Abstract:Urban wildlife ecology and conservation is a discipline worldwide in scope. Although some attention was given the subject in the early to mid-1900s, most activity in the field is of more recent origin. Many European countries have active programs and activities, including the United Kingdom-Man and the Biosphere (UK-MAB) Urban Forum and The Wildlife Trusts of England, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's MAB Program, and urban ecology research in Germany and Poland. The Netherlands' concept of “ecological landscapes” introduced a new approach to design of urban open space. Durban, South Africa followed with “D'MOSS,” a metropolitan open space system founded on the principles of island biogeography theory. The park connector network of Singapore combines principles of conservation biology and landscape planning. Urban wildlife programs and activities exist in the United States at the federal, state, and local levels as well as in private conservation organizations. The Wildlife Society established an Urban Affairs and Regional Planning Committee in the mid-1970s that later became the Urban Wildlife Committee and then evolved into the Urban Wildlife Working Group. Urban wildlife research is providing knowledge of wildlife and plant populations and communities in urban areas that hopefully will lead to better understanding and greater sustainability of urban ecosystems.

Abstract:SIGNIFICANCE: Recent research reveals that the arid western interior of South Africa has experienced substantially more humid conditions on several occasions during the last 70 000 years. These findings, likely regional in scope, speak to changes to the resource base available to prehistoric hunter-gatherers. Together with recent archaeological findings from this region, there has emerged a growing recognition that previously archaeologically overlooked areas of South Africa's arid interior need to be included in models of human history. This presents new challenges for archaeologists and palaeoclimatologists, particularly given the prevalence of surficial, rather than stratified, archaeological evidence throughout much of this region.

Her group leverages a range of organisms, including bats and the short-tailed opossum, to study the mechanisms underpinning mammalian evolution. Karen is a Guest Editor for Development's Special Issue on Uncovering Developmental Diversity, which highlights how unconventional model organisms are advancing our understanding of developmental biology. We caught up with Karen to find out more about her research, the importance of public engagement and the challenges of working with unusual organisms in the lab.

Abstract:In arid and semi-arid areas such as southern Africa, rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) middens represent an exceptionally valuable source of late Quaternary palaeoenvironmental information. Pollen and stable isotope data derived from two rock hyrax middens extracted from De Rif in the Cederberg Mountains of the southwestern Cape, casts new light on climatic changes that occurred across the Last Glacial–Interglacial Transition (LGIT) and the Holocene (19.5–0.7calkBP) and how the region's vegetation responded to these changes. Significant changes in vegetation community composition would be expected in response to environmental changes characteristic of the contrast between ‘glacial’ and ‘interglacial’ climates. However, the pollen assemblages in general indicate that mountain fynbos remained dominant throughout the record and that most of the pollen taxa exhibited only muted frequency variations. This finding could be considered to be inconsistent with indications of marked climatic variations recorded in the stable isotope records for the same midden. An analysis of the geological setting and the bioclimatic affinities of the taxa suggest that the explanation for this inconsistency may lie in the dominating influence of sandstone substrates and the relative resilience of mountain fynbos vegetation to climate change.
Performing multispecies studies in Southern Africa: historical legacies, marginalised subjects, reflexive positionalities

Abstract:Multispecies studies are known for tackling human exceptionalism. Whilst the field has seen a remarkable increase in popularity amongst scholars in the humanities and social sciences, critiques argue that it neglects inequalities and consequential differences amongst humans and between humans and other-than-humans. These critiques are especially relevant in the context of Southern Africa, where extreme inequalities amongst humans persist whilst wildlife is often perceived to enjoy a favoured position in the region's prominent conservation industries. As four researchers working in a multispecies study project focusing on the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area in Southern Africa, we pose the question of what a politicised multispecies studies might look like. In this article, we share our thoughts and reflections on working in this complex political landscape. Using insights from our own fields, we share some of the persistent concerns encountered during fieldwork and discuss and contextualise these by drawing on multispecies literature that deals with similar concerns. We identify three salient themes that should inform and politicise multispecies work in postcolonial conservation landscapes: historical legacies, reflexive positionalities and marginalised subjects.

