Abstract:Here, we prepared LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4 microspheres with an open three-dimensional nanoporous structure by a facile ion-exchange solvothermal method. The micro/nano-structured material exhibits an ultralong cycle life, and retains a reversible capacity of 105 mA h g(-1) after 1000 cycles at 5 C, corresponding to the capacity retention of 94.0% and only 0.0068 mA h g(-1) loss per cycle.

Abstract:Double-shelled hollow microspheres of LiMn2O4 were prepared by a facile self-template method. The inner and outer shells of the obtained microspheres are composed of nanoparticles with diameters ranging between 200-400 nm. Galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling shows that this material delivers a discharge capacity of 127 mAh g(-1) at C/10 rate and a capacity retainability of 80% after 800 cycles at 5 C rate, revealing a high reversible capacity, superior rate capability and excellent cycling stability under high rates. The improved performance is attributed to the short Li+ ion diffusion lengths in the nanobuilding blocks and the void core and space between the inner and outer shells to accommodate the volume expansion/contraction during Li+ ions insertion/extraction processes.

Abstract:The 5 V-cathode material LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 microspheres with hollow, solid or core-shelled inner structures for the lithium-ion batteries are designed and fabricated by a multi-step synthesis procedure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) are employed to characterize the microstructures. Compared with the hollow and solid inner structures, the core-shell structured LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 exhibits excellent cycling stability and outstanding rate performance, which delivers a discharge capacity of 111.5 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 1 C, and 98 mA h g−1 at 8 C, respectively. Further analyses with cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrate that the core-shell structure can provide structural stability and shortened lithium diffusion path at both room and elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Two types of LiMn2O4 microspheres with similar sizes but adjustable hollow structures have been synthesized using a new and simple approach. Their performance as cathode materials for lithium ion battery applications has been studied and correlated with the hollow structural parameters. Through a solid state reaction between LiOH and mesoporous MnO2 obtained by the complete decomposition of MnCO3, LiMn2O4 hollow spheres with a robust wall and small cavity size are prepared (LiMn2O4-A). The fusion of the mesopores and the Kirkendall effect during the lithiation process are responsible for the hollow interior formation. In another approach through partial decomposition and selective etching, LiMn2O4 hollow spheres with thin walls are prepared (LiMn2O4-B). It is demonstrated that LiMn2O4-A shows larger capacity, superior rate capability, and better cycling stability compared to LiMn2O4-B. The former exhibits an initial discharge capacity of similar to 120 mA h g(-1), maintains 96.6% of the initial capacity after 105 cycles at 1 C and similar to 90% of the capacity at 0.1 C when discharged at 5 degrees C.

Abstract:Developing advanced cathode materials to achieve the high-power applications is an important technology for the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, hierarchical LiMnPO4 microspheres are designed and fabricated using MnCO3 microspheres as the self-sacrificial template. The novel hierarchical structure with high tap density and more exposed active sites is favorable for the electrolyte penetration and also provides sufficient contact areas for fast Li-ion intercalation and deintercalation reaction. In addition, the uniform thin carbon layer extending from the interior to the outside of the LiMnPO4 microsphere, could further construct a conductive and robust carbon network, which will inevitably accelerate the transport of electrons and improve the discharge capacity. Specifically, a high reversibility capacity of 158.4 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 C and 104.3 mAh g(-1) at 5 C is achieved. Furthermore, the superior capacity retention with 98% after 200 cycles at 5 C is maintained, revealing an excellent cycle stability. This work may open up a promising strategy to prepare other advanced electrode materials. (C) 2019 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate the synthesis and application of spinel LiMn2O4 with unique micro-/nano-hybrid structure as a promising cathode for high power Li-ion batteries. LiMn2O4 with high crystallinity has been prepared successfully by solid-state lithiation of hexagonal MnO2 via a template-engaged reaction. The product presents hollow microsphere with ultrathin outer shell assembled by nanoparticles. Electrochemical measurements indicate that LiMn2O4 hollow microspheres exhibit superior rate capability and cycleability to the solid microspheres and commercial bulk counterparts. The initial discharge capacity of 91 mAh g(-1) can be delivered at 20 C, and capacity retention of over 90% is obtained after 500 cycles at this high rate. The superior electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique micro-/nano-hybrid structure that facilitates the fast Li-intercalation kinetics and good structure stability.

