Abstract:In concrete technology, thermal cracking is a cause of major concern. Thermal cracking in mass concrete is related to both the rate of heat evolution and strength development at any time which are dependent on the historical time and temperature conditions at the particular point in the structure. In this research, reaction heat of concrete was determined with a developed cement hydration model. With the equivalent age method, accurate description of the strength growth of C40 concrete was presented. Then the thermal cracking analysis was carried out by means of the finite element program ANSYS. The analysis results were compared with the experiment results obtained in real practice. A good agreement has been noticed. This research will afford reliable support to design, construction and management of mass concrete structures in theory and practice.
Finite element analysis of temperature effect and crack-control measures for ultra-long concrete structures

Abstract:Temperature stress is the main problem faced by ultra-long concrete structure, how to accurately simulate the structural temperature effect and take effective measures to control the crack generation is the key to deal with this kind of problem. Based on the finite element analysis and practical engineering application of ultra-long concrete structures, the calculation method of structural temperature difference and the determination principle of key parameters were proposed, and a new method of crack-control was also introduced. The analysis shows that the finite element modeling can reveal temperature variation effect effectively and reasonably. The proposing floor elevation zone can weaken the impact of temperature stress, and avoid ultra-long concrete structure cracking.

Abstract:Cracking risk of concrete structure is analyzed through the calculation of inner stress of early age concrete structure. The hydration heat evolution model of concrete is established on the basis of Arrhenius law that is adopted in analyzing the influence of temperature on heat evolution rate of early-age concrete. The temperature field and thermal stress of concrete wall was calculated by the finite element method at early age. The modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of concrete containing equivalent age according to European committee for concrete-international federation for prestressing 1990 denoted that the mechanical properties of concrete develop with age. The Bazant's double-power law for creep in the stress analysis was used. The autogenous shrinkage of concrete was considered in the stress analysis. The results show that the hydration heat model of concrete is acceptable, and the hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage may make concrete wall crack at early age. The optimization of mix composition of concrete according the calculation of inner stress at early age may reduce the cracking risk of concrete structure.

Abstract:The heat released during cement hydration results in temperature-induced non-uniform volume changes in concrete structures. As a consequence, tensile thermal stresses of significant values may occur. The level of these stresses can be lowered by using various technological measures during the construction process and a proper concrete mix composition. Nevertheless, the application of an appropriate reinforcement is a reliable method for controlling the width and spacing of possible cracks. The rules for calculating this reinforcement are not precisely detailed in the standards devoted to concrete structures. Additionally, the correct calculation of the reinforcement requires the identification of the tensile stress distribution in a mass slab. The presented study provides insight into stress distribution and relevant reinforcement for controlling early-age cracks of thermal origin. The existing standards and guidelines are discussed and clarified. The possible paths for calculating the reinforcement are proposed through the example of mass foundation slabs with different levels of external restraints. The results indicate a significant impact of the calculation method as well as the restraint conditions of the slab on the area of required reinforcement.

Abstract:Based on the microstructure of concrete,the time dependent temperature behavior of normal and high-performance concrete during construction was investigated,along with the in-depth research on the continuously changing physical and mechanical properties of concrete at early age.Considering material and microstructure characteristics of concrete,the mechanism,analytical method and control of early age cracking of concrete structures were studied.A method to predict and control concrete cracking was proposed.The damage modeling of the crack propagation was established.Based on the theoretical and experiment research,the development of cement hydration,temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical and fracture properties of concrete at early age were systematically evaluated.With considering the influence of shrinkage,temperature,creep,ultimate tensile strain and elastic modulus on early age cracking of concrete,an incremental method was established to calculate the stress development in concrete structures.The analytical results agree well with both the laboratory test results and the observations from actual construction projects.The research results show that the analysis of early age cracking of concrete should be based on a dynamic and systematic investigation on the temperature,shrinkage,creep,mechanical properties and structure characteristics of concrete.The proposed early age cracking analysis model of concrete fits well with the experiment results.The application of theoretical model and numerical simulation can improve the efficiency and accuracy of analysis.

Abstract:An equivalent age method based on Arrhenius law was introduced to predict the development of concrete basic mechanic properties with temperature and age in order to analyze the concrete thermal stress and the concrete thermal cracking risk at early ages.A calculation equation of concrete temperature field was established based on the function of equivalent heat liberation rate.The concrete thermal cracking risk at early ages was evaluated based on calculation of concrete thermal stress using finite element theory and incremental method.Analysis shows that the equivalent age method can not only precisely predict the development of compressive and tensile strength with reference temperature and age but also can calculate and control the thermal cracking of concrete structures at early ages using finite element program ANSYS.

Abstract:The equivalent age method based on the Arrhenius law makes it possible to predict the concrete's compressive and tensile strength evolution at a reference constant temperature. Examples are mentioned in this paper. Determining whether the thermal cracks may develop is complicated by the fact that both the stress development and strength evolution are related to curing temperature and time. Noticed that the equivalent age is calculated by temperature and time, and this method can also be extended successfully to the concrete cracking control in structures through the use of the finite element program ANSYS.