Abstract:Humans have shaped the environment through landscape transformation, disturbance, and resource exploitation, leading to major habitat modification and fragmentation. Mammal species are massively threatened by these changes and their diversity implies various responses to human disturbance. It is essential to understand the conditions for their persistence in human-dominated landscapes, and the drivers of humans-mammals' coexistence to apply relevant conservation measures. The Garden Route Biosphere Reserve, in South Africa, a mosaic landscapes where human activities and wildlife meet, is an ideal site to examine how anthropogenic attributes influence wildlife occurrence. To maximise our area coverage through a replicable, low-cost protocol, we designed an online survey aimed at residents to investigate the effect of landscape metrics and property attributes — the availability and type of anthropogenic resources, the integrity and type of natural habitats, structural disturbances and interferences — on the persistence of mammals in such environments. We collected data from 247 respondents and modelled the drivers of occurrence for 14 mammal species (>500 g). We found species-specific responses to synthetic variables describing anthropogenic features in the studied landscape and used the anthropodependence framework to categorise species profiles. We showed that human disturbance combined with the availability of anthropogenic resources and natural habitats defined various categories of species profiles, which should require differential conservation actions. Local ecological knowledge proved promising to understand conditions for mammal persistence in human-dominated landscapes. This method also allowed researchers to engage with a wide variety of stakeholders, thus creating a hub for knowledge exchange.

Abstract:The world is firmly cemented in a notitian age (Latin: notitia, meaning data) – drowning in data, yet thirsty for information and the synthesis of knowledge into understanding. As concerns over biodiversity declines escalate, the volume, diversity and speed at which new environmental and ecological data are generated has increased exponentially. Data availability primes the research and discovery engine driving biodiversity conservation. South Africa (SA) is poised to become a world leader in biodiversity conservation. However, continent-wide resource limitations hamper the establishment of inclusive technologies and robust platforms and tools for biodiversity informatics. In this perspectives piece, we bring together the opinions of 37 co-authors from 20 different departments, across 10 SA universities, 7 national and provincial conservation research agencies, and various institutes and private conservation, research and management bodies, to develop a way forward for biodiversity informatics in SA. We propose the development of a SA Biodiversity Informatics Hub and describe the essential components necessary for its design, implementation and sustainability. We emphasise the importance of developing a culture of cooperation, collaboration and interoperability among custodians of biodiversity data to establish operational workflows for data synthesis. However, our biggest challenges are misgivings around data sharing and multidisciplinary collaboration. We recommend a system that is free, user friendly, functional, stable, integrative and designed to cater for different data access agreement levels. Sharing data through this pipeline will directly advance the science and practice of conservation, giving multiple stakeholders and decision-makers access to valuable biodiversity data to support research and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract:Fire plays a pivotal role in driving ecological shifts between Mediterranean‐type vegetation and subtropical ecosystems in South Africa. This study investigates long‐term environmental dynamics and ecological regime changes at the Mediterranean‐type vegetation /subtropical boundary using a 6000‐year palaeoecological sequence from the Baviaanskloof – a region of South Africa characterized by high levels of biodiversity and climate dynamism. Combining fossil pollen and microcharcoal data from a rock hyrax Procavia capensis midden, we analyse vegetation responses to environmental changes. Our findings reveal that Mediterranean‐type vegetation resilience prevailed until ca 2800 cal year BP when a major fire event triggered a transition to a subtropical thicket‐dominated environment. This abrupt ecological turnover underscores the significance of fire as a major driver of vegetation change at the Mediterranean‐type vegetation /subtropical boundary. Our study emphasizes the vulnerability of Mediterranean‐type vegetation ecosystems to global environmental change, suggesting potential implications for similar biome boundaries worldwide. By integrating multi‐proxy palaeoecological evidence, we gain insights into the resilience and vulnerability of these ecosystems, aiding in understanding future responses to climate change scenarios.

