Abstract:A variety of preparation methods of alumina powder used in ceramic industry are reviewed. The corresponding principles and processes are also discussed. With the development of science and technology , the demand of ultra - fine, high - purity alumina powder is increased. A brief survey of its preparation methods is given, the present status of alumina industry development in China is analysed and some suggestions to improve its competitiveness are presented.

Abstract:Porous alumina ceramics are widely used in various fields because of their unique characteristics in structure and properties. This article mainly provided an overview of preparation techniques of porous alumina ceramics; besides, the principles and the characteristics of pore-forming agents processes, gel-casting processes, freeze-casting processes,anodizing processes and other common processes in obtaining the required properties of porous alumina ceramics were introduced. Meanwhile, the relevant applications and the performance of porous alumina ceramics were described. The research prospects of porous alumina ceramics were put forward based on the research status at the end of this paper.

Abstract:High purity alumina, alumina with a purity of 99.99% or higher, has been widely used for various applications, for instance, ceramics, thermally conductive fillers, battery materials and sapphire single crystals. Among several manufacturing methods for high purity alumina, we have established mass-production technology using hydrolysis of aluminum alkoxide. In some applications of high purity alumina, there are technical problems to be solved. Two applications are described in this article. First, higher mechanical strength and corrosion resistance are required for ceramic parts of semiconductor manufacturing equipments. In order to obtain these properties, we have developed nano-sized α-alumina which has round and uniform particle shape with sharp particle size distribution. This alumina, NXA-150, can be sintered at a low temperature. Second, in the thermal interface material application, demands for electrical insulating and thermally conductive fillers are increasing. We have developed large size alumina (260 μm) which can reduce filler/resin interface and increase thermal conductivity of filler/resin composites.

Abstract:Spherical alumina with a purity greater than 99.999% is calcined by the precursor obtained from the reaction of high-purity aluminum with ultrapure water, which is of great interest for grinding in semiconductor processing and other fields. In this study, tetramethylammonium hydroxide is introduced to the aluminum-water (Al-H 2 O) reaction, and the crystal growth of the HPA precursor is adjusted by ultrasonication. The ultrasound can break the gas barrier film at the early stage of the reaction, then increase the reaction potential energy on the aluminum surface, accelerate the reaction rate, and inhibit the preferential growth of Al(OH) 3 crystals along (110), (111), (131), and (202) faces. It increases the dissociation rate of crystals in the corresponding crystal faces and promotes the formation of the Al-O bond in Al(OH) 3 and Al 2 O 3 to obtain fine HPA precursors with uniform size distribution. Then, the ultrafine and sphere-like α-Al 2 O 3 powders with a particle size D 50 of 370 nm are prepared after calcination at 1250 °C.

Abstract:The techniques of preparing nanocrystalline alumina powders were reviewed.The methods mainly include sol-gel,precipitation,microemulsion,and detonation.The advanced sintering techniques such as hot-pressed sintering,microwave sintering and spark plasma sintering were also described.Comparing with the conventional ones,nanocrystalline alumina ceramics using these new sintering techniques exhibit more superior properties.
PURIFICATION OF TAN RAI ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE WITH ACETIC ACID AND PREPARATION OF HIGH PURE NANOSIZE α-ALUMINA

Abstract:Gibbsite is the most common form of aluminum hydroxide (AH) as commercial product of Bayer process. However, it usually contains some impurities such as sodium, iron, calcium, and silicon compounds that may not meet requirements for preparation of advanced materials or functional ones which need very high pure raw materials. In this paper, we present some results on the purification of commercial AH from Tan-rai alumina company (Vietnam) using dilute acetic acid solution. The removal yields of 93.19, 91.75, 100, and 86.03% are obtained for Na2O, CaO, Fe2O3, and SiO2 respectively, whereas the recovery of clean AH is almost quantitative. The clean AH is then used for preparation of high pure nanosize α-alumina via chemical processes of dissolution, precipitation ammonium aluminium carbonate hydroxide (AACH) with ammonium carbonate solution. After washing the excess reagents, the precipitate of AACH is then decomposed at elevated temperature to get high pure nanosize α-alumina. The obtained product rather regular and most of particles are not agglomerated. The laser scattering data on the prepared sample show that the particle sizes of the prepared α-alumina from 60 – 90 nm are obtained which are in good agreement with the data from XRD and morphology measurements. The α-alumina structure of the final product is confirmed by the XRD measurement data.

