Abstract:The electrochemical formation of Mg-Al-Y alloys was studied in the LiCl-NaCl-MgCl 2 melts by the addition of AlF 3 and YCl 3 on a molybdenum electrode at 973 K (700 °C). In order to reduce the volatilization of salt solvent in the electrolysis process, the volatile loss of LiCl-NaCl-MgCl 2 and LiCl-KCl-MgCl 2 melts was first measured in the temperature range from 873 K to 1023 K (600 °C to 750 °C). Then, the electrochemical behaviors of Mg(II), Al(III), Y(III) ions and alloy formation processes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry, and open circuit chronopotentiometry. The cyclic voltammograms indicate that the under-potential deposition of magnesium and yttrium on pre-deposited Al leads to formation of Mg-Al and Al-Y intermetallic compounds. The Mg-Al-Y alloys were prepared by galvanostatic electrolysis in the LiCl-NaCl-MgCl 2 -AlF 3 -YCl 3 melts and characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry. Composition of the alloys was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer, and current efficiency was also determined by the alloy composition.

Abstract:This work presents a study on electrochemical formation of Mg–Li alloys on solid magnesium electrode in a molten LiCl–KCl (50:50, wt.%) system at 753K. Cyclic voltammetry and open circuit chronopotentiometry were employed to investigate the electrode reaction. For an Mg electrode, the electroreduction of Li(I) takes place at more positive potential values than at the inert W electrode indicating the formation of Mg–Li alloys. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the deposits indicated that α, α+β and β phases Mg–Li alloys with the thickness of 182, 365 and 2140μm were obtained by potentiostatic electrolysis at −2.26, −2.30 and −2.39V (vs. Ag/AgCl), respectively. The results showed that formation of α, α+β and β phases Mg–Li alloys could be controlled by applied potential. Lithium contents of Mg–Li alloys can be decreased via electrolysis at low temperature followed by thermal treatment at higher temperature. Mg–Li alloys with excellent mechanical properties can be produced by this novel method.

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of Mg2+ and Al3+ in LiCl-KCl (mass 4: 1) melt at 973 K was studied on a Mo electrode systematically by cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. The results showed that the reductions of Mg2+ and Al3+were reversible processes controlled by the rate of the mass transfer. When Mg2+ and Al3+ coexisted in LiCl-KCl melt, they had no significant effect on the reduction potential of each other. The equilibrium potentials of Mg2+/Mg and Al3+/Al were obtained by open circuit potential method. Their apparent standard potentials were also calculated in this system and the values were −2.52 V vs Cl2/Cl−, −1.66 V vs Cl2/Cl−, respectively. Correspondingly, the apparent Gibbs free energies of Mg2+/Mg and Al3+/Al were −485.71 kJ/mol, −480.78 kJ/mol. Finally, potentiostatic electrolysis was performed on a Mo electrode in LiCl-KCl-MgCl2-AlCl3 (the mass ratio of MgCl2 to AlCl3 was 10:1) melt at different potentials. The <a href="http://dict.cnki.net/dict_result.aspx?searchword=%e7%bb%84%e5%88%86&tjType=sentence&style=&t=components">components</a> of the deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The study revealed that the content of Al in the deposit decreased as the overpotential increased and Al tended to segregate at the grain boundaries.

Abstract:Micro-alloying of rare earth elements in Mg alloys is an economical and promising way to improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. In this work, Mg-11Al-0.2Y alloy was prepared for investigation of its corrosion behavior in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The alloy is found to have very high corrosion resistance after immersion for 1 day due to formation of a protective surface film, which results in a corrosion current density of 2.3 μA/cm 2 . However, nano-scaled pores are observed at the film/matrix interface. The defects of the surface film undermine its integrity after long-term exposure in chloride solution.

