Abstract:To improve the hemocompatibility and antifouling property of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes, heparin-mimicking microgels of poly(acrylic acid-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (P(AA-VP)) and poly(2-acryl-amido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid-co-acrylamide) (P(AMPS-AM)) were synthesized by conventional free radical copolymerization, and then incorporated into a PES matrix by blending. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that heparin-mimicking microgels were successfully synthesized. The presence of the microgels in the membrane matrix was also confirmed by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and SEM. Compared with pristine PES membranes, the improvement of the antifouling property of the heparin-mimicking microgel modified membranes was demonstrated by the increased flux recovery ratio and improved anti-bacterial adhesion, while the enhancement of hemocompatibility for the modified membranes was proved by the decreased plasma protein adsorption, suppressed platelet adhesion, prolonged clotting times, as well as depressed blood-related complement activation. Additionally, after introducing the heparin-mimicking microgels, the membranes showed enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation properties. These results indicated that the heparin-mimicking microgel modified membranes had great potential to be used as blood contacting materials.

Abstract:Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membrane holds tremendous potential for the treatment of complex wastewater due to its outstanding chemical and thermal stability. However, its treatment efficiency is often hindered by the low water permeate flux arising from the inherent hydrophobicity of PTFE. Here, we present a gentle and convenient hydrophilic modification method that involves immersion in a nonionic surfactant aqueous solution, followed by dopamine self-polymerization. The nonionic surfactant facilitated the penetration of the dopamine solution into the membrane, where dopamine self-polymerized to form a hydrophilic layer on the surface and inner pores of the membrane. The hydrophilicity-modified PTFE hollow fiber membranes demonstrated an impressive increase in water permeate flux, reaching 10231.4 L m- 2 h-1, nearly ten times that of the original membrane. Even after prolonged exposure to a strong acid solution (pH = 1) or an oxidant solution (1000 mg L-1 NaClO) for two weeks, this membrane still maintained its favorable water permeability. Furthermore, the modified PTFE membranes also exhibited remarkable resistance to fouling by humic acid. These results showcased a straightforward method for designing a hydrophilic layer on PTFE hollow fiber membranes, underscoring their significant potential for real wastewater treatment applications.
Novel polysulfone hybrid ultrafiltration membrane prepared with TiO2-g-HEMA and its antifouling characteristics

Abstract:Hybrid membranes formed by blending TiO2 nanoparticles and organic materials are attractive for creating new materials with enhanced properties such as high permselectivity, good hydrophilicity and excellent fouling resistance in a wide range of applications. In order to overcome the agglomeration of nanoparticles in membranes and leakage of nanoparticles from nanocomposite membranes in the water treatment process and enhance the hydrophilicity of membranes, polymer chains of HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) were grown from TiO2 by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) process in methanol. The hybrid polysulfone (PSF) membranes were then prepared by adding different ratios of TiO2 (T membranes) and TiO2-g-HEMA (HT membranes) particles via phase inversion induced by the immersion precipitation technique. The modification nanoparticles were found to provide obvious improvements in reducing the particles agglomeration and fouling in sheet membranes. Different techniques such as SEM, TEM, FTIR, EDS, contact angle goniometry and filtration experiments of water, BSA and EPS were applied to characterize and explore the performance of particles and membranes. Compared with unmodified TiO2 particles, modified TiO2 particles held enhanced hydrophilicity, better compatibility and dispersibility in organic solvent and matrix polymer. Similarly, the HT membranes exhibited superior water flux and anti-pollution performance in separation than the pure PSF membrane and T membranes.
Engineering High-Effective Antifouling Polyether Sulfone Membrane with P(Peg-Pdms-Kh570)@Sio2 Nanocomposite Via In-Situ Sol-Gel Process

