AVOIDANCE OF CRACKING AT CONSTRUCTION JOINTS BETWEEN SOLID CONCRETE SECTIONS. COOLING FRESH CONCRETE WITH LIQUID NITROGEN

Abstract:Thermal analysis of solid concrete sections subjected to heat of hydration is now introduced as general practice in Danish civil engineering work. In the specifications control of temperature rise and distribution is required in order to avoid cracking at construction joints between solid concrete sections. Several means are known to modify the temperature behaviour, but the limits of application are very narrow. The article deals with introduction of a special hot joint and cooling of fresh concrete with liquid nitrogen. In some cases the liquid nitrogen method is the only applicable alternative. These entirely new techniques have been introduced on the execution of the concrete works at the Foroe Bridges in Denmark. (Author/TRRL)
