Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is an attractive anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but its applications have been significantly hampered by the huge volume change during the electrochemical cycling. In this work we demonstrate a rational design of crystalline SnO2@amorphous TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, where the crystalline SnO2 core was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and the amorphous TiO2 shell was deposited by atomic layer deposition. The SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures deliver excellent performances during the electrochemical process, having a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at cycling rate of 80 mA g(-1), which is still up to 703 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. The acceptable rate capacity is also revealed with 412 mAh g(-1) at 400mA g(-1). The coulombic efficiency is stable at around 100% regardless of cycling rates and numbers. The electrochemical performances of the SnO2@TiO2 batteries are better than those of the SnO2 ones without TiO2 coating. In the SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures, the amorphous TiO2 shell layer can experience an isotropic stress, having the ability to evidently reduce the volume change, lattice stress and so the risk of fracture during the cycling process, which is responsible for their outstanding behaviors. The strategy provided in our study is expected to be a precious guideline for designing an ideal electrode for energy storage devices. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
A novel Co-Li2O@Si core-shell nanowire array composite as a high-performance lithium-ion battery anode material.

Abstract:We report a novel material of Co-Li2O@Si core-shell nanowire array synthesized via the lithiation of pre-synthesized CoO@Si core-shell nanowire arrays during the first cycle. When the potential window versus lithium was controlled between 0.01-1.2 V, the coated Si shell could be electrochemically active, while the Co-Li2O nanowire core could function as a stable mechanical support and an efficient electron conducting pathway during the charge-discharge process. The Co-Li2O@Si core-shell nanowire array anodes exhibit good cyclic stability and high power capability compared to planar Si film electrodes.