Abstract:In this work, an original amphiphilic copolymer P(PEG-PDMS-KH570) combined with SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) was utilized to prepare polyether sulfone (PES) nanocomposite ultrafiltration (UF) membrane with enhanced antifouling performance. The enrichment of the organic-inorganic modifier P(PEG-PDMSKH570)@SiO2 were realized at the same time as the formation of PES UF membrane via sol-gel non solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The interaction between the copolymer P(PEG-PDMSKH570) and SiO2 NPs furnished a stable and effective antifouling PES UF membrane. Surface morphology, chemical composition characterization and wetting property measurements confirmed the segregation and distribution of the nanocomposite modifier. The multi-defense mechanism from fouling resistance to fouling release of the nanocomposite membranes was investigated by setting bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution as a model foulant. The antifouling properties of the modified membranes, especially for the PES/T@SiO2 similar to 4% membrane, were effectively improved. The flux decline rate of PES/T@SiO2 similar to 4% membrane was as low as 15.6%, and the flux recover ratio was up to 99.0%. Moreover, the modified membranes also possessed remarkable antifouling stability. Results of this work provide a facile method to construct a hierarchical and heterogeneous membrane surface that could achieve the multi defense mechanism in efficient water treatment. Modified Polyethersulfone Ultrafiltration Membrane for Enhanced Antifouling Capacity and Dye Catalytic Degradation Efficiency

Abstract:Catalytic membranes, as a combination of heterogeneous advanced oxidation and membrane technology reaction systems, have important application prospects in the treatment of dyes and other organics. In practical applications, it is still challenging to construct catalytic membranes with excellent removal efficiency and fouling mitigation. Herein, molybdenum disulfide-iron oxyhydroxide (MoS2-FeOOH) was fabricated using iron oxide and MoS2 nanoflakes, which were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Furthermore, by changing the concentration of MoS2-FeOOH, the MoS2-FeOOH/polyethersulfone (PES) composite ultrafiltration membrane was obtained with improved hydrophilicity, permeability, and antifouling capacity. The pure water flux of the composite membrane reached 385.3 L/(m2·h), which was 1.7 times that of the blank PES membrane. Compared with the blank membrane, with the increase of MoS2-FeOOH content, the MoS2-FeOOH/PES composite membranes had better adsorption capacity and catalytic performance, and the membrane with 3.0% MoS2-FeOOH content (M4) could be achieved at a 60.2% methylene blue (MB) degradation rate. In addition, the membrane flux recovery ratio (FRR) of the composite membrane also increased from 25.6% of blank PES membrane (M0) to more than 70% after two cycles of bovine serum albumin (BSA) filtration and hydraulic cleaning. The membrane with 2.25% MoS2-FeOOH content (M3) had the best antifouling performance, with the largest FRR and the smallest irreversible ratio (Rir). Catalytic self-cleaning of the composite membrane M3 recovered 95% of the initial flux with 0.1 mol/L H2O2 cleaning. The MoS2-FeOOH/PES composite membranes with the functions of excellent rejection and antifouling capacity have a good prospect in the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater composed of soluble dyes.

Abstract:Anti-fouling and anti-bacterial polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were developed by the addition of poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) grafted silica nanoparticles (SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs) and further post-quaternization. The SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs were first synthesized by grafting PDMAEMA brushes from SiO2 NPs via surface-initiated, reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. PES/SiO2-g-PDMAEMA hybrid ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were then prepared from the blending solutions of PES and SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The PDMAEMA chains incorporated into the PES membranes were further quaternized by reacting with 1,3-propane sultone (1,3-PS) and methyl iodide (CH3I), respectively. After treatment with 1,3-PS, the resulting zwitterionic PES membranes exhibited excellent hydrophilicity, water permeability, solute rejection and protein anti-fouling properties. The cationic membranes obtained from CH3I treatment showed strong anti-bacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphyloccocus aureus Rosenbach (S. aureus). This work presents a convenient strategy for anti-biofouling modification of polymer membranes via surface quaternization of the reactive SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs additive.
Enhancing Water Purification by Integrating Titanium Dioxide Nanotubes into Polyethersulfone Membranes for Improved Hydrophilicity and Anti-Fouling Performance

Abstract:Water pollution remains a critical concern, one necessitated by rapidly increasing industrialization and urbanization. Among the various strategies for water purification, membrane technology stands out, with polyethersulfone (PES) often being the material of choice due to its robust mechanical properties, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. However, PES-based membranes tend to exhibit low hydrophilicity, leading to reduced flux and poor anti-fouling performance. This study addresses these limitations by incorporating titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO2NTs) into PES nanofiltration membranes to enhance their hydrophilic properties. The TiO2NTs, characterized through FTIR, XRD, BET, and SEM, were embedded in PES at varying concentrations using a non-solvent induced phase inversion (NIPS) method. The fabricated mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were subjected to testing for water permeability and solute rejection capabilities. Remarkably, membranes with a 1 wt.% TiO2NT loading displayed a significant increase in pure water flux, from 36 to 72 L m2 h−1 bar−1, a 300-fold increase in selectivity compared to the pristine sample, and a dye rejection of 99%. Furthermore, long-term stability tests showed only a slight reduction in permeate flux over a time of 36 h, while dye removal efficiency was maintained, thus confirming the membrane's stability. Anti-fouling tests revealed a 93% flux recovery ratio, indicating excellent resistance to fouling. These results suggest that the inclusion of TiO2 NTs offers a promising avenue for the development of efficient and stable anti-fouling PES-based membranes for water purification.

