Abstract:A Li2TiO3 modified LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode material is prepared by a novel coating method of Li2TiO3 nanoparticles. Compared with a coated material prepared by synchronous lithiation, this coated material shows an unchanged LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 bulk structure and a dramatically reduced lithium residue amount on the surface. As a result, the electrochemical performance of this coated material is improved markedly, especially for the cycling stability at an elevated temperature (60 degrees C), at which the capacity retention after 200 cycles at a rate of 1 C is 91.32%. The performance enhancement for this coated material can be mainly contributed to the less formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and a lower degree of structural changes during cycling. Abstract:A convenient, economical strategy of the "dipping-grinding-sliming"process followed by solid phase sintering was used for surface modification of Li-rich layered cathode materials Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2. The experimental results expressed that compared with pristine material, the surface-modified cathode material exhibited satisfactory cyclic stability. It had an initial capacity of more than 280 mAh center dot g(-1). After 70 charging-discharging cycles at 0.5C, it had capacity retention of 91.6%.

Abstract:Materials of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 coated with different amounts of Li+-conductive Li2SiO3 (1.5, 3.0, 4.5 wt%) were synthesized through an isochronous lithium source method. The structures and morphologies of all samples exhibited no apparent changes after being coated with Li2SiO3. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the initial Coulombic efficiency, cycle capacity retention and rate performance were improved. Especially for the 3 wt% Li2SiO3-coated sample, its initial Coulombic efficiency was increased by 5.2% (81.3%) compared with the pristine state (76.1%). After 100 cycles at 1 C, it maintained a discharge capacity of 142 mAh g(-1) with the retention of 85.1%, which is much better than the bare Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 (121.9 mAh g(-1) and 77.5%). In addition, the rate performance was also greatly enhanced under high current density. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) suggested that the enhanced electrochemical performance mainly benefited from the protective function of the coating layer of Li2SiO3 and its three-dimensional path for Li+ transmission in the structure, which would stabilizes the structure and accelerates the rate of Li+ migration respectively. Abstract:Layered transition-metal oxides have served as the mainstream cathode materials for high-energy batteries due to their large theoretical capacity (≈280mAh/g),However, the actual usable capacity is much lower than the promised theoretical value. Additional, poor cycling performance and the first-cycle Coulombic efficiency, for which Mn(II)-dissolution, its immobilization in solid electrolyte interface (SEI), oxidation of electrolytes by Ni, and other parasitic process thereat have been held responsible, weight against their applications.. Here we report a significant enhancement of cathode capacity utilization through a novel concept of material design. By embedding Li(Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3)O2 in single wall carbon nanotube (CNT) network, a high charge/discharge reversible capacity up to about 250 mAh/g was obtained between 3.0-4.8V. Furthermore, to maintain this high capacity in long-term cycling, we proposes a unique “pre-lithiation process”, which brought the cathode to low potentials before regular cycling and led to an interphase that is normally formed only on anode surfaces. The complete coverage of cathode surface by this ~40 nm-thick interphase effectively prevented Mn(II) dissolution and minimized the side reactions of Ni, Co and Mn at the NMC interface during the subsequent cycling process. More importantly, such “pre-lithiation” process activated a structure containing two Li layers near the surface of NMC532 particles, as verified by XRD and first principle calculation. Hence, a new cathode material of both high capacity with depolarized structure; and excellent cycling performance was generated.

Abstract:Ni-rich layered metal oxide of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM) is a promising cathode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The fast capacity fading caused by interfacial instability, bulk structural degradation and side reactions on electrode/electrolyte interface during cycling hampers its larger scale commercial applications. In this work, a combined modification strategy was implemented by coating with Li2TiO3 on particle surface and doping with PO4 3− polyanion in bulk of the NCM cathode material. The large tetrahedral PO4 3− polyanions doped into lattice structure suppresses cationic mixing and structure degradation, while the Li2TiO3 coating layer protects the particle surface and restrains side reactions. The co-modification strengthens overall structure stability for an excellent cycling performance. Moreover, the thin layered Li2TiO3 coating material with three-dimensional channels for ion transport and the enlarged interlayer spacing by PO4 3−-doping enhance capacity and facilitate Li+ ions diffusing. These factors result in a superior rate capability. With the collaborative cooperation of Li2TiO3 coating and PO4 3− doping, the sample with 1 mol% coating and 0.03 mol% doping content delivers a reversible specific capacity of 167.2 mAh g−1 at 5C and 157.8 mAh g−1 at 10C, remains a capacity of 147.7 mAh g−1 at 1C after a long term 800 cycles with a retention of 77.4% at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V.