Fire and Montane Vegetation Dynamics Through Successive Phases of Human Occupation in the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa

Abstract:Palaeoecological evidence is compared with the existing archaeological record to understand how changing human activity, over the past two millennia, impacted fire regimes and vegetation dynamics in the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa. Sediment cores from two wetland sites in the Cathedral Peak area of the northern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal are dated using accelerator mass spectrometry to chronologically support biological proxy data. Fossil pollen analysis is used to detect changes in vegetation composition, and macroscopic charcoal to reconstruct changing fire regimes. Charcoal accumulation rates (CHAR) are used as a proxy for burned biomass, and charcoal width-to-length ratio (W/L) as a proxy for dominant fuel type, whether grassy or woody. Results indicate an increase in CHAR, coincident with the appearance of cereal-type grasses (>40 mu m) c. 550 cal BP, suggesting a change in fire regimes associated with the arrival of early agropastoralists. A notable decline in charcoal W/L at this time indicates a shift towards a more grassy fuel type. This is consistent with a seasonal shift in the timing of ignitions from high intensity late season lightning fires to low intensity early season anthropogenic fires. The latter are less damaging to woody vegetation explaining an overall shift to a more grassy fuel type. Large scale ecosystem change is evident in the colonial period, including decreased forest pollen taxa such as Podocarpus, which may be linked to colonial period logging. The increased dominance of Pteridium spores documents the invasion trajectory of bracken fern into montane grasslands in the area, which is attributed to ecosystem disturbance in the form of colonial fire suppression. The subalpine wetland clearly documents woody encroachment of the surrounding open grassland landscape during the agropastoral and subsequent colonial periods. By contrast, at the montane wetland site, these trends appear to be overprinted by local forest dynamics and recent deforestation, likely an elevation effect. Palaeoecological evidence demonstrates how changes in fire regimes and vegetation composition in the northern Drakensberg are closely tied to human activity over the past two millennia.

Abstract:The current global warming controversy has sparked vigorous research activity, the ultimate aim of which is to understand the effects of predicted climatic changes on both natural and managed ecosystems. In the search for reliable and appropriate models of ecosystem response, the evidence of climate and vegetation change from the past has frequently been promoted as a valuable guide to the future. In this paper the logic of using information from the geological past is reviewed and it is concluded that the value of such evidence lies not so much in the provision of palaeoanalogues for future ecosystems, but in the insights that vegetation history can yield as to the processes accompanying climatic change. This point is made with reference to the late Quaternary vegetation history of the mountain fynbos communities in the Cederberg, SW Cape. Apparently subtle shifts in plant community features during the late Pleistocene-Holocene transition might, at first sight, support the contention that fynbos is potentially unresponsive to climatic changes and that its survival under globally warmed climatic scenarios is therefore assured. Closer inspection of the fossil pollen evidence, however, reveals some characteristics of the vegetation history which suggest that, given the contemporary situation of fragmented, insular natural communities and altered disturbance conditions, the future of mountain and, more especially, lowland fynbos communitites is indeed severely threatened by climatic change. Mitigatory measures to ensure the continued survival of the species-rich and biogeographically unique fynbos biome are presented.
Engendering Community Support for Conservation: A Case Study of Kekana Gardens Community and Dinokeng Game Reserve, South Africa

Abstract:Journal of Asian and African Studies, Ahead of Print. Successful conservation in Africa hinges on the perceptions of communities bordering protected areas. It is therefore vital for protected area stakeholders to know the perceptions of neighbouring communities in order to determine the factors that generate or undermine community support for conservation, so that appropriate management interventions can be implemented. Numerous studies consider benefits, but less relate to perceptions regarding both losses/costs and intangible benefits. This paper demonstrates a methodology with which to determine these factors, focusing on Kekana Gardens community, bordering Dinokeng Game Reserve, in Gauteng Province, South Africa. This qualitative study with 13 residents utilised focus group interviews and adapted nominal grouping technique. Six themes emerged, four of which comprise intangible benefits. This methodology can be applied to any community bordering a conservation area, assisting in crafting solutions that benefit both people and parks.

