Abstract:In this work, two off-axis reflective dual-channel zoom optical systems are conceived and designed. These two systems achieve good imaging quality and compact system volume by introducing freeform surfaces. Firstly, the system models of the off-axis reflective dual-channel zoom optical systems are introduced, and the first-order analysis is carried out. Then, a design method of an off-axis reflective dual-channel zoom freeform optical system is introduced, and two examples are designed using this method. In one example, the two channels have a separate primary mirror and share a secondary mirror and a third mirror. The system achieves a zoom ratio of 2 times. The two different channels of the other system have separate third mirror and share the primary mirror and the secondary mirror. The system achieves a zoom ratio of 4 times. The two systems have good imaging performance close to the diffraction limit in the visible light band. Finally, the proposed off-axis reflective dual-channel zoom freeform optical system is analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, an off-axis reflective projection lens with single Fresnel reflective surface and three aspheric surfaces were designed. The design method of reflective lens using spherical Fresnel surface is discussed. The MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) of the off-axis reflective lens, with optical magnification 100×, F-number 2.5 and field of view 120°, is over 40% at 0.6lp/mm on the image side, the distortion is less than 2%. This design method can provide reference for application of Fresnel surface in wide field of view imaging, and possesses a bright future with the continuous development of fabrication technique.

Abstract:Freeform optics constitutes a new technology that is currently driving substantial changes in beam shaping. Most of the current beam shaping systems are elaborately tailored for fixed optical properties, which means the output light distribution of a beam shaping system usually cannot be changed. What we present here is a class of beam shaping systems, the optical properties of which can be changed to meet the requirements for different applications. The proposed beam shaping system is composed of a freeform lens and a non-classical zoom system which is designed by ray aiming and the conservation of energy instead of aberration control. The freeform lens includes two elaborately designed freeform optical surfaces, by which both the intensity distribution and wave-front of an incident light beam are manipulated in a desired manner. The light beam after propagating through the non-classical zoom system produces an illumination pattern on a fixed observation plane with a variable pattern size and an unchanged irradiance distribution at different zoom positions. Two design examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beam shaping systems.

Abstract:In order to study the problem that free form surfaces are hard to be applied in the design of image system,an off-axis reflective lens composed with Zernike polynomials free form mirrors was designed by the wave-front analysis for Zernike polynomials free form surfaces.Based on the analysis of aspheric off-axis lens,Zernike polynomials was used to describe the free form shape mirror,and the aberration which was analyzed to match with Seidel aberration was used to design the free form reflective lens.A reflective projection lens was constructed with three Zernike polynomials free form shape mirrors,with layout of "concave-convex-convex",and the lens was telecentric in object space.Furthermore,the lens's performance was analyzed,under the condition of relative aperture of 2.5 and angle of view of 130°, the module transfer function(MTF) was over 60% at 100 lp/mm on magnification side,and the distortion was less than 2%.Design result showed that using Zernike polynomials free form surface can dramatically decrease the aberration of off-axis lens,simplify the configuration and increase the definition of image system.

Abstract:A new optical design of triple-waveband hybrid imaging system over the visible,MWIR and LWIR wavebands by combining reflective,refractive and harmonic diffractive elements was presented in this paper.The primary mirror of Cassegrain configuration was used as optical aperture for non chromatic and light weight,and the second mirror separates the IR bands transmitted and the visible band reflected.Using harmonic DOE and Schupmann configuration,the chromatic aberration of both IR bands was corrected by single material-Germanium.With secondary imaging form,the cold stop efficiency of IR bands was 100%.The triple-waveband lens system is powerful in providing diffractive-limited performance on light and compact configuration.

Abstract:This paper proposes a type of off-axis zoom optical system, achieving zoom through the rotation of one mirror. These systems have two different operating states, where one state has a shorter focal length and a larger field of view, and the other with the opposite. Switching between the two states is accomplished by simply rotating one mirror by a small angle. In contrast to the traditional method of simultaneously controlling the axial translation and rotation of the mirrors to achieve zoom, these systems only require a small rotation of the third mirror to achieve zoom, which is advantageous for reducing the system's control difficulty. In addition, a method for the design of this type of system is presented and used to design an off-axis zoom imaging optical system incorporating three freeform mirrors. The system has an entrance pupil diameter of 20 mm, a focal length of 200 mm in the long focal state, a focal length of 100 mm in the short focal state, and a zoom ratio of 2 times. The system requires only a 2.93 degrees rotation of the third mirror to switch between the two states. The final system illustrates excellent imaging performance close to the diffraction limit in the visible light wavelength range.