Abstract:In this study, a novel amphiphilic comb copolymer P(poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-r-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)) with mixed hydrophilic and low surface energy side chains was synthesized by the free radical polymerization method. The microstructure of the synthesized amphiphilic copolymers was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and the nuclear magnetic resonance proton spectra (H-1 NMR). The copolymers were blended with poly(ether sulfone) (PES) to fabricate low-fouling ultrafiltration membranes through nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS). The surface distribution of the hydrophilic PEG segments and hydrophobic PDMS segments on the membranes via surface segregation during the NIPS process was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the wetting property, and the surface energy measurements. The multidefense mechanisms from fouling resistant to fouling release for the membranes modified by amphiphilic copolymers P(PEG-r-PDMS) were investigated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution as a model foulant. The antifouling properties of the modified membrane, especially for membrane PES/P(PEG-r-PDMS)similar to 31.3% (M-4), was effectively improved in comparation with pure PES membrane (M-0). The flux decline rate of the membrane M-4 was as low as 15.6%, and the flux recover ratio was up to 96.6%. The modified membrane also possessed stable and durable antifouling properties after three cycles of BSA filtration and chemical washing. It is promising that the present study can offer an effective approach to construct a low fouling membrane in the application of wastewater treatment and water purification.
Enhancing the Antifouling and Antimicrobial Properties of Poly(ether sulfone) Membranes by Surface Quaternization from a Reactive Poly(ether sulfone) Based Copolymer Additive

Abstract:A facile and practical method for fabricating antifouling and antimicrobial poly(ether sulfone) (PES) membranes is developed in this work. A PES blend membrane was first fabricated by a traditional nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process with a reactive amphiphilic copolymer poly(ether sulfone)-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA-b-PES-b-PDMAEMA) as the blending additive. The hydrophilic PDMAEMA chains in the copolymer additive spontaneously migrated toward the interfaces between membrane and coagulant bath (usually water) during membrane formation. The enriched PDMAEMA chains on the as-made blend membranes were then quaternized by reacting with 1,3-propane sultone (1,3-PS) and 1-bromodecane, respectively. The zwitterionic PES membranes obtained from 1,3-PS treatment showed significantly improved antifouling ability and hemocompatibility. In another case, the resulting cationic PES membranes treated with 1-bromodecane exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphyloccocus aureus (S. aureus). The surface quaternization from the reactive polymeric additive provides a facile and versatile strategy for further functionalization of phase inversion membranes. This method is also suitable for other membrane materials. Moreover, it is easy to scale up in industrial applications.
Fabrication of novel polyethersulfone (PES) photocatalytic membranes with excellent permeability and antifouling properties using TiO2–AgBr–Ag–SBA-15 nanofillers for cefixime removal

Abstract:This study aimed to enhance the permeability and antifouling properties of the polymer membrane of polyethersulfone (PES) through the modification with TiO 2 –AgBr–Ag–SBA-15. The hydrothermal process is used to create silica nanoparticles (SBA-15), which involved the use of tetraethylorthosilicate as a precursor and a copolymer Pluronic P123 (as a mold and the structure maintainer after solvent exiting). Then, SBA-15 nanoparticles are added to the preparation solution of TiO 2 –AgBr–Ag, resulting doping nanoparticles (TiO 2 –AgBr–Ag–SBA-15) were incorporated into the casting solution to achieve weight percentages of 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1 in the final membranes. The nanoparticles were characterized using FESEM, FT-IR, XRD, XPS and EDX. Meanwhile, the membrane properties were studied using FESEM, FT-IR, CA, AFM and membrane performance tests. The hybrid membranes exhibited a less hydrophobic surface, which consequently resulted in water permeability. Moreover, the antifouling properties were notably improved, resulting in a considerable improvement in permeability without compromising the membrane's ability to remove unwanted substances. At 3.5 bar pressure, the pure water flux of the 0.8 wt% PES/TiO 2 –AgBr–Ag–SBA-15 membrane was two times higher than that of the pristine membrane. Flux recovery rate of 1 wt% PES/TiO 2 –AgBr–Ag–SBA-15 membrane can reach 90%, and the antifouling performance is excellent.

