Abstract:γ-alumina has been used most widely in the area of alumina catalyst carrier.In the paper,the application and the preparation technology of active alumina catalyst carrier were reviewed.Furthermore,the active alumina was modified by improving the method of preparation,adding agents and choosing the right precursor.Catalyst carriers including γ-alumina with larger specific surface area,suitable pore size distribution,excellent thermal stability was developed.

Abstract:High purity alumina, alumina with a purity of 99.99% or higher, has been widely used for various applications, for instance, ceramics, thermally conductive fillers, battery materials and sapphire single crystals. Among several manufacturing methods for high purity alumina, we have established mass-production technology using hydrolysis of aluminum alkoxide. In some applications of high purity alumina, there are technical problems to be solved. Two applications are described in this article. First, higher mechanical strength and corrosion resistance are required for ceramic parts of semiconductor manufacturing equipments. In order to obtain these properties, we have developed nano-sized α-alumina which has round and uniform particle shape with sharp particle size distribution. This alumina, NXA-150, can be sintered at a low temperature. Second, in the thermal interface material application, demands for electrical insulating and thermally conductive fillers are increasing. We have developed large size alumina (260 μm) which can reduce filler/resin interface and increase thermal conductivity of filler/resin composites.

Abstract:Alumina has been used as a catalyst for ozonation, surface hydroxyl on which is regarded as the active center for ozone attack, but the influences of hydroxyl generation are still vague. Here, we prepared alumina with different hydroxyl concentrations by adjusting calcination temperatures, of which the catalytic activity was evaluated with the mineralization degree of phenol, and then revealed the active sites of hydroxyl generation with characterization of XRD, Py-IR, and NH3-TPD. The results show that the greater the hydroxyl concentration, the higher the catalytic activity, demonstrating that surface hydroxyl contributes to its catalytic activity. The effect of calcination temperatures on hydroxyl concentration and catalytic activity is in accordance with the amount of weak Lewis acid sites on the surface of alumina, illustrating the surface hydroxyl derived from the decomposition of water adsorbed on weak Lewis acid sites. However, the catalytic performance of the alumina decreases slowly in a long-term reaction owing to the active center reduction resulted from the coverage by organic acids from phenol degradation. The present work reveals the influences of hydroxyl generation which are beneficial for adjusting surface hydroxyl regarded as active site for ozone attack and the reason of catalyst deactivation, which provides guideline for the rational design of catalyst.

Abstract:A variety of preparation methods of alumina powder used in ceramic industry are reviewed. The corresponding principles and processes are also discussed. With the development of science and technology , the demand of ultra - fine, high - purity alumina powder is increased. A brief survey of its preparation methods is given, the present status of alumina industry development in China is analysed and some suggestions to improve its competitiveness are presented.

Abstract:Alumina materials, as one of the cornerstones of the modern chemical industry, possess physical and chemical properties that include excellent mechanical strength and structure stability, which also make them highly suitable as catalyst supports. Alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts with the advantages of exceptional catalytic performance, flexible regulated surface metal/acid sites, and good regeneration ability have been widely used in many traditional chemical industry fields and have also shown great application prospects in emerging fields. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in alumina and its supported Pd-based catalysts. Specifically, the synthesis strategies, morphology transformation mechanisms, and structural properties of alumina with various morphologies are comprehensively summarized and discussed in-depth. Then, the preparation approaches of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts (impregnation, precipitation, and other emerging methods), as well as the metal-support interactions (MSIs), are revisited. Moreover, Some promising applications have been chosen as representative reactions in fine chemicals, environmental purification, and sustainable development fields to highlight the universal functionality of the alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts. The role of the Pd species, alumina support, promoters, and metal-support interactions in the enhancement of catalytic performance are also discussed. Finally, some challenges and upcoming opportunities in the academic and industrial application of the alumina and its supported Pd-based are presented and put forward.

Abstract:The properties of abrasives have great influences on the surface qualities of glass substrate, hard disk, etc [1] , during the chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process. α-Al 2 O 3 particles, as one of the most widely used abrasives in CMP slurries, often cause great surface defects because of its high hardness and unfeasible control of agglomeration during the synthesizing process [2,3] . In this paper, spherical nanocomposite alumina powders with particle sizes of 10-50 nm were prepared, via a homogeneous precipitation method. The structures and surface morphologies of the alumina nanopowders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The results showed that the nanopowders composed of both alpha and theta phase alumina, which had a small particle size and narrow size distributions. The CMP investigations performed on glass substrate showed that the nanocomposite alumina abrasives exhibited a better surface planarization performance than the pure single alpha phase Al2O3 nanopowders, with lower surface roughnesses and less scratches after CMP process. The results indicated that the current processing for the synthesis of nanocomposite Al 2 O 3 powders were of great potentials for practical applications of Al 2 O 3 based abrasives.