Abstract:Abstract High-purity alumina refers to ultra-fine alumina powder with a purity exceeding 99.99% and a uniform particle size. This material exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, wear resistance, and oxidation resistance. Owing to the high silicon content of alumina prepared by means of the alcohol-aluminum hydrolysis method, the purity of the alumina is often unsatisfactory. Therefore, in this work, a new method for adding lanthanum oxide to isopropanol in the early aluminum isopropoxide synthesis stage is proposed. When lanthanum oxide was added, the silicon content of the precursor aluminum isopropoxide decreased to 0.0051%.Remove calcium, sodium, magnesium and other impurities by cleaning with hydrochloric acid under an ultrasonic field. The optimal hydrolysis conditions were determined as follows: hydrolysis temperature: 55, hydrolysate concentration: 80%, water to alkoxide ratio: 6:1. The alumina precursor calcined at 1200 yielded a high-purity alumina with a purity level of more than 99.99%, and the particle size reaches 2.037 μm.

Abstract:Nano Al2 O3 was obtained in batch by using nano pulverized machine HLG-30.Size and size distribution of the nano Al2 O3 were traced by the nano laser size analyzer,at the same time,the size and morphology of the particles were characterized by using SEM and TEM.The structure of nano Al2 O3 was detected by XRD,The ICP-AES was employed to test the contents of impurity element and the purity quotient was researched.The results showed that the pulverized nano Al2 O3 got a narrow particle size distribution and the size of most of the particles was under 40 nm,which was characterized in alpha crystal form.The product caught a high purity surpassing 99.99% and there would be a good application.

Abstract:An intensified Bayer process (high temperature, high pressure, and high alkalinity) was used to recover Al2O3 to prepare nano-layer-structure Al2O3 powders using Al2O3 concentrate separated from large-scale pyrite tailings as the raw material. This process consisted of four main steps: pretreatment of the concentrate, leaching of the Al2O3, decomposition of the sodium aluminate solution, and sintering of the decomposed product at a high temperature. The results of the orthogonal leaching experiment revealed that the relative leaching efficiency (eta R) of Al2O3 reached 98.28% under the optimum conditions: TL = 280 degrees C, tL = 90 min, cNaOH = 9 N, and L/S = 4. The results of the kinetic analysis indicated that the leaching reactions followed the unreacted-shrinkage-nuclearreaction model controlled by solid film diffusion. After decomposition and sintering under proper conditions, fine Al2O3 powders composed of many tiny clusters with a nano-layer structure were finally prepared. The purity of the Al2O3 products reached 99.23%, and all of the chemical compositions of the Al2O3 products nearly met the grade I quality standard requirement in China. Additionally, TiO2 was effectively enriched to 9.74% in the leaching residue. This study demonstrated that the concentrates with abundant reserves were an important Al2O3 resource.

Abstract:As a useful approach the reverse microemulsion method was used to prepare the high thermal-stabile alumina-substrate materials with high surface area at high temperature. After calcined at 1100°C for 10h, alumina, barium-doped alumina, and silicon-doped alumina synthesized by the reverse microemulsion method exist, still as the transition alumina phase including γ-phase, δ-phase and θ-phase; their particles are nanometer-size and rod shape, the size distribution of its particle is very uniform, and their BET surface areas remain 52, 90 and 175m2g−1, respectively. This method claims its superiority at two points: the raw materials are inorganic salts which are cheap and obtained easy, and the synthesis procedure is simple and easy to perform. As the comparative examples, three samples above prepared by the sol–gel method exist mainly as α alumina phase and their BET surface areas are 20, 24 and 117m2g−1, respectively.

Abstract:In view of the increasing scarcity of bauxite resources in China, the high energy consumption and high pollution of electrolytic aluminum, and the requirements for energy conservation and environmental protection, aluminum recycling and high-value utilization of its derivatives have evolved into a crucial development requirement for the aluminum industry in the future. As an important part of the development of recycled aluminum resources, the high-value application of scrap aluminum cans has always been a hot research topic in various recycled aluminum processing enterprises and scientific research units. The traditional regeneration system of waste cans includes a series of complex technological processes such as pretreatment, paint removal, smelting system and casting system, which is difficult to control in the middle of the process. Most of the recycled scrap aluminum cans are cast and downgraded for later use, except for a part of them used as alloy materials for new cans. In this paper, combined with the research on the preparation of metal aluminum alkoxide, combined with recrystallization heat conduction to further study the effective dissolution or adsorption how to remove impurity elements to obtain high-purity aluminum alcohol salt mechanism research, and thermal effect of alcohols with different carbon chains on the synthesis of high-purity aluminum alkoxide was further investigated. Moreover, the changes in morphology and pore size distribution of hydrolyzed alumina precursor materials under different hydrothermal temperature conditions were discussed by means of the alkoxide hydrolysis-sol-gel process. Eventually, the aluminum alkoxide was obtained by the reaction of waste cans with isopropanol and heavy crystal thermal conductivity, and the high-purity aluminum alkoxide was purified by vacuum distillation. Under the hydrothermal condition of 160°C, the high-purity alumina material with a purity of 99.99% and an original crystal size of 200nm was prepared.

