Abstract:Aluminum alloys are widely used in engineering applications and easily deposited using the wire AM process, but controlling porosity and surface hardness remains challenging. The authors have addressed the porosity in their earlier works, deposited by arc length correction (ALC) ± 5% as a process parameter. The present work is focused extensively on wear characteristics of as-deposited samples. The wear tests were done on samples built in both horizontal directions (HD) and vertical directions (VD) at loads of 10-20N and disk speeds of 500-600 rpm (i.e., sliding velocity of 1.05-1.26 m/s) using pin-on-disk equipment. The highest coefficient of friction (CoF) is approx. 0.65 which was noted at 10N applied loads, disk speed 500 rpm, and ALC0%. The lowest CoF is 0.33 at a disk speed of 600 rpm, used loads of 20N, and ALC-5%. The highest wear rate (W r ) of 20.1 × 10 −4 mm 3 /m was noted at 20N and 600 rpm for the ALC + 5% sample. At the same time, the lowest W r of 4.053 × 10 −4 mm 3 /m was noted at 10N and 500 rpm for the ALC-5% sample. For maximum load and speed conditions, the hardness of the worn surface was 54.5 HV 0.1 in HD and 65.8 HV 0.1 in VD, representing an increase of 21%.