Abstract:The layered Li-rich Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 cathode material is successfully synthesized via an optimized sol–gel method. With oxalic acid instead of citric acid as the chelating agent, the amount of chelating agent used in this experiment is only 36% of the traditional weight. Segmented sintering method is adopted to decrease the calcination temperature and reduce the calcination time. X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to characterize the structure and micromorphology of the material. Meanwhile, charge–discharge test, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are employed to explore its electrochemical performance. Our results demonstrate that Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 277.3mAhg−1 and keeps excellent capacity retention of 98.4% after 50 cycles when tested at a 0.1C rate within the potential range of 2.0–4.8V at room temperature.

Abstract:Lithium rich manganese-based layered material is a promising high-capacity cathode candidate for lithium ion batteries, but it usually exhibits poor cycling stability and low safety because of the issues of oxygen ions unstability under high voltage. A strategy to promote the electrode performance of lithium rich manganese-based layered material through incorporation of boracic polyanion has been developed. As-synthesized Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54](BO4)0.015(BO3)0.005O1.925 showed superior reversible capacity of 300 mAh/g after 80 cycles, excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 89% within 300 cycles, higher thermal stability and enhanced redox couple potentials in comparison with pristine Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54]O2 when used as an cathode material for lithium ion batteries, which can be attributed to the tuned electronic structure after the incorporation. This facile enhanced strategy is expected to be extended to other high capacity electrode systems.

Abstract:A polyaniline (PANI)-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material has been synthesized by a solution method to avoid lithium discharge and structural damage to the coating of active materials. The results of x-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy illustrate that PANI has been successfully coated onto the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode materials. PANI coating can effectively inhibit cationic mixing and reduce the content of surface residual alkali. This coating can also optimize interfacial electrochemical reactions, thereby improving the stability and security of cathode materials. Electrochemical results show that 3 wt.% PANI-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 193.8 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 96.25% after 80 cycles at the current rate of 1 C and an initial discharge specific capacity of 162.6 mAh g−1 with capacity retention of 83.02% at 5 C. The rate capability of PANI-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 improves remarkably at high rates (1 C, 2 C, and 5 C). The PANI-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 has significant practical applications for power batteries due to its excellent stability, long cycle ability, and high rate performance.

Abstract:Li-rich layered cathode material Li[Li0.2Ni0.2Mn0.6]O-2 was modified by manganese oxide coating via a simple deposition and heat-treatment process. The HRTEM images and the XPS analysis demonstrated that the surface of Li[Li0.2Ni0.2Mn0.6]O-2 was covered by continuous manganese oxide layer, with about 10 nm thickness. The electrochemical performance is improved greatly, especially the rate capability. The composite coated with 4 wt % manganese oxide showed high reversible capacity of 210 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles at 2 C (400 mA g(-1)), compared with 77 mAh g(-1) of the pristine. It is believed that surface modification of Li[Li0.2Ni0.2Mn0.6]O-2 with manganese oxide coating exhibits a convenient approach for a large-scale production. (C) 2010 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:LiNi0·8Co0·1Mn0·1O2 has become a promising candidate as a cathode material of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high specific capacity, while the poor cycling and rate performances limit its commercial application. Herein, a thin layer of Li5AlO4 was in situ formed on the surface of LiNi0·8Co0·1Mn0·1O2 through a slow deposition process assisted by NaHCO3 and solid phase co-lithiation sintering. By employing the optimal amount (3 wt %) of Li5AlO4 coating on LiNi0·8Co0·1Mn0·1O2 cathode material (denoted as 3-NCM), the capacity retention rate of 3-NCM after 100 cycles increased from 75.06% to 89.15% at 2.8–4.3 V, and it also shows the most significantly enhanced rate performance. The outstanding electrochemical performance can be attributed to that the Li5AlO4 coating can impede the contact between the active materials and electrolyte, stabilize the material structure and inhibit the dissolution of transition metals during repeated charge–discharge cycles. And the superior conductivity of Li5AlO4 can improve the lithium ion diffusion rate. All these results connote that Li5AlO4-coated LiNi0·8Co0·1Mn0·1O2 cathode material might be employed in advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The high nickel cathode LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2 (combination of NCM and NCA) coated with the Li+ conductor Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 in various mass fractions was prepared via using the typical sol-gel process. The LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2 after the Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 covering demonstrated the similar crystal structure and particle morphology in comparison with the bare cathode. The electrochemical test results indicated the superior rate capabilities and cycling performances were acquired for the coated cathodes due to the presence of the Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 film on the surface of LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2. The 2 wt% Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 covered LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2 exhibited the greatest electrochemical performance with a large cycle retention rate of 90.9% over 300 cycles at 45 °C, rate capacity of 139.8 mAh g−1 at 5 C current density, and a high capability of 126.5 mAh g−1 at − 30 °C, superior than those (80.9%, 99.8 mAh g−1, 71.3mAh g−1 accordingly) of the bare cathode. In addition, the safety and environmental reliability tests of pouch batteries suggested the Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 film on the surface of cathode acted as a protective layer to promote the stability for application.