Abstract:Aluminum and aluminum-based alloys have been used for many years. In view of the increase in material purity requirements of advanced technology products, research regarding high-purity aluminum has gained significant attention in recent years. In this review, we seek to describe the fundamental purification principles and the mechanisms of various segregation techniques used to produce high-purity aluminum. Moreover, we aim to provide an overview of high-purity aluminum production, with particular emphasis on: (a) principles on how to produce high-purity aluminum by layer- and suspension-based segregation methods; (b) discussion of various influencing process parameters for each technique, including three-layer electrolysis, vacuum distillation, organic electrolysis, suspension-based segregation, zone melting, Pechiney, Cooled Finger, and directional solidification; as well as (c) investigations of fundamental working principles of various segregation methods and corresponding reported end-purification for the production of HP-Al. Eventually, the end-reported product purity, and advantages and disadvantages of various purification methods and technologies are summarized. By analyzing and comparing the characteristics of different methods, we put forward suggestions for realizing efficient and environmentally friendly production of high-purity aluminum in the future.

Abstract:Fine-grained pure alumina ceramics were fabricated by hot-pressing process from a commercial gamma-Al2O3 powder. The relations between mechanical properties, microstructure and hot-pressing temperature were discussed. Two kinds of alumina ceramics were obtained under different hot-pressing conditions. One, the particle size was about 0.5 mu m and its flexure strength was 500+/-45MPa at 1450 degrees C/30min, and the other, fracture toughness was 5.7+/-0.5MPa.m(1/2) at 1550 degrees C/30min. Also, the effect of MgO additives on alumina ceramics was studied. The results showed that the process was the critical factor to decide the role of MgO additives. Moreover, under the hot-pressing conditions of 1420 degrees C/30min, the alumina with relative density of 99.3% and flexure strength of 584+/-51MPa was obtained.

Abstract:The properties of abrasives have great influences on the surface qualities of glass substrate, hard disk, etc [1] , during the chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process. α-Al 2 O 3 particles, as one of the most widely used abrasives in CMP slurries, often cause great surface defects because of its high hardness and unfeasible control of agglomeration during the synthesizing process [2,3] . In this paper, spherical nanocomposite alumina powders with particle sizes of 10-50 nm were prepared, via a homogeneous precipitation method. The structures and surface morphologies of the alumina nanopowders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The results showed that the nanopowders composed of both alpha and theta phase alumina, which had a small particle size and narrow size distributions. The CMP investigations performed on glass substrate showed that the nanocomposite alumina abrasives exhibited a better surface planarization performance than the pure single alpha phase Al2O3 nanopowders, with lower surface roughnesses and less scratches after CMP process. The results indicated that the current processing for the synthesis of nanocomposite Al 2 O 3 powders were of great potentials for practical applications of Al 2 O 3 based abrasives.

Abstract:In this study a simple ecologically benign technology of high purity alumina production is presented. The synthesis process consists of three steps) oxidation of aluminum in water at temperature of 90 °C) calcinations of Al hydroxide in atmosphere at 1100 °C) high temperature vacuum processing of aluminum alpha oxide at 1750 °C. Oxidation of aluminum scrap was carried out under intensive mixing in water with small addition of KOH as a catalyst. It was shown that under implemented experimental conditions alkali was continuously regenerated during oxidation reaction and synergistic effect of low content alkali aqueous solution and intensive mixing worked. The product of oxidation of aluminum scrap is the powder of Al(OH)3. Then it can be preliminary granulated or directly subjected to thermal treatment deleting the impurities from the product (aluminum oxide). It was shown the possibility to produce the high-purity aluminum oxide of 5N grade (99.999 %). Aluminum oxide, synthesized by means of the proposed method, meets the requirements of industrial manufacturers of synthetic sapphire (aluminum oxide monocrystals). Obtained high pure aluminum oxide can be also used for the manufacture of implants, artificial joints, microscalpels, high-purity ceramics and other refractory shapes for manufacture of ultra-pure products.
Preparation of Alumina from High-aluminum Fly Ash by Improved Acid and Alkali Combination Method: an Experimental Study

Abstract:High-aluminum fly ash is an industrial waste.In order to reduce its pollution to environment,high-aluminum fly ash was used as raw material and Na_2CO_3 used as an auxiliary agent to make the best of Al_2O_3 component in this experiment.First,sodium aluminate liquor was prepared by sintering the mixture at intermediate temperature,acid-leaching for desilication,alkali-leaching for removing iron,and barium aluminate for further desilication.Then,Al(OH)_3 seed was introduced into the purified solution to agglomerate Al(OH)_3 particles by seed precipitation.Finally,α-Al_2O_3 product was prepared by calcining of the Al(OH)_3 precipitate at 1200℃ for 2 hours.The analytical results indicate that the prepared α-Al_2O_3 powder is irregular in shape with granular size of less than 10μm in diameter.Its function meets that of the China National Chemical Standard GB8178-87.This technique is in accordance with the requirements of development of the circulation economy in China.This sort of high-aluminum fly ash is a potential alumina resource in the future.