Abstract:Thermal cracking of massive concrete structures occurs as a result of stresses caused by hydration in real environment conditions. The extended finite element method that combines thermal fields and creep is used in this study to analyze the thermal cracking of massive concrete structures. The temperature field is accurately simulated through an equivalent equation of heat conduction that considers the effect of a cooling pipe system. The time-dependent creep behavior of massive concrete is determined by the viscoelastic constitutive model with Prony series. Based on the degree of hydration, we consider the main properties related to cracking evolving with time. Numerical simulations of a real massive concrete structure are conducted. Results show that the developed method is efficient for numerical calculations of thermal cracks on massive concrete. Further analyses indicate that a cooling system and appropriate heat preservation measures can efficiently prevent the occurrence of thermal cracks.

Abstract:Thermal damage assessment of cementitious composites is essential for evaluating post-fire health conditions of the engineering structures, as well as the basis for reinforcement and repair after fires. Fibers and fly ash are widely used in cementitious composites due to their excellent properties. However, quantifying and predicting the thermal damage of hybrid fibers reinforced cementitious composites blended with fly ash at high temperatures is still inexplicit. Hence, this study aims to realize multiscale prediction of thermal damage for hybrid fibers reinforced cementitious composites blended with fly ash at high temperatures. First, the volumes of the phase compositions during hydration and dehydration are calculated by the hydration of cement and fly ash and the dehydration of hydration products. Then, a multiscale model is established to predict the thermal damage of hybrid fibers reinforced cementitious composites and verified by the experimental data. At last, the temperature field of tunnel lining structure in fires is obtained by numerical modeling and employing it to predict thermal damage at different thicknesses and moments. Results show that the heating rate determines the dehydration degree of hydration products and the volumes of the phase composites at high temperatures. The proposed multiscale model can reflect the thermal microcracking of cement paste, the interfacial thermal damage between aggregates and the cement paste, and the deterioration of elastic modulus of fibers. After three hours of exposure to fires, serious damage appears at the surface and the thickness of 2 cm and 5 cm of the lining, while there is nearly no damage at a thickness of 30 cm or more.

Abstract:Due to the intense exothermic hydration process, early-age concrete undergoes restrained shrinkage deformation, which can easily lead to cracks in concrete structures during construction. In order to accurately predict the adverse effects of early-age concrete cracking behavior, a cohesive element-based chemo-thermo-mechanical multi-field coupled cracking model of early-age concrete is proposed in this study. Parametric analysis shows that by selecting appropriate gap conductance, constitutive thickness, mesh size, and viscosity coefficient for the cohesive elements, the multi-field coupled cracking model can successfully simulate the entire cracking process of early-age concrete, and it has the ability to obtain crack development behavior based on the real displacement field jumps, coordinates, and damage of cohesive elements. The validation of the numerical examples reveals the competing mechanisms between thermal expansion and autogenous shrinkage in early-age concrete and accurately predicts the cracking strain, region, time, and width (within an order of magnitude) as reported in the literature.

Abstract:To perform the assessment of reinforced concrete infrastructures in service, a multi-scale simulation has been developed and improved with an integrated hygro-thermal-chemo-electrical-mechanistic approach. Various durability issues are successfully evaluated in terms of fatigue behaviours with damage induced by moisture motion through pores and cracks, temperature-related deterioration such as frost/fire damage, degradation by chemical reaction like alkali-silica reaction, and the macro-cell corrosion coupled with multi-ion equilibrium which is electro-chemical phenomenon. Moreover, the long-term performance evaluation influenced by the drying shrinkage is also successfully conducted. Furthermore, the multi-scale integrated approach is coupled with AI technique and data assimilation techniques. The crack locations and their widths are converted to space-averaged strains, which are built inside the cyber storage for the futural performance prediction. The hazard map of crack patterns on the surface of concrete deck is inversely derived from the artificial neural network, which is built according to the big dataset of the past maintenance records. Through both methods, the importance of using both-eye diagnosis is realized and proposed for lifetime assessment of structural concrete.

Abstract:The Annex D of the future EC2 draft gives guidance on the evaluation of early‐age cracking of large structures due to restraint. In case of restrained conditions, compressive stresses are firstly generated in massive structures due to temperature increase, then tensile stresses are generated due to temperature decrease and shrinkage. Due to these tensile stresses, there is a risk of cracking which may be evaluated by the simplified method in Annex D. This method is currently verified against laboratory tests performed in the temperature‐stress testing machine and field cases on restrained concrete elements. The laboratory verification consisted of five approaches to consider different available input (modeled, assumed, or measured). The field investigation focused on the relation between the calculated cracking risk and the observed damage. The results show that the method has very good accuracy and captures with reasonable simplicity the mechanisms and the relations between the parameters involved.