Abstract:Abstract Accurate information on wildlife occurrence in anthropogenic landscapes is essential to develop effective conservation measures. Monitoring multiple mammal species in heterogeneous landscapes can be challenging because of the diversity of land‐uses and species behaviors. Therefore, different monitoring methods are better adapted to different contexts. We compared data obtained from camera traps with data gathered through an online survey to document the presence of mammal species in mosaic landscapes of the Garden Route Biosphere Reserve in South Africa. The survey detected the same 15 species as the camera traps as well as the additional common duiker. Both methods effectively detected most large mammal species, whereas results were less consistent for smaller species and carnivores. Combining the two methods enabled us to produce more robust estimates of species absence and confirm species presence reported by survey respondents. In less disturbed areas, respondents with good ecological knowledge were effective at monitoring mammal species, while extending the spatial coverage of the study. Bearing in mind the limitations of each method, camera traps and an online survey could complement each other if combined. Together, they can provide a more comprehensive understanding of mammal communities in anthropogenic landscapes, increasing both spatial coverage and the number of species sightings.

Abstract:The southwestern Cape Province of South Africa is the core region of the Cape Floristic Kingdom, one of six such large-scale phytogeographical units and by far the smallest. The region possesses one of the richest plant communities in the world when measured in terms of plant species numbers per unit area and many different hypotheses have been advanced in order to explain this prolific diversity. Historical processes and evolutionary development through time are frequently invoked as explanations, but remarkably little is known of the historical biogeography of the region and fossil-bearing sediments have yielded only a fragmented picture of the temporal development of the flora. Late Quaternary terrestrial sediments offer an opportunity to investigate the more recent history of the flora, although here too there exist several constraints which limit the precision of palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. For the moment, knowledge of late Quaternary vegetation history is restricted to upland sites of organic sediment accumulation, although an increasingly detailed picture of vegetation development against a backdrop of environmental changes is emerging. This paper reviews the evidence from several fossil pollen-bearing sediments in the mountains of the southwestern Cape and presents a vegetation history for the last 14,500 years. We draw the somewhat surprising conclusion of relative vegetation stability during the time of marked climatic and environmental dynamism elsewhere. The hypothesis that assumed limited vegetation change could be a consequence of high species richness coupled with low pollen identification resolution is tested using multiple-discriminant analysis. It is argued that apparently subtle shifts in vegetation community patterns did indeed prevail during the late Quaternary. This possibly has some important implications for the evolution and maintenance of high plant species diversity in the Cape Floristic Region.

Abstract:Arid environments provide ideal ground for investigating the mechanisms of adaptive evolution. High temperatures and low water availability are relentless stressors for many endotherms, including birds; yet birds persist in deserts. While physiological adaptation probably involves metabolic phenotypes, the underlying mechanisms (plasticity, genetics) are largely uncharacterized. To explore this, we took an intraspecific approach that focused on a species that is resident over a mesic to arid gradient, the Karoo scrub-robin (Cercotrichas coryphaeus). Specifically, we integrated environmental (climatic and primary productivity), physiological (metabolic rates: a measure of energy expenditure), genotypic (genetic variation underlying the machinery of energy production) and microbiome (involved in processing food from where energy is retrieved) data, to infer the mechanism of physiological adaptation. We that found the variation in energetic physiology phenotypes and gut microbiome composition are associated with environmental features as well as with variation in genes underlying energy metabolic pathways. Specifically, we identified a small list of candidate adaptive genes, some of them with known ties to relevant physiology phenotypes. Together our results suggest that selective pressures on energetic physiology mediated by genes related to energy homeostasis and possibly microbiota composition may facilitate adaptation to local conditions and provide an explanation to the high avian intraspecific divergence observed in harsh environments.
A Century of Quaternary Studies in Southern Africa: A Historical Perspective

