamin deficiencies, hematology, and histochemistry. Menten demonstrated intense perseverance and tenacity in her education, defying societal norms to not only become one of the first Canadian women to earn a research-intensive Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, but to also be one of the first to earn a PhD. Although she was restricted in her work in Canada, she moved to the U.S. and published an estimated 100 research studies over her career. She is most well known for her work with Dr. Leonor Michaelis, with whom she created the Michaelis-Menten equation for the relationship between reaction rate and enzyme-substrate concentration. However, she conducted many other noteworthy research projects, such as using radium bromide for cancer treatment in rats and using electrophoretic mobility to study human hemoglobin, which allowed for a more advanced protein analysis. Her research in hemoglobin preceded the findings of Linus Pauling by several years, however, he is often the only one credited for this work. After her death, the extent and depth of her work was better understood and appreciated by many, and she was recognized by her alma mater, the University of Toronto, and her former workplace, the University of Pittsburgh. She was also posthumously inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

Abstract:Dr. Carolyn Meltzer is an extraordinary radiologist, researcher, mentor, and distinguished leader who deserves recognition for her immense impact on the discipline of radiology. This article serves to acknowledge and celebrate Dr. Meltzer for winning the 2023 American College of Radiology (ACR) Gold Medal. The ACR Gold Medal award is the highest honor awarded to distinguished radiologists with exceptional contributions to the field, and Dr. Meltzer is no exception. Her work with over 500 publications in hematopoiesis including erythropoiesis (Connie J. Gregory), and cancer stem cells, for which she obtained numerous awards, is recognized worldwide and widely cited. After her PhD training with Laszlo Lajtha in Manchester UK where she studied radiobiology and published her first "first author" paper in Nature, Connie carried out her post-doctoral training in Ontario Cancer Institute Toronto where she worked with James Till and Ernest McCulloch.