Preparation of Nano-TiO2-Modified PVDF Membranes with Enhanced Antifouling Behaviors via Phase Inversion: Implications of Nanoparticle Dispersion Status in Casting Solutions

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have been applied in membrane antifouling performance modification for years. However, the influence of TiO2 nanoparticle dispersion status during the blending process on membrane properties and the inner mechanism has seldom been focused on. Herein, we investigated the influence of the various dispersing statuses of TiO2 nanoparticles on membrane properties and antifouling performance by exploring various blending processes without changing the original recipe. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was employed as a pore-forming agent during the membrane preparation process, and also as a pre-dispersing agent for the TiO2 nanoparticles via the steric hindrance effect. Compared to the original preparation process of the PVDF/TiO2 composite membrane, the pre-dispersing of TiO2 via PEG ensured a modified membrane with uniform surface pores and structures on cross-sectional morphologies, larger porosity and water permeability, and more negative zeta potential. The contact angle was decreased by 6.0%, implying better hydrophilicity. The improved antifouling performance was corroborated by the increasing free energy of cohesion and adhesion, the interaction energy barrier (0.43 KT) between the membrane surfaces and approaching foulants assessed by classic XDLVO theory and the low flux decline in the filtration experiment. A kinetics mechanism analysis of the casting solutions, which found a low TSI value (<1.0), substantiated that the pre-dispersion of TiO2 with PEG contributed to the high stability and ultimately favorable antifouling behaviors. This study provides an optimized approach to the preparation of excellent nano-TiO2/polymeric composite membranes applied in the municipal sewage treatment field.

Abstract:In the current work, a novel nanocomposite membrane for wastewater treatment applications has been synthesized. A hydrophilic nature nanoadditive comprised grafting polyethylenimine (PEI) molecules onto the surfaces of silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) was synthesized then entrapped within a polyethersulfone polymeric matrix at disparate ratios via the classical phase inversion technique. A series of experimental tools were employed to probe the influence of SiO2-PEI on the surface topography and morphological changes, hydrophilicity, porosity, surface chemistry as well as permeation and dyes retention characteristics of the new nanocomposite. Upon increasing the nanoadditives content (up to 0.7 wt. % SiO2- PEI), clear cross-sectional changes were depicted along with a noticeable decline in the water contact angle by 29.7%. Performance evaluation measurements against synthetic dye solutions were disclosed explicit enhancement in both; retention and permeation characteristics of the nanocomposite membranes. Besides, prolonged permeation test has maintained high flux stability against real textile wastewater; implying better resistance and self-cleaning characteristics have been achieved.

Effects of a dual functional filler, polyethersulfone-g-carboxymethyl chitosan@MWCNT, for enhanced antifouling and penetration performance of PES composite membranes

Abstract:Ultrafiltration technology, separating water from impurities by the core membrane, is an effective strategy for treating wastewater to meet the ever-growing requirement of clean and drinking water. However, the similar nature of hydrophobic organic pollutants and the membrane surface leads to severe adsorption and aggregation, resulting unavoidable membrane degradation of penetration and rejection. The present study presents a novel block amphiphilic polymer, polyethersulfone-g-carboxymethyl chitosan@MWCNT (PES-g-CMC@MWCNT), which is synthesized by grafting hydrophobic polyethersulfone to hydrophilic carboxymethyl chitosan in order to suspend CMC in organic solution. A mixture of hydrophilic carboxymethyl chitosan and hydrophobic polymers (polyethersulfone), in which hydrophilic segments are bonded to hydrophobic segments, could provide hydrophilic groups, as well as gather and remain stable on membrane surfaces by their hydrophobic interaction for improved compatibility and durability. The resultant ultrafiltration membranes exhibit high water flux (198.10 L m-2·h-1), suitable hydrophilicity (64.77°), enhanced antifouling property (82.96%), while still maintains excellent rejection of bovine serum albumin (91.75%). There has also been an improvement in membrane cross-sectional morphology, resulting in more regular pores size (47.64 nm) and higher porosity (84.60%). These results indicate that amphiphilic polymer may be able to significantly promote antifouling and permeability of ultrafiltration membranes.