Abstract:Quaternary palynology as a discipline evolved historically in northern hemisphere temperate environments where conditions favourable to the preservation of pollen facilitated its application to the reconstruction of vegetation history and, through interpretation, palaeoenvironments. Such studies in Africa started much later and, in southern Africa, were only initiated when E.M. van Zinderen Bakker joined the Department of Botany in what is now known as the University of the Free State in the late 1940s. This paper explores the early work and influence of van Zinderen Bakker and his first PhD student, J.A. (Joey) Coetzee and tracks the course of the emerging science through to the present day. The sustained basis of van Zinderen Bakker's work was pollen analysis and the laboratory quickly developed a substantial pollen reference collection to support the research. Forays into tropical Africa were followed by work on organic sediments in South Africa. The relatively limited occurrence of suitable wetland deposits in the region led to the group exploring opportunities for what were (at least in the 1970s and 1980s) regarded as less ‘conventional’ deposits, including pan sediments, cave sediments and even coprolites. A second Quaternary palaeoecological research centre was developed by the author, initially at Rhodes University, and led to palaeoecological laboratories being established at the University of Cape Town and subsequently at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Meanwhile, at the University of the Witwatersrand, a strong palaeontological and palaeoanthropological research thrust led to the development of related studies there. While typically associated with only small numbers of Masters and PhD students, initiatives at all three of these centres have been associated with an increase in the number and geographical range of studies as well as in the diversity of palaeoecological proxies. The rise in international collaboration together with methodological developments and improvements in temporal resolution have enabled Quaternary palynological studies in the region to play an important role in the understanding of past environments in southern Africa.

Abstract:SIGNIFICANCE: Uploading unreviewed manuscripts to a preprint server promotes accessibility and facilitates rapid breakthroughs. We, however, question the motivation of Berger and colleagues who used the new eLife publishing model to launch what appeared to be a carefully curated media campaign around an unreviewed narrative, thereby manipulating accepted norms in scientific publishing. This team has engaged in ostentatious public displays under the guise of promoting science, including launching precious fossil remains into space. Given these ethical concerns, we call on the public, heritage and scientific practitioners to reflect on the current state, and future, of human evolution research.

The Role of Quaternary Environmental Change in the Evolution of Landscapes: Case Studies from Southern Africa

Abstract:The paper begins by examining the importance of southern African Quaternary environmental change. The Quaternary is characterised by repeated climatic changes of considerable amplitude; analysis of these fluctuations reveals the ubiquity of change and the fundamental dynamism of earth systems. Change is normal and, despite the fact that southern Africa was not subject to Quaternary glaciation per se, the influence of variations in, say, amount and seasonality of rainfall, has been very marked indeed. The Quaternary also represents the time period during which people have become a dominant environmental agent in the subcontinent; southern Africa has played a crucial role in the evolution of hominids and their development has been influenced strongly by accompanying environmental change. The relationship between geomorphology and climate in southern Africa is explored, revealing the degree and extent to which its landscapes are determined by changing environmental conditions, especially during the Tertiary and Quaternary; how apparent is the legacy of the past? This leads to a consideration of the types of geomorphological evidence, some more reliable than others, that can be utilised in order to reveal the details of Quaternary environmental change. Arid and semiarid landscapes appear to preserve more evidence of former environmental conditions, although high contemporary erosion rates and the paucity of long terrestrial-sedimentary sequences hinder their complete elucidation. Two case studies of Quaternary change in the subcontinent are presented, from the southwestern Cape and Namibia. These examples document the increasing intensity of human impact on landscapes to the extent that people now play the dominant geomorphological role, especially in semiarid and coastal areas. The conclusion offers pointers as to how geomorphological evidence of Quaternary change can be used to assist in the better management of contemporary and future environmental conditions.
