Abstract:Although nanosizing Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) materials is an effective way to improve their rate performances, their low tap density and first cycle coulombic efficiency limit their practical applications. To tackle these problems while preserving the advanced rate performances, monodispersed mesoporous LTO submicrospheres are developed here. These submicrospheres are synthesized via a solvothermal method using TiO2 submicrospheres and LiOH as precursors followed by a mild calcinations. The roles of the solvent used in the solvothermal process and calcination temperature are systematically investigated and optimized. The LTO submicrospheres fabricated by the solvothermal process using a water-ethanol (60 vol%) solvent followed by a calcination process at 600 °C reveal a large sphere size of 660 ± 30 nm with a small primary particle size of 20-100 nm, a large specific surface area of 15.5 m(2) g(-1), an appropriate pore size of 4.5 nm and an ultra-high tap density of 1.62 g cm(-3). Furthermore, they show high crystallinity and no blockage of Li(+) ion transportation pathways. Due to the novel morphology and ideal crystal structure, these submicrospheres exhibit outstanding electrochemical performances. They display a high first cycle coulombic efficiency of 93.5% and a high charge capacity of 179 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 C between 1.0 and 2.5 V (vs. Li/Li(+)), surpassing the theoretical capacity of LTO. Their charge capacity at 10 C is as high as 109 mA h g(-1) with a capacity retention of 97.8% over 100 cycles. Therefore, this LTO material can be a superior and practical candidate for the anodes of high-power lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach combined with carbothermal reduction has been developed to synthesize monodisperse porous LiFePO4/C microspheres, which possess the diameter range of 1.0-1.5 mu m, high tap density of similar to 1.3 g cm(-3), and mesoporous characteristic with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 30.6 m(2) g(-1). The obtained microspheres show meatball-like morphology aggregated by the carbon-coated LiFePO4 nanoparticles. The electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results indicate that carbon coating can effectively enhance both of the electronic and ionic conductivities for LiFePO4/C microspheres. The Li-ion diffusion coefficient of the LiFePO4/C microspheres calculated from the cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves is similar to 6.25 x 10(-9) cm(2) s(-1). The electrochemical performance can achieve about 100 and 90 mAh g(-1) at 5C and 10C charge/discharge rates, respectively. As cathode material, the as-prepared LiFePO4/C microspheres show excellent rate capability and cycle stability, promising for high power lithium-ion batteries. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Facile Synthesis of Hierarchically Porous Li4Ti5O12 Microspheres for High Rate Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize hierarchically porous Li4Ti5O12 microspheres assembled by well-crystalline nanoparticles. The fabrication process is very simple, involving only hydrothermal treatment of commercial anatase TiO2 powder in LiOH solution and a following calcination procedure without employing any surfactants or templates. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis were used to characterize their morphologies and structures. Such Li4Ti5O12 nano/microspherical superstructures, with sizes of ca. 4 mu m in diameter, exhibits rich hierarchical pores and a specific surface area of 57.5 m(2) g(-1). A possible growth mechanism of the nano/microspherical superstructure is further discussed. The calcination temperature has a great effect on the crystal structure and electrochemical properties of the materials. The hierarchically porous Li4Ti5O12 microspheres annealed at 700 degrees C have the perfect crystallization and optimal particle size, which can deliver good coulombic efficiency, ultrahigh rate capability at high rates, and excellent capacity retention over 200 cycles.

Abstract:The spinel Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is a promising lithium ion battery anode material with the potential to supplement graphite as an industry standard, but its low electrical conductivity and Li-ion diffusivity need to be overcome. Here, mesoporous LTO microspheres with carbon-coatings were formed by phase separation of a homopolymer from microphase-separated block copolymers of varying molar masses containing sol-gel precursors. Upon heating the composite underwent a sol-gel condensation reaction followed by the eventual pyrolysis of the polymer templates. The optimised mesoporous LTO microspheres demonstrated an excellent electrochemical performance with an excellent specific discharge capacity of 164 mA h g-1, 95% of which was retained after 1000 cycles at a C-rate of 10.

