Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is an attractive anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but its applications have been significantly hampered by the huge volume change during the electrochemical cycling. In this work we demonstrate a rational design of crystalline SnO2@amorphous TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, where the crystalline SnO2 core was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and the amorphous TiO2 shell was deposited by atomic layer deposition. The SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures deliver excellent performances during the electrochemical process, having a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at cycling rate of 80 mA g(-1), which is still up to 703 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. The acceptable rate capacity is also revealed with 412 mAh g(-1) at 400mA g(-1). The coulombic efficiency is stable at around 100% regardless of cycling rates and numbers. The electrochemical performances of the SnO2@TiO2 batteries are better than those of the SnO2 ones without TiO2 coating. In the SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures, the amorphous TiO2 shell layer can experience an isotropic stress, having the ability to evidently reduce the volume change, lattice stress and so the risk of fracture during the cycling process, which is responsible for their outstanding behaviors. Abstract:In this study, the nano-sized ZnO/Bi2O3 composites were synthesized with the zinc-bismuth bimetallic-MOFs as the precursor for the first time. The metal ions were homogeneously anchored on the self-assembled precursor with a structure of hollow sphere. The results showed that the obtained ZnO presented a typical structure of hexagonal prismatic and an even distribution of element Zn and Bi was realized. Utilized as anode materials of Zn/Ni battery, the composites displays an ultra-high average discharge capacity of 630 mAh g−1 at 1 C and longer cycle life than the unmodified pure ZnO.

Abstract:As candidates of the next generation batteries, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have drawn widespread attention owing to the advantages of environmental friendliness, low cost and ultrahigh theoretical capacity. In order to obtain superior zinc ions (Zn2+) storage ability, the cathode materials with eminent electrochemical property are placed great expectations. Herein, the hierarchical 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx microsphere is prepared by a simple spray drying process. In the heterostructure, the amorphous V2O5 not only endows abundant active sites for Zn2+ storage but also effectively alleviates Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets restacking. Meanwhile, the presence of conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene framework significantly enhances the conductivity and reaction kinetics of the electrode material. As a result, the 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx exhibits an impressive Zn2+ storage ability, including the high reversible capacity (604 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1), the superior rate performance and the splendid cycling stability. Furthermore, the relevant mechanism is illustrated via various characterizations. Moreover, the as-fabricated pouch ZIBs based on the 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx displays a potential practical application prospect as flexible energy storage devices. Hence, this work may provide an inspiration for the rational design of high performance ZIBs cathode materials.

Driving the Interfacial Ion-Transfer Kinetics by Mesoporous TiO 2 Spheres for High-Performance Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been considered as a promising energy storage device. However, the ion transfer at the Zn metal anode–electrolyte interface is limited by the sluggish kinetics resulting in high interface resistance. Herein, mesoporous TiO2 (m-TiO2) is coated on the Zn foil (Zn-TiO2) driving the ion's faster transfer to reduce interface resistance (70.1 Ω vs 799.3 Ω of bare Zn). The lower interface resistance is ascribed to shortening the ion transfer path provided by the mesoporous structure and the smaller Zn2+ absorption energy barrier of the surface of the Zn-TiO2 anode as well as the unobstructed ion transfer path at the crystal planes (100) of TiO2, which have been supported by the density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experiments. Therefore, the Zn-TiO2 anodes in the symmetrical cells display a low voltage hysteresis (36.5 mV) and long-term cycling stability (500 h at 4.4 mA cm–2). Especially, the Zn-TiO2/MnO2 full cells show superior cycling performance with a high capacity of 269.8 mAh g–1 after 50 cycles at 0.2 A g–1 and 210.9 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g–1. Abstract:Nitridated mesoporous Li4Ti5O12 spheres were synthesized by a simple ammonia treatment of Li4Ti5O12 derived from mesoporous TiO2 particles and lithium acetate dihydrate via a solid state reaction in the presence of polyethylene glycol 20000. The carbonization of polyethylene glycol could effectively restrict the growth of primary particles, which was favorable for lithium ions diffusing into the nanosized TiO2 lattice during the solid state reaction to form a pure phase Li4Ti5O12. After a subsequent thermal nitridation treatment, a high conductive thin TiO x N y layer was in situ constructed on the surface of the primary nanoparticles. As a result, the nitridated mesoporous Li4Ti5O12 structure, possessing shorter lithium-ion diffusion path and better electrical conductivity, displays significantly improved rate capability. The discharge capacity reaches 138 mAh g−1 at 10 C rate and 120 mAh g−1 at 20 C rate in the voltage range of 1–3 V.