Abstract:Thermal deformation under restrained conditions often leads to early-age cracking and durability problems in mass concrete structures. It is crucial to monitor accurately the evolution of temperature and thermal stresses. In this paper, experimental studies using temperature stress testing machine (TSTM) are carried out to monitor the generated thermal cracking in mass concrete. Firstly, components and working principle of TSTM were introduced. Cracking temperatures and stress reserves are selected as the main cracking evaluation indicators of TSTM. Furthermore, effects of temperature controlling measures on concrete cracking were quantitatively studied, which consider the concrete placing temperature (before cooling) and cooling rates (after cooling). Moreover, the influence of reinforcement on early-age cracking has been quantitatively analyzed using the TSTM. The experimental results indicate that the crack probability of reinforced concrete (RC) is overestimated. Theoretical calculations proved that the internal stress can transfer from concrete to reinforcement due to creep effect. Finally, the experimental results indicate that the reinforcement can improve the crack resistance of concrete by nearly 30% in the TSTM tests, and the ultimate tensile strain of RC is approximately 105% higher than that of plain concrete with the same mix proportions.

Abstract:Cement-based materials encompass a broad spectrum of construction materials that utilize cement as the primary binding agent. Among these materials, concrete stands out as the most commonly employed. The cement, which is the principal constituent of these materials, undergoes a hydration reaction with water, playing a crucial role in the formation of the hardened composite. However, the exothermic nature of this reaction leads to significant temperature rise within the concrete elements, particularly during the early stages of hardening and in structures of substantial thickness. This temperature rise underscores the critical importance of predictive modeling in this domain. This paper presents a review of modeling approaches designed to predict temperature and accompanying moisture fields during concrete hardening, examining different levels of modeling accuracy and essential input parameters. While modern commercial finite element method (FEM) software programs are available for simulating thermal and moisture fields in concrete, they are accompanied by inherent limitations that engineers must know. The authors further evaluate effective commercial software tools tailored for predicting these effects, intending to provide construction engineers and stakeholders with guidance on managing temperature and moisture impacts in early-age concrete.

Abstract:A multi-scale micromechanical model is proposed to predict the damage degree of hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete under or after high temperatures. The thermal degradation of hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete is generally composed of the damage of the cement paste caused by thermal decomposition and thermal incompatibility, the deterioration of aggregates and fibers, and the interfacial damage between aggregates and the matrix. In this multi-scale model, four levels of hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete structures are considered when the thermal damage degree is derived; namely, the equivalent calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) product level, the cement paste level, the concrete level, and the hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete level. At the cement paste level, thermal decompositions of C–S–H product and calcium hydroxide are taken into account. In addition, a dimensionless parameter of the crack density is introduced to represent the thermal cracking of the matrix. At the concrete level, the interfacial damage of aggregates is simulated by a spring–interface model, in which the interfacial parameters are assumed to be functions of temperature. Moreover, at the cement paste level and the hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete level, a sub-stepping homogenization method is proposed to determine the effective properties. Comparisons between previously published experimental data and predictions and discussions illustrate the feasibility of the proposed multi-scale model in predicting thermal damage of concrete and hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete.

Abstract:From the field survey, thermal cracking frequently occurs in substructural concrete walls, although a high dosage of Calcium Sulfoaluminate (CSA) expansive additive is widely utilized. Conventional assessment methods fail to characterize the failure of CSA expansion under coupled realistic conditions. Therefore, an assessment scheme is proposed in this study: Firstly, mix proportions, temperature, restraint and curing conditions are used as input for a developed Temperature Stress Testing Machine (TSTM). By testing, limited expansions of CSA additive under low water-to-binder ratio, high temperature or drying condition, is unfolded. Corresponding countermeasures are also proposed. Secondly, long-span restraining frames are constructed to validate, and upscale findings from TSTM. Eventually, normal and optimized mixtures are applied and compared in real substructural walls. This combined scheme newly reveals that the lack of free water is the mechanism for CSA's stagnant expansion and a combination of CSA and lightweight aggregates shows promising potential as a countermeasure.

Abstract:To deal with the properties of early age concrete while allowing for the influence of curing temperature on the strength development rate and on ultimate mechanical behavior of concrete, the concept of “aging degree” is introduced. Using a mass concrete soleplate as an example, the thermal stress calculations in early age concrete with aging degree method are discussed using Finite Element method. To implement the aging degree method in finite element analysis, each element of the model must have different material properties that change at every load step, which is fulfilled in the analysis and the reason for no cracks in the mass concrete soleplate is explained.

Abstract:Early age behaviour of concrete is based on complex multi-physical and multiscale phenomena. The predication of both cracking risk and residual stresses in hardened concrete structures is still a challenging task. We propose in this paper a practical method to characterize in the construction site the material parameters and to identify a macroscopic model from simple tests. We propose for instance to use a restrained shrinkage ring test to identify a basic early age creep model based on a simple ageing visco-elastic Kelvin model. The strain data obtained from this test can be treated through an early age finite element incremental procedure such that the fitting parameters of the creep law can be quickly identified. The others properties of concrete have been measured at different ages (elastic properties, hydration kinetics, and coefficient of thermal expansion). From the identified early age model, we computed the temperature rise and the stress development in a non reinforced concrete stress for nuclear waste. The good agreement between in-situ measurement and predicted behaviour allowed us to validate our approach.
