Abstract:I share my opinions on how to get the most out of conferences. I have some advice on giving talks, but most of the essay is devoted to the much larger share of the conference not spent giving talks: attending talks and socializing.

Abstract:Abstract One of the central features of the traditional professorial career, the academic conference, can provoke dramatically different responses; for academics of a certain age and established status, the conference is a source of nostalgia. And a number of academic novels, particularly David Lodge’s Small World , celebrate the conference in nostalgic terms. At the same time the conference can be challenged on many fronts, including its cost but, even more, its role in catering to, and perpetuating, privilege in the academy, or what one observer calls “the continued feudalization of academia.” Lodge’s original title, We Can’t Go On Meeting Like This , may have been prophetic, as the challenges to continuing to meet “like this,” particularly the resentment of angry academic outsiders, may overcome the nostalgic enjoyment of the traditional conference.

Abstract:A major activity in the life of an academic is the professional conference. It is common knowledge that this is a place to present your research, but what about other benefits of attending a conference? Online surveys were distributed to delegates of the 3rd and 4th International Marine Conservation Congresses (IMCCs), with respondents' (n = 100) feedback including that the congresses provided useful new information that will aid: (1) their research (58%); (2) in-the-field conservation (29%); (3) conservation communication (46%); and (4) conservation and management policy making (45%). They also reported gaining new techniques (56%), skills (64%), and novel ideas (70%) to further their research/careers. Nearly all (91%) gained new contacts that improved their research, in-the-field conservation, science communication, and/or conservation policy making. Two thirds (64%) gained ideas, contacts, and/or lessons could lead to publications. Over a third (39%) gained new ideas, contacts and/or lessons that led to grant proposals, and 36% gained contacts that led to funding. A conference is not just an avenue for a scientist to present their research to the wider community, but it can be an important venue for brainstorming, networking and making vital connections that can lead to new initiatives, papers and funding, in a way that virtual, online meetings cannot. This is why conferences matter.

Abstract:While travelling around the UK this conference season, I've been considering the differences between today's conferences and those I attended over the 30 years before the covid pandemic. There's palpable joy in watching people connect. Social media and the internet have helped to democratise knowledge, meaning that those who can't attend in person can gatecrash electronically by following a hashtag, as presenters' best slides and posters are displayed on social media.The difficult bit is what happens after the conference. What we learn feels good at the time, and it all makes sense. But then the detail fades, and we're left with the guilt of knowing what we should be doing but not being able to do it. This adds to a sense of moral injury as delegates return to their overcommitted NHS jobs.So, how can we apply the amazing work that others present at conferences? For most initiatives it's not...

The secret of good conversation--investing in success

Abstract:Organisations are created by conversations. They are key in all decisions. Negative conversations are familiar and a big investment in failure. We can learn to have positive and creative conversations and to make them even more effective by understanding differences and "talking each other's language". There are two models for successful conversations which the author uses in organisation and team development: The Mobius Model (Stockton, 1996) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The Mobius maps the six stages of effective conversations and enables teams to identify strengths and gaps in how they work. The MBTI provides a logical framework of personality difference which increases mutual understanding, supports the different stages of Mobius conversations, and enables people to identify and respond positively to others who are unlike themselves. The impact of learning these models can be--and frequently is--dramatically improved outcomes.

Abstract:The art of the scientific presentation -- much like the art of the perfect plot, the art of the compelling proposal, and the art of the killer job application -- is generally not something we're taught in school. Therefore, in classic Millennial style, one of the first things I did when I was asked to write this piece was to ask Google, "how to give a scientific presentation," to see what the Internet had to say. I've attempted to avoid boring you with laundry lists of "do's" and "don'ts," as many of the top Google hits did. However, I have incorporated a wide range of tips -- and some interesting vignettes -- both from the online hive mind and from my approximately eight years of regularly giving astronomy and radio-science presentations.

Abstract:Conferences are a mainstay of most scientific disciplines, where scientists of all career stages come together to share cutting-edge ideas and approaches. If you do research, chances are you will attend one or more of these meetings in your career. Conferences are a microcosm of their discipline, and while conferences offer different perspectives in different disciplines, they all offer experiences that range from a casual chat waiting in line for coffee to watching someone present their groundbreaking, hot-off-the-press research. Here, we share tips for trainees and their mentors. Our recommendations are based on our experiences of attending conferences and mentoring students to improve their conference experiences. As you head to your first scientific conference, these rules will help you navigate the conference environment and make the most of your experience.

Abstract:Tracing the literature on writing conferences during four tension points in higher-education enrollments--the 1890s, the 1930s, the 1950s, and the 1970s--the author suggests that conferences have been championed primarily at those moments when students were both more numerous and more diverse, an urge countered, however, by faculty working conditions. Looking at the present, then, he argues that the need for conferencing and the pressures that preclude extensive one-to-one work seem an amalgam of these earlier eras and continue to threaten the teaching-learning ideal that conferences represent.

Abstract:In 2020, virtual conferences became almost the only alternative to cancellation. Now that the pandemic is subsiding, the pros and cons of virtual conferences need to be reevaluated. In this report, we scrutinize the dynamics and economics of conferences and highlight the history of successful virtual meetings in industry. We also report on the attitudes of conference attendees from an informal survey we ran in spring 2022.

Abstract:Most of us agree that people are our most important resource. Yet we spend a minimal amount of time learning more about human behavior, communication, and how our attitudes and behavior impact employee performance. Instead we rely on traditional methods of negative reinforcement in an attempt to control our areas of responsibility. While these methods can render some short-term success, managers and organizations that succeed during these times of change and fierce competition will be those that take the time to understand and capture the power of a committed workforce. The committed workforce is energized, not simply compliant, as a result of having basic human needs for achievement satisfied, belonging to a group, and receiving recognition for its contributions. Committed workers typically describe the manager as one who has the ability to give them a great degree of control over their area of influence. We all know that we don't change our leadership style like we change clothes. Old habits die hard. it takes a personal commitment and lots of practice to rid outselves of habits and behavior that no longer serve our departments and facilities. This commitment, however, is crucial to survival. As managers, we must cope with increasing ambiguity and uncertainty in the workplace. To survive these challenges, we must improve our interpersonal skills and ability to successfully bring out the best in others. I believe that success will continue for managers who not only increase their knowledge and technical ability, but who also inspire their workers to move forward with a collective sense of enthusiasm and purpose.