Abstract:The hollow core–shell ZnMn2O4 microspheres are successfully prepared by a solvothermal carbon templating method and then a annealing process. The crystal phase and particle morphology of resultant ZnMn2O4 microspheres are characterized by XRD and TEM. The electrochemical properties of the ZnMn2O4 microspheres as an anode material are investigated for lithium ion batteries. The results show that the ZnMn2O4 microspheres exhibit a reversible capacity of 855.8mAhg−1 at a current density of 200mAg−1 after 50 cycles. Even at 1000mAg−1, the reversible capacity of the ZnMn2O4 microspheres is still kept at 724.4mAhg−1 after 60 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance suggests the promising potential of the hollow core–shell ZnMn2O4 microspheres in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are a promising class of rechargeable Li batteries with a potentially very high achievable energy density. One of the major challenges for Li-O2 batteries is the high charge overpotential, which results in a low energy efficiency. In this work size-selected subnanometer Ir clusters are used to investigate cathode materials that can help control lithium superoxide formation during discharge, which has good electronic conductivity needed for low charge potentials. It is found that Ir particles can lead to lithium superoxide formation as the discharge product with Ir particle sizes of ∼1.5 nm giving the lowest charge potentials. During discharge these 1.5 nm Ir nanoparticles surprisingly evolve to larger ones while incorporating Li to form core-shell structures with Ir3Li shells, which probably act as templates for growth of lithium superoxide during discharge. Various characterization techniques including DEMS, Raman, titration, and HRTEM are used to characterize the LiO2 discharge product and the evolution of the Ir nanoparticles. Density functional calculations are used to provide insight into the mechanism for formation of the core-shell Ir3Li particles. The in situ formed Ir3Li core-shell nanoparticles discovered here provide a new direction for active cathode materials that can reduce charge overpotentials in Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Metal‐Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively studied due to their porous structures and large specific surface areas. Its unique combination of central metal and organic ligand has become a common precursor for the synthesis of metal phosphides, selenides, oxides and sulfides. However, the carbonaceous structure derived from some MOF materials is still not enough to perfectly alleviate the negative impact of the volume change of metal sulfides. In this paper, bimetallic MOF (Zn‐Co‐ZIF) was used as a precursor, coated with dopamine hydrochloride and then calcined and gas‐phase vulcanized to prepare ZnS/CoS2‐C@NC with a double carbon layer core‐shell structure. The existence of the two carbonaceous structures can not only improve the electron transport ability, but also play an important role in alleviating the volume expansion caused by metal sulfides during repeated charging and discharging. Due to its stable carbon layer structure, ZnS/CoS2‐C@NC has a higher specific capacity (1175.4 mAh g‐1 in Lithium Ion Batteries(LIBs) and 430.9 mAh g‐1 in Sodium Ion Batteries(SIBs) after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g‐1 respectively) and excellent rate capability (338.2 mAh g‐1 specific capacity maintained after 2000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g‐1 in LIBs) This article is protected by copyright. Yolk-Shell Nano ZnO@Co-Doped NiO with Efficient Polarization Adsorption and Catalysis Performance for Superior Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Abstract:Achieving strong adsorption and catalytic ability toward polar lithium polysulfide species (LiPSs) of the sulfur host in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is essential for their electrochemical cyclic stability. Herein, a strategy of "self-termination of ion exchange" is put forward to synthesize the novel yolk-shell sulfur host composed of ZnO nanoparticles confined in Co-doped NiO (CDN) polyhedron (ZCCDN). After sulfur infiltration, the obtained S/ZCCDN cathode achieves excellent performance of 738.56 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 C with a very low capacity decay rate of only 0.048% per cycle. Even at 1 C, 501.05 mAh g-1 could be retained after 500 cycles, suggesting a capacity decay ratio of only 0.076% per cycle. The good cycle performance is attributed to the improved LiPSs' conversion kinetics, which originates from ZCCDN's sturdy chemical affinity and strong catalytic ability to polar LiPSs. For the first time, by electron holography, the local interfacial polarization electric field is clarified to be existed in the material which is conducive to the capture of LiPSs and the migration of electrons and Li+ from the mesopores. This work provides a rational way for the use of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and development of cathode materials for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are received the extensive attention due to their high-safety, huge cost competitiveness, and eco-friendliness. However, they are still limited by advanced cathode materials in terms of cycle stability and energy density. Herein, hierarchical α-MnO 2 @La x Mn 1-x O 2-δ (α-MnO 2 @LMO) core–shell nanostructures are developed to improve the electrochemical performance of AZIBs. In this structure, the internal hollow nanotubes mechanically support the external La x Mn 1-x O 2-δ nanosheets, forming a porous, open, and robust electrode architecture. Benefiting from unique structure, the α-MnO 2 @LMO cathode exhibits good initial specific capacity (240 mAh g −1 ) and cyclic stability. Moreover, the α-MnO 2 @LMO cathode delivers a specific capacity of 115 mAh g −1 with 90% of the initial capacity after 1500 cycles at 1 A g −1 . The electrochemical dynamics test, charge–discharge mechanism study and phase and structure evolution analysis show that the formation of core–shell structure not only enhance the structural stability of MnO 2 , alleviate the dissolution of Mn, and improve the transport kinetics of Zn 2+ , but also inhibit the irreversible ZnMn 2 O 4 produced in the process of repeated H + and Zn 2+ co insertion/extraction. This study intends to provide an alternative method for the next generation cathode materials for AZIB.

The nucleation and equiaxial growth of Li2O2 are experimentally and theoretically confirmed to be taking place on the layered MoSe2‐shell surface, which significantly improves the electrochemical activity with superior specific capacities and ultralong cycle‐life.

Abstract:The development of cathode catalysts with a porous structure is essential to design Li-O-2 batteries with a high rate performance and good cycle stability. Herein, spinel-type porous cobalt-manganese oxide (Co-Mn-O) nanocubes derived from metal organic frameworks were employed as an electrocatalyst in a Li-O-2 battery. The battery with the porous Co-Mn-O nanocubes electrode showed a low overpotential and enhanced capacity. The synergistic effects of large specific surface area, porous structure, and the high electrocatalytic activity of the porous Co-Mn-O nanocubes electrode endowed the Li-O-2 battery with a good rate performance and excellent cycle stability up to 100 cycles.

