Abstract:With the depletion of fossil energy and increasingly serious environmental pollution, the development of renewable sources of energy is imminent. Exploration of high-efficiency energy storage and transformation materials has become the focus in the field of energy research. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a kind of porous and crystalline polymer, have attracted extensive attention. In this work, we developed a composite material (Al2O3-G-COFSO3) using COFs and alumina, which can serve as an efficient separator in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In the composite, alumina can improve the transport ability of Li+ and thus improve conductivity and SO3-COF can effectively restrain the shuttle of polysulfides by electrostatic repulsion. At a current density of 0.05C, the composite-based battery exhibited a high capacity of 1404 mAh g-1, which ranks as one of the highest values among all of the COF-based Li-S batteries. Even at a discharge rate of 1C, it can also achieve a high experimental capacity of 999 mAh g-1 with a low decay rate of 0.061% over 500 cycles. Moreover, the battery also showed a high electrochemical stability and long-term performance stability.

Abstract:The electrode materials with hollow structure and/or graphene coating are expected to exhibit outstanding electrochemical performances in energy-storage systems. 2D graphene-wrapped hollow C/Fe3 O4 microspheres are rationally designed and fabricated by a novel facile and scalable strategy. The core@double-shell structure SPS@FeOOH@GO (SPS: sulfonated polystyrene, GO: graphene oxide) microspheres are first prepared through a simple one-pot approach and then transformed into C/Fe3 O4 @G (G: graphene) after calcination at 500 °C in Ar. During calcination, the Kirkendall effect resulting from the diffusion/reaction of SPS-derived carbon and FeOOH leads to the formation of hollow structure carbon with Fe3 O4 nanoparticles embedded in it. In the rationally constructed architecture of C/Fe3 O4 @G, the strongly coupled C/Fe3 O4 hollow microspheres are further anchored onto 2D graphene networks, achieving a strong synergetic effect between carbon, Fe3 O4 , and graphene. As an anode material of Li-ion batteries (LIBs), C/Fe3 O4 @G manifests a high reversible capacity, excellent rate behavior, and outstanding long-term cycling performance (1208 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 100 mA g(-1) ).

Abstract:In this study, we report that the NiFe2O4/C hollow spheres composed of mesoporous nanospheres have been fabricated through hydrothermal method, calcination treatment and subsequently carbon-coated process. The obtained composite possesses a high surface area (236.44m2g−1) and mesopores (2.3nm), which can efficiently increase the contact area for electrode/electrolyte and buffer the volume change during electrochemical cycling. Combining with the synergistic effect of NiO, Fe2O3 and carbon, the NiFe2O4/C electrode displays superior electrochemical properties in terms of high reversible capacity, good cycle stability, and excellent rate performance. A specific capacity as high as 1266mAhg−1 can be obtained after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.2Ag−1. Even at high current rate of 10Ag−1, the reversible capacity still remains at 633.3mAhg−1 after 250 cycles. Therefore, the mesoporous NiFe2O4/C electrode material may be a promising anode in lithium-ion battery applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a versatile facile route to synthesize mesoporous hollow-structured metal oxides is demonstrated using sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres as hard templates. SEM and TEM images show that the Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO hollow microspheres are self-assembled by nanorods, nanoparticles and nanosheets, respectively. Hollow and mesoporous structures not only provide enhanced mechanical stabilities to buffer the large volume changes during the charge/discharge processes, but also provide large specific areas for sufficient penetration of electrolyte, thus leading to an excellent cyclic stability and rate capability. As proofs-of-concepts, all of the hollow and mesoporous metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO) deliver high initial discharge capacities and good capacity retentions (>80%) after more than 100 cycles in half cells. Most important of all, these assembled full-cells (MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2) also delivere excellent electrochemical performances. This work clearly demonstrates that the MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2 configuration are promising alternative high power-density energy storage devices in the near future.
Multicore-Shell Iron Fluoride @ Carbon Microspheres as Long-life Cathode for High-Energy Lithium Battery