Abstract:Spherical alumina with a purity greater than 99.999% is calcined by the precursor obtained from the reaction of high-purity aluminum with ultrapure water, which is of great interest for grinding in semiconductor processing and other fields. In this study, tetramethylammonium hydroxide is introduced to the aluminum-water (Al-H 2 O) reaction, and the crystal growth of the HPA precursor is adjusted by ultrasonication. The ultrasound can break the gas barrier film at the early stage of the reaction, then increase the reaction potential energy on the aluminum surface, accelerate the reaction rate, and inhibit the preferential growth of Al(OH) 3 crystals along (110), (111), (131), and (202) faces. It increases the dissociation rate of crystals in the corresponding crystal faces and promotes the formation of the Al-O bond in Al(OH) 3 and Al 2 O 3 to obtain fine HPA precursors with uniform size distribution. Then, the ultrafine and sphere-like α-Al 2 O 3 powders with a particle size D 50 of 370 nm are prepared after calcination at 1250 °C.

Abstract:Bauxite ore (industrial raw material) and aluminum dross tailings (a local industrial waste material of the Aluminium Company of Egypt, Egyptalum) were used as two different parent materials to produce alumina. A set of six different preparation methods was applied to aluminum extracts from both materials. X-ray powder diffractometry, thermal and chemical analyses, and surface area and charge measurements were used to characterize the alumina products. The results indicate that catalytic grade, high-purity alumina products of uniform particle sizes could be obtained in large yields, depending solely on the preparation method applied, i.e., irrespective of the raw material used. Thus, aluminum dross tailings chemical waste is proved to be a feasible parent material for specialty alumina, which is an important finding both economically and environmentally.

Abstract:As an important inorganic material, alumina ceramic nanofibers have attracted more and more attention because of their excellent thermal stability, high melting point, low thermal conductivity, and good chemical stability. In this paper, the preparation conditions for alumina spinning gel, such as the experimental raw materials, spin finish aid, aging time, and so on, are briefly introduced. Then, various methods for preparing the alumina ceramic nanofibers are described, such as electrospinning, solution blow spinning, centrifugal spinning, and some other preparation processes. In addition, the application of alumina ceramic nanofibers in thermal insulation, high-temperature filtration, catalysis, energy storage, water restoration, sound absorption, bioengineering, and other fields are described. The wide application prospect of alumina ceramic nanofibers highlights its potential as an advanced functional material with various applications. This paper aims to provide readers with valuable insights into the design of alumina ceramic nanofibers and to explore their potential applications, contributing to the advancement of various technologies in the fields of energy, environment, and materials science.

Abstract:In view of the increasing scarcity of bauxite resources in China, the high energy consumption and high pollution of electrolytic aluminum, and the requirements for energy conservation and environmental protection, aluminum recycling and high-value utilization of its derivatives have evolved into a crucial development requirement for the aluminum industry in the future. As an important part of the development of recycled aluminum resources, the high-value application of scrap aluminum cans has always been a hot research topic in various recycled aluminum processing enterprises and scientific research units. The traditional regeneration system of waste cans includes a series of complex technological processes such as pretreatment, paint removal, smelting system and casting system, which is difficult to control in the middle of the process. Most of the recycled scrap aluminum cans are cast and downgraded for later use, except for a part of them used as alloy materials for new cans. In this paper, combined with the research on the preparation of metal aluminum alkoxide, combined with recrystallization heat conduction to further study the effective dissolution or adsorption how to remove impurity elements to obtain high-purity aluminum alcohol salt mechanism research, and thermal effect of alcohols with different carbon chains on the synthesis of high-purity aluminum alkoxide was further investigated. Moreover, the changes in morphology and pore size distribution of hydrolyzed alumina precursor materials under different hydrothermal temperature conditions were discussed by means of the alkoxide hydrolysis-sol-gel process. Eventually, the aluminum alkoxide was obtained by the reaction of waste cans with isopropanol and heavy crystal thermal conductivity, and the high-purity aluminum alkoxide was purified by vacuum distillation. Under the hydrothermal condition of 160°C, the high-purity alumina material with a purity of 99.99% and an original crystal size of 200nm was prepared.