Abstract:Well-defined mesoporous TiNb6O17 microspheres are synthesized through a facile solvothermal method in isopropanol followed by a thermal treatment. The mesoporous TiNb6O17 microspheres are monodisperse with uniform morphology and are assembled by interconnected nanocrystals. The hierarchical mesoporous structure of the TiNb6O17 microspheres not only supplies a large electrode/electrolyte interfacial area but also reduces the diffusion distance of Li+, such that the TiNb6O17 microspheres have excellent electrochemical properties, especially a good rate performance. As the rate is increased from 1 to 5, 10, 20, and 30 C, the discharge capacity of the TiNb6O17 microspheres is slowly reduced from 273.7 to 239.5, 228.2, 216.0, and 175.3mAh g(-1), respectively. The good rate performance is mainly caused by the pseudocapacitive effect. These mesoporous TiNb6O17 microspheres are promising anode materials for producing lithium-ion battery with excellent rate capacity and good safety. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
High Stability Hypha-Like Core-Shell Nanostructure by In Situ Induced Phase Inversion for Zinc Metal Batteries

Abstract:Nanomaterials are widely used in many fields for their unique physical and chemical properties and especially demonstrate irreplaceability in energy storage systems. In this paper, a novel composite of copper sulfide with hypha-like core-shell nano-structure is synthesized by in situ phase inversion method, which serves as high stability negative electrode materials of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). The unique structure facilitates efficient electron and ion transport, enhances the kinetics of electrochemical reactions, and effectively suppresses the undesired expansion and decomposition of transition metal compounds. As a result, the half battery exhibits high specific capacity (250.2 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), reliable rate performance, and cycle stability (98.3 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 500 cycles). Additionally, when assembled with ZnxMnO2 positive to form a full battery, it demonstrates good cycling capacity at an intermediate current density of 2 A g-1, while maintaining excellent structural stability over 5,000 cycles (61% retention).

Abstract:Zn–Ni battery is prospective green energy storage device. However, Zn(OH)4 2–, the dissolved product of ZnO in the electrolyte, redistributes during the cycle, leading to the shape changing of the anode. This issue severely limits the lifespan of zinc anodes. Despite the success in improving the electrochemical performances of zinc anode via adding Ti4O7 additive, the important mechanism of such modified anode has not been well understood. In addition, the aluminothermic reduction is facile and energy-saving. But the application of Ti4O7 synthesized by this method in Zn–Ni batteries has not been studied. Herein, Ti4O7 synthesized by facile and rapid aluminothermic reduction was applied to alkaline zinc anode. In subsequent electrochemical tests, the discharge capacity and cyclic performance of the zinc-nickel battery was significantly improved by adding as-prepared Ti4O7 particles. At a high discharge current of 2.5 A (34.54 mA cm−2), the anode modified by Ti4O7 delivered higher discharge capacity of 364 mAh g−1, in contrast to the 283 mAh g−1 of pristine anode. Even at ultra-high discharge current of 10 A (138.16 mA cm−2), the battery operated stably for 480 cycles. Besides, the mechanism of Ti4O7 modifying anode was studied in-depth by a variety of characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We discovered that Ti4O7 simultaneously regulates the distribution of electrons on the anode and Zn(OH)4 2– in the electrolyte, contributing to forming uniform zinc anode during cycling.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted a continually increasing level of interest for large-scale energy storage because they are highly safe and have high energy density and abundant reserves. However, Zn anodes face significant challenges such as severe dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We here propose an efficient Zn2+ sieve strategy for modulating the anode chemistry using two-dimensional NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets. Theoretical investigations reveal the crucial role of the Ti MOF in regulating Zn2+ solvation structures for fast diffusion and uniform deposition and decreasing HER reactivity. The structure of the nanosheets enables abundant accessible desolvation sites and shortened ionic pathways. As a result, the MOF nanosheet-protected Zn anode exhibited greatly improved cycling stability in both symmetric cells and full cells. Operando optical monitoring and postmortem analysis revealed effective suppression of dendrite growth and HER by Ti MOF nanosheets. This anti-HER MOF-enabled Zn2+ sieve strategy provides a viable Zn anode and provides new insights for optimizing aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc (Zn)-ion batteries are regarded as highly prospective candidates for next-generation renewable and safe energy storage systems. However, the uncontrolled dendrite growth of the Zn anode impedes their practical application. Here, a scalable and controllable approach is developed for converting commercial titanium (Ti) foil to 3D porous Ti, which retains good resistance to corrosion, high electrical conductivity, and excellent mechanical properties. Benefiting from a spontaneous ultrathin zincophilic titanium dioxide (TiO2) interfacial layer and continuous 3D structure, the 3D porous Ti can act as an effective host to achieve a 3D Ti/Zn metal anode. By ensuring homogeneous nucleation, uniform current distribution, and volume change accommodation, the dendritic growth of 3D Ti/Zn metal anode is effectively inhibited with stable Zn plating/stripping up to 2000 h with low polarization. When conjugated with a 3D sulfur-doped Ti3C2Tx 2 nanotube cathode, a high rate and stable Zn cell is achieved with 95.46% capacity retention after 500 cycles at a high rate of 5 A g–1. Abstract:This study introduces a novel TiO2‐based cathode material for aqueous zinc‐ion batteries, demonstrating an interface‐dominated storage mechanism. This mechanism holds significant potential for application across diverse composite systems, thereby broadening the scope for cathode material development. Furthermore, the TiO2‐based material may also serve as a stable anode protective layer, facilitating the construction of uniform zinc deposition anodes. Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) are highly desirable for large‐scale energy storage applications, yet the lack of suitable cathode materials hinders their deployment. Here, for the first time, a new and promising TiO2‐based cathode material (TOC‐AI) is reported for AZIBs and unveil a novel energy storage mechanism that enables Zn2+ storage predominantly originating from the interface. The TOC‐AI composed of ultrafine TiO2 nanocrystals embedded within an amorphous carbon matrix, featuring abundant atomic interfaces and strong interactions, triggers a decoupled and rapid transport of Zn2+ ions and electrons in the interfacial space charge region, similar to an electrostatic capacitor. Moreover, the presence of titanium vacancies facilitates Zn2+ intercalation into the TiO2 bulks, contributing extra capacity to the composite. Finally, a high capacity of 111 mAh g−1 and excellent cycling performance with 77% capacity retention after 17 000 cycles are achieved. Such interface‐dominated storage mechanism has also been successfully extended to other composite systems, broadening the scope of potential applications for materials traditionally deemed inactive for Zn2+ storage.