Abstract:Magnesium‐lithium (MgLi) alloys have been widely used in various engineering fields due to their ultra-light characteristics. The strengthening of MgLi alloys is one of the key factors determining its application and has received extensive attention. In this work, the as-cast ultralight and high strength Mg-10Li-3Al-3Zn-xY (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0, wt%) alloys with a density of only 1.52 g/cm3 were prepared via vacuum induction melting. The effects of rare earth element yttrium (Y) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the MgLi alloy system were investigated. The results indicated that the microstructures of all the alloys mainly consisted of α-Mg, β-Li, AlLi, and MgLi2Al phases. The spherical AlLi phase was distributed inside the α-Mg and β-Li matrix. Part of the petal-like MgLi2Al phase was distributed in the interior of β-Li, and the rest grew along the grain boundaries as long strips. With the addition of Y, Al2Y phase formed with sharp edges and regular shapes. The Al2Y phase was mainly distributed inside the α-Mg phase and along the grain boundaries. Meanwhile, the amount of AlLi phase inside the α-Mg phase gradually decreased. The presence of nano-scale lath-shape MgLiZn phase in the β-Li matrix was observed in the HAADF map of the 0.5Y alloy. The continuous growth of MgLi2Al phase at the grain boundaries weakened its strength. As a consequence, it eventually led to intergranular fracture of the alloy. The 0.5Y alloy showed the highest tensile strength, up to ~244 MPa, and the yield strength was 60.5% higher than that of the 0Y alloy. Solid solution strengthening, precipitate strengthening and grain refinement were thus considered as the primary strengthening mechanisms caused by the addition of Y into the Mg-10Li-3Al-3Zn alloy.

Abstract:This work presents a novel study on electrochemical codeposition of Mg-Li alloys on molybdenum in KCl-LiCl (50:50wt%) melts containing different concentrations MgCl2 at 943 K. Cyclic voltammograms showed that the underpotential deposition (UPD) of lithium on pre-deposited magnesium leads to the formation of liquid Mg-Li alloys. The codepositon of Mg and Li happens when the current intensity exceeds 0.59 A cm(-2) in KCl-LiCl melts containing 5 wt % MgCl2. alpha, alpha + beta, and beta phases Mg-Li alloys with different lithium contents were obtained by galvanostatic electrolysis from KCl-LiCl melts with different concentrations MgCl2.

Abstract:In this study, a high-performance Mg–8Gd–2Y–1Zn–6Li (wt%) alloy having a TYS of 202 ± 2.6 MPa, UTS of 243 ± 2.1 MPa and EL of 10.7 ± 2.3% was successfully fabricated by casting, heat treatment and hot extrusion. The effects of intermetallic compounds on microstructure and mechanical properties were deeply investigated. The results show that the studied alloy consists of coarse deformed α-Mg grains with (0001) basal texture, fine recrystallized β-Li grains with (002) texture and three Mg3RE phase variants, which are bulk Mg3RE phase with a size range of 10–30 µm, spot Mg3RE phase with a size range of 1–2 µm and spherical Mg3RE phase with a size range of 0.3–1 µm, respectively. The spherical Mg3RE phase has a strong dispersion strengthening effect, while the bulk Mg3RE phase acts as crack resources and deteriorates the ductility. A novel island-like <math>β1R</math> phase (FCC, a = 0.78 nm) is found for the first time in the Mg-Gd-Li based alloys. It has a coherent <math>(1̅12)β1R</math>//<math>(101̅0)α</math> interface at the broad facet and a semi-coherent <math>(1̅11)β1R</math>//<math>(112̅0)α</math> interface at the end facet. The <math>β1R</math> phase transforms from <math>βH</math> phase at the semi-coherent interface by atomic shear of RE and Mg atoms. The <math>β1R</math> phase provides a significant precipitation strengthening effect to the studied alloy, while the dissolution of <math>β1R</math> phase results in the age-softening phenomenon. The high-performance of the studied alloy is mainly attributed to the α/β duplex structure, three Mg3RE phase variants, and <math>β1R</math> phase.

Abstract:Yttrium-doped Mg-Al layered double hydroxide films (MgAlY-LDHs) were firstly fabricated by a hydrothermal method on anodized AZ31 and Mg-Y alloys. The structure, morphology, and composition of MgAlY-LDHs were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), backscattered electron spectrometer (BSE), field-emission scanning electronic microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES), respectively. The electrochemical behavior was investigated using polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and immersion tests. The results indicated that the Y ions can be successfully intercalated in the MgAl-LDH lamella by isomorphous replacement, which can enhance corrosion protective performance and possess the self-healing ability of coatings. Furthermore, the in-situ growth of ternary LDHs film on high-strength Mg-rare earth (RE) alloys demonstrated the considerable potential of anti-corrosion protection for industrial application. The schematic representation of the growth mechanism and electrochemical behavior of MgAlY-LDHs nanosheet was put forward finally.