Abstract:The study of multi-electron conversion cathodes is an important direction for developing next-generation rechargeable batteries. Iron fluoride (FeF3), in particular, has a high theoretical specific capacity (712 mAh g-1) and a low cost for Li storage. However, the FeF3 material suffers from poor conductivity, volume change and active material dissolution, resulting in voltage hysteresis, poor cycling and rate performance during electrochemical reactions. Here novel multicore-shell FeF3@Carbon (C) composite microspheres with FeF3 nanoparticles embedded in carbon shells are developed through a bottom-up method and demonstrate smaller FeF3 particle size, a good carbon coating and superior maintenance of carbon shell integrity after fluorination and cycling as well. The FeF3@C/Li cells exhibit excellent electrochemical properties, offering a reversible capacity of 511.4 mAh g-1 at 0.2C after 250 cycles and outstanding cycle stability within 3500 cycles, with a capacity retention of 81% at 1C. It is worth noting that the carbon shell effectively inhibits the dissolution and diffusion of active material and enhances the electrode reaction kinetics during charge/discharge reaction together with degraded core size. Overall, the sophisticatedly designed multicore-shell structure not only effectively improves the electrochemical properties of FeF3 but also offers a new idea for refining transition metal-based electrode material.

Abstract:Porous Fe3O4/carbon microspheres (PFCMs) were successfully fabricated via a facile electrospray method and subsequent heat treatment, using ferrous acetylacetonate, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), Ketjen black (KB), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and polystyrene (PS) as raw materials. The porous carbon sphere framework decorated with well-dispersed CNTs and KB exhibits excellent electronic conductivity and acts as a good host to confine the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The abundant mesopores in the carbon matrix derived from polymer pyrolysis can effectively accommodate the volume changes of Fe3O4 during the charge/discharge process, facilitate electrolyte penetration, and promote fast ion diffusion. Moreover, a thin amorphous carbon layer on the Fe3O4 nanoparticle formed during polymer carbonization can further alleviate the mechanical stress associated with volume changes, and preventing aggregation and exfoliation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles during cycling. Therefore, as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the PFCMs exhibited excellent cycling stability with high specific capacities, and outstanding rate performances. After 130 cycles at a small current density of 0.1 A·g–1, the reversible capacity of the PFCM electrode is maintained at almost 1,317 mAh·g–1. High capacities of 746 and 525 mAh·g–1 were still achieved after 300 cycles at the larger currents of 1 and 5 A·g–1, respectively. The optimized structure design and facile fabrication process provide a promising way for the utilization of energy storage materials, which have high capacities but whose performance is hindered by large volume changes and poor electrical conductivity in lithium or sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides/sulfides are drawing growing attention as promising electrode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to their larger layer spacing and weaker ionic bond compared to transition metal oxides, which are conducive to the intercalation/de-intercalation of Li ions. However, the intrinsic low conductivity and large volume expansion remain a major obstacle for their practical applications. In this work, with the prediction help of the theory model, we design a yolk-shell structure of single-phase ternary FeS0.5Se0.5 and nitrogen-doped mesopore carbon (YS-FeS0.5Se0.5@NMC) via an interfacial co-assembly, followed by one-step selenization and vulcanization. In the composite, single-phase ternary FeS0.5Se0.5 yolk provides more active sites and faster ion/electron transport dynamics than binary Fe2O3, while N-doped mesoporous carbon shell effectively alleviates the large volume expansion of FeS0.5Se0.5, as revealed by in-situ Raman analysis and TEM observation. Meanwhile, the spatial confinement of outer carbon shell also ensures the mechanical stability of the electrode during cycles. These merits endow the YS-FeS0.5Se0.5@NMC anode with a high reversible capacity of 1417mA h/g at 200mA h/g after 120 cycles, and an exceptional rate capability. Abstract:Lithium-ion battery anode materials such as iron oxide suffer from large volume expansion during lithiation. In light of this problem, this work uses a template method to investigate the hollow structure that controls the Fe3O4@C void size. In the experiment, the hollow structure is controlled by the dosage of ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and Fe2O3 is coated with phenolic resin to reduce carbon to obtain an anode electrode material with excellent performance. The microstructure and morphology of the samples are analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brutern-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their electrical properties are characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), galvanostatic intermittent titration analysis, and galvanostatic charge–discharge. According to the results, Fe3O4@C-1.0 has a large vacancy, and the structure does not crack during the battery charging and discharging process. Furthermore, it exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, rate performance, and stable cycle performance.