Abstract:Hollow TiO2–X porous microspheres consisted of numerous well-crystalline nanocrystals with superior structural integrity and robust hollow interior were synthesized by a facile sol-gel template-assisted approach and two-step carbonprotected calcination method, together with hydrogenation treatment. They exhibit a uniform diameter of ~470 nm with a thin porous wall shell of ~50 nm in thickness. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume are ~19 m2/g and 0.07 cm3/g, respectively. These hollow TiO2–X porous microspheres demonstrated excellent lithium storage performance with stable capacity retention for over 300 cycles (a high capacity of 151 mAh/g can be obtained up to 300 cycles at 1 C, retaining 81.6% of the initial capacity of 185 mAh/g) and enhanced rate capability even up to 10 C (222, 192, 121, and 92.1 mAh/g at current rates of 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 C, respectively). The intrinsic increased conductivity of the hydrogenated TiO2 microspheres and their robust hollow structure beneficial for lithium ion-electron diffusion and mitigating the structural strain synergistically contribute to the remarkable improvements in their cycling stability and rate performance.

Abstract:Uniform TiO2 nanospheres from hollow, core-shell and mesoporous structures have been synthesized using quasi-nano-sized carbonaceous spheres as templates. The TiO2 nanospheres formed after calcination at 400 °C are composed of ∼7 nm nanoparticles and the shells of the hollow TiO2 nanospheres are as thin as a single layer of nanoparticles. The ultrafine nanoparticles endow the hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres with short lithium ion diffusion paths leading to high discharge specific capacities of 211.9 and 196.0 mA h g-1 at a current rate of 1 C (167.5 mA g-1) after 100 cycles, and especially superior discharge specific capacities of 125.9 and 113.4 mA h g-1 at a high current rate of up to 20 C. The hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres also show superior cycling stability with long-term discharge capacities of 103.0 and 110.2 mA h g-1, respectively, even after 3000 cycles at a current rate of 20 C.

Abstract:An in situ carbon-encapsulating solution route for the synthesis of Li4Ti5O12@C composite hollow microspheres has been developed. The finally obtained Li4Ti5O12@C hollow microspheres possess a microsized spherical shape, embedded Li4Ti5O12 nanocrystals, and fully encapsulating conductive carbon shells, which endow this Li4Ti5O12 anode material with high specific capacity, rate capability, and cycle stability. Owing to their unique microstructure characteristics, these hollow Li4Ti5O12@C microsphere composites are promising anode materials for highly efficient Li-ion batteries with an excellent rate capability (discharge capacity of 169, 152, 130, 116, 93, and 76 mAhg(-1) at 0.2, 1, 2, 5, 30 and 60C, respectively) and a significantly enhanced cycling performance.

Abstract:Well-defined mesoporous TiNb6O17 microspheres are synthesized through a facile solvothermal method in isopropanol followed by a thermal treatment. The mesoporous TiNb6O17 microspheres are monodisperse with uniform morphology and are assembled by interconnected nanocrystals. The hierarchical mesoporous structure of the TiNb6O17 microspheres not only supplies a large electrode/electrolyte interfacial area but also reduces the diffusion distance of Li+, such that the TiNb6O17 microspheres have excellent electrochemical properties, especially a good rate performance. As the rate is increased from 1 to 5, 10, 20, and 30 C, the discharge capacity of the TiNb6O17 microspheres is slowly reduced from 273.7 to 239.5, 228.2, 216.0, and 175.3mAh g(-1), respectively. The good rate performance is mainly caused by the pseudocapacitive effect. These mesoporous TiNb6O17 microspheres are promising anode materials for producing lithium-ion battery with excellent rate capacity and good safety. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, a versatile facile route to synthesize mesoporous hollow-structured metal oxides is demonstrated using sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres as hard templates. SEM and TEM images show that the Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO hollow microspheres are self-assembled by nanorods, nanoparticles and nanosheets, respectively. Hollow and mesoporous structures not only provide enhanced mechanical stabilities to buffer the large volume changes during the charge/discharge processes, but also provide large specific areas for sufficient penetration of electrolyte, thus leading to an excellent cyclic stability and rate capability. As proofs-of-concepts, all of the hollow and mesoporous metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO) deliver high initial discharge capacities and good capacity retentions (>80%) after more than 100 cycles in half cells. Most important of all, these assembled full-cells (MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2) also delivere excellent electrochemical performances. This work clearly demonstrates that the MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2 configuration are promising alternative high power-density energy storage devices in the near future.