Abstract:Manganese-based oxides are common cathode materials for aqueous-based zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) because of their great capacity and high working voltage. However, the sharp decline of capacity caused by the dissolution of manganese-based cathode materials and the low-rate performance are the shackles that restrict their development. To address these problems, a unique core-shell structured Mn2O3@ZnMn2O4/C hollow microspheres is reported as an ideal cathode material for AZIBs. Benefiting from the hollow structure, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) derived carbon and ZnMn2O4. Its application in AZIBs as the cathode demonstrates its satisfactory rate performance, high cycle stability and excellent reversibility. Its high reversible capacity is undeniable, which reaches its maximum of 289.9 mAh g-1 at 200 mA g-1 and maintains the capacity of 203.5 mAh g-1 after cycling for 700 times at 1000 mA g-1. These excellent performances indicate that this material is a very potential cathode material of AZIBs.

High Stability Hypha-Like Core-Shell Nanostructure by In Situ Induced Phase Inversion for Zinc Metal Batteries

Abstract:Nanomaterials are widely used in many fields for their unique physical and chemical properties and especially demonstrate irreplaceability in energy storage systems. In this paper, a novel composite of copper sulfide with hypha-like core-shell nano-structure is synthesized by in situ phase inversion method, which serves as high stability negative electrode materials of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). The unique structure facilitates efficient electron and ion transport, enhances the kinetics of electrochemical reactions, and effectively suppresses the undesired expansion and decomposition of transition metal compounds. As a result, the half battery exhibits high specific capacity (250.2 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), reliable rate performance, and cycle stability (98.3 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 500 cycles). Additionally, when assembled with ZnxMnO2 positive to form a full battery, it demonstrates good cycling capacity at an intermediate current density of 2 A g-1, while maintaining excellent structural stability over 5,000 cycles (61% retention).

Abstract:Porous structure and surface modification have been widely studied in applying metal oxide nanomaterials as Li-ion battery anodes for overcoming problems such as poor conductivity and large volume variation. Here, we demonstrate a direct triple-decomposition process for the in situ synthesis of C/Cu/ZnO porous hybrids. In a typical porous structure, 5-10 nm sized ZnO and Cu nanoparticles aggregate randomly and are modified with carbon layers in thickness of 1 nm. Moreover, the resulted hybrid nanostructures show a high and stable specific capacity of 818 mAh g(-1) at a current rate of 50 mA g(-1) with almost 100% capacity retention for up to 100 cycles when used an anode material for lithium ion batteries. By combination of the structural analyses and electrochemical behaviors, it could be speculated that the porous structure and the modifications of copper nanoparticles and carbon layers are mainly responsible for the dramatically improved electrochemical performance of ZnO anodes.
Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of Core-Shell Structured LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Microspheres for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:The 5 V-cathode material LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 microspheres with hollow, solid or core-shelled inner structures for the lithium-ion batteries are designed and fabricated by a multi-step synthesis procedure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) are employed to characterize the microstructures. Compared with the hollow and solid inner structures, the core-shell structured LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 exhibits excellent cycling stability and outstanding rate performance, which delivers a discharge capacity of 111.5 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 1 C, and 98 mA h g−1 at 8 C, respectively. Further analyses with cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrate that the core-shell structure can provide structural stability and shortened lithium diffusion path at both room and elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Core-shell structured material consisting of Co@Co3O4 core encapsulated in carbon nano-onions (CNOs) shell using 1-hexyl-3-methyl imidazolium dilyanamide ([HMIm]N(CN)2) as carbon source were synthesized by high-temperature carbonization and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidation. In the process of high-temperature carbonization, cobalt ions were in-situ reduced to metallic cobalt, producing core-shell structured Co@CNOs. Subsequently, Co@Co3O4@CNOs was obtained using H2O2 oxidation, in which parts of the metallic cobalt were in-situ oxidized to Co3O4, and simultaneously the carbon material was not lost. The structural characterizations indicating that the Co@Co3O4@CNOs was composed of three crystalline phases, with a higher degree of graphitization and a larger specific surface area. When applied to lithium-ion batteries anode, Co@Co3O4@CNOs showed superior reversible capacity (865 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 0.5C) and rate performance (403 mAh g−1 after 1500 cycles at 10C). Its superior electrochemical performance was attributed to CNOs, nitrogen doping, rich mesopores, and the synergistic effect between Co3O4 and conductive metallic cobalt, uniformly dispersed Co@Co3O4 not only have excellent structural stability but also have improved electrical conductivity and ion transfer.