Abstract:The finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method was used to simulate the propagation of P polarized light Gaussian beam in a single subwavelength metallic(Ag)slit surrounded by gratings.Because of the effect of surface plasmons wave,slit with symmetric grating can realize symmetric diffraction,and special asymmetric structure can achieve off-angle beaming phenomenon.Through formula Derivation and Helmholtz reciprocity theorem,devices for parallel beam of P polarized light could be designed.With the Gaussian beam's divergence and near-field distribution,the structural parameters of devices for Gaussian beam shrinks by 12%.On the basis of optimizating some other structures parameters,the design of symmetric diffracted and off-angle beaming effect device for 633 nm Gaussian beam were achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, a construction method through forward and reverse ray tracing for a design of ultra-wide linear field-of-view (FOV) off-axis freeform systems is proposed. The freeform initial system is numerically constructed by a point-by-point calculation. This method begins with a spherical system solved by the paraxial optical theory. In this method, the primary mirror is calculated through the reverse ray tracing; hence, the size and position of the aperture stop is not affected by the changes of mirrors. The fields in the reverse system are selected to cause certain beam overlaps on the primary mirror between adjacent fields. These overlaps offer a more uniform distribution of data points, improving the calculation of this mirror. As an example, an off-axis freeform system with an ultra-wide linear field-of-view of 70 degrees is designed by this method. The effective focal length of the system is 75 mm, and the F-number is 5.8. The diffraction-limited performance of this freeform system in the visible band and the near infrared and near ultraviolet bands validate the construction method presented in this paper.

Abstract:The traditional method of designing the initial configuration of off-axis reflective optical system is to first obtain the initial configuration of coaxial reflective optical system, and then achieve the unobscured design with an offset aperture stop or a biased input field, or both. Because the aberration distribution of coaxial reflective optical system is not applicable to the off-axis reflective optical system, the obtained unobscured off-axis reflective optical system has large aberration, and the unobscured design process is complicated. In this paper we present a method of designing an initial configuration of off-axis reflective optical system based on vector aberration theory. With this design method, a good unobscured initial configuration of off-axis reflective optical system can be directly obtained by using an offset aperture stop or a biased input field, or both. Based on the vector aberration theory and gaussian brackets, the third-order aberration coefficient is derived for off-axis reflective optical system. Initial configuration performance is important for optical design, especially for the complicated optical system design. The selection of initial configuration highly affects the final system imaging performance, fabrication difficulty and alignment difficulty. An error function is established to evaluate the performance of off-axis reflective optical system, and it consists of aberration coefficients and other constraints. The genetic algorithm is a highly parallel, random and adaptive global optimization algorithm. To obtain a good initial configuration for the off-axis reflective optical system, the genetic algorithm is used to search for the initial configuration with minimum residual aberration. This method can obtain a good initial configuration of off-axis reflective optical system for further optimization. The benefit of this design method is demonstrated by designing an off-axis three-mirror optical system. For the focal plane array, a long-wave infrared off-axis three-mirror optical system is designed. A good initial configuration is obtained with the proposed method, which achieves the unobscured design by using an offset aperture stop and a biased input field. To improve the performance of initial configuration, the obtained initial configuration is optimized with the optical design software. The designed optical system has good imaging quality. As the mirrors are free from the tilts and decenters, the designed optical system is aligned easily.

Abstract:In the field of space optics which is closely related to aeronautics and astronautics, off-axis reflective imaging systems are attracting more and more researchers’ attention due to their various advantages. Compared with traditional spheres and aspheres, freeform surfaces have higher degrees of design freedom, and are capable of correct a variety of asymmetric aberrations. Therefore, freeform surfaces have full capability of designing the off-axis reflective imaging systems, and furthermore they have the potential to meet some high-end or special requirements in space optics. Improving optical performance and realizing special structure are two main application directions of freeform surfaces in space optics. In this paper, following the two directions and aiming at some real requirements of space optical imaging systems, including low F-number, wide field-of-view, compact structure, having a real exit pupil and afocal system, the authors have selected several representative freeform off-axis reflective imaging systems, and emphatically introduced their system configurations, optical performance, and application advantages in space optics.

Abstract:A data point calculation method that does not require the use of Fermat's principle and a simple and general design method of starting points of freeform off-axis multi-mirror optical systems are proposed in this paper, which aim to promote the realization of high-performance reflective systems containing freeform surfaces. Taking a planar system and the required parameters as the input, a good starting point for a freeform off-axis multi-mirror system can be automatically obtained using the proposed method. The design of a freeform off-axis five-mirror system with a low F-number is taken as an example to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The method can also be used for the design of freeform reflective systems with other numbers of mirrors.

Abstract:Traditional optical design processes can only obtain a few design solutions after a time‐consuming trial‐and‐error process. During this process, how to select the numbers and sequence of surfaces of different types (spherical, aspherical, and freeform) required by the system remains a difficult problem. Currently, no automatic design method is available for reflective optical systems that contain multiple surface types. Therefore, an automatic design framework for reflective systems is proposed that can output a series of design results with various combinations of surface types automatically after input specifications and constraints. In the first design example, 76 design results with imaging qualities near the diffraction limit are obtained that have 11 different surface type combinations. This framework realizes the automatic design of this type of system, paving the way toward general automatic optical design and significantly improving the efficiency of the optical design process. Using this framework, the numbers and sequence of the surfaces of different types required by the optical system can be determined reasonably, solving a difficult problem that has long puzzled designers. The proposed framework reduces the requirement for design experience and allows more people to participate in optical design processes.