Abstract:Layered Li[Li₀.₂Co₀.₁₃Ni₀.₁₃Mn₀.₅₄]O₂ nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple polymer-pyrolysis method and then coated with 3 wt% Al₂O₃ to form a ∼4 nm thick protective skin. The Al₂O₃-coated Li[Li₀.₂Co₀.₁₃Ni₀.₁₃Mn₀.₅₄]O₂ electrode demonstrates a high initial coulombic efficiency of 96.1%, a large reversible capacity of ∼311 mAh g⁻¹, and a good cyclability with 83.8% capacity retention after 70 cycles. Particularly, this material can deliver a quite high capacity of ∼239 mAh g⁻¹ at a high rate of 400 mA g⁻¹. This superior electrochemical performance results from the well-crystallized nanocores and effective surface modification of the material. The former provides a short diffusion path and fast transport channels for lithium ion insertion/extraction reactions and the latter restrains the elimination of oxide ion vacancies and metal ion rearrangement during charge–discharge cycling. Due to their simplicity and applicability, the synthetic method along with the surface modification technique is easily adopted to make high performance xLi₂MnO₃·(1 − x)LiMO₂ materials for practical battery applications.
In-situ Formation of Hybrid Li3PO4-AlPO4-Al(PO3)3 Coating Layer on LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode with Enhanced Electrochemical Properties for Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Irreversible phase transition and surface residual lithium, which cause the fast capacity fading of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811), are the main obstacles that hinder their commercial application. Herein, to modify the surface/interphase properties of NCM811, we elaborately propose a hybrid Li3PO4-AlPO4-Al(PO3)(3) coating layer that combines the advantages of ionic conductor (Li3PO4) and thermal stable compound (AlPO4) via reacting aluminum metaphosphate (Al (PO3)(3)) precursor with the surface residual lithium (Li2CO3 or/and LiOH) during the coating process. When used as cathode for lithium-ion battery, the optimized NCM811 delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 201.8 mAh g(-1) and 218.9 mAh g(-1) at 0.1C under the temperature of 30 degrees C and 50 degrees C, with capacity retention of 85.4% and 78.89% after 50 cycles, respectively, which are much higher than that of uncoated sample (73.93% and 57.98%). Moreover, when it is coupled with graphite anode to form a lithium-ion full cell, it delivers an impressively high energy density of 467.5 Wh kg(-1) (based on mass of positive and negative material), and retains 71.8% of its initial energy density after 100 cycles. The significantly enhanced electrochemical properties should be attributed to the multifunctional hybrid nano-coating layer that could efficiently reduce the surface residual lithium, suppress the irreversible phase transition, and prevent the active materials from the erosion of HF as verified by the ex-situ X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. This work provides new insights into the surface/interphase design strategies to improve the structural stability of Ni-rich cathode, which will promote the development of high capacity cathode materials.

Abstract:Layered Li[Li 0.20 Mn 0.534 Ni 0.133 Co 0.133 ]O 2 cathode materials for Li-ion battery were successfully prepared by a novel simple solid-state method using acetate or carbonate as a precursor under high temperature, and were then surface-modified with nanostructured alumina (Al 2 O 3 ). The prepared cathode materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and electrochemical measurements. The XRD results show that all the cathode materials possess an α-NaFeO 2 structure type with high crystallinity. SEM and TEM images reveal that the cathode materials have a monodisperse nonspherical morphology and the surface became rough but their morphology did not change very much after Al 2 O 3 coating. XRF test proved the presence of Al 2 O 3 in the samples after coating treatment. The electrochemical measurements exhibit that the Al 2 O 3 -coated cathode materials have a higher capability and cycling performance in lithium-ion battery than that of uncoated samples. Further, electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) measurement shows that the Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles on the surface of the cathode materials reduced side reactions during cycling electrode/electrolyte interface and provided a balanced electronic and Li-ion conductivity. This promising technology for making high performance electrodes would inspire the design and development of a wide range of other battery-related materials in a more eco-friendly way.