Abstract:Mixed/composite oxides of transition metals with hollow structures, especially multishelled hollow architecture, have promising potential for different applications, but their syntheses still remain a big challenge. Herein, a facile coordination polymer precursor method was developed to construct various multishelled Zn-Mn-O hollow micro-spheres, including Zn-Mn-O-3, ZnMn2O4, and ZnMn2O4/Mn2O3. The composition of the hollow structures can be adjusted by controlling the composition of the coordination polymer precursors, which are easily obtained with Zn2+, Mn2+, and salicylic acid under solvothermal conditions. With a simple programmable heating process, the shell of the hollow structures can be adjusted and double-/triple-shelled ZnMnO3, ZnMn2O4, and ZnMn2O4/Mn2O3 hollow microspheres have been controllably obtained. When the triple-shelled ZnMn2O4 hollow microspheres are used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, excellent activity and enhanced stability can be achieved. The triple-shelled hollow ZnMn2O4 exhibits a reversible capacity of 537 mA.h.g(-1) at 400 mA.g(-1) and a nearly 100% capacity retention after 150 cycles. This strategy is facile and scalable for the production of high-quality complex hollow nanostructures, with the possibility of extension to the preparation of other mixed metal oxides with complex structures.

Abstract:The hollow core–shell ZnMn2O4 microspheres are successfully prepared by a solvothermal carbon templating method and then a annealing process. The crystal phase and particle morphology of resultant ZnMn2O4 microspheres are characterized by XRD and TEM. The electrochemical properties of the ZnMn2O4 microspheres as an anode material are investigated for lithium ion batteries. The results show that the ZnMn2O4 microspheres exhibit a reversible capacity of 855.8mAhg−1 at a current density of 200mAg−1 after 50 cycles. Even at 1000mAg−1, the reversible capacity of the ZnMn2O4 microspheres is still kept at 724.4mAhg−1 after 60 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance suggests the promising potential of the hollow core–shell ZnMn2O4 microspheres in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Porous LiMn2O4 hollow microspheres were facilely prepared by incorporation of Li and Mn elements into a spherical polymeric precursor through copolymerization of lithium and manganese acetates with resorcinol and hexamethylenetetramine and then burning off the organic matrix at appropriate temperatures in air. The LiMn2O4 inherited the spherical morphology of the polymeric precursor but showed hollow porous structure assembled by nanocrystals of about 50-100 nm in size. When tested as cathode of Li-ion batteries, the LiMn2O4 hollow spheres exhibited excellent rate capability and cycle stability. A discharge capacity of above 90 mAh g(-1) was maintained at 10 C (1 C = 120 mAg(-1)), and the cells can still deliver a discharge capacity over 100 mAh g(-1) after another 115 cycles at 0.5 C. With such excellent electrochemical properties, the prepared LiMn2O4 hollow microspheres could be promising cathode of Li-ion batteries for long term and high power applications. Abstract:Lithium-rich Li1.05Mn2O4 hollow nanospheres have been successfully prepared by air-calcining lithiated MnO2 precursor at a low temperature of 550°C, which was synthesized by chemical lithiation of hollow MnO2 nanospheres with LiI at 70°C for 12h. The lithium-rich Li1.05Mn2O4 hollow nanospheres exhibit an excellent cycling stability and rate capability as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries: it maintains 90% of its initial capacity after 500 cycles, and keeps 70% of the reversible capacity at 0.1C rat, even at 15C rate.

Abstract:Solid and hollow microspheres of LiMn2O4 have been synthesized by lithiating MnCO3 solid microspheres and MnO2 hollow microspheres, respectively. The LiMn2O4 solid microspheres and hollow microspheres had a similar size of about 1.5 ?m, and the shell thickness of the hollow microspheres was only 100 nm. When used as a cathode material in lithium ion batteries, the hollow microspheres exhibited better rate capability than the solid microspheres. However, the tap density of the LiMn2O4 solid microspheres (1.0 g/cm3) was about four times that of the hollow microspheres (0.27 g/cm3). The results show that controlling the particle size of LiMn2O4 is very important in terms of its practical application as a cathode material, and LiMn2O4 with moderate particle size may afford acceptable values of both rate capability and tap density.