Herein, an organic component-Cu metal composite layer is constructed on Zn anode (Org-Cu@Zn) by a novel, one-step and in situ spontaneous displacement reaction. The outer porous organic layer with functional groups may serve as migration sites and transport channels for Zn2+ ions, promoting transfer kinetics. The inner zincophilic Cu clusters layer diminishes the interfacial resistance, facilitating Zn2+ ions diffusion and even Zn deposition. Compared to the bare Zn, the unique dual-layer structure exhibits stronger zincophilicity, smaller interface resistance, lower nucleation energy barrier, and stronger anti-corrosion capability, thus effectively suppressing the Zn dendrite growth and side reactions. Remarkably, the Org-Cu@Zn electrode shows an ultra-long lifespan of 3600 h (1800 cycles) with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.7 %, realizes long cycling stability over 4300 h (1 mA cm-2) and 1350 h (5 mA cm-2), and assures the stable operation of Org-Cu@Zn||ZVO full cells with cointype configurations.

Abstract:The practical applications of alkaline zinc‐based batteries are challenged by the poor rechargeability with insufficient zinc utilization ratio. Herein, we report a sphere‐confined reversible zinc deposition behaviour from a free‐standing Zn anode, which is composed of bi‐continuous ZnO‐protected interconnected and hollowed Zn microspheres by Kirkendall effect. The cross‐linked Zn network with in‐situ formed outer ZnO shell and inner hollow space not only inhibits side reactions but also ensures long‐range conductivity and accommodates shape change, which induces preferential reversible zinc dissolution‐deposition process in the inner space and maintains structural integrity even under high zinc utilization ratio. As a result, the Zn electrode can be stably cycled for 390 h at a high current density of 20 mA cm−2 (60% depth of discharge), outperforming previously reported alkaline Zn anodes. A stable zinc‐nickel oxide hydroxide battery with a high cumulative capacity of 8532 mAh cm−2 at 60% depth of discharge is also demonstrated. This article is protected by copyright. Mesoporous Ti2Nb10O29 microspheres constructed by interconnected nanoparticles as high performance anode material for lithium ion batteries

Abstract:Mesoporous Ti2Nb10O29 microspheres are prepared through a solvothermal method in isopropanol-glycerol solvent followed by calcination treatment. The Ti2Nb10O29 microspheres with diameter in the range between 1.0 and 2.0 µm are assembled from nanoparticles. The special hierarchical mesoporous structure of Ti2Nb10O29 microspheres can reduce the Li+ ions diffusion distance and supply large interfacial area between electrolyte and electrode, endowing them with better electrochemical properties compared to Ti2Nb10O29 nanoparticles. At different current densities of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 C, the first discharge capacity of mesoporous microspheres is respectively 268.9, 218.5, 205.3, 180.5, and 158.1 mA h g−1. By contrast, the corresponding values of Ti2Nb10O29 nanoparticles are quickly reduced from 254.6, 196.3, 159.4, 127.5, to 99.0 mA h g−1. It worth noting that Ti2Nb10O29 microspheres exhibit excellent rate capacities. Furthermore, at a current density of 10 C, the specific capacity of Ti2Nb10O29 microspheres can be maintained at 173.5 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles, with 86.8% retention of the first discharge capacity. These results suggest that the Ti2Nb10O29 mesoporous microspheres would be developed as potential anodic materials for high performance lithium-ion batteries.