Abstract:The yolk-shell structure has a unique advantage in lithium-ion batteries applications due to its ability to effectively buffer the volume expansion of the lithiation/delithiation process. However, its development is limited by the low contact point between the core and shell. Herein, we propose a general strategy of simultaneous construction of sufficient reserved space and multi-continuous active channels by pyrolysis of two carbon substrates. A double-shell structure consisting of Co3O4 anchored to hollow carbon sphere and external self-supporting zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) layer was constructed by spray pyrolysis and additional carbon coating in-situ growth. In the process of high-temperature calcination, the carbon and nitrogen layers between the shells separate, creating additional space, while the Co3O4 particles between the shells remain are still in close contact to form continuous and fast electron conduction channels, which can realize better charge transfer. Due to the synergy of these design principles, the material has ultra-high initial discharge capacities of 2,183.1 mAh·g−1 at 0.2 A·g−1 with capacity of 1,121.36 mAh·g−1 after 250 cycles, the long-term capacities retention rate is about 92.4% after 700 cycles at 1 A·g−1. This unique channel-type double-shell structure fights a way out to prepare novel electrode materials with high performance.

Abstract:Designing the highly catalytic activity and durable bifunctional catalysts towards oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is paramount for metal–air batteries. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-based materials have attracted a great deal of attention as the potential candidate for effectively catalyzing ORR/OER due to their adjustable composition and porous structure. Herein, we first introduce the Mn species into zeolitic-imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) and then further pyrolyze the Mn-containing bimetallic ZIFs to synthesize core-shell-structured 4N nanoparticles embedded into MnO-modified porous N-doped carbon nanocubes (4N/MnO-NC). 4N/MnO-NC exhibits the outstanding catalytic activity towards ORR and OER which is attributed to its abundant pyridinic/graphitic N and Co4N, the optimized content of MnO species, highly dispersed catalytic sites and porous carbon matrix. As a result, the 4N/MnO-NC-based Zn–air battery exhibits enhanced performances, including the high discharge capacity (762 mAh gZn−1), large power density (200.5 mW cm−2), stable potential profile over 72 h, low overpotential (<1.0 V) and superior cycling life (2800 cycles). Moreover, the belt-shaped 4N/MnO-NC cathode-based Zn–air batteries are also designed which exhibit the superb electrochemical properties at different bending/twisting conditions.

Abstract:In this work, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were used as precursors to prepare Zn/Co oxide with a porous dodecahedral core-shell structure. Herein, a low-temperature self-assembly calcination and hydrothermal strategy of imidazole-based Zn-Co-MOF was used. As anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), ZnO/Co3O4 has good cycling stability, the specific discharge capacity of ZnO/Co3O4 is stable at about 640 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles, and its coulombic efficiency (CE) is stable above 95% after the first 20 cycles. When the current density is 0.6 A/g, the discharge capacity is 420 mAh g−1. This excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to its unique porous hollow structure and unique heterojunction electrode interface, which improves the Li+ storage capacity, increases the contact area between the electrode and the electrolyte, and improves the overall electrochemical activity. In addition, the synergistic effect of ZnO and Co3O4 also plays an important role in improving the electrochemical performance.