Abstract:Over the last decade, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been thought of as promising alternatives for the new generation of the battery systems. Although the Li-S batteries possess high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg-1) and capacity (1675 mAh g-1), the problems of poor electron and ion conduction, volumetric expansion and sulfur immobilization greatly impede the wide applicability of Li-S batteries. Herein, a defect-rich multi-shelled Co3O4 microsphere structure doped with Fe was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method and a subsequent thermal treatment. The unique multi-shelled structure provides multiple spatial confinements for lithium polysulfides (LiPs) trapping and buffers the volume variation during cycling. Moreover, the rich oxygen-defect designed by controllable Fe doping can provide numerous catalytic sites for polysulfide redox reactions. Attributed to the synergistic effect of structural design and oxygen-defect fabrication, the sulfur composite electrode delivers a notable cycle performance, presenting a much lower capacity fading of 0.017% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 1 C and excellent rate capability of 571.3 mAh g-1 at 5 C. This work proposes a potential approach for designing transition-metal-oxide (TMO) based multi-shelled hollow structure combined with oxygen-defect, which also offers a new perspective on high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:A novel porous structure MnO-SiOx @C composite has been designed and prepared as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries through scalable spray pyrolysis and a subsequent annealing process. XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, and BET measurements indicate that the MnO-SiOx @C composite displays a spherical mesoporous structure with SiOx particles, embedded in the porous MnO structure combined with carbon coated on the surfaces. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the mutual segregation of the heterogeneous oxides of MnO and SiOx during delithiation and the buffer composition region at the origin of uniform carbon layers and abundant nanopores. In addition, the new phase Mn2SiO4, which is formed in the MnO-SiOx @C composite after 800 ºC, can act as the joint between MnO and SiOx to restrain the strain force originating from the volume change during the charge and discharge process. As a result, the obtained MnO-SiOx @C composite exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of high Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate capability and good cyclability.

Abstract:Due to the high theoretical capacity and energy density, conversion-type metal fluorides have captured plenty of attentions but still suffer from the inferior kinetic behaviors and serious capacity fading. For addressing the issues above, the strategies of surface/interface engineering are utilized for the preparation of sphere-like porous FeF 3 @C materials, where the as-resulted sample displays the uniform particle size (~ 150 nm in radii) and the ultra-thin carbon layers (thickness of ~ 10 nm). Significantly, benefitting from the rich oxygen of precursor, the interfacial chemical bonds FeOC are successfully constructed between carbon matrix and FeF 3 materials, accompanying by the enhancements of ions/electrons (e) conductivity and stability. When used as Li-storage cathodes, the initial lithium-ions storage capacity could reach up to ~ 400 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 . Even at 1.0 A·g −1 , the capacity could be still remained at about 210 mAh·g −1 , with the retention of 85% after 400 cycles. Assisted by the detailed kinetic behaviors, the considerable electrochemical properties come from the enhanced diffusion-controlled contributions, whilst the segregation of Fe with LiF is effectively alleviated by unique architecture. Moreover, during cycling, solid electrolyte interface film is reversibly formed/decomposed. Thus, this work is expected to offer rational exterior/interfacial designing strategies for metal-based samples.