Abstract:Mg–Y thin films capped with Pd have been prepared by direct current magnetron co-sputtering system. It is found that Mg alloyed with Y in film state forms ultrafine nanocrystalline intermetallic compounds. The structure together with the catalytic effect of Y gives rise to a high electrochemical hydrogen storage capacities and superior activation properties. It is worthy to note that Mg78Y22 film achieves a high discharge capacity of 1590 mAh g−1 without requiring activation process. Moreover, Mg alloyed with Y effectively improves the cyclic stability of Mg-based films ascribing to the anti-corrosion role of Y. For Mg37Y63 film, more than 92％ of the maximum discharge capacity can be maintained after 100 charge–discharge cycles.

Abstract:The effects of 2-12 wt.% Y addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-Y binary alloys have been investigated. The results show that proper content of rare earth Y addition can obviously refine the grains and form high melting point Mg24Y5phases in the matrix, and improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys. At room temperature, the optimum combination of ultimate tensile strength and elongation, 195MPa and 7.5%, is obtained in Mg-10 wt.% Y alloy.

Abstract:In this study, effects of Al and Y contents on microstructural evolutions and mechanical properties of the as‐cast Mg–14Li alloy are investigated. The results show that Mg–14Li–xAl (x = 1, 2, 3 wt%) alloys are characterized by predominantly single β–Li and MgLiAl2 phases. Slight refinement of β–Li grains is obtained with the increasing of Al content. The increased Al addition greatly improves the hardness, ultimate tensile strength, and yield strength of the Mg‐14 base alloy, accompanied by a significant reduction in ductility. Meanwhile, with addition of minor Y (0.5 wt%) addition leads to the introduction of homogeneous distribution of Al2Y particles in the Mg–14Li–3Al alloy, which plays a positive role in the strength enhancement. However, the uneven distribution of apparently coarsed Al2Y particles contributes to a significant reduction in tensile strength as the Y content is increased up to 1 wt%.

Abstract:Thermodynamic and kinetic properties of Mg(II) in LiCl-KCl eutectic melt were investigated by electrochemical techniques. The diffusion coefficients of Mg(II) in the melt at various temperatures were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the activation energy of Mg(II)/Mg was calculated to be (48.5 ± 3.7) kJ mol −1 . The exchange current densities and reaction rate constants of Mg(II)/Mg at different temperatures from 773 K to 873 K were calculated by testing polarization curves on Mo electrode, and results showed that the exchange current densities became larger as the temperature increased. Equilibrium potentials of Mg(II)/Mg on Mo electrode and liquid Zn electrode were also tested by open circuit potential method. Subsequently, the apparent standard potential of Mg(II)/Mg, apparent standard Gibbs energy for the formation of MgCl 2 and activity coefficients of Mg in the liquid Zn were calculated. Finally, metallic Mg was extracted in the form of Zn-Mg alloys by galvanostatic electrolysis on liquid Zn electrode. The deposit was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Mg 2 Zn 11 was detected in the deposit.

Electrochemical Extraction of Samarium from LiCl-KCl Melt by Forming Sm-Zn Alloys

Abstract:The co-reduction of Sm(III) and Zn(II) ions on the Mo electrode and the under potential deposition of Sm(III) ions on the liquid Zn electrode were investigated in LiCl-KCl molten salt at 873K. Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry and open-circuit chronopotentiometry techniques were employed to study the electrochemical behaviors of Sm(III), Zn(II) and Sm-Zn alloy formation. The results showed that on the inert Mo electrode the electro-reduction of Sm(III) took place in only one soluble-soluble electrochemical step Sm(III)/Sm(II), and the electrochemical step Sm(II)/Sm(0) was not observed within the electrochemical window. In contrast, the deposition potential of Sm(II)/Sm(0) shifted to the positive direction by forming SmxZny intermetallic compounds in both the co-reduction and under potential deposition process. In the co-reduction process, the signals of forming six kinds of SmxZny intermetallic compounds were observed in the high ZnCl2 containing melt, and the formation of SmxZny at about -1.56V is dominant. In the under potential deposition process, the dominant deposition process is also at about -1.6V. The formation of Sm-Zn alloys were carried out by potentiostatic electrolysis on both the Mo electrode and liquid Zn electrode. All the Sm-Zn alloys were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). The XRD results showed that the SmxZny compound prepared on the Mo electrode in the high ZnCl2 containing melt was SmZn12, while the SmxZny compound prepared on the liquid Zn electrode was predominantly Sm2Zn17.
Improving the electrochemical behaviors and discharge performance of as-rolled Mg-4Li alloys through multicomponent alloying