Abstract:TiO2 nanoparticles have attracted much attention in the surface modification of polymer membranes for antifouling purpose due to their excellent hydrophilicity. In this work, a polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) intermediate layer was fabricated on the polypropylene microfiltration membrane via a co-deposition method and then TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were modified on the membrane surfaces through a sol–gel process. TiO2-modified membranes with various Ti/C ratios were prepared and their surface structures and properties are compared with those of the nascent and PDA/PEI-deposited ones. Results indicate that the TiO2 NPs modification increases both the surface wettability and the water permeation flux of the membranes remarkably. TiO2 NPs also endow the membranes with promoted protein resistance properties. The relative flux reduction and flux recovery ratio are 31±3% and 82±5% for bovine serum albumin solution, while 26±4% and 86±3% for lysozyme solution. The TiO2 NPs are also stable on the membrane surfaces under a wide range of pH value.
Morphology and characteristics of polyethersulfone membrane modified with polyethylene glycol hexadecyl ether and nanocarbon

Abstract:The development of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes to improve membrane performance can be done in various ways; one is by combining two types of additives (organic and inorganic) in one dope polymer solution. In this study, researchers analyzed the effect of combining polyethylene glycol hexadecyl ether (PEG-HE) as an organic additive and nanocarbon as an inorganic additive on the characteristics and performance of PES membranes. The membrane performance test includes analysis of pure water flux and rejection of synthetic fertilizer factory wastewater (Mg2+) with a concentration of 300 ppm. The membrane characterization was carried out by analyzing the morphology of the membrane structure using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), water contact angle (WCA), porosity, and membrane pore size. Ultrafiltration experiment showed that the modified PES membrane with PEG-HE and Nanocarbon had the highest pure water flux. The most significant rejection coefficient of 96.88% was found in an ultrafiltration experiment using pure PES membranes. The characteristic of other membranes will be described in detail in this article.
Polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes co‐blended with amphiphilic polymers and nitrogen‐doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles for anti‐fouling and photocatalysis

Abstract:N‐TiO2@M3 resulted in a water contact angle of 43.5°, After 120 min, the ultraviolet light (UV) photocatalytic efficiency of N‐TiO2@M3 for methyl bromide reached 95.3%, and the catalytic effect was also good under visible light. The irreversible contamination rate of N‐TiO2@M4 after 1 h of UV light cleaning was 5.7%, and the irreversible contamination rate after 1 h of visible light irradiation was 6.7%. Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes have a high tendency to scale due to their inherent hydrophobicity, which limits their application and increases water treatment costs. To regulate the size of the pores of PES and prevent clogging, different qualities of poly(ethylene glycol)38‐block‐poly(propylene glycol)8 (PEG‐PPG) were introduced and screened for the best ratios. Further introduced synthesized nitrogen‐doped titanium dioxide (N‐TiO2), anti‐fouling and photocatalytic PES ultrafiltration membranes (N‐TiO2@M) were prepared. N‐TiO2@M3 exhibited bovine serum albumin rejection rate of 93.8% and achieved a methylene blue photocatalytic efficiency of 95.3% after 120 min of operation. Furthermore, N‐TiO2@M4 showcased a water contact angle of 41.0°. Notably, the pure water flux of N‐TiO2@M4 surged by 499.3% compared to that of PES membrane. The fouling resistance ratio for membrane flux witnessed an increase from 70.0% to 82.7%, demonstrating the enhanced durability of N‐TiO2@M4. Moreover, the comprehensive analysis for N‐TiO2@M4 revealed a total contamination rate of 40.2%. The irreversible contamination rate of N‐TiO2@M4 after 1 h of ultraviolet light (UV) cleaning was 5.7%, and the irreversible contamination rate after 1 h of visible light irradiation was 6.7%. The method for mixing N‐TiO2 and PEG‐PPG is straightforward and convenient, offering potential for the development of N‐TiO2@M with resistance to pollution and degradation in visible/UV light.