Abstract:Herein, a novel dumbbell-like MnO/C microspheres with the yolk-shell structure, high monodispersity and regular morphology are successfully prepared by calcining precursors MnCO3/RF microspheres under the vacuum condition. The effects of calcination temperature on morphology, carbonization degrees of carbon shells and pore properties of MnO/C microspheres are systematically investigated. Benefited from the yolk-shell structure, reasonable distribution of MnO nanocrystals and porous structure, MnO/C microspheres prepared at 550°C exhibit high reversible capacity of 852.6 mAh/g at 1.32 C over 500 cycles, long-term cycling stability (888.4 mAh/g at 2.64 C over 400 cycles) and excellent rate performance (454.39 mAh/g at 6.60 C and 253.28 mAh/g at 13.20 C are remained). Furthermore, the lithiation evolution of MnO/C microspheres in the long-term cycling process at nano- and micro-scales are revealed and the LiCoO2||MnO/C full cell present a great cyclic stability. Dumbbell-like MnO/C microspheres demonstrate potential applications for next-generation Li-ion batteries as anode materials profited from superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:In this paper, a versatile facile route to synthesize mesoporous hollow-structured metal oxides is demonstrated using sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres as hard templates. SEM and TEM images show that the Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO hollow microspheres are self-assembled by nanorods, nanoparticles and nanosheets, respectively. Hollow and mesoporous structures not only provide enhanced mechanical stabilities to buffer the large volume changes during the charge/discharge processes, but also provide large specific areas for sufficient penetration of electrolyte, thus leading to an excellent cyclic stability and rate capability. As proofs-of-concepts, all of the hollow and mesoporous metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO) deliver high initial discharge capacities and good capacity retentions (>80%) after more than 100 cycles in half cells. Most important of all, these assembled full-cells (MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2) also delivere excellent electrochemical performances. This work clearly demonstrates that the MxOy(M=Fe, Co, Ni)/LiCoO2 configuration are promising alternative high power-density energy storage devices in the near future.

Abstract:Uniform ZnMn2O4 hollow microspheres have been synthesized by a facile coprecipitation and annealing method. The resultant ZnMn2O4 hollow microspheres exhibit high specific discharge capacity, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical performance may be attributed to the beneficial features of reduced diffusion length for Li+ ions and enhanced structural integrity with sufficient void space for buffering the volume variation during the Li+ insertion/extraction.

Abstract:Yolk-structured microspheres of spinel LiMn2O4 are successfully prepared by a specially designed multi-step synthesis procedure involving precipitation, controlled oxidation, selective etching and chemical lithiation. Solid-structured and hollow-structured LiMn2O4 are also synthesized by a similar method for comparison. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method and IR spectroscopy are employed to study their structures and compositions. The electrochemical properties of the LiMn2O4/Li cells are also tested. The results indicate that LiMn2O4 powder composed of yolk-structured microspheres possesses remarkable high rate capability and outstanding high capacity retention not only at room temperature but also at elevated temperatures. This study may provide significant new insight into restraining the capacity fading of LiMn2O4 electrodes and the yolk-structured LiMn2O4 may be used for the next generation of lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:LiMnxFe1-xPO4/C x Fe 1-x PO 4 /C is considered a promising next-generation cathode material with significant commercial potential, inheriting the safety of LiFePO4 4 while offering higher energy densities. However, the extremely low conductivity and the Jahn-Teller effect induced by Mn3+ 3 + limit its practical capacity and rate performance. Effective modifications can be achieved through particle nanonization and uniform carbon coating. Here, we synthesized microspherical LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C 0.6 Fe 0.4 PO 4 /C cathode materials using a hydrothermal method combined with spray drying carbon coating. The cathode material exhibits a microsphere structure composed of aggregated nanorods with a uniform 3 nm carbon coating, showing good dispersibility, small specific surface area and high tap density. In-situ diffraction analysis showed that expanding the single-phase solid solution region during (de) lithiation can reduce the energy barrier for electron transport, improve the kinetics of the (dis)charge process, and enhance both cycling and rate performance. The initial capacity at 0.1C can reach 155 mAh/g, and the capacity remains at 133.5 mAh/g with a retention rate of 97.1 % after 300 cycles. The synergistic effect of particle nanonization and uniform carbon coating endows the LiMnxFe1-xPO4/C x Fe 1-x PO 4 /C material with excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring versatile topological architectures are considered to be efficient self-sacrificial templates to achieve mesoporous nanostructured materials. A facile and cost-efficient strategy is developed to scalably fabricate binary metal oxides with complex hollow interior structures and tunable compositions. Bimetal-organic frameworks of Ni-Co-BTC solid microspheres with diverse Ni/Co ratios are readily prepared by solvothermal method to induce the Ni x Co3-x O4 multishelled hollow microspheres through a morphology-inherited annealing treatment. The obtained mixed metal oxides are demonstrated to be composed of nanometer-sized subunits in the shells and large void spaces left between adjacent shells. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, Ni x Co3-x O4 -0.1 multishelled hollow microspheres deliver a high reversible capacity of 1109.8 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1 with an excellent high-rate capability. Appropriate capacities of 832 and 673 mAh g-1 could also be retained after 300 cycles at large currents of 1 and 2 A g-1 , respectively. These prominent electrochemical properties raise a concept of synthesizing MOFs-derived mixed metal oxides with multishelled hollow structures for progressive lithium-ion batteries.