Abstract:The effects of microalloying on the microstructure, electrochemical behavior and discharge properties of as-rolled Mg-4Li alloys are investigated. The addition of Al and Y elements result in the regulation of grain size and second phase, and a significant increase in corrosion resistance. Conversely, the Si element is detrimental to the corrosion resistance due to the more negative potential of the Mg2Si phase. The oxidation products mainly consist of Mg(OH)2 and Li2CO3, which effectively protect the substrate. The Mg2Si phase crack during the discharge process, effectively weakening the adsorption effect of the discharge product layer with the substrate and optimizing the material discharge activity. Compared with L4 (Mg-4Li) anode, LASW4310 (Mg-4Li-3Al-1Si-0.5Y) anode has a lower self-corrosion rate (15.71 mm/year). At the same time, LASW4310 anode has a high discharge capacity and anode efficiency of 1333 mAh.g−1 and 57.78%, and provides a specific energy of up to 1504 mWh.g−1. The refined microstructure and dense surface film can effectively slow down the corrosion and “chunk effect” of the substrate. The smooth discharge surface also facilitates the detachment of the discharge products from the substrate.

Effect of YAl₂ Particles on the Corrosion Behavior of Mg⁻Li Matrix Composite in NaCl Solution

Abstract:The strength of Mg⁻Li alloy is greatly improved by the composite strengthening of intermetallic compound YAl₂ particles, but the low corrosion resistance of Mg⁻Li alloy is still the main factor that restricts the application of the alloy and its composites. In this paper, the effect of YAl₂ particles on the corrosion behavior of Mg⁻Li alloy was systematically investigated. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of YAl2p/LA143 composite could be significantly improved, accounting for the formation of a transitional interface layer by adding YAl₂ particles. The diffusion of yttrium and aluminum atoms from YAl₂ particulates improved the stability of the surface film and enhanced the adhesion between the corrosion products and the substrate, which hindered further expansion of pitting.

Abstract:The design of new ultra-light Mg-Li alloys have great significance in aerospace and other fields. In this paper, Sn and Y elements were simultaneously added into Mg-8Li-3Al (wt.%) alloy and the effect of Y content on microstructure evolution and tensile properties of Mg-8Li-3Al-2Sn-xY (wt.%) alloys was studied. The as-cast Mg-8Li-3Al-2Sn alloy is composed of α-Mg+β-Li duplex-phase matrix, fine MgLiAl2 phase and coarse fishbone-like Li2MgSn phase. As Y element is added, granular Al2Y phase is formed, and grain size of α-Mg phase decreases significantly with shape changing from well-developed coarse dendritic to equiaxed dendritic. After hot extrusion, α-Mg phase is elongated along the extrusion direction, and β-Li phase undergoes complete dynamic recrystallization and transforms into fine equiaxed grains. The addition of 0.5% Y improves the tensile properties of as-cast Mg-8Li-3Al-2Sn-0.5Y alloy. However, the tensile properties show a downward trend with further increase of Y content. Hot extrusion significantly enhances the tensile properties of Mg-8Li-3Al-2Sn-xY alloys. Similarly, strength reaches the highest when the Y content is 0.5% for extruded Mg-8Li-3Al-2Sn-xY alloys.