Abstract:Reticulated mesoporous Fe2O3@C flakes, consisting of nanocrystalline alpha-Fe2O3 encased within a thin carbon skeleton, were synthesized using ferrocene as iron and carbon sources and a novel reaction agent of ammonium sulphate via a facile two-step heating route. Those flakes, which were several nanometers thick and 1-2 mm in diameter, showed high capacity, excellent cyclic stability and rate capability as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). An initial reversible capacity of 910 mA h g(-1) at a discharge/charge current of 0.1 A g(-1) was obtained, and the capacity showed a gradual increase during cycling, reaching a high capacity of 1080 mA h g(-1) after 120 cycles. An in situ lithiation study by transmission electron microscopy showed that the reticulated mesopores and the ultrathin feature of the Fe2O3@C flakes can largely accommodate the mechanical stresses and volume expansion of Fe2O3 during lithiation and hence maintain their integrity and provide excellent properties. The thin carbon skeleton not only facilitates the electronic conduction, but also inhibits the aggregation of nanocrystalline Fe2O3 flakes. The facile fabrication method and the unique structure of the mesoporous Fe2O3@C flakes offer high performance for LIB anodes and great potential for other applications of Fe2O3.

Abstract:Hierarchically nanostructured binary/multiple transition-metal oxides with electrically conductive coatings are very attractive for lithium-ion batteries owing to their excellent electrochemical properties induced by their unique compositions and microstructures. Herein, hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres are prepared by a simple one-step annealing in Ar atmosphere, using Mn-doped Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Mn-doped MIL-53(Fe)) as precursor. The MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite particles have a uniform nanosphere structure with a diameter of ∼100 nm, and each nanosphere is composed of clustered primary nanoparticles with an amorphous carbon shell, forming a unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture. The as-prepared hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres exhibit markedly enhanced lithium-storage performance, with a large capacity of 1297.5 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 200 mA g-1. The cycling performance is clarified through analyzing the galvanostatic discharge/charge voltage profiles and electrochemical impedance spectra at different cycles. The unique microstructures and Mn element doping of the hierarchical MnO-doped Fe3O4@C composite nanospheres lead to their enhanced lithium-storage performance.

Abstract:Porous microspherical structure for metal oxides or sulfides as anode material exhibits dramatic advantages in improving electrochemical properties of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, porous Fe1- x S microspheres with uniform size were synthesized through a hydrothermal reaction where L-aspartic acid molecules guide crystal growth and form secondary particles. The microsphere with perforated channels provides facile channels for the migration of Li+ and accommodates mechanical stress to suppress volume expansion. The residual carbon decomposed from the L-aspartic acid molecules in the final composite also facilitates the electron transfer and prevents polysulfides from dissolving into electrolyte. Thus, the Fe1- x S/C maintains superior structural stability in a long cycling with excellent reversible capacity at high rates. Specifically, the Fe1- x S/C electrode deliverers a capacity of 534 mAh g−1 at 20 A g−1 and lefts 810 mAh g−1 after 3000 cycles at 5 A g−1.

Abstract:A green and convenient approach has been developed to fabricate mesoporous Co3O4 hollow nanospheres composed of nanosized building subunits, which involves a morphology-inherited and thermolysis-induced transformation of Co-based coordination polymers. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the as-fabricated hollow nanospheres exhibited excellent electrochemical performance with high reversible specific capacity, excellent cycling stability (851 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) and exceptional rate capability (1053, 976, 887, and 695 mA h g(-1) at the current densities of 0.3, 0.5, 1 and 5 A g(-1), respectively).

Abstract:Bimetal oxide with its intricate nanostructure holds great potential for high-performance electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a facile strategy for the fabrication of hierarchical hollow Co3O4/ZnCo(2)O(4)microspheres is developed, involving a simple solvothermal synthesis and subsequent thermal annealing in air. An aggregation-dissolution-in situ recrystallization structure evolution and growth mechanism is proposed. Benefiting from the unique hierarchical hollow structure with rational porosity, synergistic effect of bimetal components, and better electrical conductivity, the as-synthesized Co3O4/ZnCo(2)O(4)hierarchical hollow microstructure shows outstanding lithium storage properties. As a result, a superior rate capability (842 mA h g(-1)at a current density of 4 A g(-1)) and an excellent cycle life (754 mA h g(-1)after 800 cycles at a current density of 2 A g(-1)) are obtained. The presented strategy could be applicable to the synthesis of mixed metal oxide hierarchical hollow structures with rational porosity for high-performance LIBs.