Bandgap tuning of TiO2 by Cu nanoparticles applied in photocatalytic antifouling-coated PES membranes through PAA-plasma grafted adhesive layer

Abstract:This study developed an antifouling coating for polyethersulfone (PES) membranes by tuning the bandgap of TiO2 with Cu nanoparticles (NPs) via a polyacrylic acid (PAA)-plasma-grafted intermediate layer. Cu NPs were synthesized at different molar ratios and precipitated onto TiO2 using the sol-gel method. The resulting Cu@TiO2 photocatalysts were characterized using various techniques, showing reduced bandgap, particle size range of 100-200 nm, and generation of reactive free radicals under light irradiation. The 25% Cu@TiO2 photocatalyst displayed the highest catalytic efficiency for Acid Blue 260 (AB260) degradation, achieving 73% and 96% with and without H2O2, respectively. Photocatalytic membranes based on this catalyst achieved an AB260 degradation efficiency of 91% and remained stable over five cycles. Additionally, sodium alginate-fouled photocatalytic membranes fully recovered water permeability after undergoing photocatalytic degradation of foulants. The modified membrane displayed a higher surface roughness due to the presence of photocatalyst particles. This study demonstrates the potential application of Cu@TiO2/PAA/PES photocatalytic membranes for mitigating membrane fouling in practice.
Polyethersulfone mixed matrix membranes modified with pore formers and Ag-titanate nanotubes: physicochemical characteristics and (bio)fouling study

Abstract:In the presented studies it was hypothesized that the modification of a polymeric membrane with a pore former and a hybrid nanomaterial composed of titanate nanotubes with deposited Ag nanoparticles (Ag-TNTs NPs) can protect the membrane from the microbial growth, and thus enhance its resistance to biofouling. Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were prepared by the wet phase inversion, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were used as pore formers. The membranes were characterized in terms of morphology, topography, permeability, separation characteristics, and anti-(bio)fouling properties as well as antibacterial activity. The membranes modified with porogens and Ag-TNTs revealed improved hydrophilicity and water permeability compared to the unmodified membrane, from 58 to 66%. Moreover, the improvement in rejection of model dextrans and PEG upon application of the NPs was found. However, the use of PVP or PEG had a negative influence on the resistance to fouling by bovine serum albumin, i.e., ca. 35% of decline of permeate flux was noticed after 2 h of ultrafiltration of BSA. On the contrary, both porogens and NPs contributed to biofouling mitigation. The introduction of pore formers had a positive effect on the inhibition of Escherichia coli growth by the membrane containing Ag-TNTs. The log reduction of bacteria varied from 3.17 to 3.3 in case of stirred and filtration system.

Abstract:The in-situ embedment approach was adopted to surface-modify polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes using TiO2 nanoparticles.The coverage ratio of nanoparticles on membranes surface was changed by varying the pH and TiO2 nanoparticle concentration in the water (coagulation) bath.The membranes were characterized and evaluated by scanning electron microscope observation,contact angle measurement and conducting anti-biofouling test using P.aeruginosa.The results show that the well-dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles in the water bath of pH 4 were successfully embedded onto the membrane surface with the coverage ratio being variable.A membrane was more hydrophilic when the TiO2 coverage ratio was higher.Compared with the unmodified membrane,the modified membrane had a similar filterability and a higher anti-biofouling ability.The anti-biofouling ability was dependent on the TiO2 coverage ratio.The best anti-biofouling performance was achieved when the coverage ratio was between 22.4％ and 27.7％,for which the P.aeruginosa adhesion (after 12-hour cultivation) reduced by 90％ and the biofilm thickness (after 24-hour cultivation) decreased by 70％.

Abstract:Polysulfone-based amphiphilic polymer polysulfone-graft-poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PSf-g-POEM) was synthesized and used to blend with polyethersulfone (PES) to tune the hydrophobicity and fouling-liable properties of PES membranes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted to characterize the properties of blend membranes. DSC results showed that the blend samples were characterized with single T-g transition, indicating that the additives were compatible well with PES in membranes. Membranes hydrophilicity was evaluated by contact angle measurement and obviously enhanced wettability of blend membranes was found. XPS analysis suggested that poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (POEM) brushes from amphiphilic additives occupied half part of the membrane surface composition, and the high content of POEM in surface had effectively improved the membranes hydrophilicity as well as the fouling-resistance to proteins. Meanwhile, the formation of cake layer was explored as a main reason for membrane fouling behavior, while the irreversible filtration resistance (R-tr) could be greatly reduced by incorporation of the synthesized amphiphilic additives.