Abstract:The microstructure and corrosion behavior of the as-homogenized and as-extruded Mg−xLi−3Al−2Zn−0.5Y alloys (x=4, 8, 12, wt.%) were studied. The results show that as the Li content increases from 4% to 12%, the matrix transfers from single α-Mg phase, (α-Mg+β-Li) dual phase to singleβ-Li phase. A mixed corrosion feature of intergranular corrosion and pitting corrosion occurs in the Mg−4Li−3Al−2Zn−0.5Y and Mg−12Li−3Al−2Zn−0.5Y alloys. The former is related to the precipitated AlLi phase along the grain boundaries, and the latter is related to the high potential difference between the second phase and the matrix. The corrosion resistance of the as-extruded alloys is better than that of the as-homogenized alloys. The superior corrosion resistance of the as-extruded Mg−8Li−3Al− 2Zn−0.5Y alloy with the lowest corrosion rate (P W=(0.63±0.26) mm/a) is attributed to the more uniform distribution of second phases, the protective α-Mg phase via sacrificing theβ-Li phase and the relatively integrated oxide film.

Abstract:Mg-Li alloys with the nominal composition Mg-10Li- x Al-3Zn-1Y ( x = 0 and 3) alloys were prepared by vacuum induction melting. Mg-10Li-3Zn-1Y alloy is mainly composed of α-Mg, β-Li, and Mg 24 Y 5 phases. Adding Al results in the formation of AlLi, MgLi 2 Al, and Al 2 Y phases, but the Mg 24 Y 5 phase disappeared. The precipitated phase Mg 24 Y 5 presents irregular strips and particles uniformly distributed on the α-Mg, β-Li matrix and grain boundary, lots of round granular AlLi phase distributed in the β-Li matrix, elongated phase at the grain boundary and the petal-like phase inside the crystal are the MgLi 2 Al phase, and bright white regular Al 2 Y phase scattered at the grain boundary and within the α-Mg phase. In addition, the volume fraction of α-Mg phase increases with the addition of Al element. The ultimate tensile strength of the alloy increases from 173.53 to 190.56 MPa after adding Al element, but the elongation decreases from 18.89 to 16.52%. The mechanisms of improvement are related to the increase in the volume fraction of the α-Mg phase and precipitation strengthening. The fracture morphology of the two as-cast alloys is composed of tiny dimples and cleavage planes.

Electrochemical Formation of Mg-Li-Ca Alloys by Codeposition of Mg, Li and Ca from LiCl-KCl-MgCl2-CaCl2 Melts.

Abstract:This work presents electrochemical formation of Mg-Li-Ca alloys via codeposition of Mg, Li and Ca on a molybdenum electrode in KCl-LiCl-MgCl(2)-CaCl(2) melts at 943 K. Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) showed that the underpotential deposition (UPD) of calcium on pre-deposited magnesium leads to the formation of a liquid Mg-Ca alloy, and the succeeding underpotential deposition of lithium on pre-deposited Mg-Ca alloy leads to the formation of a liquid Mg-Li-Ca solution. Chronopotentiometric measurements indicated that the codepositon of Mg, Li and Ca occurs at current densities more negative than -0.31 A cm(-2) in LiCl-KCl-MgCl(2) (5 wt%) melts containing 1 wt% CaCl(2). Chronoamperograms demonstrated that the onset potential for the codeposition of Mg, Li and Ca is -2.200 V, and the codeposition of Mg, Li and Ca is formed when the applied potentials are more negative than -2.200 V. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that Mg-Li-Ca alloys with different phases were formed via galvanostatic electrolysis. The microstructures of typical alpha and beta phases of Mg-Li-Ca alloys were characterized by optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysis of energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) showed that the element Ca mainly distributes along grain boundary in Mg-Li-Ca alloys. The results of inductively coupled plasma analysis determined that the chemical compositions of Mg-Li-Ca alloys correspond with the phase structures of XRD patterns, and the lithium and calcium contents of Mg-Li-Ca alloys depend on the concentrations of MgCl(2) and CaCl(2).

Abstract:The influence of yttrium on the microstructure and corrosion behaviour of as-cast Mg–8Li–3Al–2Zn–xY alloys was investigated. The results show that Y addition leads to the formation of Al2Y particles and the transformation of α-Mg from the long needle-like to the round-like. The noble Al2Y particles on the grain boundary inhibit the galvanic corrosion between β-Li phase and α-Mg phase, and also weaken the corrosion occurrence inside β-Li phase due to the decrease of the AlLi phase. With Y addition, the corrosion resistance is improved gradually, especially when the content of Y is up to 1.5 wt-%. Moreover, Y addition makes the corrosion film become more compact, which can prevent the base materials from being attacked continuously.