Abstract:In the current field of lithium battery energy storage, some commonly used cathode materials have been unable to meet some large-scale intelligent energy storage equipment. Layered lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials have great development potential due to their high capacity and high operating voltage. However, it currently has fast capacity decay and poor rate performance, because the layered structure of the material can easily collapse during the cycle. To solve this problem, we modified the surface of the material with Al2O3 coating. The results show that the performance of modified material is significantly improved because of the reduction in corrosion on the electrode. The electrochemical performance has also been improved in the full-cell system. Moreover, the pouch cell of modified electrode has also been measured, but the device is not affected under different bending states, indicating that the modified electrode presents a promising application in the field of flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Li-rich, manganese-based cathode materials are attractive candidates for Li-ion batteries because of their excellent capacity, but poor rate and cycle performance have limited their commercial applications. Herein, Li-rich, manganese-based cathode materials were modified with aluminum isopropoxide as an aluminum source modifier using a sol–gel technique followed by a wet chemical method. To investigate the structure, morphology, electronic state, and elemental composition of both pristine- and surface-modified Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2, various characterizations were performed. Based on density functional theory simulations and the results of electrochemical tests, the surface of the modified cathode material was found to contain at least part of the LiAlO2 phase. This was attributed to the aluminum isopropoxide reacting with a Li2CO3/LiOH byproduct on the material surface to form LiAlO2 with a three-dimensional Li-ion channel structure. Electrochemical testing revealed that a 3 wt % aluminum isopropoxide coating of cathode materials exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the initial Coulombic efficiency and discharge capacity at 0.1 C were up to 88.55% and 272.7 mAh g–1, respectively. A final discharge capacity of 186.4 mAh g–1 was achieved, corresponding to a capacity retention of 83.55% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C. Abstract:High capacity Li- and Mn-rich layered oxides are of particular interest as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, but large initial irreversible capacity, inferior poor cycle stability and rate capability greatly limited large-scale commercial application. In this work, we propose an effective strategy via surface modification of Co3O4 on surface of Li[Li0.2Mn0.534Co0.133Ni0.133]O-2 (LMCNO) to improve the electrochemical performance. In comparison with pristine LMCNO, all the Co3O4 -modified LMCNO composites show higher capacity, better cycling stability and rate capability. Among them, 1.5 wt% Co3O4-modified LMCNO shows high initial capacity of 253.3 mA hg(-1), good capacity retention of 73.3% after 80 cycles at 0.2C and much improved rate capability especially at high rates. The enhanced electrochemical properties can be attributed to protecting LMCNO bulk materials from the electrolyte attack by Co(3)O(4 )surface layer as well as its high ionic/electronic conductivity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that the Co3O4-modified LMCNO sample shows much smaller charge transfer resistance than pristine sample. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A Facile Technique Towards the Fabricate Carbon Modified Cathode for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:While the carbon coating layer can improve the electrode-electrolyte interface, it is widely used in lithium ion battery modification, the coating procedure remain complex. In this case, a simple solvent method is proposed to fabricate carbon modified LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811). The TEM and HRTEM photos reveal that the carbon layer is amorphous and uniformly distributed on the surface of the NCM particles. As cathode materials for lithium ion batteries, the C@NCM delivers an appealing initial reversible capacity of 198 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C (1 C = 180 mA g−1), superior capacity retention of 95.2% after 200 cycles (25 °C) at 1 C, 89.6% after 300 cycles at 2 C, good cycle stability at 60 °C and excellent rate capability of 148 mAh g−1 at 10 C. Such enhanced electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the smaller electrode polarization and lower charge transfer resistance after carbon coated.

Abstract:Ni-rich cathode materials have attracted much attention due to the high energy density and low cost. However, the poor cycling performance and low rate capacity have produced a serious impact on the practical commercial application. In this work, the B 3+ incorporation and polypyrrole coating were both applied to enhance the electrochemical properties of LiNi 0.85 Co 0.05 Mn 0.10 O 2 by using the co-precipitation process followed by a chemical vapor phase polymerization way. Herein, the B 3+ incorporation into crystal structure could enlarge the lattice spacing, contributing to accelerating the Li + insertion/extraction speed and enhancing the structural stability during cycling. The polypyrrole surface coating played a great effect on preventing cathode surface from the electrolyte erosion owing to a shield of polypyrrole. As a result, a maximum discharge capacity of 129.8 mAh g −1 at 5 C high rate and prominently enhanced cycling performance with capacity retention of 90.1% after 300 cycles were acquired for the Polypyrrole coated LiNi 0.835 Co 0.05 Mn 0.10 B 0.015 O 2 . By comparison, the pristine LNCMO cathode demonstrated a fast decaying capacity and delivered a capacity retention of only 81.9%.