Abstract:Design of an optical system, whether classic or novel, in the past or the present, requires significant effort from the designer. In addition to design methods and theories, the designer's skills and experience in optical system design are particularly important, which may require years of practice to learn. The diversity and variety of results are limited because of the difficulty, time, and labor costs required. In this article, we propose an automatic design method for freeform optics that can achieve a diverse range of three-mirror designs. The optical specifications and the design constraints are the only inputs required, and a variety of results can be obtained automatically. The output results have various structures and various optical power distributions with high imaging qualities. By implementing the design method, designers can not only realize an overview of the solution space of the three-mirror freeform system, but can also focus on specific designs.

Abstract:With the development of optical machining and testing, the gap between freeform surface fabrication and design has been filled. Based on the freeform surfaces’ extraordinary feature for balancing asymmetric aberration and compressing system volume, an volume-compression optical design method for off-axis, three-mirror system is presented. Based on the guide of Nodal Aberration Theory for balancing asymmetric aberration, some optimization rules and tricks are shared during the optimization process. In the end, a highly-compact optical system with wide field of view, large entrance pupil and small F number is shown, the image quality is close to diffraction limit at Nyquist frequency.

Abstract:In this paper, mixed-surface-type optical system is defined as the optical system comprised of various types of surfaces, including spherical, aspheric, and freeform surfaces. A general point-by-point design method for mixed-surface-type systems is proposed. In detail, methods for spherical system design and optical power assignment are proposed during the point-by-point design process. Additionally, three surface evolutions are proposed: from spherical to aspheric surfaces and freeform surfaces, and from aspheric surfaces to freeform surfaces. A mixed-surface-type off-axis three-mirror system is designed as an example and as a starting point for further optimization. The sphere receives most of the system optical power while the freeform surface has little power, which can reduce system fabrication difficulty. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method is proposed to design a freeform off-axis three-mirror reflective imaging system. A special algorithm is demonstrated to calculate the data points on the unknown freeform surface using the rays from the pupil of the center field. Then the three-dimensional shape of the freeform surface is solved by these characteristic points, which serves as a good starting point for further optimization. The benefit of this design method is demonstrated by designing a freeform off-axis three mirror imaging system with high performance. The final system operates at F/2 with an entrance pupil diameter of 400 mm and a field of view of 2.4∘×2.4∘. The modulation transfer function (MTF) value of the system reaches 0.6 at 100 lp/mm or higher at all fields of view.

Abstract:Reflective imaging systems form an important part of photonic devices such as spectrometers, telescopes, augmented and virtual reality headsets or lithography platforms. Reflective optics provide unparalleled spectral performance and can be used to reduce overall volume and weight. So far, most reflective designs have focused on two or three reflections, while four-reflection freeform designs can deliver a higher light throughput (faster F-number) as well as a larger field-of-view (FOV). However, advanced optical design strategies for four-reflection freeform systems have been rarely reported in literature. This is due to the increased complexity in solution space but also the fact that additional mirrors hinder a cost-effective realization (manufacture, alignment, etc.). Recently, we have proposed a novel design method to directly calculate the freeform surface coefficients while merely knowing the mirror positions and tilts. Consequently, this method allows laymen with basic optical design knowledge to calculate 'first time right' freeform imaging systems in a matter of minutes. This contrasts with most common freeform design processes, which requires considerable experience, intuition or guesswork. Firstly, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for a four-mirror high-throughput telescope with 250mm-focal-length, F/2.5 and a wide rectangular FOV of 8.5° x 25.5°. In a subsequent step, we propose an effective three-mirror but four-reflection imaging system, which consists of two freeform mirrors and one double-reflection spherical mirror. Compared with common three-mirror and three-reflection imagers, our novel multi-reflection system shows unprecedented possibilities for an economic implementation while drastically reducing the overall volume.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2-D) quasi-optical systems have been widely applied. However, the analysis and design of 3-D systems still need to be further developed. In this letter, an approach to rapidly analyze the performance of 3-D multireflector systems based on Gaussian beam mode analysis is proposed. The influence of reflector parameters, such as input distance, incidence angle, and so on, on the co- and cross polarization is discussed. Furthermore, a novel design method of high-performance 3-D multireflector systems is proposed. High computational efficiency is one of the advantages of this method due to the application of particle swarm optimization algorithm. 3-D systems with low cross polarization or other electromagnetic properties can be designed rapidly by this novel method. The proposed methods greatly improve the calculation efficiency, while providing calculation accuracy similar to that of physical optics (PO) in GRASP10.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method is proposed to design the freeform off-axis reflective imaging systems. These points are used to construct the multiple three-dimensional freeform surfaces in an imaging system which works for a certain object size and a certain width of light beam. An unobscured design with freeform surfaces can be obtained directly with this method, and it can be taken as a good starting point for further optimization. The benefit of this design method is demonstrated by designing a freeform off-axis three-mirror imaging system with high performance and system specifications. The final system operates at F/1.49 with a 64mm entrance pupil diameter and an 8° × 9° field-of-view (FOV). The performance of the system is diffraction limited at LWIR (long-wavelength-infrared).