Abstract:Aluminum oxide is one of the most commonly used materials in the industry. It is used in the field of catalysis, refractories, and optics. Despite the fact that there are many techniques available, there is still a great challenge in obtaining a material with desired and designed properties. Nevertheless, there is a great flexibility in making customized alumina materials with desired physicochemical properties synthesized by sol–gel methods. This work consists in characterizing the physicochemical properties of sol–gel synthesized aluminum oxide using different sol–gel preparation routes. Three different sols were obtained by using organic precursors and underwent thermal treatment. The structure (Middle Infrared Spectroscopy, Diffused Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and microstructure (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy) tests of the materials were carried out. The specific surface area was determined by using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. Thermal analysis was performed for all the powders, in order to analyze the specific temperature of materials transformation.

Abstract:The control of alumina morphology is crucial yet challenging for its various applications. Unfortunately, traditional methods for preparing alumina particles suffer from several limitations such as irregular morphology, poor dispersibility, and restricted application areas. In this study, we develop a novel method for preparing spherical mesoporous alumina using chitin and Pluronic P123 as mixed templates. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and the addition of mixed templates on the phase structure, micromorphology, and optical absorption properties of the samples were investigated. The experimental results indicate that lower temperature and shorter reaction time facilitated the formation of spherical mesoporous alumina with excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. The periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that both the (110) and (100) surfaces of γ-Al2O3 can strongly adsorb CO2. The difference in the amount of CO2 adsorbed by Al2O3 is mainly due to the different surface areas, which give different numbers of exposed active sites. This approach introduces a novel strategy for utilizing biological compounds to synthesize spherical alumina and greatly enhances mesoporous alumina's application efficiency in adsorption fields. Moreover, this study explored the electrochemical performance of the synthesized product using cyclic voltammetry, and improved loading of electrocatalysts and enhanced electrocatalytic activity were discovered.

Alumina sol multi-layer anti-oxidation coating for carbon anode in aluminum electrolysis

Abstract:In order to reduce the ratio of the anode oxidation and excessive anode consumption,the writer puts forward a method that the relatively compact alumina coatings(film),alumina sol as the basic cohere component, is prepared on carbon anode surface by original located solidification.In this paper,the alumina sol coating on carbon anode was prepared and its basic performances were examined.The results showed that from the room temperature to 900℃,hot weightlessness rate of samples of coated anode is lower 50% than the uncovered anode.Compact coating has not found holes and cracks even in the condition of enlarged 2,000 times.Its average aperture is only a few nanometer,and the average aperture of high-temperature coatings is smaller than the average aperture of low-temperature coatings,The average aperture on 900℃ is nearly 1/3 smaller than 600℃.This coating not only can play a strong role on protecting carbon at different temperatures,but also increase the temperature point of initial acute oxidation on the carbon anode surface.

Abstract:Activated alumina has a porous structure and large specific surface area. It is often used as a catalyst carrier for various reactions. Currently, solution-phase methods (sol–gel reactions) that cause environmental pollution and resource waste are often used to synthesise activated alumina. To overcome this disadvantage, in this study, an eco-friendly low-heat solid-phase precursor method was developed to prepare activated alumina with improved properties (phase stability and specific surface area). The difference between the activated alumina synthesised by this method and a sol–gel method was studied in terms of the specific surface area and high thermal stability. The results indicated that after 4 h of treatment at 1100 °C, pure activated alumina obtained by the low-heat solid-phase precursor method maintained the γ-phase and had a specific surface area of 92 m2/g and pore volume of 0.68 cm3/g. On the other hand, pure activated alumina produced by the sol–gel method mainly consisted of the α-phase and had a specific surface area of only 21 m2/g and a low pore volume of 0.16 cm3/g. Upon doping with La and Ba, and heat-treating at 1100 °C for 4 h, the specific surface areas of the activated alumina samples obtained by the low-heat solid-phase precursor method and sol–gel methods were 109 and 119 m2/g, respectively. When heated at high temperatures, the percentage loss of the specific surface area of the activated alumina synthesised by the low-heat solid-phase precursor method was lower than that of the sample obtained by the sol–gel method, indicating that it can inhibit the crystal-phase transformation of alumina at high temperatures.