Abstract:LiFePO4 and LiFePO4/C microspheres are successfully synthesized via facile co-precipitation in an elevated temperature oil bath. Their morphologies and structures are investigated by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. LiFePO4/C microspheres are uniform between 2 and 4 mm in diameter and composed of nanoparticles from 30 to 80 nm in size. Nanoparticles are coated by a thin nano-carbon layer and imbedded into three-dimensional nano-carbon networks. LiFePO4/C microspheres exhibit a high tap density (1.82 g cm(-3)), deliver large reversible discharge capacity of 165 mA h g(-1) at 0.1C rate, excellent rate capability of 106 mA h g(-1) at 50C rate, and capacity retention over 98% after 20 cycles even applied 50C rate. Abstract:Novel sandwich-like TiO2@C composite hollow spheres with {001} facets exposed are obtained through hydrothermal carbon-coating treatment for the first time. Based on investigations by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), XRD, laser Raman spectra, and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, TiO2 shells are proved to be wrapped in porous carbon layers, which provide conductive support for TiO2, resulting the improvement in electronic conductivity and diffusion of Li+. Moreover, these TiO2 shells expose the reactive {001} facets, which facilitate Li+ insertion/extraction. Through combining the above advantages, TiO2@C composite hollow spheres show more superior rate capability and higher stability than TiO2 nanoparticles (Degussa P25), TiO2 nanosheets with {001} facets exposed, and TiO2 hollow spheres before carbon-coating. This method may be extended to synthesize other sandwich-like composite hollow spheres for energy storage.
Ti2Nb10O29–x Mesoporous Microspheres As Promising Anode Materials for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Ti2Nb10O29 has recently been reported as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, its poor electronic conductivity and insufficient Li+-ion diffusion coefficient significantly limit its rate capability. To tackle this issue, a strategy combining nanosizing and crystal-structure modification is employed. Ti2Nb10O29-x mesoporous microspheres with a sphere-size range of 0.5-4 mu m are prepared by a one-step solvothermal method followed by thermal treatment in N-2. These Ti2Nb10O29-x mesoporous microspheres exhibit primary nanoparticles, a large specific surface area (22.9 m(2) g(-1)) and suitable pore sizes, leading to easy electron/Li+-ion transport and good interfacial reactivity. Ti2Nb10O29-x shows a defective shear ReO3 crystal structure with O2- vacancies and an increased unit cell volume, resulting in its increased Li+-ion diffusion coefficient. Besides Ti4+ and Nb5+ ions, Ti2Nb10O29-x comprises Nb4+ ions with unpaired 4d electrons, which significantly increase its electronic conductivity. As a result of these improvements, the Ti2Nb10P29-x mesoporous microspheres reveal superior electrochemical performances in term of large reversible specific capacity (309 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C), outstanding rate capability (235 mAh g(-1) at 40 C) and durable cyclic stability (capacity retention of 92.1% over 100 cycles at 10 C). Abstract:While spinel Li4Ti5O12 has attracted great attention owing to its excellent cycling stability and safety as anode materials of lithium ion batteries, there is still a challenge to produce high-performance Li4Ti5O12 with a cost-effective and scalable process. Herein, we developed a facile one-pot strategy for scalable synthesis of carbon-coated Li4Ti5O12–TiO2 microspheres. The novel material not only delivered a high capacity of 162.5 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 C but also exhibited excellent rate capability and cycling stability. The capacity of up to 146.6 mA h g−1 was retained after 350 cycles at 5 C, and no obvious capacity reduction was found during cycles. The superior electrochemical performance can be attributed primarily to the uniform carbon layer outside and the high density of grain boundary in the compact microspheres, resulting in enhanced electrical conductivity and more channels for lithium ion insertion/extraction reaction.

Abstract:Rational design and facile synthesis of TiO2 based hybrid electrodes with hierarchical microstructure have great advantages for exploration of advanced electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). We design and synthesize hierarchical hollow microspheres with inner carbon skeleton supported outer TiO2-x few-layer nanosheets (C@TiO2-x). The "core-shell C@TiO2-x microspheres exhibit relatively high specific surface area and a remarkable electric conductivity (0.264 mu S cm(-1)). The lithium kinetics of C@TiO2-x microspheres is significantly improved due to synergistic effects of few-layer TiO2-x nanosheets and conductive carbon skeleton. The C@TiO2-x microspheres manifest an excellent reversible capacity of 323 mAh g(-1), together with an ultralong cycling lifetime that the capacity shows similar to 220 mAh g(-1) after 1000 cycles at 1.0 C. The C@TiO2-x microspheres also deliver a relatively high performance in rate capacity (108 mAh g(-1) at 20 C). When they are assembled into a hybrid lithium-ion capacitor, relatively high capacitance of 58 F g(-1) is achieved so that high power density reaches 14 kW kg(-1).
